Why You Should Play Final Fantasy XI - Year of the JRPG Retrospective

Ойындар

2023 is the Year of the JRPG on A Friend Remembers!
A retrospective revisit of the eleventh game, the first online experience of the series and an entry that would forever change the way we think of the franchise. Is it worth revisiting in 2023?
From Wikipedia:
Final Fantasy XI, also known as Final Fantasy XI Online, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), originally developed and published by Squaresoft and then published by Square Enix as the eleventh main installment of the Final Fantasy series. Designed and produced by Hiromichi Tanaka, it was released in Japan on May 16, 2002, for PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Windows-based personal computers in November of that year. The game was the first MMORPG to offer cross-platform play between PlayStation 2 and PC. It was later released for the Xbox 360 in April 2006.[2] All versions of the game require a monthly subscription to play.
The story is set in the fantasy world of Vana'diel, where player-created avatars can both compete and cooperate in a variety of objectives to develop an assortment of jobs, skills, and earn in-game item rewards. Players can undertake an array of quests and progress through the in-game hierarchy and through the major plot of the game. Since its debut in 2002, five expansion packs have been released[4] along with six add-on scenarios. Each expansion pack and add-on brings a new major storyline to the Final Fantasy XI world, along with numerous areas, quests, events and item rewards.
In 2015, Square Enix released the final main scenario for Final Fantasy XI titled Rhapsodies of Vana'diel. Final Fantasy XI became the final active server on the PlayStation 2 online service. Support for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 versions was ultimately ended on March 31, 2016, leaving only the PC platform playable. A mobile client for the game was under development by Square Enix in collaboration with Korean developer Nexon, using Unreal Engine 4, but was cancelled in late 2020. A spin-off mobile game, Final Fantasy Grandmasters was released on September 30, 2015. A new, episodic story series titled The Voracious Resurgence was added to the game in 2020, concluding in June 2023.[citation needed] In May 2022 rumors had circulated that FFXI may soon be shutting down. Yoji Fujito released a statement noting that this was not the case and users should not worry about the services being shut down any time soon.

The friends I made on FFXI have been some of my closest people to me in my adult live. We've known each other for well over 18+ years and still find new shenanigans all the time. There's many quality of life options that have been added such as seeing how long your buffs have before they wear off to easy to access mounts. The game has really become more solo friendly in past years but the core of this game will always be built upon meeting people and working together.

This game was so amazing.. it was hard and earning your level and items felt worth it.. you needed to party up and dedicate the day just to gain a level or 2 at certain levels.. this game needs a comeback. Everything else is just spammy and flashy.. this game was such a grind!!

I played FFXI at launch. The grind was even worse at that time. I spent days fishing, losing multiple sets of gear to maybe gain 2 skill points. I camped rares for hours on end just for gear that didn't even give you that much better stats. I was killed by a sheep and had to lay dead for almost an hour while a friend ran to my position to rez me so I didn't lose progress by rez'ing at my save point. I made a ton of gil using player housing to grow crystals. It was a beast of a grind, and I loved it.

I also played at launch, with that terrible resolution they gave us. I remember the waiting around begging for people to rez me, so that I didn’t need to walk 30* minutes back to a zone and maybe die on the way back, or lose my group because they had to wait. Great times, but quality of life improvements, such as the teleport crystals is game changing.

What i love most about FF Xi is the Music. It always gives me goosebumps when i hear it. For me it is the best Soundtrack ever made. Second is the job system with the subjobs. Third comes the Story. But many other things are unnecessarly complicated in this game (but i have to say that i played it 2-3 years ago just by myself) Oh and i loved the charakters too of course.

I played FFXI from 2006 to present day I still get on and play once in awhile because no other game I have played in 30+ years quite scratched the itch. I met so many people that I forged friendships and relationships with, and some of them still today we play games together. FFXI for most people is more than a game but a community and was something we all loved and sank every hour outside of normal life. I have personally played 500+ games over many many years including other mmos and FFXIV but nothing has ever compared to it and nothing has me coming back year after year to play. The nostalgia is always there and the music is top tier, the story is compelling and makes you feel truly small in such a vast world. I love the game so much I created my own private server for just me and some friends to play and I changed some things of course to make it more challenging and fun but also to have some of retails quality of life changes over the years but I gotta say I’ve never enjoyed the game more than now because of the freedom I have to make the game my own. Sadly many of the people from 15+ years ago either don’t play or some them even have passed away but I always remember them when I encounter areas we used to enjoy and now I have my own server that can never be deleted or wiped and I love that.

Things have changed a bit between today and back then, but still many mythic places like Sky keep me going back, perhaps create a new character and start the missions all over again. At present, I have a character I'm leveling, SMN and BST lv 76 and the my subjobs are a work in progress before they become main jobs as well. One of the main things it has is the ability to change 'jobs' while on the same character. This allows you to layer and build on what you have already achieved. So in original release, there were many other things that you didn’t mention, and maybe that from lack of experience. You would lose experience at any level if you died, years later, they changed it so that pre-level 30 you could not. Enemies that rated “too weak to be worthwhile” now, still rated as “easy prey” back in the day. A couple years in, they changed how monsters stayed aggro to you, and it was much easier to lose aggro if you ran away. Solid video, and to anyone watching, still a solid game 21 years later

Retail is a lot of fun and requires you to coordinate with other RL players. Trusts are useful to fill in a missing job, but in end game, the power and skill gap is tremendous. Using that high-end gear to burn through EXP mobs takes skill and coordination, and end game raids are challenging. Modern FF11 is still incredibly grindy and time-intensive, but you can get at least a little something done each time you log in. It does a much better job of respecting your time. I've been playing since the beta release with friends for over 20 years. We all prefer retail to private servers.

I think something called Talk and Chat released several years before this, but I never used it so I couldn't say!

But this really feels as though they went back to Final Fantasy 3 and said ''we need a sequel to this series'. And... I'd recommend to any new player to look into some of the "private" servers. Eden shoots for a 2008ish era experience, more-over there is an actual player base. Always love to see new people enjoying FFXI Just one feature to comment on that you mentioned; auto-targeting Auto-targeting works when you're entirely solo (no Trust), or in a party of other adventurers (again, no Trust) If you kill an enemy and there's another enemy with aggro on your party within line of sight, it will auto-target the new one without having to manually re-engage For some reason, this does not work for enemies your Trusts have aggro on. They're not treated as party members with aggro So this was once a feature that worked great, but it's effectively broken with the Trust system and has sadly never been fixed. It is indeed very annoying to not have this anymore.

It's still the best party mechanics for variety and leveling up. But until they get rid of a lot of the questing or bypass them to focus on leveling so players can get to endgame so they can party with actual players I don't see why anyone would try this game unless they are making content.

For me, FFXI is one of the best FF games. However, the game is extremely user unfriendly. I disagree with a few comments you made about the game being a grind, combat being slow, and losing progress. It may feel like that to new players but there are lots of features and mechanics in the game to make the game play and travel be much faster. Gil is also not a problem at all in the early game. The problem is more that new players don't know about the features and don't have any knowledge of game mechanics (and looking at your game footage here, it is obvious you must be unaware of them.). To have a good experience of the game you either you do the homework of reading guides or have someone guide you because the vast majority of features and mechanics are not explained in the game itself.

FFXI is literally in the Guinness book of world records for being the first cross platform MMO. Worse yet, did you know the Guinness book of world records was made by the beer company? Yep. Trusts weren't in the game for like a decade, they massively ruined the experience. The only way you can meaningfully play the game now is on a classic server like Horizon. You're not really playing an MMO if the game is only PVE content and all you do is party with a bunch of NPC's (that have stronger stats than players to make up for their dumb AI) and playing the game solo. The game is all about infomaxxing in every way - in how you use skills in combat, in how you gear, in the roles you pull in for parties, in judging players competencies. It's a MMO, and you're completely missing the experience if you're playing it with Trusts. One of the strongest elements of the game is that it allowed gearswaps in combat. You can get as granular as using addons that script your gearswaps and perform them at the packet level for numerous optimizations/benefits. This might sound small, but eventually you can have a "precast" set that you put on before you cast a spell, then a "midcast" set you put on during your cast to confer both the fastcasting and the potency buffs on the same cast, then re-equip your idle set after the cast is complete. This is not something you're going to achieve with the in game macro systems. This can be super satisfying when all your gearsets are working perfectly. One of my favorites is the part that puts my parade gorget on if the latent is valid, so I can optimize for DPS or the gorgets refresh depending on my HP/MP automatically. RDM can build their INT/MND enfeeble sets for ALL white magic enfeebles and black magic enfeebles so they never have to worry about adding gearswaps to new spells, as low as lvl 10. It's awesome and powerful, and the old style of difficulty rewards this kind of perfect optimization. Competently navigating the games systems/world is highly rewarding - like unlocking outposts and using them to get around the game world. You could play the game for years and not know they exist.

It’s an amazing server and as someone who played from 2002 to 2007 and came back in 2020 (to retail), it’s just not the same. Not saying retail isn’t a great experience, but it wasn’t long that I canceled my retail account to play on horizon and haven’t looked back. Horizon is an amazing experience, true to what made ffxi the greatest mmorpg with qol improvements. So for anyone wondering, don’t listen to this clown saying horizon is for poor people, it genuinely is for anyone wanting to relive the golden age of this game. Now go play with your trusts…

  • @AFriendRemembers

    @AFriendRemembers

So.... I've thought long and hard about this. When it came out, FF11 'demanded' you play online. But over the following decades they have made it far more accessible, to the point you can play it essentially solo. Are you getting the true experience? No, definitely not, but you can experience the game and the story and the narrative and the 'feel' of the game. BUT you still need to pay a monthly subscription, you have to be online and you have to pay to be online. FF14 both the base game and the first expansion are free to play, so whilst you need to be online the server access wont cost you anything. This, combined with the fact the game has always been much more accessible to play alone, you don't 'need' other players, makes it far more enticing. So, the problem is twofold. First, to play it you are going to need to put a hundreds of hours in to get the content. They are slow, poorly paced single player games. Then, secondly, you have to be online and you have to (at some point, to get everything) pay a monthly subscription fee. I understand its necessity to exist but I am against it on principal.... I think they are both worthy titles - and FF11 has luckily escaped its original predestined fate to be switched off when the PS2 hardware faded away. But.... Had it been 'FF ONLINE' not 'FF11 online' I wouldn't have weeped. I would have been sad though if they had done a Warcraft, essentially abandoned the mainline games to focus on the online series instead of the main games. We escaped that fate at least!

  • @KillerDeadXero

Same argument how Bethesda named elder scrolls online and blizzard with world of war craft. It’s definitely ballsy. But then again…. They are also owners of Dragon Quest X which is also online but they DID make it “offline” but at the same time it’s Also Japanese Only. So then again. The fact that final fantasy 2,4, and 5 was also Japanese only and took a while for English version to be translated. So I think Square is definitely to blame for prioritizing Japan instead and would’ve been called Final Fantasy Online, I mean…. They did make a “mainline” variant in the form of tactics and mystic quest and crystal chronicles. Also Diablo 4 is more MMORPG like than ARPG.
