Yes I think the professional weightlifting career is terrible. You train more then anyone else and when you spent all your childhood and or teenage years closed in a facility with a few other, you get what? I would like 100 times more being a free weightlifting spirit. Those guys like Eoin ,Zac telander or Dylan Cooper, which I'm sure they trained hard as fuck but luckily not in that way

27 here and only started taking weightlifting seriously last year, after hanging around powerlifting to boost my ego for about 8 years. Feel like I wasted so much time I could have spent on bettering my technique, but I guess the foundation is not too bad. Hoping I can get the most out of it over the next 5-10 years.

Just started 2 weeks ago, with 25 years old, and been loving it! I always had curiosity to start this sport! I've been working out for 3-4 years and always loved to squat with depth and focus on technique. And it's really nice to have a new challenge.

Started at 29, first year spent on locking up my body in order to just do an overhead squat, this year on actually performing lifts that look like snatches, cleans and jerks. Always comparing myself to the GOATs in weightlifting, always comparing myself to the amateurs that has been lifting for 15 years and always, always, always comparing my self to the yesterday of myself. Thus, always leaving the gym with a broken confidence because I am weak and untalented but always leaving motivated and determined because I was better than I was yesterday. Thank you for this, now I know I just need to lift for another 8-10 years before I can see what I am made of, haha!

I started weightlifting at 24, but luckily I started weight training at 20 and was very athletic from a young age. Unfortunately I was a typical "gym bro" and skipped way too many leg days, so my lower half is still catching up.... I hit a double bodyweight squat (140kg) barely parallel a while ago but only have just managed to ass to grass it at 25 (almost 26). I know I won't be the next big thing at weightlifting but it would be nice to get into an English national competition for funsies.

I started at 26, now 28. I know I won't pull crazy numbers.. Not even close 😂 🤣 but I enjoy the training, I am way more mobile and it generally makes me feel healthier. Weightlifting accessories like clean high pulls, snatch pulls etc are also great from a bodybuilding perspective if you are training smart and not letting your ego take over. Self taught, no coach, only videos and lots of grinding 😂. I was always doing atg squats, exact depth like Clarence's so at least in that regard I had a good baseline. Enjoy your training guys and don't care so much about numbers, this is not our JOB, we have Shit to do on our life, this is our lifestyle(for looking and feeling better /healthier) but not our JOB. Remember that!

Started two months ago, I'm 34. I'm not expecting great numbers, and if I get a 100kg snatch one day I'll be living my best life, but I'm happy to learn, to move and be more powerful and explosive. So many years I admired nice snatches and clean and jerks, now it's time to try. And concerning the numbers, at least in my (small) city oly club they told me that I had good ones for a total beginner 😅

I've been weightlifting since 23, now 28. My goal is to snatch 100kg, but the progress has been really slow since hitting 80kg. I really want to hit that 100kg, but it seems like I still have a year+ of training before hitting that if im lucky. I know those who have my training age are almost certainly better than I, but I enjoy weightlifting and adhere to training pretty well.

Do not compare yourself to people who literally grew up on anabolics if you are natural. Its better now but far from good. All the GOATs of year past? Especially the 80's and early 90's were literally having orals for breakfast before the gym every day

I sorta forgot that a lot of weightlifters move up in weight classes throughout their careers. Maybe there is hope for my 23 year old 5'9" 67kg frame to move up in the future as I've only been training for under a year.

  • @barryw53

Started at 50. I'd not set foot in a gym until i was 49😂. I saw a coach at the gym doing a class for anyone that was interested and thought it looked more fun than the gym machines. I go 3or 4 times a week, depending on how much the previous session has hurt my shoulders, wrists or hip etc 😂. I can OHS pretty much ATG but only with 40kg. I never thought i would do that 6 months ago! This video is brilliant though. Never has being told you suck (and will do forever) been so empowering 😂

Just started like 6 months ago at 35 w a decent 5 year background "powerbuilding" w/e that means. Having grown up playing alot of sports weightlifting is so fun and scratches an itch like nothing else in the gym. Am I kinda sad I didn't start at even like 20? Of course - but fighting the good fight and seeing what I can do into my late 30s is cool and if this sport takes like 8-12 years to master who knows maybe I hit some PBs in my 40s. W/e happens its fun as hell and cool to reframe training to find wins on mobility and technical stuff. Any way to stay engaged with fitness.

Other lifters with more realistic goals might be happier along the way but if in the end i achieve it, it really doesn't matter.

Comment for the algo... A few Q&A sessions ago, you mentioned that if you don't hit 100/120 within a year of training, you probably won't be a great weightlifter. I'm approaching 90/110 as a 64kg lifter after a year and a half of training at age 30. Don't know what my potential is, but I'm shooting to at least qualify for US Nationals and win Masters when I hit 35.

Reading the comments put into perspective how fast I've come up as a lanky 6"3 fella. June 2021 (25yrs/78kg) - Started with not having the mobility to get into a deep squat, no overhead strength, could barely overhead squat to parallel. - missed 40kg snatches routinely when starting out, a 60kg clean and jerk was sketchy - 5 years of loose powerlifting experience (190s/130b/220d) April 2022 (26yrs/79kg) - 90kg snatach, 105kg clean and jerk (due to bad clean mechanics and poor form but I could jerk 115kg) *Then took 4 months off serious lifting, drank 3-4x's a week, dropped down to 74.6kg November 2022 (26yrs/81kg) - Just hit a 100kg snatch and a 125kg clean and jerk after a 13 week program (and a 6 week form rebuild prior) Thinking of getting a coach soon and getting serious with my diet. Would like to hit a 140 snatch and 170 clean and jerk by 30.....
