In this episode I talk with Wayne Wilson about travel journals. Not only does he tell stories about journaling and sketching on some amazing trips but he also talks about the importance of legacy and why your great grandchildren will be grateful you kept a journal.

His main tips for keeping a travel journal also apply to nature journaling:
1. Keep it small
2. Don't make it a job
3. Find the right time: early morning quiet time or evening time on canoe trips
4. Dont take plant material if you are traveling across borders.

Thanks so much both of you. My own best guess at why 'legacy' isn't more part of the journaling conversation is that there's something of a paradox with that. A big part of the point of doing it is increasing mindfulness and being in the present. I am a recovering Mormon. I was actively taught from the time i could write that I owed my great grandchildren detailed records of my life. This functioned as an extension of all the messaging in that context that my life isn't mine and that privacy is dangerous. Also, there is a certain amount of domination culture that is heavy in to 'legacy'. We know the names of generals and conquistadors, right? My practice is about NOT that. I'm aiming more for a vibe of being a witness than of leaving a legacy. i realize that words have lots of nuance and just because a given word has a particular flavor to me, that doesn't mean it applies to general usage. Thanks again. This is really inspiring.☮
