A Friend Remembers - short video essays from recall.
Gaming old and new, the best book, comics, music, television shows and movies. Slowly developing an alternative history of popular culture with a series of video essays (A Friend Recalls), reaction videos (A Friend Reacts) and further investigations into new other aspects of popular culture.

In 2018 video gaming became the worlds single most popular form of entertainment however that does not mean other forms are dead or deserve to be forgotten. We have been fortunate enough to reap the benefits of an evolving industry that learns from both it's successes and mistakes - and I've been learning as a consumer. This series is designed to celebrate and share important milestones and significant releases; be they good or bad.

Best FF by a mile. Also Sakaguchis favorite, which settles it. None of the others comes close.
there was a cancelled sequell to this game ecco 2 sentinels of the universe was cancelled since the sega dreamcast failed don't know why they didnt just release it to the ps2 or the xbox original
Love your videos, especially the FFXI video got me because up until now its the only FF I didn´t play although I bought the complete edition on PC a few months ago and have the Xbox360 edition in my collection. Will definitely play it some day (still hoping for an offline remaster). One correction though, because I saw it in several of your videos: FFXIII (and also the SNES- and PSX-era of FFs) are NOT turn based. Menu based battle engines don´t equal "turn based". There are only four turn based FF games: I-III and X. ATB is a real time system which doesn´t count turns / is based on a specific turn order. The whole idea of this system was to step away rom the slower paced turn based system and put some pressure on the player, it was the first step into a more action oriented experience within the series.
There are a decent amount of private servers that are flat out amazing imo, and if they dont 100% recreate that nostalgic feeling of old, they come very close to duplicating it, and in some cases changing things much for the better
DID YOUJUST CALL IT ... "JILL" Gil as in Girl Gil as in Glamour Gil as in Gif
I have the steam version. Did you know that Team Fortress is in this game?
When you have multiple enemies locked on you, you can switch targets as soon as you finish the current monster. That way you avoid the down time when switching mobs.
Slight correction, leveling isn't hard anymore. Back then it took months or even years to get a job to 75. Now you can get from 1 to 99 on a weekend.
Unfortunately, PlayOnline is the backbone of this game and the only way to get away from it is a full on remake. We all want this, but it's highly unlikely, as I doubt SE can justify the budget for it, nor do they want to compete against themselves with XIV
FFXI is literally in the Guinness book of world records for being the first cross platform MMO. Worse yet, did you know the Guinness book of world records was made by the beer company? Yep. Trusts weren't in the game for like a decade, they massively ruined the experience. The only way you can meaningfully play the game now is on a classic server like Horizon. You're not really playing an MMO if the game is only PVE content and all you do is party with a bunch of NPC's (that have stronger stats than players to make up for their dumb AI) and playing the game solo. The game is all about infomaxxing in every way - in how you use skills in combat, in how you gear, in the roles you pull in for parties, in judging players competencies. It's a MMO, and you're completely missing the experience if you're playing it with Trusts. One of the strongest elements of the game is that it allowed gearswaps in combat. You can get as granular as using addons that script your gearswaps and perform them at the packet level for numerous optimizations/benefits. This might sound small, but eventually you can have a "precast" set that you put on before you cast a spell, then a "midcast" set you put on during your cast to confer both the fastcasting and the potency buffs on the same cast, then re-equip your idle set after the cast is complete. This is not something you're going to achieve with the in game macro systems. This can be super satisfying when all your gearsets are working perfectly. One of my favorites is the part that puts my parade gorget on if the latent is valid, so I can optimize for DPS or the gorgets refresh depending on my HP/MP automatically. RDM can build their INT/MND enfeeble sets for ALL white magic enfeebles and black magic enfeebles so they never have to worry about adding gearswaps to new spells, as low as lvl 10. It's awesome and powerful, and the old style of difficulty rewards this kind of perfect optimization. Competently navigating the games systems/world is highly rewarding - like unlocking outposts and using them to get around the game world. You could play the game for years and not know they exist.
As a 14 player, I will play 11 if it gets a rework / reboot / remaster but I'm not messing with it as is. I want to sign up, download and login in less than half an hour and I want the game to simply run on my computer without issues. Ill be waiting for that.
Horizonxi it is
Just started playing the game a few weeks ago! While I'm enjoying it, ive tried talking to other players even just to say hello and I've been ignored every time. Any tips for making friends and communicating with other players?
I tried Final Fantasy XI for the first time last month. There's no obvious main story to follow to way to progress it, which is kind of making me regret giving it a try. I need more structure in a game to make it feel worth the effort.
Nah man, after this he was doing some insider training and landed himself in jail for 2 years. I guess he was studying the Jail Layout so he can create a game better than any of those freeware prison escape games.
Nothing will ever replicate this game again. a true mmorpg in its golden age. How anyone is content with running around overworlds where enemies are virtually incapable of killing you is beyond me. Wow classic was a good balance but ff14 is a massive over correction.
I remember playing SAM/BLM in ballista to dispel shadows. everyone played /nin in pvp and shadows were so annoying.
It was, good luck my friend
You should cover final Fantasy X2? It's A game itself. Once you get into it. It's really fun.
This is the best description of what is great about TP that I have found. I might use to to try and persuade my friends to dip their toes into the the series.
The real boss of FFXI was hoping PlayOnline updated overnight with out reciving an error.
Sadly these days, I can't find anybody other than old folks like me who play FF11, retail or private servers. If you go on Twitch, almost NOBODY plays 11. Thousands of people stream FF14, but you couldn't scrape together 100 viewers of 11 at any given time. Such a shame, because I still play it on the Horizon server. But then again, I'm in my mid-40s and well out of touch with the kids in their 20s who expect much faster and flashier gamers.
I still wish he had made more Ark and Kerrigan cartoons. Those were my favorites (though Return of Ganondorf and One Ring to Rule Them All 2 were classics)
I am currently on book 3 via audiobooks. I enjoy the books. However i find aunt pol quite annoying at time especially with her treatment of garion. Treats him like a child doesn't teach him anything meaningful. Then turns around and says you need to grow up and demands he needs to learn to harness his powers. There are many situations where she is powerful as is mr wolf. However when things get bad they allow themselves to be captured or attacked multiple times. Prime example when they get taken to a dukes dungeon by the snake person. They get ambushed easily. Still enjoying it and i do know they cant just use the powers because of the noise ect.
Teaches him nothing and complains that he doesn't know anything. Well written female character?
I wish the sequel would be released into full production. Ecco: Sentinels Of The Universe.
I love all the Ecco games
Sonic the hedgehog on the mighty master system really is a brilliant game, happy little sound chip & instantly recognisable to anyone who owned the 8-bit system growing up.
I'm shantaru rdm/nin, blm/rdm, and geo(Idris) all 3 jobs master level 50 on this game over 22 years and still playing every night on Asura server with friends from over 15 years ago! don't just remember but make new memories it's better than ever and continues to do so! your welcome to join our adventures if your strong enough...smart enough you will prosper! see you there 😎
Imean I like wakka, but I do think they did him dirty... I felt like he was somewhat of someone you could talk to, like he was almost a bro. I don't mind him having a few discrimitory moments bc it wasn't long until he just became confused about everything. But aside from the al bed, wakka was either a bro, or just a very ignorant person who if it wasn't for tidus, he would be the character who was slow on picking up on things. I feel like he didn't really get much interactions with the part other than tidus, hating on rikku, and sometimes talking to lulu like I understand how Yuna can rely on lulu or khimari, but I never understood the dynamic of her and wakka. I don't know why they wouldn't make him the monk character, bc riku sure didn't fit (since she's a thief and chemist which is better), and while I don't mind the ball, it feel like it could have an secondary weapon type for tidus. With how hard he throw and how he's built, he seemed like a great choice for a monk
22years.... I've never left. It's the only game!
It has great features: Niche mmo so community is awesome. It doesnt have such a convoluted story like wow. You can start this today and due to the faster xp gain and trust system the early game is solo but finishable quickly. Getting into not. While i understand people like not having a ! on every quest npc. Its great to discover quests(even though the reward is rarely worth it). There is also a quest log of some sorts, called RoE where you gain basic tasks and it points you towards the next expansion or main mission quest. Finishing those quests without a guide is impossible due to asking very specific things or places to go. Some of these are not even mentioned on the map. And the UI and combat is clunky. All abillities are only comfortably cast via scripts, meaning you have to write literal scripts into the macros just to hotkey abillities. The inventory system is just displaying all items in a row and you have to scroll through them via arrow keys or controller buttons. If i pay for a subscription and they made a pc port they should atleast make the UI accessable via mouse. If that would have been done i would have played the game much more. As it stands the game is mostly run based on the subscription of long lasting players, people coming back for nostalgia and the tiny 1% who want to try out a niche , classic mmo(but quit quickly). I mostly continue playing it due to the social aspect, with people who help me out and i talk with.
The Eden server is pretty dang decent
Eden is pretty good, I prefer HorizonXI.
With all due respect. As a man who works with my hands and has a drive, I disagree. Audio is the only way I really have
XI will never be matched and as for XIV it's boring a hell :)
PUT IT BACK ON PS5
Many years ago I was playing and made friends with a Japanese LS these guys helped me through everything although communication was difficult we successfully did most of the content. Love them guys but will never have the time to go back to 11.
Jokes on you, I'm a trucker and listen to audiobooks to better engage my mind while driving. You've just given me my next series to start that'll keep me occupied for 2 months. Counterpoint, if you get a chance listen to Brandon Sanderson way of kings in the knights radiant part of the cosmere by the graphic audio cast, very well done.
I still play FFXI in 2024. It comes and goes in waves. This was my first MMO, I will never forget it. Things have changed a bit between today and back then, but still many mythic places like Sky keep me going back, perhaps create a new character and start the missions all over again. At present, I have a character I'm leveling, SMN and BST lv 76 and the my subjobs are a work in progress before they become main jobs as well. With all the new designs and new technologies, this iteration of FF is still hands down the best of all MMOs.
I would LOVE to play FF11, if it were included with 14 sub or something. But the sub price is just too high to justify for a 2nd game for me.
@@Clarynaa You're absolutely right, the sub is quite at a high price. That's the reason why I'm playing it on my own private server nowadays.
The agony of de leveling still haunts me lol
I still remember stressing over WHM Maat fights.
Retail is a lot of fun and requires you to coordinate with other RL players. Trusts are useful to fill in a missing job, but in end game, the power and skill gap is tremendous. Using that high-end gear to burn through EXP mobs takes skill and coordination, and end game raids are challenging. Modern FF11 is still incredibly grindy and time-intensive, but you can get at least a little something done each time you log in. It does a much better job of respecting your time. I've been playing since the beta release with friends for over 20 years. We all prefer retail to private servers.
11 will be back in 14
yes
just play horizon xi, its a time locked private server for 2006 era :D
no
@@rashid2898 stop being wrong and just play horizon xi
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I WANT OFFICIAL CLASSIC
@@rashid2898 Official and classic are two separate things. The only way to have official classic at the same time is to build a time machine and go back to 2007
@rashid So does everyone else man but that’s probably not gonna happen. Horizon XI is the next best thing. Now please, it’s time to come back home. We’re waiting for you friend…
Come Play on Horizon XI 75 Era FFXI experience its population is booming!
no
Tried it for the first 6 months.. then the LS leader showed is how to duped item and I was done. Now he has 4 relics.
So in original release, there were many other things that you didn’t mention, and maybe that from lack of experience. You would lose experience at any level if you died, years later, they changed it so that pre-level 30 you could not. Enemies that rated “too weak to be worthwhile” now, still rated as “easy prey” back in the day. A couple years in, they changed how monsters stayed aggro to you, and it was much easier to lose aggro if you ran away. Solid video, and to anyone watching, still a solid game 21 years later
Right now there is a private server you can play for free thats in the 75 classic era named HorizonXI lots of players on there and i played 11 when it first came out on the PS2 never finished it as a kid but now i get the chance just like back in 2003 i think it was
The fitz chivalry books are quite simply the best fantasy books ever written for me. Even surpassing the lord of the rings. Just absolutely stunning. I re read them every year without fail.
I'm currently playing XIV and will continue for a while. But this game really looks interesting to me. I hope it will not be shut down until I get to play it.
do people still pay for this game ? should be free by now love it but after finishing most of it became a bazzar sell in jeuno
Love cool character but racist. Made me laugh cause it's true. He is a fun character.
These audiobooks cured my insomnia. They’re like a mommy and daddy who read you the best bedtime stories ever, but like professionally. Five stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
