I chose the RT over a GS and GSA. In my younger years I rode enduros, XR350R. I’m now 67 and realized I would not ride dirt with proficiency so opted for the road bike. My 2016 RT has proven itself to exceed expectations. I ride north Georgia mountain roads, Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherohala Skyway, “The Dragon” and the RT exceeds my skill set. If I were to buy another bike, it would be a new RT. I must admit, I’ve never used the radio. Keep The Faith!

Got a GSA myself, it’s handy here in Australia, had a Road King previously and it used to have just enough fuel for between stops crossing Australia, the GSA has fuel to spare and that’s comforting. Gotta throw in with Kenny though, I love the RT too but I’m still enjoying the versatility of the GSA, next time though . . .

@@GavCritchley I ended up with a 1250 GSA as a second bike to my Road Glide. My reasoning was, I can strap camping gear to it and take it into the woods without worry. I can also use it as a touring bike with all the storage, decent weather protection, and 30 liter tank. I can see it being my only bike with no need for the HD except, my wife will not get on the GSA. Love the boxer motor and now I am looking at the RT again - the campsites I visit are mostly prepared areas and not wild. Maybe one RT to replace the other two?

Three things: (1) First, thanks for watching and providing feedback; (2) it's a good point re pillion comfort and one that Kenny and I failed to address -- pillions do seem to enjoy the GS/A, which is counter intuitive to me, given the lesser wind protection, but it does seem to be a consistent observation; and (3) As much as I enjoyed the beastie and awesome power of the K1600 platform, it is a heavy girl, no where near as nimble as a GS or RT, but for highway miles I cannot imagine a better bike.

Your comment about riding in the dirt reminded me of a conversation I had with another biker shortly after I got my 1981 Suzuki GS1100-EX. I had owned my bike about a month or two, and happened up on another guy with the same kind. I stopped, and we talked a while. He also had a couple of dirt bikes - his and his wife's. He told me an interesting thing about his experience. He started on dirt bikes, of which he had several, so he was familiar with their handling characteristics. One day on his GS1100 he had a tire blow out. His first move? Get off the pavement into the gravel. Why? Because he was familiar with that surface and knew what to expect.

Some truth to all that. Have you tried riding one? GS is an amazing handling bike. It's tall, but you get used to that quickly and then you appreciate it for the ground clearance when you are flying through corners you never dreamed of on a Harley. But if you want something lower, give a K1600B a demo ride if you haven't already. 160hp and a ton of torque! kzread.info/dash/bejne/k3tpsMaBYciTopc.html I should add that I ride a Harley too, John, and I love it.

For this 60+ rider both bikes are too tall, too fat, and too heavy. Too hard to handle in parking lots. Being a lifetime BMW rider I rented a HD Road King last summer. Road Seattle to Chicago and back. Enjoyed that hog immensely - was able to put my feet on the ground. And frankly found it easier to ride, and just as comfortable, than my RT1200.

When I traded my S1000R, I was fully expecting to cross over to something more sport touring like the RT, but after testing both I choose the GS. It just feels better planted on the road, more comfortable and spirited. As for the quickshift on the GS, it's nowhere as good as the S1000 series. Kenny seems to like it on the RT, so maybe its better on that model? Maybe in 10 years when I earn my "50 year riding badge" the RT will have gone through some cosmetic updates and upgrades, if not I have no problem sticking with the GS.

Agree - the GS quick shifter is not as smooth as on some of the other BMW bikes I’ve ridden, though I’ve not yet riffed and S1000. It is better on the RT but not hugely. And of course I agree with you on the GS over the RT, but I can understand it’s appeal to Kenny. The shorter wheelbase and smaller wheels make it quicker to turn in to me. And it’s smoother. But definitely not as spirited as the GS! And I like the suspension of the GS. Here’s my review of the RT from just a few minutes on a demo ride. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fKdhl8iLXbXUn84.html
