Fun fact: sure the sharpener might be the thing breaking your pencils, but more likely is that when you drop it, the actual lead breaks on the inside, so it might actually be you the one who is breaking pencils unintentionally

I am an architect, and the first thing I learned in university is that regular paper cutters are the best sharpeners for all kinds of pencils (given you don't mind putting the shavings in a dustbin afterward). The blades are also easy to break into sections to have a sharper edge or simply to replace the entire blade if needed.

5:00 My cousin sister once gifted me this sharpener when i was in smaller grade but it had a piggy design instead of this yellow.. I'm telling ya, having this sharpener is really great for people who wants to sharp a lot of pencils, and is lazy to throw the shades away.. Also, when the pencil is sharpened the right way and not too over sharpened, it stops in its way.. The only con about this masterpiece is that it's big.. so it can't be fit inside your regular pencil boxes or pouches.. Overall an amazing product.. It still works now even after more than 7 years..

The KUM masterpiece is a must-have for graphite artists and painters. Classical technique tells us to hold the pencil like a lollipop, with the shaft under your palm, not over the crook of your thumb. We're taught to sharpen a long point by exposing an inch or more of the graphite by shaving with a razor blade, then sanding it to a taper. With the Masterpiece, you can expose as much graphite as you like with a simple twist, and no fear of a cut with a dirty razor blade. I myself have made sharpeners like this by cutting off part of the blade, but this one from KUM looks so much more professional and probably cuts more consistently. Will buy!

These are the definition of overengineered and I am here for all of them!
The 2 step sharpener is a beast. It's a staple in my drawing kit for years.
I love the fact that you guys do outtakes!!! They’re so funny and add a human element to your videos
I've had a T'Gaal for years and it's the best thing to happen to my colored pencils. Since I need a point often, the size control really lets me waste less and keep my soft core colored pencils in one piece. It's honestly amazing and a game changer.
Thanks, Jet Pens. I have an older Blackwing sharpener that looks just like the two Kums you modeled here. I missed or had forgotten that there are two spare blades included in the same "pocket" as the Kum so I learned something valuable today! Mine is black so the gray blades aren't as obvious while hiding in that pocket. It's a great sharpener too.

Two step Kum sharpener in blue. Like the side sharpeners for mechanical pencil leds plus the two reg pencil sharpeners. Awesome!
I fell in love with the brass adjustable sharpener when I saw it in the art store and since it was my birthday, I bought it. I love it so much!
I have a 1950s or 60s version of the desktop sharpener. It was my grandfathers. It’s the best pencil sharpener I ever used.
Warning you ahead of time: I have 2 plastic based KUM two-step automatic pencil sharpeners fail on me from blick (ONE FROM BLACK WING AS WELL). The issue is with the plastic mold tha holds the blades. Due to Germany's energy crisis KUM uses plastic that melts at low temperatures. Thus with medium usage, the plastic the will begin to mold with the pencils preventing the blades from shaving the wood.
@pauljs75
Жыл бұрын
Mine seems to be different. It has a metal block insert molded into the plastic, and the blades attach to that with screws. The only issue is that the plastic casing isn't all that great at containing the shavings as it's too small. Also the flex joint for the clear lid will break at some point over the years. Taping it back on works, but it's kind of meh. The two step sharpening does work great (worth the price in that regard - if not marked up), it's just the enclosure has more style than substance to it's design. Even if it's visually unique and fits the hand well, it has to be emptied after sharpening only one or two pencils which makes it impractical. The bare metal block version (also shown in the video) makes much more sense as it omits the nearly useless outer case. Also not saying you're wrong about the design of the plastic case one. It could be they've gotten cheaper over the years and quality crapped out, as mine was purchased some years ago.

4:34 I had one of these as a kid, but shaped like a train. It's ridiculously good. Was impossible to break the lead accidentally, and it would automatically stop sharpening when it was sharp enough.
the shapa desk sharpener is also good too because you can change the setting to sharp/blunt and it stops sharpening when it's finished and it its super easy to crank.
Just got my new t’gaal sharpener and it’s amazing. Exactly as advertised. Loving all the different settings. Thanks for the recommendation. Cheers.
you know this content is good when i say to myself "id like one of those, i might get one," then i remember that i dont use pencils
The Tgaal is my absolute favorite because I prefer a more stubby tip and I can't think of any pencil sharpeners that offer variable tip angle.
I love the T'gaal! Hard to resist buying more!
The bloopers at the end absolutely got me. So unexpected and hilarious
I'm pleasantly surprised at the price of the Ratchetta with notification!! I'm on the waiting list! Gonna snatch one of those up asap! I don't even care what color, I just neeeeeed one!
I use the Høvel brass sharpening plane. It’s totally worth the price, small, convenient, practical, - black wing obviously think so too 😊

I had one at one time and it was the best. They have these roller blades in them that rotated. These other ones have a single or double blade, although the desk sharpener in this video might be the roller kind. Miss my old school sharpener.
I really like the KUM two step one. I don't use much wooden pencils these days but the 2 step mechanism is great and combined with the lead pointers, it's just so convenient. I don't understand why they have to make 2 different versions though, just make the blue one with the lead pointers, no?

The reason your pencil lead breaks is because when you hit it, drop it, or anything similar, the lead inside fractures. So next time you go to sharpen, it just falls out.
ngl I've been eying the Høvel for a while, I think it would be great for pencils that cant be traditionally sharpened because they are just two soft. I feel too nervous to do it with a knife lol. Also wow I've had a Kum 2 step for years and never realized it had replacement blades.
I never knew such simple items like pencil sharpeners could be so technologically advanced.

The t’gaal is probably the one for you. On setting 1 or 2 the tip is sharp but not long. I have used 2 of them. The downside is that the part that closes over stops working properly fairly quickly ( I just keep it in a small bag). Also, I sharpen a lot of waxy coloured pencils and after about 6 months the pencil tips start breaking. It would be great if you could pull it apart and change the blade. Hope this helps.

I'm an aeronautical engineer student and I always just used the desk sharpener to sharp my pencils before I was doing any work and then just used a thin blade to sharpen it as it gets dull to keep that same line width along the whole schematic
Really ingenious !
I have a very good desk sharpener and I really recommend them, especially for those who work with graphite pencils and need a very sharp point.
I need a T'Gaal but that Racthetta is adorable!
I have a Kum Long Point, both M+R long point sharpeners (brass, one step, I think they're called Pollux and Castor), recently got an Afmat manual desk sharpener, and have an iPoint electric one being delivered as we speak. Nothing beats the Afmat for long points which is why I ordered the iPoint for my more regular tips. The Afmat makes them so long they're uncomfortable for writing.

i have the KUM sharpeners and they work great! but will definitely try the other ones
Im more of a pen guy so idk why this video held my attention for so long lol. When i use a pencil down in my shop for marking wood or whatever I use my dads old 30 year old wall mounted crank sharpener like the ones I used in grade school. Its got a rotating bezel for different pencil sizes and has 2 rotating cutters like a rotary burr or end mill used for metal work. Thing works like a champ still after all these years. I used to have one shaped like a yellow ball with a smiley face on it like the one Walmart used to have in the 90s.
Its pretty common for woodworkers to use planes to sharpen pencils, however they generally don't move the plane relative to the pencil, but keep the plane still, which is much easier and is similar to a real planing technique for shaping really small parts. Which i think would be a better design for this pencil sharpener and perhaps how its intended to be used. Generally in woodworking you keep either the workpiece or the plane still, its really hard to plane when neither are stationary. If you were to use this sharpener i would recommend holding the pencil firm with your nondominant hand at the edge of the table at like a 30º angle and sharpen from there. This is similar to the technique that Japanese woodworkers use when sawing wood with the grain without a vise. The Plane sharpener bares a striking resemblance to a real type of hand plane used by Luthiers (People who make Guitars and Violins). Luthiers use these small planes more as carving tools than jointery and flattening tools like most planes. Luthier planes can be held in your palm like this sharpener, while almost all other planes are held with two hands.

I'm surprised that none of them used subscription system, where if you stopped paying the monthly $3 subscription, the thing just stopped working. And no Wi-fi connection for the company to track your pencil-sharpening activities which would also connect to a phone app which gives you tips on how to perform better pencil-sharpening... which for some reason asked for permission to access your contacts, files, camera, microphone, and permission to reset your phone to factory settings.
