As someone who absolutely cannot do well with traditional fighters no matter how much I practice (motion inputs, even simple ones, are generally beyond my capabilities, and I have trouble with directional blocking), even a rival won't help me there. But, I used to casually play Smash and Pokken, and having a rival was really helpful for all the reasons described here. I really need to get back into it and play with my friends more, build a rivalry again since it's been so long.

ive never had a true rival, i was the only dude growing up that liked fighting games as much as i do so ive been kicking it alone on FGs as a result. i definitely feel the message of the plateau since grinding ranked just doesnt hit the same. Its harder to justify the journey. But on the other end, ive been slowly but surely finding people around me that were willing to pick up fighting games, and even if i am the only one who can really grasp the higher level concepts of play and improvement currently and dont have my own "rival" within this group ive built to grow with, ive at least been able to make sure that everyone ive pulled in has someone to play and i can still help them all grow as a group. and its felt just as rewarding. its really helped me look at it from a different perspective, personally tackling issues many have with getting into the genre, and helping these friends stick with the genre.

This is very true. Back in the arcade days of MvC2 our small group were all rivals. We'd roll up every Friday after school and punch it out till the arcade closed at 10. Eveyone came with new tech, new teams or strats and was just fun improving with one another. Got my longest win streek of 49 one night, just on the cab, the one to beat, from when I got there to close. And they were alway close fight sometimes down to the last two. And this was before the gods had really formed and became the norm. So seeing characters like that girl with the bones or the cactus throw down some sause was grand. Some of them went on to be my gaming buddies long past that and too this day we trade blows but for funzies nowadays.

@@IHeartJusticeSuper miss it. Coming around and seeing the level go up. Wondering who would unlock next. What tech your friends would bring? Would they adopt the new character? Will they learn them on the fly? (Most didn't have the home ports/they weren't out yet so training modes weren't available. Any learning was hands on or visiting shoryuken) How did their team change for synergy? And because the game was evolving no metas had a chance to settle. Saw everyone get experimented with rather then what top level mvc2 is now. I even retired a character in my team (Cyclops tho I would break him out for those that only knew the meta and flowcharted that playstyle) cause he was such a strong anchor for me and we wanted to push ourselves. Lead me to my favorite team of Rogue Hyato Strider and the 5 level dump it has for style. Some of the best months in a game I've ever had.

I found having someone who's newer to a game and who's training, inserting my self into a teacher role helps me because I don't want to spread any misinfo or contribute to someones poor in game habits. Being on top of my shit and learning matieral for this newer person before a meet up. It gets me studying stuff for the newer player and forcing me to explain clearly how a character and the systems works. Having to explain something and actually teach someone well shows a full understanding and when I'm forced to explain something I don't fully understand I just find the answer while playing or at anothet meet up. Apologizing when I gave the wrong impression about XYZ character for this newer player and showing them how to get around XYZ move they think is busted that week.

I’m gonna have to agree with this. I had a high school teacher who I would (and still do) play smash with during lunch. I learned the most by playing during lunch, because I had someone that was learning new strategies with me. I learned when to be aggressive and when to start playing defensive, while he learned to break some habits. I eventually decided (because of your and Lythero’s videos) to pick up DBFZ and recently Marvel. I have multiple reasons why I haven’t grown much on Marvel (mainly PC issues), but I have grown a lot on Dragon Ball. I’ve got a few hundred hours playing by myself, but a lot of my growth was because I have my brother as a rival there.

I have friends who i've played fighterz with for awhile, but it was never rivalry just casual gaming and frustration so I've been joining discord servers to try and find people to play with. The most frustrating part is I can tell just how much I get better at any game when I have someone of a higher skill level I need to keep up with, it's like the goku and vegeta.

It just dawned on me how blessed I am to have the friends I do. We're a group of 5 dudes(although 2 of em have moved out) and only 2 of us are deep into fighting games. But whenever we do come together, we're always duking it out in some fighting game, mostly Tekken but there are days when we wanna play other fighting games as well. Anything will do, MvC, GG, BB, Melty, Skullgirls, The Last Blade, Martial Masters, Blade Aurcus, you name it, we've played it. . The other three of em aren't very good, they do not know how neutral works, how to combo, they mess up doing qcfs half the time. But it's always amazing to watch them play, how they adapt to what's going on in the match and that usually brings some of the most intense rounds I have ever witnessed in my life. The other guy, however(the one besides me who is also into fighting games), never fails to keep me on my toes. We randomly met way back in 2016 in the school hallway and opened our conversation with KoF, and the rest is history. It's always a blast to play against him, I get to pick up a lotta knowledge whenever we fight. Playing sets, adapting to his habits and then talking about everything after feels liberating somehow. "Bro, just sideroll Kunimitsu's ff2. What are you laying there for?" "You should NOT have told me that." Me, playing Morrigan, trying to soul fist spam him as his Haggar slowly approaches trying to pipe my girl instills some heavy anxiety into my brain. I treasure these little moments in the group dearly, and while we're not the best at this, it's easy to see that everyone wants to beat the other and I love that. With that being said, great job on the video, man. I can see that a buncha people really connect with this video just like I did and it will certainly connect to more in the future.

Hard agree with all of this. I didn't know how much a rival motivated me until I looked around and I no longer had one. Used to be my brother, we would do at least 10 matches of Tekken 7 whenever he had time or was around, but more and more he got on with his life while I was content with mine. He moved out, getting married this year, more active in activity planning and his job, and there's just not that same bond between us. We still get on great, but Tekken isn't much of the factor anymore, and I lost my one regular person to throw hands with. Nowadays I just do ranked in games, or try and work up the courage to ask my online friends, but it just ain't the same...

It's hard to think about rivals since I'm usually a menace to so many in FighterZ and I go up against people who have gotten top 100 at evo for said game; but I wouldn't consider them rivals since they're so nice and we just play. There is a few that come to mind, but one man named Rose' stands out among them. He was the one to push me to go to the lab and learn combos, the one who keeps up with FighterZ as much as I, the one who's grown with me the entire way, even learning my habits and silently coaching me through the punishment; as long as I can remember, I've wanted to beat Rose'. After a while we finally started having more even matches and during rollback we experienced a situation of trying to take the other's square with neither of us budging; even when he would win 3 games in a row, I'd win the next 3. I have gotten a pretty good track record as of late with me winning most of our games (and even taking his square) but I'm expecting some push back. Cause I know that man won't just quit, I'm hoping he won't, he's gonna learn my nonsense and win back all those games; I can feel it.

I decided to part ways with a lifelong friend of 15 years late 2022. We shared a lot of interests together and that was VERY apparent in the games we played. He was my Smash Bros rival since the Wii U version and we went to tourneys together… usually to get bopped by the really REALLY good players lmfao. We would spend the night at each other’s house and run matches until 5AM sometimes. When our Friendship ended, I noticed my passion to improve diminished. The hours that I spent in the lab practicing various tech became more and more infrequent. Nowadays I usually dust off my controller if there’s a set up at a social gathering. I really resonated with everything you said in this video Javi! Even though I was an intermediate player (depending on who you ask), I can definitely attest to the benefits of having a rival! Looking forward to the vid :)

This is honestly true; I only got good with For Honor after constantly doing duels with someone who was in the top 1% of players for a while. While I'm not a super competitive or high-tier player, I am more than capable of giving even some of the best of the best a hard time getting their dubs, so my skills are nothing to snuff at.

Having a rival was what allowed me to win a MVC2 tourney between my friends. For context, my friend found the game for cheap for the PS2, which he had, so whenever we had the chance we played. Everyone else chose characters that seemed like they were busted or, since a few people had UMvC3, were equivalent to teams that they knew, resulting in everyone but me having high tier characters, with me using a team composed of Felicia, Ryu, and Cyclops. Naturally, I had a hard time winning, but upon the announcement of a friendly tourney, which in the end had a few prizes, I ended up starting to view everyone as a rival, which made my gameplay go from simple 4-hit combos to stringing together combos that dealt pretty good damage considering the characters had low compatibility with some of the assists (although the triple full screen Hyper Combo was stupid in everyone else’s eyes but beautiful in mine), and this rapid improvement made me the favorite and inevitable winner of the tourney, which just goes to show that rivals truly do allow for better improvement with fighting games. And yes, one of them did have Sentinel as an anchor, and yes, I did have to time him out.

I’ve been looking for a rival for months and knew i needed one, cuz to be frank i SUCK at fgs, but unfortunately it’s not easy to find one when you also suck at being a person. I can’t just ask someone “want to be my rival?” after playing a few games, and everyone else around me is just so beyond my skill level to even consider asking that in the first place. If you’ve got someone, cherish them, because not everyone can find someone

Amongst my friends I’m unquestionably top dog, despite that my buddy David never gives up never backs down. He has dropped my win rate against him from like 80% to 60%. I’m happy to consider myself a rival to all my friends because while they don’t all pose a challenge to me currently I see them improving I see them learning. Another friend Ale is quickly reaching the point to match what David has done against me as well. Fighting games are best enjoyed when you are learning and breaking down ever fight, every punch, every move. Side note we are all quite trash on ladder and none of us are competitive players. I know I sound prideful. But the top won’t be lonely much longer I can promise that.

I don't know if he really considers me a rival but I definitely do. I have a friend that I met in a melty blood server where one day I asked about Tekken cause I got it on sale and it turned out he played it and is quite good at it. So we started playing together and he showed me the ropes and now a less than half a year later I'm somewhat consistently taking rounds and games when before I could barely touch him. Playing with someone I can consider a rival of sorts has allowed me to improve way more than if I tried only improving by playing ranked mode. I was hardstuck low bronze in SF6 but after playing with him in private match a couple times he showed me some things I didn't even think to try improving on and now I'm middle to high silver. maybe not the most improvements to some but for me that was amazing seeing how much better I've gotten in such a short span of time. And I can thank my friend for that :)

I remember, my sister had a friend, and he was the only guy I could find to play CvS2 with. I could never beat him, but all our matches were close, usually coming down to pixel health. I knew I was getting better just playing him. Though the guy eventually stopped coming over, I never took that experience for granted. It was the best time I've ever had playing fighting games. Also CvS2 is the best Fighting game ever, don't @ me. For the curious, my team was Sagat, Vice, and Yuri using the basic Capcom style super bar (the only style that allowed air blocking).

I've told him on multiple occasions I'm glad to have him there, because without someone to be there with me I wouldn't still be learning fgs. We both start a new fighting game together and as you can imagine we end up being at a similar level of skill throughout our sessions, improving more by playing other people. When my family and friends say they don't want to get into fighting games because they're too difficult i wish they did have a rival to try new tech on or a new combo or beating down their bad habits. But like I said, i do feel lucky in that regard. I kinda doubt i would have loved fighting games as much as I do if i didn't have a rival to share the experience with

Became more acquainted with him, adapted, improved. Fast-forward, I get into more fighting games and we really pop off on our fights. He is often a lot more skillful than me, but I always give him a run for his money the more we fight. He is a rival and a friend that I truly cherish. Got humbled and started in iron and slowly rose to platinum. Then I met this guy named DevilMayCry on NA 4. He was a plat Ryu. We've hung out and had huge sets around the 30 match mark. He's slowly learning when to contest armor and Im getting around projectiles and reversals (I dont play characters with invincible reversals). One day he said he didn't want to do ranked because of a lost streak and I pushed him to keep going. Now we both have a secondary that's also plat (he has ken, I have zangief) and we just had another close set I think it was 17-14 but man are those games fun

Incoming wall of text, but I actually do have a rival: my younger brother. We've been competing in video games since we've been able to hold controllers. While I tend to have more experience and knowledge, we're about even in skill and are still amateurs at best in everything we play. We've competed a lot in games like Smash Bros, Pokémon (even if it's not a fighting game, the same philosophy still applies) and Pokkén Tournament. We've always done simpler games like those because he couldn't fully grasp motion inputs like hado, tatsu, dp, etc., but he's not a total stranger to them as we've played other fighting games like Street Fighter 2 on the SNES mini and Dragon Ball Fighters, to name a couple. Recently, though, he decided he wanted to learn MvC3 (vanilla not ultimate, so I can't school him using Virgil :p /j), so we've been playing a lot of Marvel 3. He's learning the basics fast, and despite all the light smack I talk with him, I'm happy that he's learning games like this because it motivates me to improve as well, plus it's always fun to have someone close to you who you can play with and talk to about games like these.

I’ve had some rivals and it definitely made me a better fighter because of it, great vid. Low key, I wonder if Javi played DOA, cause that would be another rival 😂

I love UMVC3 but i got no rival nor one to play rip i loved playing (trying) phoenix wright, and zero (i personally find them working) well I found phoenix wright can work with chun-li and morrigan (imo) for some reason i can manage some air combos with all of them but i can never adapt to him and i need a rival. But by watching lythero and IHJ and the crew makes me want to go back to playing and actually try and git gud. Love the videos keep it up!

Im not sure how my friend sees it, but he is by far my biggest rival. He labs far more than I do and put ways more effort into getting better, but I always still come back to face him. He pushes me to get better and I appreciate it. He doesnt like it when I decide to keep facing him even when Im clearly not very happy or doing great, but I always end up learning something or improving from it. His skill has pushed me more than any amount of labbing really could, and Im thankful he puts up with my shit.
