Why You Should Adopt 2 Cats Instead of 1

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

They say that two is better than one. But, does that apply to cat adoption? There’s no simple answer, but we’re going to try to break it down for you. In short, it totally can be!

2, 1 male and one female. They’re around the same ago (around 2 years old) I had the male first and he was a handful, so I got him a playmate. It helped his 3am Zoomies. No regrets. Both are the best, but I definitely recommend having 2 cats if you are gone during the day.

I got two kittens from a shelter (One year old today! 🎂😺) who’d shared a cage since tiny baby time. They support each other and are family. And they do play and keep each other company. Two boys, the only downside is they like to plop down on top of me to sleep in a catpile, and they’re heavy!

I have two, but they weren't adopted together. Socrates (male) is 14 and Tesla (female) is 10. Both are fairly laid back - Tesla in particular doesn't have an aggressive bone in her body - & inseparable. We moved recently, & they've definitely been cuddling together as they've adjusted to the new place.

We adopted 2 siblings, both males, from a cat rescue when they were a couple months old. I first met them a few weeks earlier, but they were still too young to be separated from their mother. They are both ginger cats. They get along well and still play, groom and chase each other around the house. We have had them 5 years now and would be lost without them. 🐈🐈❤️

Very thorough, thanks. I found a very sick female orange kitten. Once she got healthy and was spayed, I knew her sweet personality needed a companion. When she was 8 months old I adopted a male orange cat who was almost a year old. Best matchup ever. They act as if they were litter mates. Two is my limit but I get so much joy watching from both of them.

I recently adopted two kitties, at 13 weeks 🐱🐯. I would suggest doing so. 1. Their brother and sister, so no fighting. 2. Even when I'm gone, they both have a playmate. 3. While family, they have very different personalities. So that's fun to watch. 4. I love cats, so it's fun to have them...when they meet me at the door. 🐯🐱🐯🐱🐯🐱🐯🐱🐯🐱🐯🐱🐯🐱🐯

I've had a few tuxedo cats, Cyndi Clawper (who turned out to be male), Gilbert and George (brothers) and Black Puss & White Puss (rescue sisters, though White Puss wasn't a tuxedo). I had an orange tabby female kitten called Tango (an orange soda in the UK) and a Tabby kitten who adopted us after his mum got run over, he wasn't even weaned, we were in Italy for the summer, so had to get advice on how to feed and wean him and find him a home before we left, he was called Crazy Legs, and a tabby my daughter was given for her 4th birthday and she called it BizBiz and we currently have a farm cat who has adopted my husband, she's beautiful but no idea what mix. Not Mike is one of the best cat names I've heard.

We adopted a stray cat 3 years ago. He hung around the house for about 6 months before we took him in. Our 5 resident cats accepted him as part of the family immediately. There's never been any hostility but he gets quite upset when any other strays come around and he sees them in the yard. It's kind of funny. We adopted a kitten about a year ago and he was cranky for about a day, then accepted her as a companion.

We had a pair of male littermates that were best buddies but sadly lost one at only six years old, leaving the other brother absolutely devastated. We weren’t emotional ready for new kittens but knew we needed to get them as quickly as possible because the remaining cat was the type who needed his own tribe. We ended up getting a pair of 7wk old littermates that got along very well with each other, one male and one female. With something new to distract him, the older male’s grief started visibly easing fairly rapidly and he quickly bonded with the two new babies and “supervised” the raising of them. Three years later we have a tight-knit and harmonious feline family that we routinely find in a three-headed snuggle puddle.

A lot of vets offer discounts for multiple pets and pet insurance is always a great idea to think about when you first get your cats or even within the first couple of years. The pair of cats we have now both had all their teeth removed surgically, due to a genetic condition either before they turned 1 or before they turned 2, I think it was 1. We did not have the insurance then, though we have since taken it out. We are refunded 80 to 90% of the cost from everything from annual check ups, to surgery. I think perhaps even prescription drugs are included, but, I couldn’t swear to it. The price for the insurance is quite reasonable, especially when you have multiple pets.

She doesn’t even have a job the flat skinks of cat piss they haven’t had any of their jabs because she can afford them. And she goes out most nights leaving them alone in a one bedroom flat for hours each day. And now she has got attached to them and can’t do the right thing of giving them away to a better home. I would encourage people to adopt only one kitten first unless you have all your financial affairs in order and the space to house them.

It really depends on the cat's personality and upbringing, as the video says. I had a male cat for 16 years, most of the time on his own. When he was still youngish, I found a lost kitten in the lobby of my walk-up apartment (apparently abandoned by a human). I had him as my second cat for a while, and he was very happy, but my older cat was a bit withdrawn. After I left them both with friends while I was on vacation, they somehow let the younger one escape, and my older cat was back to a singleton. He immediately became very loving again and made it very clear that I was HIS human and he was happier with sole possession! Later, I had two sisters (litter mates) and they weren't that close and were very possessive/jealous of my attention. Didn't really play together. I do think two cats of the same sex are maybe not a good idea. Get a male and a female (both fixed) and maybe they will bond better. Less rivalry.

Then about a week later they found a litter of 5. Bottled fed them all n litter trained eating found homes for the 5 family member took the 1 that was tinier front legs seemed were broke or injured . She used them like hooks managed to get out of of the crate put them in to keep separate from older cat. Dog the orange one first found kept him. Boxer didn't hurt them daughter would put them all in front of him n said " watch the babies" he did. The girl with leg issue healed. Got her at 6 mo's old. Older cat accepted them . When older cat died they both took turns being by him when took him to get cremated they both watched what lady did to their older brother. They grieved him. Both are 9 yrs old. Loved all my fur babies all my life. So I think it depends on their personalities love they feel etc They're great Cats all animals are misunderstood .

He had his own room in the house and after a couple months he still refused to come out of it. He’d sit at the door and meow for everything. I decided we should get another cat. I’m no expert but I thought it would help him. The same day we brought that new cat home he came out of his room. Unfortunately, that new cat wasn’t very good with other animals so they were never friends but it did bring the first cat out of his shell and he went all over the house and started using the dog door and brought in presents for us all the time.

I adopted two white kittens; one for me and one for my daughter but I just couldn’t separate them so my daughter has those two. I went and adopted another two from the same litter. I totally agree that two are better than one. I have a large house with two adult cats and two dogs so I isolated them to a section of the house for about 5-6 weeks and spent a lot of time with them. They are now loose in the house and get along with the other cats and the dogs because they were introduced slowly.

Of course, on cat sites, it's heresy to say this. Cat lovers won't hear of anything negative. I have found that males cats want to be YOUR one and only. I can 100 % agree... i adopted two cats and it was the best decision. When i work all day, they are not alone, they have eachother as company and to play with. No matter how much your cat loves you, she needs company of her own kin to communicate and interact with. A Cat will feel anxiety when you leave her alone all day long and she will feel lonley. The cost for food will not be that much more and to see both my cats happy is worth gold. When i was sick with pneumonia i had constantly one of them sitting on my chest purring and warming my chest, trying to heal me. When one of them got tired and left to eat or drink or use the cat litter box the other Cat instantly came to "take over" and sit on my chest... that went on day and night, till i started to get a bit better... they were litterally working shift on me to nurse me when i was sick. Also in the nights when i sleep, i usually have one of them sleeping on my right side and the other one sleeping on my left side. So i can pet one with my right hand and the other one with my left hand. Perfect cuddle time. Also if you bring home a new partner, there will be less drama and they will not be that jelaous. Single cats can suffer extreme anxiety when a new life partner shows up, because they are so imprinted on you, it will hurt them to the core, if you sudenly cuddle and kiss someone else than them and give the cat less love and attention, it can break their hearts. But if they dont see you as their mommy, but instead as a member of their pack, they will also be more relaxed about accepting your new partner into "their family".

I cannot wait!! 😁 My resident cat is 2-going on 3 and isn't agressive or territorial at all. She's crazy & silly at times, but is an absolute sweetheart. I just *know* she would love having a playmate and companion. I not only hope for this to happen, to adopt a suitable kitten from my local animal shelter, but also pray for it. I'll probably edit this comment if it becomes a reality & if I remember. Lol! 🙏🙏🙏

I currently have four cats, two males and two females; my older male, Tigger (currently 20) and older female, Darla (now 13) were adopted at the same time and are buddies, then we got the younger female, Lilly(currently 7) after another cat I used to have died of cancer, and can annoy the older two but they get along for the most part. The younger male, Shadow (2 or maybe 3 years old) was a street cat that was hanging around the backyard every night and we eventually caught him and brought him in, checking with the vet, not finding any microchip or lost cat posters for him anywhere, so we just took him in. Currently he's shy around the other three, but both the girls have been sniffing around where he's been

I TOTALLY agree with adopting 2 kittens at the same time. As for cats? Yes, they should be a bonded pair or at least be able to tolerate each other. Also? I disagree about the sexes. Unless they're litter-mates (and, obviously, neutered) it's better to adopt two of the same sex since females rarely bond with males. Even neutered, females tend to be a bit standoffish toward males. At least most of the time. I did have one set of kittens who were male/female siblings and they got along great with each other and my older cat. But they were exception. Females just tend to be wary of males. At least, that's been my experience. As far as adopting older cats is concerned, it does take a few extra steps and some patience but it's not that hard. I've adopted older cats several times and, while it can take up to 6 months for them to bond with you (one took about 3 years and only after I saved his life), but it's worth the wait. Once they do bond, it's a big deal to them, even more so than with a kitten. Here's what I did when added a 4th cat to my home. First, I was also his 4th owner and, at 15, he was very much an older cat. So he had already been through a lot. His take on arrival was probably "what fresh hell is this?" LOL! He had never lived with other cats and, as he was declawed by his first owner, he had never been outside. My cats all had their claws and went outside as often as they liked. I began by putting him in a separate room, with the door closed for 3-4 days. This gave him time to "decompress" and adjust to a new environment. Also, it gave him time to learn I was his new owner. I visited him 6-8 times a day, not just to feed him and clean his box, but to visit as well. Each time I just came and would approach him unless he showed any anxiety. Then I just sat. He stared at me and I stared back. If he tried to hide, I left. I wasn't punishing him; I was trying to show him that I was not a threat. By the end of that time, he let me pet him a little-- then would back off. I backed off, too, so he knew I understood. Also, I made sure to pet my cats just before a visit and offered to let him smell my hand during a visit. Then, when I left the room, if I had pet him, I let my cats smell my hand, too. his is one good way to introduce cats/dogs to each other. After those first few days, I left the door to his room open. My other cats, of course, were curious and wandered in and out. For the first few days I monitored this, letting my cats know they could not harm this new cat. I never forced him out of the room. I left it up to him when he wanted to emerge. I continued feeding him there and kept his box in there. About 2-3 days he finally, briefly emerged-- before scurrying back into "his" room. This went on several times a day for about 5 days. After that he would emerge and stay out of the room more than in. At this point, I moved his box and food so they were in the same areas as the others'. But, of course, he had his own area to eat, apart from all others, in the kitchen, with his own water. I also kept using the bowls he came with, so everyone knew this was his. It was probably another few weeks before he "joined" the group, i.e., stayed on a couch when they joined him or wasn't afraid to approach them, etc. There wasn't any fighting and, eventually, he took his place on my lap on a regular basis. While he could never go outside alone, I did take him out on a leash with a harness regularly so he wasn't jealous of the others. We all lived together for another four years before he passed. He was 19. I hope he enjoyed his last few years with us.

One thing I want to add: Whenever you have more than one cat, DO step in when there's tension-- whether it seems like one cat is pestering the other or if there's a direct confrontation. DO step in and stop them. Never allow them to be aggressive toward each other. They will ALL respond to this. You're the mom and they will accept whatever you say. So do not sit back and let them work it out for themselves. Even if you do, they may remain distant but will tolerate each other. If you do nothing, you may unwittingly be sewing the seeds of civil war.

My experience with the two sexes is the opposite. The females, though loving, are usually more "self-contained" and it's the boys that want attention and cuddling. Of course, everyone is neutered, so that may have something to do with removing the independent streak of the males. IMHO, the males tend to be more affectionate (ie, "needy") and the females are smarter.

As mentioned in the video, it is very important for kittens to have another cat in their life during the first year for normal development. Adopting litter mates usually works out best, although kittens introduced to each other early also work out well. Two cats keep each other company. A bored cat is a potentially mischievous cat.

There is no window. The key is to find the matching character. One further challenge is that your home is your cats territory. A further cat will be seen as an intruder. But there are techniques to solve that problem. Play pattern, body strength, socialisation, etc all things to consider with the correct companion. If in doubt, there is professional help available. But don't stress your self about it! It is far worse to join 2 random cats by chance. It's wrong to assume that 2 kitten will become and stay friends. It is equally wrong to assume that siblings will result in beeing the perfect match.

That’s still misleading information. You should be clear in your pros and cons for adopting two at the same time. The cons are double the finances for food, vet bills because cats don’t get ill together, double the mess that means more cat poo equally double the cat litter. Owning one cat is nearly as expensive as owning a dog the only difference is you can leave a cat for longer periods of time if litter trained.
