Why You Wouldn't Survive Life in Mongol Russia

At its height in the 13th century, the Mongol Empire was the largest contiguous land empire in history. It stretched from the Sea of Japan all the way into eastern Europe, including most of continental Asia and the Middle East. Genghis Kahn, his sons, grandsons, and trusted generals were rampaging across the continent with a fine-tuned military machine that was as brutal as it was brilliant. By 1223, they had their sights set on Kievan Rus (KEE-van Russ), a loose federation of Eastern European states that hadn’t yet become Russia. Over the next 250 years, death would literally rain down. In the aftermath, the Mongol Empire was dead…and Russia was born.
Welcome back to Nutty History. Today, we’re exploring why you wouldn’t stand a chance in Mongol Russia.

Mongols are very well adapted to the cold and a lot of their successes came in the winter months. The large majority of the soldiers in the Mongol army who died from the cold were not Mongols, they were the Chinese, Korean, and Middle Eastern subjects that most helped with the siege weapons and other military technologies.

15:30 Let me have a small remark. Here in the film you can see the current territory of Hungary. The borders of the Kingdom of Hungary were quite different (much wider) at the time of the Mongol invasion. It lasted from April 1241 until March 1242. The loss of life is estimated at 30-50% due to the cruelty and the epidemic caused by the unburied bodies. The young king Béla IV managed to escape to Croatia. Furthermore, we Hungarians have learnt from our history books that Batu khan's troops returned to Mongolia because the chief khan Ögedej (1229-1241) died. They rushed home to attend the Kurultai (great tribal meeting) ín order to influence the election of the new chief khan. Weather conditions were probably a secondary cause.

There’s a great theory about how the Mongol Empire influenced and made Russia into what it was and is today. In most Mongol lands, they assimilated into the culture of the majority of the population like in Persia, China, Baghdad, etc. In Russia, where they actually overthrew the Mongols, the Muscovites took on their tactics, violent culture, with one all powerful tsar/autocrat/dictator. We still see this in Russia today. That’s a very simplified version of the theory but explains a lot.

West-Europe learned the lesson by Saracen, Viking and Hungarian waving attacks(700-780, 820-960)and build stone fortresses networks, castles, fortress bridges etc etc. That part of Hungary where stone fortress successfully resisted Mongolians, where not 70-80% population had been destroyed. It was internal fighting that caused downfall of Mongols, not the few defeats they had against Poland or Hungary. Which is actually the result of internal fighting, since they only had half the forces available for those invasions, as the generals hated each other and actively sabotage the other's plans. Basically, big Empires are hard to maintain when its authoritarian ruled.

The Mongols did not have a high population, they were a very small population in comparison with the huge populations they conquered. They were interested in agriculture and cities where they ruled, like in China, where landed agriculture produced more tax money than any other economy, and with many cities served as centers of commerce. Both of your claims are not true.

I don't think Batu was part of the first reconeissance mission. Also some Mongols were Christian (Nestorian). Not all by a long shot. They were rather religiously opportunistic by and large in the beggining of their expansion. The cold weather in and around Kievan Rus wasn't also that big of an impediment, and the Mongols were quite used to dealing with harsh weather since the steppe is a region with notoriously unhospitable weather extremes. It was often the wet seasons rather than the winter that, as is said later, bogged down and slowed the Mongol progress. Also, during the invasio lf Europe Ogedai Khagan, Chinggis Khan's son and now ruler of the Empire, died and the assault had to be put to an abrupt holt since a lot of the leaders had to go back home to be present for the election of the new Khagan, so that's kinda important as a reason. And the pronunciation of the names in the video, although often debatable and hard to get right, is still aweful. You can't pronounce "Caucasus"? Come on, make an effort.
