Ray, I still have my '06 Acura TL which was a CPO vehicle. Still love the car at 104k miles. I added a 2016 Sorento SXL 2 years ago for cargo needs which is also CPO and its been very reliable as well. Kia's bumper to bumper CPO warranty runs through 2023. Huge fan of CPOs.

In 2000, I bought a certified Civic from Hardin Honda in Anaheim California. I soon found out, they had lied about the car history; it had been in an accident. Hence, whatever the manufacturers certification requirements are, a dealership can always try to misrepresent a car. Luckily, I was able to return the car, but the dealership was nasty about it, and I had to force the issue.

@@mikexcanxjerk Great question. After about a week, the AIR BAG light went on. I took it to another dealership (Honda World Westminster) b/c it was close to my job. The service tech immediately noticed the front and rear license plates did not match. Then he examined the car, and pointed out some signs that indicated damage, and then told me that the VIN# on the car did not match the VIN# on the sales receipt/contract. He told me that because of the VIN# not matching, the deal was a wash. The rest of the story is also interesting and shows how deceitful and nasty Hardin Honda was being, but that's another story.

@Mario S. Here is what happened- short story. The person who had traded in the car that I bought showed up to Hardin Honda while I was there to get my money back. They had come because the heard what Hardin did to me, and they also raised hell. I was young, and just wanted to get my money back and move on with my life. I ended up getting my down payment and monthly payments refunded, which gave me enough to put a down payment on brand new Tacoma that I am still driving today...20 years and 243,000 miles later.

I am a huge fan of CPO programs. I bought my wife a 2017 MB in Jan 2020. The in service date was August 2017 so the MB warranty is good until August 2022. The car had 24k miles and the dealer had to put 4 new tires, brakes, and rotors in addition to making the car look new. In Mercades cost world could run $4000+. Maybe I paid a $2000 premium. for cpo. However, I got a car that would only cost basic maintenance for 2 1/2 years. Everything else is under warranty. It's like a buying a new car at half price. If the is any problem, they give you a nice loner car and you are on your way.

When I was shopping for a BMW i8, I only looked at CPO cars and found 13 examples. Most had some weird damage, like underbody panels hanging from under the car, tires with less than 5mm tread (I brought my own gauge), wheel and collision damage. I found one salesman who disclosed that they can certify anything and the benefit to me is the 1 year of extra warranty and if I wanted to negotiate on the damages, I could, but they would likely only drop the price by 50% to replace the broken items. LOL, I learned that at least for the i8, the dealers were trying to move the cars quickly before they depreciated beyond what they paid for the car and paying the $4k to 5k to "certify" the car, made it more appealing to sell it on the secondary market.

with Porsche, the 2 years unlimited miles will start when you buy it, if the car is out of original warranty. it is amazing. You could buy an 8 year old Porsche and if it is sold CPO, they give you another 2/unlimited miles. You could have a 10 year old car still under full factory CPO warranty

I'm glad you explained the difference between "Factory CPO" vs "Dealer CPO". I happened to be looking at an ad today for a "certified" 2018 QX80 with 98,500 kilometers. The car is offered certified by a GM dealer. The service records only show 3 oil changes. I wonder if that would pass Infiniti "certification". Also, the car only comes with balance of original factory warranty and a three month, 5,000km (3,000 mile) warranty.

At one dealership the negotiation of those accessories and install was pretty straight forward...another dealership wanted ridiculous amount of labor costs. How do you know what it costs to install these accessories. The price of these accessories is readily available...but labor costs is totally subjective. Ya'lls insight is greatly appreciated!!

Lexus has the best CPO program IMO. They add 2 years unlimited mileage warranty to whatever factory warranty is left. If you find a nice service loaner that has 5k miles or a newer low mileage vehicle, you can get a 6 year unlimited mileage bumper to bumper warranty. That's what I did for my last car, I bought an 2019 RX350 service loaner with 3k miles at a steep discount.

I like to buy cars that were previously leased, or rental cars. I know they were serviced on time every time and I also only get certified vehicles. You don't get hit with that initial depreciation and you still have warranty left. Also, I learned this with my last car... I bought an extended warranty for my Lincoln mkz hybrid, and it got totalled 2 years later. I called and got refunded the amount of the extended warranty I didn't use! I got $1700 back. My insurance lady told me to ask about it. I can't thank her enough.

I am a true believer in CPO. I'm only looking at CPO for a Mercedes E Class that I plan to buy in two months when the facelift starts selling. But the only cars that was not CPO that I bought 11 years ago was a Lexus from an Acura dealership. I wanted an Acura but they didn't have what I wanted and bought a 3 year old Lexus IS 350. I took a 3rd party warranty from Acura but it was a weird one to use when I took my car to Lexus for any repairs. I had to pay a $100 deductible and lucky for me, my Lexus didn't ever have any mechanical problems but only electrical. I traded that one in 4 years later for a CPO Lexus GS, and then made the move to Mercedes since then with one CPO E Class and then a previous C Class loaner in 2016 that was CPO from the same year. The sooner you get the CPO, the better the warranty. Mercedes CPOs have unlimited mileage!

The vehicle was on the dealer's lot for a while like 2 to 3 months. I went to the dealer on the last few days of June before closing out the first half of the year. When I was talking to the manager about the vehicle, he did admit that I came in at the right time. I ended up getting the car with extended warranties and $3000 less than the advertised price.

Always have a independent pre-purchase inspection done regardless if it’s CPO or not. I purchased a CPO 2015 Audi S7 from a new car Chicago Audi dealer owned by Auto-nation. It was a very expensive used car. Long story short purchased in the middle of February. Normally I do pre purchase inspection, but because I trusted that a CPO was true to what they advertised I didn’t bother. Anyhow I get the car home to Ohio and 10 days later, my mother calls me and says it looks like your paint is peeling off your rear bumper/diffuser. I blew her off, thought it was just soot from the exhaust. Later I found out it was paint peeling. I called the dealer they blew me off about the paint. $5k in paint work needed after we found out both bumpers were thrown on the car with shoddy bodywork. The dealer refused to show me the signed certification checkpoint worksheet. After 90 days of back and fourth and threatening a lawsuit they offered to buy it back for full asking plus all expenses incurred by me.

Would a CPO make sense if the car is only 2-3 years old? Since it’s relatively new with less miles (if its a lease car) on it and the dealership usually recondition it before putting it for sale. And pre-purchase inspection will usually let the buyer know if there’s any issue with any parts in the car.

2 years, unlimited mileage. Roadside assistance for almost anything, trip interruption, towing, loaner if your car will be in the garage more than 8 hours. I loved my CPO experience with Lexus & would do it again. I've heard Volvo's CPO is excellent also, but never owned one.

A few years back I was shopping for a nice used Toyota Land Cruiser. I located a few and hit the road to check them out. I got to northern Kentucky where the (large) Toyota dealer had to get the CPO vehicle back from the sales manager's house. It was caked in mud and generally trashed, with worn-out tires. As a joke, I asked about the CPO designation they advertised for that particular vehicle. They said, and I quote, "No problem. We will put new tires on and do the inspection. Only takes a few minutes." I shit you not. When I got to Indy, I found my Land Cruiser. Enjoyed it for 10 years.

Our 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport CPO just had it's engine seize at 80k miles under the reinstated 10y/100k miles power train warranty. The dealer paid for the towing, they're putting in a new engine for free and the cover 50% of the rental we drive now (didn't have a loaner available).

The question if it is worth it or not is easy to be answered, when you have an expensive breakdown is was worth it. I bought 7 month ago a CPO 2015 S550 and I added another 2 years for unlimited miles for $ 5000.00 +tax I just had both struts in front replaced by 88000 miles ,that would be over $ 4000.00 So ,yes it was worth it. Long time ago I bought an aftermarket warranty on a 1995 S500 ,I forgot for how much but for all that time nothing broke what was covered but these cars were known for evaporator failure (24 hour labor } that would have been covered ,also ignition harness So still worth for the peace of mind

In my opinion, the further away you are from vehicles with a solid record of reliability, the more CPO makes sense. I wouldn't pay extra for CPO on a Lexus/Toyota because it's probably going to run for at least 200,000 miles virtually trouble free assuming preventative maintenance is done in a timely manner and extreme driving conditions are avoided. At the other end of the scale, I would love to own an Alfa Romeo, but I would never own one that wasn't under a great warranty because the odds are much higher that it will have issues.

Most OEM dealers certify their used cars when they get them into inventory and pass inspection. A lot of used cars wont meet the criteria or it will cost to the dealer too much to certify that particular vehicle. A lot of manufacturers (not all) are very strict, a car can only be one owner, have no accidents, have all keys, remotes, books, no body, no paint work, zero, brakes, tires and wear and tear components have to have minimum wear (each manufacturer differs) all have to be original OEM parts, glass has to perfect, interior minimum wear, no discoloration overall vehicle in “like new” condition. If a it takes too much money to bring a used car that comes in from auction or trade to these high standards the dealership will just sell them as used and they will not get the prestige of the Manufacturer’s CPO badge along with qualifying for special financing terms and lower rates through that manufacturer’s financial institution which could be a big savings in rate on used car financing rates. Not only does a CPO go through a more rigorous inspection and reconditioning process, it gets an extended warranty, roadside, trip interruption, manufacturer’s financing ETC. Not all CPOs are equal. Lexus and Honda probably have the best ones out but it’s also the dealership too. Research the dealership and look at their reviews, not just the sales side of the house but the service side. A lot of people leave good reviews on the sales side because they bought a New car but the after sale and service was horrible or vice versa. In my opinion, CPO’s are worth it from the original manufacturer that has a great reputation and a history of good reviews and the right brand. Not all CPO programs are created equal.

I'm a fan of CPO, especially for non-Japanese brands that are typically less reliable. You get a lot more value out of it than buying a new car, and less of a gamble than buying a non-CPO used car for not much more of a markup.

17 minutes to answer the question if you should buy CPO (certified pre-owned)? Here's the answer in a few sentences: #1 The only advantage to CPO cars is they come with a manufacturer backed warranty, usually on just the powertrain components, but you pay for this warranty, it's built into the price. #2 You still have to take a CPO car to your local, trusted, PROFESSIONAL mechanic to take a look at it before you buy it if you don't know what you're doing. It may have been in an accident and cleaned up and painted. Dealers will certify ANYTHING. Repeat after me.... *DEALERS WILL CERTIFY ANYTHING!*

Just like car fax isn’t always accurate either. A leased car is in an accident, no police report, no insurance call, but fixed privately at owners expense. At lease end car is turned in and dealer claims a clean car fax report, on the used car lot it goes until sold to some unlucky chump! True story! I rather trust the CPO from a well known and highly regarded dealership with online testimonials. Private sales are price negotiable and that’s it, so you get what you pay for. Good luck 60-75K miles later, if a major part fails. Lexus would have the high reliability built in, they go over 200K easy.

Thanks for this video! I purchased a Certified Pre Owned 2019 Subaru Forrester from the dealership in Chicago on December 23, 2022. However In August of this year (2023) my car stopped driving. It wouldn't turn on. I got it towed to a dealership in NYC (where I am now) and they said there was 2-3 inches in the car under the floor board. They said there was lots of mold there too. They said the car is a total loss and I believe the car was sold to me that way but they are trying to make up every excuse to say that it is not there fault. The car is a total loss and no one wants to take responsibility for it. I was not in a flood. Is the certification supposed to cover issues like this? I am having problems and I don't know what to do...

Here’s the irony of the factory CPO programs. They will only take certain cars without issues after they were titled. Most of the cars that may have major issues within the warranty period were cars that didn’t go through the first run quality process out the door at the plant. This simply means the car’s were reworked at the plant before they were released to ship. A number of the potential issues for rework could be major issues. Weld repair, issues with bad wiring harnesses or the wrong ones put in the car, timing chain components, computer software issues. Once repaired inside the plant these cars are shipped and sold just like a first run quality vehicle.

People just look at a vehicles CARFAX report. When you see 'first owner reported' is when the warranty started & tells you how much time & mileage you have remaining. Anything CPO is 'limited' which means dealers will find a way not to pay.

Thanks for your videos. Knowing what to look for takes some of the stress out of used car buying. My question is: what is a reasonable price difference between CPOs and non-CPOs? Ray uses $2000 as an example a few times, but when I’m shopping around online the difference seems usually much bigger. On the franchised dealers I’ve seen, CPOs are at least $4000 more, and more often $6000+ more, compared to their uncertified counterparts. Why are these CPOs so much more expensive, and how much of a price difference between CPO and non-CPO is too much?

My last car bought was a Lexus CPO. I looked into what that meant but it didn’t factor too highly. The price difference compared to the same car at other dealers, non-CPO, was negligible.
