Never leave your enemy open to get back to you. Make sure there no will left in him to come back to you. His safety should become a paramount importance to him after seeing you.

I understand why these were demonstrated from a wrist grab, for simplicity and to focus on the relevant part, but it would be cool to tie it together with a tsuki or tanto attack just to bring it to life a bit more.

Unfortunately I was always told put your attacker down hard, you don't want to be messing around when your in a dangerous situation especially if your facing multiple attackers. I can tell you someone out of their tree on drugs will keep coming even with a dislocated shoulder, broken arm or the like, taking out both knee caps puts them down and keeps them down. We are not talking about killing them just stopping them hard and efficiently.

So you give me 6 minutes of ads at the start of this and expect me to stay? Well I did - this time! These all require the attacker to let you in. Lovely techniques if they do, but not very realistic. Nobody, apart from in training, has ever grabbed my arm. Please give us some more realistic techniques.

Wrist grabs are just for training. They are like a punching bag in boxing; a way to focus on one part of the technique you are practicing. Because it's the beginner level of training, people who've only done a few aikido classes think it's what we do. It's not. Once you learn the basics from a wrist grab, you progress to strikes and weapons. That's what they are doing here, demonstrating the specifics of a part of the technique (the atemi) and just using a wrist grab for simplicity. If you watch some other videos you will see them demonstrate sankyo from other, more realistic, attacks but I do agree that it would be nice to see a quick demo at the end of these techniques from tsuki or something, just to bring it all to life a bit.

@@shia_labeouf I hear you and agree. Got a bit carried away due to the annoying 6 mins of ads, lol, or I wouldn't have said anything at all. However, at 0:26 he talks of "times that are critical" but then goes on to show techniques where the attacker makes life easy. Most of us can imagine that we need to break, or near to, what would be good is to show how to 'encourage' ppl into positions other than from arm grabs which enable that. I like these guys, but I guess I'm looking for them to understand their audience here a little better. Not everyone is going to sign up for classes .

@@FreshUF Nope! Sorry mate, sometimes just 5 secs, but also sometimes no skip button at all - set by the owner I think - then it plays into the next ad then the next as it did this time above. Anyway mate, was just a bit annoyed at the time but all relaxed now 😎.

I just took my first Akido class and they are taking a lot about one point and Ki. How important do you think this is?

  • @bruhjamalhavok5787

ki is extremely important is the Japanese word for energy. It's about understanding the flow of energy from your attacker and how to direct that energy for the desired outcome. It takes a lot of time to actually understand it.

  • @shia_labeouf

Ki is talked about in different ways. In my dojo we are very practical and consider ki to just mean the energy or effort, if you like, that is present in both tori and uke. You want to blend with uke's ki to make use of the effort they are bringing to perform techniques. Much of aikido is based on this. Indeed, if uke is giving you none of their ki, then you can't easily perform aikido techniques, but nor do you need to; People don't attack by passively holding you. They will be bringing energy and you utilise that. Some people/dojos have a more "spiritual" view of what ki is and will talk in terms of auras and stuff. I personally find that a bit abstract and unhelpful.

It was in my first class too my instructor retired from Aikidobut continuedmy education in tai chi, my current school doesn't spend much time on it. While you learn techniques it's difficult to think of the ki side of things but if you can practice any exercises you get shown it helped me with posture and body structure later on.

A terrorist in London? Too bad you guys don't have the right to bear arms. You are forced to go hand to hand with terrorists with knives and machetes. Every country needs the right to own firearms. It's just common sense. If you fight a terrorist with your fists you won't win, because they have nothing to lose. I wouldn't suggest using Aikido on terrorists.
