To be fair some people DO need one, if you have a gap, severe open bite, or severe lower crowding can all cause you to need one. But for most people it’s because we think you’re too lazy to wear your retainer 😅 SO WEAR IT OK! ❤

Me too. If you were a minor and they just looked at you and treated you like a kid, they'll assume your best interests and make that decision for you. The real curse was those damned Hawley retainers I'd fidget with and that constantly breaks. Now I don't bother with a retainer for my top teeth anymore but I still have the bonded one over a decade later. Some studies show that these bonded retainers help keep the upper teeth straight by ensuring the bottom doesn't shift and put forces on the upper ones causing the shift. Later, I had a phase where I hated my lower retainer and wanted it off but then they'd make me a lower one and I told them with a straight face that I wouldn't wear it so my options were to remove it and have nothing or keep it but since the roots of my lower incisors resorbed and they aren't strong enough on their own, and the bonded retainer acts like a splint that strengthens the teeth. I notice very quickly when it breaks as I feel my teeth wiggle and the texture on my tongue. Nowadays unless it's physically attached to me, don't even bother because I won't wear it.

I have a lower permanent retainer that’s been there ever since my braces came off in middle school. I had the gum resorption problem on 1 tooth and have to have a tissue graft done in high school & it was absolutely traumatic from the numbing shot wearing off while the Dr was stitching. He straight up paused mid-stitch to ask if it wore off as I was fully crying in the chair 💀

That is horrible I hope you can find a new better dentist. I am an assistant over 17 years and that is absolutely unacceptable!!! It is 2023, with current advances there is zero reason to be in pain in the chair (aside from severe infection which makes numbing nearly impossible but even then we can give you sleepy juice or happy gas or straight up sedation lol). A good dentist will take the time and care to be methodical and gentle and will educate and require all of his staff to do the same. 🥰

Mine was only attached to my bottom canines; a couple years ago, one side popped off when i was trying to floss. My permanent retainer broke twice recently. The second time literally happened the day after it was fixed. Both times happened when I was flossing. And I barley used any strength when doing it. I literally happened when I started flossing. And today was when my orthodontist told me that I do not need to keep the permanent retainer in my mouth and that I can just wear the regular ones at night. I just got the permanent one out today. It feels so much better to not have it in my mouth for the rest of my life. I forgot how good it feels to have my teeth all smooth. While I don't like cleaning my regular retainer all the time, it's better than having the permanent retainer in my mouth and struggling with flossing.

I've had mine for over a decade. It broke a few times and I had a phase where I wanted it off but then I'd have to wear a removable one and I told them with a straight face to not bother making one because I won't wear it. I fidget too much and the removable one I had on the top would break every 4 months or so. Permanent ones can be reattached easily. These retainers are stronger than braces and floss threaders and water flossers help tremendously! People generally just suck at flossing, and I used to be guilty of this. The other reason I have one on my lower incisors is due to root resorption and my teeth aren't very strong on their own so I notice rather swiftly when some of the bonding breaks because my tooth has movement and there's a notable difference in texture. My tongue playing with the part acts as a constant reminder to get it fixed.
@4NeonFun
Жыл бұрын
An interesting thing is that I haven't worn my top retainer for several years since it was a Hawley retainer that continuously breaks and I stopped bothering with it when the insurance refused to cover it. My teeth barely shifted, in fact that shifting was basically the teeth settling into their positions. Studies have shown that the forces your bottom teeth exert on the top ones can cause them to shift and since the lower incisors have smaller roots, they are the most likely to shift. The study also shows that as long as your bottom teeth are in the proper positions, it will help retain the positions of their corresponding teeth (upper & lower).

I was given a permanent and plastic one. At some point in the 3 weeks between getting my braces off and my biannual dentist appointment… the permanent one broke. My dentist pointed it out to me and showed me what a broken one looked like. It was behind my two top front teeth so I couldn’t see it without using a mirror. I called my ortho and got an appointment for a couple days later to fix it (wearing my retainer full time as I was supposed to) and they SCOLDED ME for not coming in when it first broke. I said I don’t know what they expected me to do. It wasn’t obviously broken (the bond came partially off the back on one tooth). In order to see it was broken… I would literally have to be poking around and looking for it with dentistry tools which normal people don’t do. And I called them the day I found out it was broken. The lady also scolded me because my teeth were still crooked (I was an early deband) and she said she could see I wasn’t wearing my retainer and that my teeth have moved so much that they can’t be fixed without braces again. I told her I’d been wearing it religiously and she called me a liar. Then she pulled up the pictures that were taken of my mouth the day I got them removed and realized I was telling the truth. I was super embarrassed because there were other chairs in the room and the other patients could see and hear her scolding me

Tell her to get floss threaders and a waterpik. It works wonders! If you fidget a lot or have resorbed roots like me, bonded retainers are magnitudes better. 90 seconds of flossing with threaders is way better than having an expensive and equally delicate fidgit in your mouth all day. It's completely up to you, you know you best. If you don't lose things often and don't fidgit a lot and have trouble flossing still, a clear removable retainers are best (make sure you clean it when you brush your teeth) Whatever you do don't get a Hawley retainer (the ones made of acrylic and metal wires) mark my words if you thought bonded retainers break a lot have never dealt with Hawleys as those things are the devil's incarnate and straight up evil!

When I got my braces, my dentist told me that he’s not going to put a permanent retainer in and instead work on why the teeth are moving. He told me that when I swallow, I’m pressing my tongue against the teeth which isn’t good. So I had to take logopedics sessions to correct my swallowing and it helped. But it doesn’t mean you don’t have to wear a removable retainer. Because when I stop using mine, and after a few months tried it again, it didn’t fit anymore. So I’m just putting this out there, hope this helps!

It is 2023, with current advances there is zero reason to be in pain in the chair (aside from severe infection which makes numbing nearly impossible but even then we can give you sleepy juice or happy gas or straight up sedation lol). My boss got her permanent retainer for 26 years now. Never had an issue. When you put the on corectly it wont come off The way they put the one on the picture is so wrong. You need to put a thin layer of composite on the WHOLE back of the tooth. Bot just a drop. If your orthodontist does it like the picture, they want it to break so they can make more money out of you.

So that's why they broke after three weeks..
This just reminded me to wear my removable retainers to sleep which I was procrastinating on lol
This the only guy in history that’s taking care of your teeth digitally! 🎉
The fact that most orthodontists don’t give you a choice is so frustrating. I never had an issue with wearing my retainer before braces, but I still ended up with a permanent one on my bottom teeth and all the restrictions that come with it.
My siblings stole my retainers and were wearing them like vampire teeth. Mom didn't care, and they were lost to the void. My teeth have shifted a little over the years, but they are still way better than they were. No longer called dog mouth for my overlapping canines.
Mine was only attached to my bottom canines; a couple years ago, one side popped off when i was trying to floss. I mentally gave my ortho the middle finger since he never asked me before putting it in, and i never wanted it anyway, so i went to my dentist to get it removed. Among the top 5 best decisions I've ever made.
I just recently had my lower permanent retainer removed. The bonding crumbled away and the wire was just flopping around lol. $7000, and not being told you'll need to do this for the rest of your life was pretty disappointing
I have pernament retainer for almost 2 years now and i love it. I dont feel it at all, they put it hight enought its easy for me to floss, my gums are allight and i dont have to remember about anything.

I did NOT have a choice😂 they were like "here now you have this for the rest of your life"
Not even my orthodontist but her helper was going to force me to come back for the permanent retainer then I started crying at the reception. My mother then asked my orthodontist and she said it was the removable retainer. Not sure why her helper wants to take control she even hates me. Her helper is even rough too with her duties on me when I had to get braces adjustments. So yeah, temporary is what I want. And my orthodontist the professional said the temporary retainers were my aftercare not permanent retainers. That helper was going to ruin me for real. I have my braces off and I am using my removable retainer. The helper is not the professional.
I was given the permanent retainer, no choice, but it's probably for the best. I was also given overnight retainers because I kept grinding my teeth in my sleep, but it was so bad that I kept breaking the retainers.
My orthodontist put one on me without asking and then refused to take it off. Eventually it broke off and he refused to remove the left over glue stuff that was still there and said that he would only put the permanent retainer back on but I refused. I stopped seeing the orthodontist and I had to go to an all new dentist office before I could get the left over glue removed. That was also the day I found out that my old dentist had never scraped the tartar off my teeth in my entire childhood.

Me who has just decided to live with and love my tooth gap because the pain of having braces and shit for a moderate increase in attractiveness just isn't worth it
I have one, they never gave me an option, they just put it on. But, for flossing, I use the little “Christmas tree” brush they give you when you first get braces to clean your brackets. I just shove it in between my teeth and it works pretty well!
I got my braces off, got a removable retainer, wore it religiously, and within a month my teeth had bent my retainer out of shape and were almost back in their original positions. I went back, got lower braces on for another few months, and then got a permanent retainer attached for about 4.5 years. One day it detached from one of my teeth, and when I went to the orthodontist, they let me just get it taken off and I got another removable one. Four years on and the removable one has been plenty this time around!

This is my plan, wear the permanent retainer for a few years (at least one year) then switch to removable at night time.
My orthodontist actually complemented how much I wear my night retainer. The reason I have a permanent braces on my two front teeth and 75% of my lower teeth is because my teeth don't like being told what to do . I also am going to have them until I get my wisdom teeth removed so there is still hope!
I have a closed up gap and only had to get top braces (and a palate expander for a year). I got a bonded retainer and was asking about the cons because I remembered this video and the lady told me "oh well mine has lasted 15 years!!" and then told me when to pick my actual retainer up.
I didn't get a choice😢 I'm stuck with a permanent retainer. They also gave me this floss with a harder end that's supposed to slide underneath, but it doesn't work, so I just brush super good, and skip the flossing part

I requested permanent when given the option. Only issue I had was the bonding wore down and the wire started sticking me. My biggest regret was allowing the Dr. to switch my wire to titanium. If you don't lose things often and don't fidgit a lot and have trouble flossing still, a clear removable retainers are best (make sure you clean it when you brush your teeth) Whatever you do don't get a Hawley retainer (the ones made of acrylic and metal wires) mark my words if you thought bonded retainers break a lot have never dealt with Hawleys as those things are the devil's incarnate and straight up evil!
i didn’t get a choice on whether to get a permanent one or a plastic one, they told me they were going to give me both and then didn’t give me a plastic one and when my permanent broke, the lady said “well someone hadn’t been wearing their retainer” “SARAH NO ONE GAVE ME ON GIRL MIND YOIR BUSINESS!” smh 🤦♀️
I asked my orthodontist for a permanent retainer on the bottom only because they would move a ton within one day. it hurt very badly to put them on at night, even after 6 weeks full time.
i was given a permanent retainer by an orthodontist who only anchored it to two teeth at the ends. it snapped twice before i insisted on having it removed so i could go to college without worrying what i would do when it inevitably broke again. i now have a plastic retainer like i always should have. and yes, i wear it.

I've been just fine with my permanent retainer. I just buy those tips to floss, and it doesn't feel broken. It just feels like it always has but without any pain.
I NEED BOTH! THEY WILL GIVE ME THE PERMANENT ONE AND ILL NEED TO WEAR A RETAINER 😢
I got a permanent retainer and actually got used to it. But flossing was a major issue. It eventually broke, so I got a normal retainer, which I had to wear every night. It's much better, and I integrated wearing them into my routine, so I barely forget them.
When I got my braces off after almost 6 years of having them on. I literally was on the cusp of having a panic attack when they were pulling out more wire. I'm so glad I asked because I really have never ask. I looked at her like she was crazy and I said hell no. You are not gluing more metal in my mouth that I have to come back to get fixed. So I got retainers instead.
I didn’t want a permanent retainer, but they put one on me today, I didn’t even get a choice I believe

My dad had to get permanent retainers after he got his braces taken off a third time when he was 35. He still hasn't broken his on accident, and he has had no issues with flossing, mind you he's 48. Sometimes it is worth it if you really are that bad at remembering your retainer.
After i took my braces off my dentist gave me the removable ones, i'm so grateful to him
When i went to my orthodontist, i didn't even get a choice. It was just "Yoop, here's your permanent retainer"

Its a blessing that my teeth is always good and not having a problem
I have them on the top and bottom and an Invisalign retainer on top which I regret not wearing in my late teens and leaving behind when I moved out in 2020 so I'm getting a new one now that I'm taking care of myself again. I'm really lucky that after 10 years, my bonded retainer is still almost completely intact. There's a tiny bit of movement if I bite down really hard on a specific bottom tooth but it doesn't move when brushing my teeth or at the dentist sooo I guess it's a win.
I love my permanent retainer, I’ve done the removable retainer and I hated it.
It wasn't actually made clear to me that I was supposed to wear the retainer from then on. And it got a weird hole in it and they didn't explain how to clean it so it was just generally gross (I mean, I did use soap and water, so no germs, but it smelled). Anyway that ended up in the trash less than a year after I got my braces off. So glad young folks today have more resources for good information!
I’m so retroactively disappointed in my orthodontist because when I got my braces off and went to the appointment where they gave me my retainer it didn’t fit. I told them that it didn’t fit and they said they could make me a new one but I would have to pay for a new one because “nothing was wrong” with this one. I could not, at 15 years old, go tell my recently widowed mother that she needed to pay for another retainer. So I never wore it, because it never fit. For some reason it took me years to realize that I was not at fault for that situation.
tbh i’m glad i got top and bottom removable retainers, i just cannot stand the taste of etch anymore.
So you're telling me, that even AFTER I get my braces off, there's a chance that I'll just get _more_ permanent ones afterwards??
i had braces at a really young age (in fourth grade on my front four teeth) and they gave me a permanent retainer. but they put it on, it felt really weird. after like a year or two the wire popped out and stabbed my tongue. they had to cut off the broken part and still till this day i have half of a permanent retainer!
