Why You Wouldn't Survive Life in Mongol China

By 1206, Genghis Kahn had united the steppe (step) tribes of Mongolia and set his sights on China. Over the next 160 years, Genghis and his descendants would conquer all of it and set up a new Mongol dynasty in China. The Mongols were fierce, brilliant, and often-misunderstood people. At their height, they controlled the largest land empire in world history. Their armies were ruthless yet fair, their leaders tolerant yet cunning. Life in Mongol China was not for the weak of heart. It was a prosperous time for some…and a deadly time for others. From deadly archers and spy craft to disease and gunpowder, it was a tough era to be alive.
Welcome back to Nutty History. Today, we’re exploring why you wouldn’t survive life in Mongol China.

Genghis Khan once had a meeting with a proud noble from a foreign country. As the two men began talking the subject of conquest was brought up. The proud noble began telling the great Khan about the military conquests his people achieved. But as he described one conquered people in particular. The Khan clearly recognized the people being described and in an instant became absolutely furious. The Khan stood up and cursed the noble for daring to take credit for the conquest of a people that the Khan believed he himself actually conquered. The noble clearly confused made it clear that the conquest he spoke of occurred before the Mongol Empire even existed. This only enraged the Khan further and he ordered the noble be stripped and tied to a post. The noble stood naked and tied to a post absolutely terrified. The Khan stood up to have the noble strangled when an advisor came to the Khan and begged for a word in private. Several minutes later the Khan could be heard laughing. He walked out of a tent after a short conversation with the advisor with a smile on his face. He then walked up to the noble who was so scarred he was shaking. The Khan than ordered that the noble be released and given back his clothes. The stunned noble stood shocked in confusion. Seeing this the great Khan walked up to him, put his hand on the nobles shoulder and said. “You must forgive me. I have been told that you don’t understand what conquest truly is and misspoke and that your offense was not born from a desire to insult. But rather an unavoidable misunderstanding born of ignorance. If your ancestors had truly conquered these enemies. Their nation would not be one of the many nations I have truly conquered" "When these people insulted yours and made themselves your ancestors enemies. I'm told your ancestors defeated them In battle, took their lands and forced them to pay tribute for a time until they rose up and regained their sovereignty from your people. That is not conquest. When I reached their lands I offered them friendship yet they chose to be my enemy. Now not even the dust from their bones exists. They exist only in story and memory. That is conquest. I'd ask that you teach your people the same lesson so when the times comes that I offer them my friendship. They will not meet the same fate. To be conquered by my horde is to be conquered from existence. Of course the memory of the conquered will continue for as long as those with knowledge of their existence remembers them. But just as a mans life is short. So to is his memory" the great Khan then leaned in and said to the noble. "I pray your people are never forgotten" 3 years later as the Khan was inspecting the nobles from a city he had just taken that resisted the Horde for almost 6 months. He recognized this same noble on his knees with his head down. The Khan walked up to him and looked down at the noble. When the noble raised his head and saw the Khan standing before him. He immediately began to weep as he knew his fate was sealed. That same night the noble along with many others. Where ritually crushed to death. As the bodies of the crushed nobles were being moved the Khan walked up to the pile of dead men with his advisors at his side. He starred at the pile for a time in silence. He then said to himself out loud. "This is conquest" These events were recorded by the Khans personnel historian which means they are almost certainly exaggerated. But the difference in this story and the stories other conquers have spun about themselves. Is that when you learn about the history of the Mongol Empire. This story seems more likely to have been downplayed rather than exaggerated. Scary shit

Speaking of Genghis Khan, there is actually a 1956 movie about him named "The Conqueror", in which the mongol Lord of War is played by no other than John Wayne (no wonder why that movie is considered one of the worst ever made). In fact, that film caused the death by cancer of 46 members of the staff, as it was filmed in zones actively used for nuclear tests

@@samgyeopsal569 It also means "loud" but I'm not talking about Italian. In English we have a terrible habit of mispronouncing words or using the wrong words that sound similar to others. Complicating matters, dictionaries have a habit of giving into the vulgate misuse of certain words and accepting the misappropriation. The piano was called initially either fortepiano or pianoforte, in other words, ""loud-soft" or "soft-loud". So, again, although I can't say you're wrong, in Italian it means both. I think if you speak with any English professor you will find that they agree with my premise. Btw, I never say "fort" for the reason of general acceptance; it takes too long to explain. Also I have an 1826 Samuel Johnson dictionary that states that "fort" is the word for a person's strong point. Jus' sayin'

This European fantasy about Castles stopping mongols is just outright wishful thinking that doesn't have any basis on historical sources. The mongols took over fortified cities of a million with thick walls 40-50ft with 900 battle towers and the resources of the most industrialized civilization of time. Keep in mind that 10 years prior most hadn't even seen a mud or wood house. Part of what made the mongols the best military force in human history by achievements on the battlefield unmatched to this day is their flexibility and success in adopting enemies weapons and tactics. Maybe European castles may have held out to mongol siege weaponsb it's a valid argument but they were small and unlikely to sustain long sieges like cities of china which held out for years but would eventually fall. Muslim Garrisons cities like Otrar would have probably presented same challenge the best Europe had to offer and fell it did. Mongol conquest of europe in truth were eventually hampered by brutal and devastating civil wars of grandson of Chinggis Berke Hulegu war , Toluid civil wars , plague , climatic disasters and greed. The East china and the Muslim world were the powerhouses of the era and they fell , what makes you think a dividend illiterate peasantry europe would have stopped the Greatest military empire in human history

I do share your correction due to my ancestors who came from there long before such people like Mongols ever existed. As a Hungarian guy half of my ancestors were the Huns not too mixed up with the Han dynasty. It is written in the Chinese history books in BC that the Huns were for many decades and a couple of centuries terrorized and invaded the Chinese cause they were farmers and the Huns were only warriors and hunters and just a few animals around them like camel horses (those Hun horses like those small Mongolian types today) and goats and sheep. Also, the Chinese especially on the north side built the great wall and a few places as you can still see different places and some broken open places in between due to the constant Huns aggression and war and occupations. So I like to say half of my ancestors and due to them, the Chinese built that great wall that still stands today. The problem was is they always lost more men than would be worth fighting all the time and back then they were around 4-4.5 million people. So eventually they split and half went to Manchuria and Inner Mongolia blended into the Chinese farmers the other half went to Europe and stayed as the remnants of Attila the Hun cause after his death the Hun Empire in Europe started collapsing. The second of the mixed with whites today's Hungarian history is written in the Roman (today's Italy) history books. So around BC 50 and AD 453 The Huns/ Hungarians have no history only speculations. But the Whites Arpadhaza or Arpadhaziak from the southern region of the Ural mountains cause the Finns from the north region. But by AD 896 Hungary was born as the 3rd sovereign nation in Europe (after Greece and Rome). So as the Huns left today's Mongolia the Mongols from the north actually from Siberia went to claim the land that was empty may be a few tribes that were left. So those Mongols came like 1100-1200 years later. That is why the Mongols used the old Hun tactics and weapons. The recurve bows were Hun invention the small horses with thick hair were also passed down to the Mongols including the wooden saddle where they can ride and shoot arrows even as they fleeing. Those horses were though like the donkeys and can take the Siberian winters. The head gare and the clothes and the hunting with the Golden Eagle and many of the colours like the blue and the purple were unique and many Mongols wear them even today. Religion was the same and instead of Priests, they had shamans. A bunch of these artifacts are in Hungarian museums dating back 1800-2000 years. Due to the nomadic lifestyle, some legends say the Hun babies knew how to ride the horse before he or they could walk. The only thing connecting the 2 countries and nations is that the capital city of Mongolia is called UlaamBaator It means Ulam was a very common man's name and Baator means Brave. So it got the name from Ulam the Brave. Even today we Hungarians pronounce it the same way. Sorry, I was long but yes even a letter means a lot.

Some of the scenes were incredibly graphic and bloody. We went around playing with fireworks that went off with loud bangs and laughed our socks off at jokes about everything. We didn't feel threatened and we weren't scarred for life. Now, in 2022, even a video depicting history carries a trigger warning because it might upset someone. I'm so glad I am of a generation that has a backbone, not easily frightened by words or history: and certainly not requiring a safe space because a lot of people were subject to death and destruction centuries ago. Almost every European has a mongol gene, Chingis, then Kubilai, the Ogedai all were sent "princesses" to wed to closer tie to the empire. Temugin Chingis Khan is a hero of mine. I shall stop here.

I'd have been as likely to have survived as any other average person of the day. I mean I would have been one of them right? I've always found a way in life through good times and bad, so I probably would have done the same thing had I been a mongol dude back in the day.

See the first version of the definition to gain context. The historical reference is the secondary definition and similar to an "ordeal" in midevil times...

Calling cap on the range of mongol archers. Also, those weren't longbows, but composite shortbows. Absolutely no way the mongols could shoot 1k ft with their bows and no way fire at that range is accurate. Compare this to English longbowman. They could shoot several hundred meters, but that was done as volley-fire because it was so innacurate and expensive.

Decimate - original meaning is to kill one in every 10. Bad for the 10% of the population killed, but not catastrophic for the overall population
