I chose Caucasian Ovcharka as my first dog. That was 10 yrs ago, today i live with two. Prior buying first puppy, i spent a year+ on research, visiting breeders and people owning the breed. My life situation and age suited my choice of breed. It's nothing i can recommend but after initial bumps on the road it was one of the best choices i ever made. But mark my words - this dog is NOT for most people due to it's breed traits and independent strong willed nature combined with it's physical strength and size. For most people it creates more problems than it solves. Just think of the daily limitations with visitors, holiday trips or imagine a scenario with your injured/sick dog needing a visit to the vet... Its a wonderful breed for the right owner under the right circumstances. But the reality of living with this level of guard dog... it's just too much for most people to handle in their daily life.

This breed is a cold weather dog, the more snow the better,it is not an apartment dog, they need lots of space to run with concrete and steel fencing, they also need to be trained at the puppy stage!

Omg i can attest to this they are hard to early train but once you get them to a median. Then you work on that and once you pass that point they are more loyal than any dog I have ever had.

I would agree with everything said here except an apartment :D I had a huge house with garden etc, the doggo was still 100% of the time with me on the couch, bed, under my desk. Moving to 40km2 apartment made no difference whatsoever. (to be fair, I walk him around 10-15km a day, so home time is mostly hugs and naps).

Bravo. Finally a good explanation of a dog breed. And not only caucasian shepherd. Many guardian dogs aren't suitable for living in urban areas. All of them have a history and genetics of war, hunting and guarding a homestead against wild animals and humans. These are tough dogs for tough people, living a tough life. As far as guarding and protection goes, every owner should ask himself a question is he capable of protecting himself and his family at a bare minimum. If he is then he knows what it takes to defend and protect against psychologically deranged, high on drugs etc people. It has nothing to do with pretty laws and respecting human rights. As soon as someone is trying to put you and your family at risk he /they lost those rights. People that created those breeds and I mean a lot of the breeds (caucasian, alabai, sarplaninac, kangal, but also cane corso, presa, rotweiller,....) were very well aware of this. Modern practice of trying to make a poodle out of a rotweiller or lets say dogo argentino is at least immature thinking. Also breeding practice where agression is suppressed and focus is on looks much more than temperament is destroying those breeds. Sorry for the rant. I restrain myself from writing comments on KZread, but I had to do it since this is first video I found where a breed is described in a proper way, and for that i congratulate you.

Yes I have one.. not an easy breed for sure. Extremely stubborn, territorial and protective.. he was guarding from 3 months old.. only the very few can manage and handle such a breed for sure. @camillahunt3247 Lol.. yes my last dog was an American Akita.. the Ovcharka is definitely in another league.. my Akita was also very independent and aloof.. my Caucasian is opposite and doesn't leave my side. Even off lead.... had to extensively socialise him to be that way.. or Would be unmanageable.. he is extremely strong.. so was my Akita but he is literally double the strength and bite

@@commendatori1 So many Akita owners mention their aloofness. Ares is not like that with me. He is usually by my side or constantly looking out the windows lol Extremely protective and a great guardian. I had a GSD before she passed and was honestly considering a Caucasian Shepard. However, dog trainer suggested otherwise. I am glad I listened. The last thing I want to do is get a dog I can't handle. I just enjoy watching videos of them. Such beautiful animals 😍

@camillahunt3247 Yh some become very attached to you but still enjoy thier own space.. very protective.. though my boy never barked.. hardly ever.. My Caucasian slightest noise and he goes mad.. they are not an easy breed and as they are a Livestock Guardian breed if they aren't doing that.. they are extremely hard to manage.. hence why they usually end up in shelters by 1.. I was also gonna get a GS before I ended up getting an Akita.. beautiful dog's too.. though my Caucasian is extremely loving and loves nothing more then cuddles on the sofa.. a very unique breed for sure.. off the scale protective and territorial also. My boy is still growing and they can get upto 240lbs.. fully grown around 3 years old

We’ve had an illyrian shepherd dog, and must say that was one of the best dogs we’ve had in our family, now we have 2 German shepherds much easier to train but nowhere near as protective as the Illyrian Shepherd dogs. Great family protection dogs very loyal n brill with children. Again it all depends how you raise them, every breed of dogs can be difficult if you don’t know how to treat or train them right from the start.

We have an Illyrian Shepherd and he is the nicest dog I've ever had! Loves other dogs and almost takes me down trying to greet any and all new humans he sees. We also have a Saint Bernard and a Landseer Newfoundland. The female Saint is the boss of the group, bnut everyone gets along great. I've had dogs my entire life and I believe how a dog turns out has more to do with the family it's raised with than anything. We rescued a Wolf Hybred who was horribily abused by her first scum-bag owner. We got her at 10 months old and a mental WRECK. Took a few months, extreme patience, lots of destroyed things in our home, but she turned out to be a very happy animal when we got our first Saint Bernard puppy. All in all, I'd say that as long as one has "big dog" experiance, don't hesitate to get one of these magnificent dogs, the Illyrian Shepherd.
