ABOUT THIS VIDEO
Hey! This is a new video about why you struggle to understand native English speakers. I already made a similar video on this topic, and you can watch it here: • Listening Skills | Why...
However, in this video we discuss several new topics.. for example, maybe you don't understand native English speakers because the people you speak with have REALLY bad speaking habits. Maybe they mumble, don't enunciate, and speak too quietly! All of these things will interfere with clear communication.
Another reason you may struggle to understand native English speakers is because sometimes people don't explain things in a logical manner. Or maybe they use idioms that you're not familiar with.
There are so many reasons you may not understand native English speakers, but most of the time it's not your fault (especially if you understand me!).
Once you realize that you're not too blame, you will have more confidence when speaking with others. You won't be afraid to ask someone to speak up, clarify what they mean, or even start over.
Also, keep in mind that people speak differently all over the world. You may be unfamiliar with different accents, regional vocabulary, or slang terms. This is OK! As long as you aren't afraid to ask someone to repeat what they say (or say it a different way), you'll be fine.
Anyhow... I hope this video was helpful! If you can think of any other reasons why it might be difficult to understand native English speakers, feel free to list them in the comments.
See you in the next video! :D
PS. "I've been taking the piss out of myself recently." means "I've been making fun of myself recently." I never would have guessed... 👀🙅🏼‍♀️😅 idioms are so crazy!!

For non-native English speaker like me, the main reason why it's difficult to understand native English speakers is because we have little to no practice of conversational english. Our learning is mostly thru classroom lectures and reading. And conversational english feels like a totally different dimension. And also, you're not alone in terms of zoning out lol. My brain also does that to me when the information it receives are overwhelming.

@@haha-eg8fj I feel it's mostly the fact that actors in movies often mumble and drop every unstressed syllable, whereas Stefanie doesn't do that, she enounces everything she says, as an anchorwoman would do. Assuming you actually know the words and (at least most of) the idioms that are being used, if you weren't exposed to real life conversation long enough, you'll still have a hard time at understanding. Nowadays movies are not theatrical, they are realistic. In real life you often say the same things in the same phrasing over and over again, so you naturally shorten it whenever it's possible to save time and effort, to the point when you don't actually say a thing, it's just a mumbling sound. But since your relatives / friends / neighbours / colleagues are used to that, they recognize that sound as something they're familiar with, and associate it to the real sentence. That's why they understand and we (foreigners) don't. This is true for every language and in every country, I guess.

Totally agreed. English is my second language. If people are speaking in English on a topic that I really have no interests, I will lost myself in this conversation. Another example is: when two groups of people are talking around me, one group speaking English, the other one speaking Chinese. I all the time tend to get more information from that Chinese group talking - that is my mother tongue.

It's so great to listen to someone who speaks English as you do. I wish I had all the resources we do nowadays. When I lived in the US 30 years ago, there was not the internet. In order to learn a new word, I had to ask someone who knew that word to help me with the pronunciation. I was really lucky because I met some helpful people at work. But they weren't available whenever I needed them. Thanks so much for the amazing job you do helping so many people in improving their English. I hope that all the benefits you are giving to us life compensates you. Thanks, Stefanie.

I very often feel stressed about understanding native people, mostly because of bad communication habits of them. Unfortunetly, we end up frustrated, but from know on i'll be more confident about my skills and make the most of this lessons!
