Why YOU should buy a Cruiser Motorcycle NOW! BMW R 18 & Harley-Davidson Street Bob Classic.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We go into all the reasons why we think cruiser motorcycles are the number one choice for bikers, and no matter what bikes we review, from adventure bikes, to naked, to street bikes, to dual sport, to sports bikes, we always feel pleased when we jump back on our own bikes and feel happy that we own a cruiser.
In this video, Darcy & The Ol' Man are riding the Harley-Davidson Softail Standard with V&H Twin Slash slipons, and the BMW R 18 First Edition in bog standard form.
If you ride a motorbike that we would describe as having pointy plastic and a high revving engine, YOU need to trade it in for a cruiser!
We talk about the styling, the engines, the torque, the size, the appeal.
One of the bikes even has a reverse! And in this film you'll see why this matters! We also show how cruisers are a good choice for taller riders.
We review the main points that matter and you can make a decision if you think cruiser motorcycle is for you.

When I first started riding in 2020 at the age of 51, I didn’t know what I was looking at with all these different styles of bikes that exist today. Strange looking, insect/alien things with a handlebar and an engine. When I saw the “cruiser” style I felt home. Reminds me of what I remember a “motorcycle” should look like.

I've been flirting with the idea of owning a cruiser for a while, even had a few test rides on a Harley. Ended up going the other direction and buying an Africa Twin, but I think my next bike will be a cruiser. Your R18 is really growing on me, great value too, well at least in Australia where the price slots in between the Softail Standard and the Street Bob. Looks like more bike for the $ than the Harley's mentioned.

As someone who rides a Honda Rebel 500 everyday to work I can tell you I absolutely love it! And in the past I’ve had a Yamaha XS650 Honda CB550 Shadow 1100 a V45 Magna 750 and a Virago 750. And I can safely say only the Magna would’ve spanked my Rebel. All the rest would have lost to this little bike. So it’s got more than enough power for me these days and I really like the modern classic look. But I would NEVER EVER have an Automatic 😴 Anyway Love the video Gentlemen 👍 PS I like the look of the BMW better,Sorry Darcy🤷‍♂️ and he should leave the pipes alone. I mean it is a BMW!!!

You two are spot on in every point you make. Cruisers are it for me, especially in my 60’s. And I thought about changing out my new Speedmaster’s stock pipes, but I like the sound as is, and don’t think V&H slips ons will make that much of a difference. I also like the look of those stock BMW pipes, so it really depends on whether you like that stock sound. Mr. Darcy’s Harley sounds sweet - not too loud, but a nice grumble. To me, the R18 sounds fine.

I totally agree with cruisers, Torque is so wow factor, i recently got back into biking, and did 4500 miles in last 5 months, which is more than i ever did in my whole life on bikes and am really enjoying the meditative freedom you get from riding. Today my son passed his full bike license and so proud he did it so easily. I have the 2021 street bob in black, did quite a few changes, comfy Saddleman seat, 2.5ft sissy bar, engine bars, Memphis shades gauntlet and hand guards, V & H mini grenades in Crome and stage 1 tune. The best bike out there, tested so many and nothing compares to a good cruiser. I have a 2022 Ducati Monster too, its good fun quick and revs well & still a twin with real decent torque, my wife has a 2022 Honda Monkey bike and tbh that gets as many looks as the Harley, cause its a real bit of fun and looks great. I have ordered another twin the 2022 Honda CB500X which you reviewed and i think its going to tick all the boxes in between the Streetbob and Monster. My one regret is i didn't get back into bikes earlier, my reason was they are too dangerous, but what i found is the bike isn't dangerous, the user style of riding is, i chose defensive riding, i took the bike safe course with the police which was awesome fun day out for not a lot of money £50.

It has a really beautiful shape and complements the bike, and with that beautiful location that you live at why would you even need a loud exhaust? It’s faster, the brakes are better, it handles better, the suspension is sooooo much better, it’s more comfortable and it has better wind/weather protection. I wholeheartedly agree about the high torque in lower rpm. It's incredibly practical in real life usage. Cruisers are also a lot more narrow than an adventure bike so it can still lane filter very easily, I'm just not a fan of forward controls. Makes me feel like a parachute going against the wind.

I do get tired of the motorcycle magazines and many KZreadrs exhorting the wonders of “6 axis IMU traction control” etc. By all means have it for emergencies or for less skilled riders, but they talk about the tech before the engines or other aspects, which is ridiculous. Agree 100%, and I've owned many bikes, including HD, BMW, Triumph, Norton, BSA, Ducati, Moto Guzzi...not counting all the dirt bikes. Cruisers put you right. They just do. Your point: bringing yourself into line with the bike, becoming part of the machine, the sound, wind, clunk of gears, throttle blip...that's motorcycles, to me. I gotta say, you do a great job, guys. Can't wait to see your take on the Lowrider S, by the way. Also, that BMW haunts me. I can't look away (but I have to...no more big bikes or I sleep in the garage...). But you have to change those fishtail pipes. I get it...shiny. But they look a little too Wisconsin/Midwest to me. And I'd love to hear the exhaust note from that twin outta shorter pipes. Thanks!

The Drone looks very cool. Does it dodge trees as it follows you down the road ? We often ride down some VERY narrow tight roads and have crashed a drone trying to film a ride...

This is a great video gentleman, i agree with everything you have said. I do have a Street Bob and i have owned an R18, both wonderful machines that definitely come with a free smile on your face when push that start button. I replaced the R18 with a CVO street Glide which i love to death but i do miss that “no fuss riding” that the huge R18 gives you and of course…….the reverse gear. Oh….it certainly gathers attention from people too. Ive noted the holiday cottage and would love to enquire for a stay perhaps next year with a couple of biker mates. Great video gents….kind regards.

For brutal torque I have the Rocket 3 GT - which is the pinnacle of torque. I also have a sport glide. There's nothing that the Harley does that the Rocket doesn't do better - it's faster, it handles better, it brakes better and it looks good. But I still love riding the Harley as it's more 'raw' if that makes sense? On a lazy sunny day out in the countryside flowing in and out of the bends with that lovely sound is great. To my mind it's all about different experiences..

Early in my biking years, I tried a Yamaha XV535 Virago. Very different to the sports bikes I was used to, however what put me off the cruiser style completely is when I went around corners I scraped the pegs - badly. Thirty years on, after a ton of various bikes on just about every flavour and power (not cruiser), I tried a Royal Enfield Meteor and totally fell in love with the relaxed cruising style, and no problems with the pegs ! Bought the bike. May go for a slightly bigger capacity machine one day (for extra oomph) but a massively heavy weight bike and scraping pegs are not where I want to go. Still, it's a start. Harley should learn something here and produce some basic, simple, cheaper bikes (which handle) for people to step into the cruiser world on. On another note, the Triumph Bobber shocked me as it was a cruiser-ish bike that actually handled well. Thanks for the vid as always !

I recently bought a Royal Enfield Super meteor, but found the seat and suspension lacking. I now have to visit my physiotherapy mate to repair the damage done to my backside, I adore the Meteors engine and handling but I originally purchased it with the intention of long range touring. I am now considering Harley Davidson or Indian, hopefully Japanese old style cruisers will be imported back into Australia again, they we're banned unless they came standard with ABS @ FUEL INJECTION. I've always loved cruisers but the weight is an issue for me, I grimaced at Darcy giving himself a hernia trying to move his bike. The BMW'S electric motor reverse is a God send. May God watch over your family and keep you safe

I have a Rebel 1100 manual (& don't tell the wife) a R18C Both are great Cruisers. The BMW is so well refined and is much nicer to ride than the Honda. The Honda is much more fun to wring its neck. Weight difference VERY noticible, but the BMW is ride of choice and I am going to sell the Honda. I am a bit older so will enjoy the BMW the reverse is a game changer (well done BMW). The R18 will get too big for me at some stage so I will revert back to the Honda DCT at that time. For decades I could not understand why big cruisers were a thing. Now I have one and now I know why. .....Now how to tell the wife.... What I love about the BMW is its like the power in a 1960's V8 - tap it and it shakes and motivates forward & RPM range is similar and it vibes and shakes and lets you know what its thinking, down shift in a corner and it swears at you, very un German and like a 1960's V8 cornering is a thing but you miss plan it and it will let you know. It is a shared riding experience.

I love cruisers, too, but they are are not practical as commuter bikes that need to navigate high-speed, busy American freeways. The taller German and Italian "plastic" bikes provide far better visibility, agility, and safety. But their aesthetics stink. I love bikes with a classic look, but I don't like cruisers with their low seats. I prefer a seat that is about the same height as the tank, and mid rear controls. If I can't stand up on the pegs to clear obstacles I don't like it. That's why I prefer what Royal Enfield is doing over anything that Harley has for sale.

I get the appeal of cruisers from the point of view of big torque and more relaxed riding, but the whole Harley / Hog / ape hangars thing turns me right off. I have ridden a Fat Bob, but to be honest the apes and loud pipes made me feel a bit of an idiot riding it through Swindon. And the “ culture” around it makes me cringe a bit. Just me. Everyone’s different and at the end of the day we are all riders. Equally, I’m not keen on dressing up like a power ranger and riding a sports bike with my arse in the air either. I think cruisers biggest problem is their desire to be some sort of "luxury" item, prices of Harleys and Indians are obscene (The BMW probably too), especially if compared to the raw specs of them - and yes I know the specs isnt the whole story. But how are you gonna entice new riders to the cruiser type with prices like that?? Thankfully we have the Rebel 1100 to help with that.

Nice vid. Love the cruisers, indeed. As you know, I have a Triumph Speedmaster, which isn't quite all the way, but is enough cruiser to appreciate all the reasons you love Harleys, the R18 and the like. We're all 'bikers', but the sports bike thing is very different. I understand the 'thrill' of track racing, of course, but sports bikes on a public road? If you're doing it right, you're risking your licence and life, surely? And if you're not, what's the point? I like to ask sports bikers "have you got any good track times?" and when they, almost always, say "I don't take it on a track", that kinda ends the conversation for me, hehe. I've never 'got it'. To counterpoint my own apparently negative comment on sports bikes; *if* you're into bike racing as a sport (on the TV etc) then I totally understand why you'd want a racing style bike! A lot of wanting a cruiser or classic (or any type, I suppose) is the look, style and feel, of course. The difference with a classic or cruiser to me, though, is everything about it is 'usable'. Its purpose, reason and meaning is served every time you get on it. It's a whole and complete 'experience' every time. But for all bikes, as long as they make you grin, then that's good enough, isn't it? And any PTW is a ton more grin-inducing than a car, no?
