As someone who dailies a Pilot Vanishing Point, I can say that the clip being where it is actually makes the pen super comfortable to use. At least on the Vanishing Point, the clip acts a perfect thumb rest when it's being held in the correct orientation - which also means you don't have to even look at which way the nib is facing before trying to write. As long as your thumb is resting against the clip, you can feel that you're holding it with the nib facing the right way. (The ability to know you've got the nib facing the right way without ever looking may even be one of the best features about the Vanishing Point actually 🤔)

The retractable fountain pen is just great. I own three. The original model was plastic but the plastic cracked under pressure so the pen was re-engineered and made of metal. The pen does not leak and writes like a dream. The converter sometimes sticks so seriously that it cannot be extricated from the pen without risking damage to the converter itself. I use cartridges but have to re-order them periodically. This is not as bad as it sounds since they are reasonably priced, so far. Another problem is that the nibs will get bent if the pen is dropped. A replacement nib is not cheap. For a smooth line, convenient operation, and storage with the nib up, so drying is even less of a risk than usual, the vanishing point fountain pen is truly one of the best ideas to emerge in pen manufacture in decades.

@@archangeli Hi there! We're sorry about that, our KZread glitched and it replied to the wrong comment. When it comes to flying with fountain pens, you should either fill the pen entirely or empty it, though if you keep the nib upright the entire time leaking should not be a huge concern. The only time a problem may occur is if there's a moderate amount of air in the ink chamber, as the air will expand due to pressure changes and push ink into the cap.

@@LaLa_ArtGal Hi, not the person you're replying to, but I have two Preppys so far. I've only had them for... maybe two months? And these are some of my first fountain pens as well, so please keep that in mind. I have a blue Medium nib (0.5) that I've been using with the blue-black cartridge that comes with it. It works well on cheap paper and doesn't bleed though to the other side, also not much ghosting either. The M nib might be a bit big if you have tiny handwriting, or have to fill in teeny-tiny boxes on forms. As I'm using the cartridge, it took maybe a minute to have the ink saturate the feed, so if you get it right out of the box and pop the cartridge in, go make a cup of tea/ coffee/ cocoa and it will be ready to go when you're back. I haven't had any problems with it drying out, or hard starting even after storing it nib up for about two weeks. I also have one of the Preppy Wa limited editions (the black with gold flowers in hexagons) that one has a Fine (0.3) nib and is using the black cartridge in it. I like the Fine nib a little better since I write on the smaller side/ have terrible hand writing. With the M I have to remember to leave a bit more room on top loops so my "e" doesn't look like a "c" and such. My main concern is that the plastic body can crack if you over-tighten it, but it hasn't been too much of an issue yet for me when it happened to my M nib pen. To sum up the novel I just wrote you: Preppys are a great place to start with fountain pens. Inexpensive. easy to use. And if you hate them, easy to give away to someone who might want to try a fountain pen.

Fountain Pen and Roller ball? No thanks. I might be interested if both ends were a fountain pen with shut-off to prevent ink leakage, and a fine rigid nibs, so loading two different colors of ink was an option; black and red, green, blue, or some other color for your signature, for example. As it is, I'll just carry two or more regular pens with different inks. Less hassel that way.
