Why you hate Adobe - A sophisticated rant

A video long overdue: what most of us designers think but not many take the time to express. A loose list of bugs, complaints, and weird stuff we grew accustomed to experience from our beloved softwares. Also, in many ways, a cry for help. FIX THESE.

I just came from the newest update of premiere pro were they changed the way you Import and export media after over 10 years of using the legacy way, so I typed in the search bar "the problem with adobe" to find any ranting for someone who hates adobe as much as I do, while still having to use it despite all of that, so I'm grateful that I found your video because it gave me some relief. thank you.

They also completely ruined media encoder. It no longer remembers the compressor setting or the last path of the last video you exported. You now have to do this every single time even if you are exporting to the same folder and using the same encoding settings.

I’ve really gotten to loathe anything Adobe does these days. Not just from everything you mentioned here, but because all of their software just runs horribly. It’s all gotten so bloated and crashes all the time. I actually switched to DaVinci Resolve because it’s so much more stable and runs so well. After Effects is basically the only Adobe software I still find to be pretty solid.

Thank you!! Adobe makes up 99.9% of my frustrations as a designer and it has def limited my growth since it’s the “industry standard.” It makes absolutely no sense for an expensive product made for designers to have horrible UX and UI. It’s terrible for the average person and especially for folks with learning disabilities. They basically said F u to accessibility.

And not to mention. Why isn't photoshop and illustrator easy to use together. A graphic designer needs to use adjustments layers on images too while working on vectors, but there is no elegant way to transfer files from one program to the other. Affinity can do this sooo much more smoothly.

That's why I switched professional to Affinity. All 3 Programms feel exactly the same, even the iPad Apps. I still have and Creative Cloud sub for Lightroom and occasional I start photoshop, get frustrated that you cant select Objekts and close it immediately. Back in the 00 no serious Designer used Photoshop for Webdesign, we were using a Programm called Macromedia Fireworks. Adobe bought the company and made a bloody mess out of it until of course it got cancel.

I 100% agree with you. After 7 years of working in the field, I still need to google basic things at times. It's quite frustrating how many inconsistencies there are between their softwares. Drives me absolutely nuts! And I kind of feel forced to keep using the Adobe suite because of the wide range of software I need. I do think I'll be switching to Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo and Figma (at the very least).

Other issues with their changing of SHIFT behaviour in PS (as well as changing the crop tool): as a teacher, this creates a real headache, as when teaching a course on a totally different topic, with more than enough to be getting on with, you now have to do a bloody digression about how to fix all the old tools that are now acting differently. You have no way of knowing if a student is using CS6 (as I still do), or CC of whatever damned year they're on, with different versions of the program now having different tool behaviour. I"ve mentioned this on other movies on YT, but even worse that all the annoying stuff in this vid is the bugs - in my case (and a small but non-trivial % of users) the ~2021 update NUKED not just my latest version of PS, but the previous ones I also had installed. I don't know what crap they had in that update, but PS crashed every time I tried to open an image. We had a thread on their forum begging them to fix the bug, it went on for months. Many of us had pretty high end GPUs and systems, there was no rhyme or reason why the update failed to detect them, or acting crappy if it did. Adobe just continued to cash our subs and told us to "reset your prefs" or "switch it off and switch it on again", or some equivalent display of contempt. Anyway, I canceled, saved myself 700 bucks a year. They can rot. I recommend that anyone who really needs their apps to try (if they can) to procure the cs6 suite if they can find an old copy, kiss goodbye to their cloud, as it only rains piss.

Affinity also did the feature better. It has the option to constrain based on what kind of layer it is (images constrain by default, vectors don't, etc.), constrain everything by default, or not constrain whatsoever. They also gave it a nice little menu in Preferences for customising your workflow and works exactly the same in Publisher, Photo, and Designer. Meanwhile Adobe just slapped a "Use Legacy Free Transform" checkbox in Photoshop, as if not constraining by default is somehow considered outdated when it is just that, a preference.

Adobe's Photoshop is a pinnacle of their quality. When you're using Premiere for longer projects than 5 minutes and/or with FullHD or 2k footage, than you really want to burn in hell rather than working in such conditions. I mean, if you have any graphic card that isn't labeled with RTX than you will have probably 10+ crash reports per project. It's really astonishing how this corporation can't handle their software. I REALLY hope there will be some heavy competition in near future for adobe to realize that they're very efficiently destroying their own software.

  • @brenschaefer
    @brenschaefer2 жыл бұрын

Nitpicking nitpicks: directional blur shouldn’t be called motion blur in after effects. In the context of video, they’re very much distinct. AE has its own frame interpolation/velocity pass based motion blur. I guess they had to differentiate but didn’t want to screw up the naming that people were used to solely for the sake of consistency. It really just shouldn’t be called motion blur in photoshop to begin with, but I suppose it could be used that way with some compositing trickery. I’m not trying to defend Adobe, I’ve largely abandoned their software entirely aside from photoshop (just haven’t felt like relearning everything to use affinity). In the context of just about every software they offer, there is a far better, more lightweight, more detailed, and cheaper/open source alternative. They’ve pulled an autodesk, gone fully corporate and are bogged down by keeping modularity and compatibility paramount, constrained by the need to keep old/dated features. And their somewhat recent marketing push towards obtaining a wider demographic and capitalizing on social media “creators,” leads to over-simplification that feels almost flat-out patronizing to me. Things like removing the jpg quality slider with “good, poor, very good,” - that doesn’t help when I want to get the maximum quality for an upload with a 20mb file size limit… then there’s of course instances like premiere mobile, where you get a choice of aspect ratios, like 16:9, and 1:1. It’s not hard to implement a way to use a custom aspect. *Delete*. Don’t even get me started on their attempt at “3D software” in a world where blender and Houdini apprentice can be had for free. I’m about at my limit as far as putting up with this company goes. There’s absolutely no reason that editing a couple .tiff files should generate 20+gb of cache/temp files. It’s absurd. Since abandoning their software, I’ve had far less issues and stress.

I couldn't agree more. The disrespect and invasiveness of the Adobe CC suite, which tracks my every web movement online, because I am forced to stay signed in, violates my privacy, too. It is beyond these idiotic UX redesigns, and this bloated, corporate designed software, that disregards the needs of its primary users - designers. Moreover, with the redesign of each application, they add more and more unnecessary plug ins and 'special effects', that if you understand the software, can do in minutes, while changing tools in each application.

try changing clip speed with the R tool in Premiere. It will always ad a frame in the beginning of the file. It's been this way since CS6 for sure, maybe longer. Try unlinking audio from video, then moving the audio file in milliseconds and then linking them back... The software is crap, that's the truth. Sadly too many people share Pr or AE projects and you have to keep up the workflow. They know it, so for 800 euros you get new icons and more bugs. And of course the best - task manager during rendering. How i love my gpu to be at 2% and the cpu at 30!

Adobe doesn't need to make improvements to their software, they just need to make changes, good or bad, to justify their subscription fee. Because you have to pay monthly to use their software and can not just buy it, you are locked in to paying forever if you think you will ever need to use it again. Even if you change to a new program. I pretty much don't use anything past 2018, but still have to pay the subscription to be able to use it. If I hate every single change the have made to the next version, I can not vote with my wallet by skipping that version. This means adobe doesn't have to worry about what I think about their changes, because even if I only use the 2014 versions of everything, I still have to pay. I am stuck with adobe, unless I pirate it, which I just might start doing. The only thing Adobe has done is insured I will NEVER buy in to another subscription service again.

Brilliant, thank you! Lets not forget this little nugget as well: Photoshop (save as...) issue where people use to years of workflow flattening art and saving a copy to overwrite a jpeg linked in InDesign let's say. PS was instead saving a new file tagged as "_copy" so you would have to relink in InDesign or delete the main file and rename the copy to retain cross app linking. Adobe's support answer to this was, "use export it's a better way". Export is easier, true, but was also keeping the old way people have been using for 20 years that much of an impossibility!? Do developers at Adobe actually use Adobe software... how would they not know these things!?

That's exactly right. For some reason they don't seem to notice stuff like this. It feels like they have a broader problem with naming in general. The "export for screens" function in AI is a good example: it tacks the number of the artboard at the end of the file name without even telling you and that forces you to go to your folder and rename each file, taking out that suffix every time.

These are not huge changes, but they’re all annoying details that do add up when you work on this stuff all day long, and the more time passes the more these things are going to be decisive when people pick their software of choice. They won’t be neglectable if and when Adobe loses its monopoly.

I honestly think Adobe CC is laughing at us, with each worthless iteration, and unnecessary changes, as it raises its very high user licence fees yearly. Another point in fact- I lost years of Premiere Pro work in timelines because a new version of software reached in and corrupted my timelines by 'updating them', so that they cannot be opened, and the latest version of Premiere Pro CC cannot render with Media Encoder, and I cannot work with someone else on my projects.

Don't forget the one that makes me wanna kill: why on earth do they have to hide essential left toolbar options in a dropdown menu when there's a lot of empty gray space available below? And the monochrome microscopic icons. Seriously. I hate this trend. It makes me think that is not a coincidence how confusing and de-humanizing all todays interfaces are. It looks that things are done this way to make people be in a permanent state of angriness and anxiety on purpose. Look at how todays UI experience in general sucks: the cookie disclaimers and all dumb browsers not remembering that i set my preferences on this a day ago: The accidentally pushed OS integrated news popups i am not interested on. The crappy new google images search sucks. The tons of empty spaces. The 1-millimeter thick invisible sliders. The program installation and subscription insufferable rituals. The total dependence on the Internet to make licenses work. The tons of popups on upgrades and shit you don't need. The eternal ask for permissions on things that you been doing since always. We all have now 80' sized screens. Why the hell won't we return to big-colourful understandable icons and sliders, well organized spaces and used with logic, center focused on user creative freedom an enjoyment?

THANK YOU for sharing my hatred of MONOCHROME ICONS. Christ, I can't tell you how much anger it creates in me when my brain has to interact with their toolbar, and 7 of the icons all have the same shape. If only my computer could support a palette of millions of colours, and could give me the option of colour icons, to help differentiate their functions. Oh well.

With the new Adobe AI there are even more reasons to hate Adobe. It's so much censored that it is a more pleasurable experience to avoid it than to use it. The fact itself that they tought of pre-emptively censoring the work of their users, who are mainly in graphics and creative fields, says it all about Adobe.

Creative Cloud is EXTREMELY unoptimized to the point that it is nearly hilarious. I can open ANY program on a computer faster than Creative Cloud. In addition, there are various alternative (i.e. mostly better) programs that you can use aside from Adobe. Adobe is trying to have a monopoly on software, which is actually illegal in the United States (or I think it still is) to have a monopoly that negatively impacts economic growth and diversity.

@@YSMALXD I've been reading the reviews of them on Trustpilot - good god, it's worse than I thought. This isn't just a matter of a crappy company; I think at this point they should be investigated, as their alleged behaviour (falsely charging people for canceled subs to name but one) is I think, criminal. At least it merits investigation. I canceled my sub for the PS/lightroom account (I needed it for a job) and they stuck me with a $16 cancelation, but I see that some people are getting stuck for $250, and others not being able to cancel at all. Along with RIGHT TO REPAIR laws, we need a RIGHT TO CANCEL. Cancel option should not be buried 10 layers deep in a D&D quest format, and it should be foolproof. Looking at you, SKYPE.

+1 on CS6 Photoshop. Seriously people, pick one up if you can. Will try DVR at some point. I'm basically trying to move away from the Windows/Cloud/Sub BS model over the next couple years. Got Linux MINT (mate) on a very old laptop, and once all my apps are on it, it's amazing. Would never have thought a Dell Inspiron 1720 (from 2007!) would still be usable. Sure some stuff it can't (DaVinci Resolve, forget it), but it runs Krita find, Audacity, Libre Office, Openshot video editing!; I can watch YT vids on it, etc. - I'm looking at grabbing a less ancient laptop (Thinkpad, 2010 - 2012 window) they can be found cheap, and see if I can do a bit more with it. Slowly want to migrate as best I can off the bloodsuckers and into Free/OS/own (e.g., Affinity). I think the time has come to see these people for the exploitative rentiers that they are.

Easy answer to your topics: All the inconsistencies are the result of history and millions of users have stored them in muscle memory. Each time Adobe tried to change them, they earned a massive shit storm. So Adobe kept them as hurdle that newbies have to pass to work with the most capable tool chain in the world. And exactly these particularities make it so hard for the expert every day users to change to alternatives like the Affinity tools.
