Why You Only Like Boring Watches (Tudor and Rolex included).

Dah, we aren't talking about Rolex, Tudor, or Omega today. We must be prepared to get slaughtered on views. BUT what we ARE talking about is why we are just so boring. Why do we always go after the simple, small, plain watches and not want more? Whatever happened to going big or going home? It seems like everyone just went home!

Today, Christian and Michael dive into a few subjects, most notably - why do we all seem to love boring watches?
Before we do that, though, we take a look at three exciting watches that maybe don't get enough attention. First up, we have the Hublot Big Bang Turquoise Aluminum, a ~$20k watch that is an absolutely fascinating piece to look at. Its loud, fun, and that date wheel placement is bold as they come. Next up, we have what we've dubbed the "Girls Night Out Watch," The JLC Reverso Tribute Hokusai Enamel. It's one of the most elegant Reversos we've ever seen, and arguably one of the most elegant watches period, though JLC has some explaining to do regarding that price point at $95k. And finally, we move on to the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical in bronze. It's a no-nonsense tool watch that can be worn everyday with a wide range of outfits and in a wide range of situations. Nuff Said.
So why do we want boring watches when such interesting pieces are being produced all the time by brands new and old? In the US, at any rate, style is a very conservative thing, by and large. Not so much in the sense that it's boring, though some of it certainly is, but more in the sense that there's an expected level of individuality mixed in with a certain level of conformity. So we gravitate towards the things that will garner us the most praise or acclaim from our peers, the things we know will be uncontroversial, or safe. Is this the right move? Probably not, but it's certainly the culture many of us grew up in that has followed us into adulthood, and we have to reckon with that.

My two cents, the average consumer doesn’t have endless cash. When you make a substantial purchase, you want to be able to wear it with everything. A stand out crazy piece is harder to match with the average wardrobe. We want something that we can curate with our existing objects. So that we can get the most “value” about said object. The question then, is why do we have boring wardrobes? I will say young millennials and Gen Z is breaking this mold. Look at how so many brands are swinging towards the “crazy” and “unique” the rerelease of the must de line. The colorful dial rolex OP’s. They want colorful and eye catching, their outfits are more wild. Think of a Nike Chunky Dunky. You cant wear a boring watch with that.

@@OuijTube while I agree that an Apple watch is a useful tool, it is only that, a tool. You can't dive with it, you need to plug it every so often and it's not so original and doesn't express personality. You're only but more and more connected. My iPhone already counts my steps, the distance I walk and the height I climb. I can dive with some of my watches, and I can check my heartbeat with a finger on my wrist or my throat and my eyes on the second hand of my watch. I disagree that wearing a mechanical watch is pure fashion, there is a category for that and it is called fashion watches, with the Gucci, DW, Michael Kors and etc. I agree with you that there is a part of frivolity in wearing a luxury watch, but I don't think it's a big deal for most if they buy one luxury watch at a price lower than 10k. I think that there are plenty of watches in the sub 500$ category, like many Seiko, Orient, Vostok, Swatch and the likes. Many vintage watches can be found below the 1k mark too. Compare all that with the price of an Apple watch and the cost of buying a new one every few years, or having to buy another fashion watch because they cease to function out of cheapness, or because the cost of servicing it would be almost as high as buying a new one. Mechanical watches are objects of style and art that escapes obsolescence and their quality makes them last and escape the downsides of consumerism. I think that just like every man needs a suit (weddings, funerals, job interview, special events, etc), every man needs a good watch, may it be only an Orient Bambino for example. I agree that a smartwatch, or a sportswatch can be really useful, but only in certain contexts and they have no soul. I own a vintage Speedmaster, a Yema Pearldiver (my daily watch these days), a Seiko 5 SNK 809 and many Vostok Amphibia and Komandirskie (both new and soviet era vintage ones). I'm passionate about horology since 2017, but even before that I dreamed of owning a mechanical watch (my dad gave me a fake Rolex in 2010 and it got me to research on horology). I stopped wearing quartz watched around 2012, relied only on my phone for years, but now I find enjoyment and pleasure wearing mechanical watches and being in the watch world. There is peace of mind also, I can time my hikes with my Speedy, swim with my Yema and not be bothered by notifications. When I'm at the lake I want to time the time before I burn under the sun, not being annoyed by vibrations on my wrist at every notification. When I'm canoeing down a river, my phone is safely in the car and I can use my watch to track time and plan my day accordingly. When I go to formal events, I wear a watch that fits my outfit and it is refreshing to wear a different watch on different days. Of course an Apple watch has more functions than a mechanical watch, I'm not gonna pretend it's not a useful tool. But if I was to eventually own a smartwatch, I'll only wear it when needed, like I don't wear sportswear when I don't do sport. But, the other thing is, I hardly see what I could do with a smartwatch that my iPhone can't do. A mechanical watch is a way to express personality, build up personal style and be interested in a topic that escapes every day concerns. Plus, the aesthetic of nice watches is comforting every time I look at my wrist to check the time. I understand that not everyone can wear and own a luxury watch, would it be only because of the amount produced and not the price, but there is a lot out there to enjoy.

Its because 30 year olds are practical…my apple watch is literally a computer on my wrist…the level of technology a watchmaker could never dream of nor achieve and above all, it tells time more accurately than any mechanical watch out there. Like why pay $20k for a piece of jewelry that just happens to tell time less accurately than my apple watch. Not our fault we don’t buy into the fashion marketing you guys fell into.

General lack of risk tasking from the big brands. Microbrands are where the big risks are taken with more unusual designs - and big brands can pick up on trends later on with less risk - e.g. this Hamilton doing bronze is something other brands have been doing for a few years already

Great vid! Love the show and patter. I agree with the sentiments. The watch industry needs to evolve with the times, as do the consumers. As much as love watches, the arrogance and arguments around tradition and aesthetic are exhausting at times. Wear what you want, when you want. Wear it for yourself. Watch media. You can position yourself as high culture - sponsor golf, sailing and other high net worth activities. This doesn’t make you aspirational to me, nor luxury. It’s quite the opposite. You are actively dissuading me and many from the brands. Anyway, I also had a question…. Why the name Theo and Harris? Where did the name come from? I imagine this has been covered but I’ve always been curious. All the best, Andre.

I really liked the content/discussion in this video. The idea that we should buy/wear what we "like" as opposed to picking the "safe/popular" watch that may retain its value better, but may not make us happy, is no way to live. I love the Bvlgari Octo Finissimo in steel, but part of me says, "That's not a good buy... better to get a steel Yacht Master because it should go up in value." The problem is, I LOVE the Octo FInissimo, and though the Yacht Master is a nice watch, it doesn't do anything for me, personally. Unless we are flipping watches, it doesn't make sense to buy "safe" if we don't even like the watch that much. The flip side to this thought process is I bought a Panerai several years ago (which I loved back then), but I have fallen out of love with it. If I had bought a steel sub back then, it would be worth double what I paid for it today... but I never really loved the sub (another very nice watch that doesn't make my heart soar). Again, I really liked the discussion in this video because I think every watch fan struggles with this type of buying decision. "Safe" often times does not lead to "happiness."

If I'm going with a more expensive watch then it will be a "boring watch". Something that suits almost all situations. However, for the non boring watches the casio and timex price points will do for me. For the Hublot: Teal Casioak JLC Japanese inspired: Timex/The Met collab, or the swatch wave one. Hamilton bronze field watch: Timex Allied, comes black military style face and bronze coloured case. Or Boderry has one Bonus - GMT Pepsi Rolex: Timex Q pepsi GMT. These are more my budget for a non boring watch all under $200, most under $100. Inexpensive, eye catching, ok if I loose or break it, and just a fun piece to wear to like a casual work environment or hanging out. Not taking anything too seriously.

I just have enough to get a few staples. I wish I had the money to get the out-of-the-box stuff! And I guess my final thought would also be practicality. Most of the strange watches I like are a bit more dressy! And wouldn't get enough wear for me to justify the price. BUT, EVERYTHING I HAVE SAID HERE, y'all have said in your video! This ties in with cost, too. When you've got Rolex dreams on a Timex income, you need the expensive watch to go with as many outfits as possible. That means you go for relatively understated watches. Drop the price down to Timex/Swatch/G Shock levels and the risk drops. You an have a big variety of "fun" watches for the same money.

For me the interesting watches are lesser known vintage models and certainly not a red swatch or a hublot and I have a lot of fun with them even if they are quite restrained in their design, so where the fun lies is quite individual

I think that the reason is that if you spend a lot of money on a "crazy design" watch you feel you can get bored pretty fast, therefore people buy watches that will last in time in that sense.

I’d wear a bright watch for a small cost. But I wouldn’t go and buy an expensive watch with a bright dial because it wouldn’t go with as many outfits as the ‘boring’ black/navy dial would and I couldn’t afford to have 1-2 luxury watches with it being a mad bright colour.

Be who you are first!! If you like color wear it and enjoy. I have different styles in my collection because some days you want a bold look or a conservative look it doesn't matter. This thing we share about watches is about fun and personal taste. We are a small community in a big world.

That's a good description of Hublot and RM watches. They are fun. They aren't worth even a fraction of their price, but they are fun. If I was a billionaire, I would throw away a couple thousand on that turquoise Hublot as a laugh. However, spending tens or hundreds of thousands o a Hublot or RM is just tasteless.

That Hokusai JLC is a great watch.. However this artists work has been slapped on all sorts of merchandise recently (uniqlo Tee’s for example) which is really diluting how amazing it is. Feels like a ‘fashion’ watch at $95k which is a strange move by JLC, something I would have expected from Swatch or something.

Regarding the "boring watch thing", it may be more that, regardless of what the internet community believes, the market is more heavily determined by individuals that don't want to buy several watches. Venturing into the luxury sphere isn't something the average consumer would want to do more than once or twice; the purchase is usually a capstone to an achievement or event. The Rolex palm dial is incredibly cool, but the people that would buy that would be people that already own a "sober" Rolex/Cartier/etc. The red g-shock/yellow swatch argument is very reasonable, though. It would be nice to see folks be more playful in their attire.

"Boring" exists for a reason. You wouldn't show up to a wedding in an Hublot would you? No, you'd probably show up in a Cellini if you've got the budget for it. I myself have my "fun" watch which is my Seiko Giugiaro Speedmaster. It's bold, brash and quartz funny enough. But it's SO cool. I wear it super casually if I have an outfit that wouldn't fit my other watches. Fun is casual. Boring is more likely to be formal.
