Awesome.!! I'm finding now, maybe I wasted a lot of time trying other ways which don't improve my listening and speaking skills.

If you don't understand TV shows in english is because have been turning on the subtitles! Turn the subtitles off, see the chapter/movie, you didn't understand something? Watch it again, pay attention to what you are listening, watch the lips of the person that is speaking... didn't understand something? watch again!

She just speaks very clear and articulated...If you watch series "Walking Dead" - you will not understand even 50 % of they speach.., despite dialogs in this series are much more simple in terms of words and grammer constructions than language of this coach...

Don't worry I was born in America English is my primary language and I still don't have the best vocabulary spelling penmanship or grammar... And unfortunately I'm having major difficulty learning Spanish. And not only do I have to learn Spanish but it's for Argentina so it's even more of a complicated dialect than just Mexico or something. I can understand probably at least 200 words in Spanish but only about 15 or 20 words in Argentina Spanish. it has a very different accent. I'm really scared and worried that I'm not going to learn the Argentinian Spanish by the time I have to go there.

I did the following steps in order, but I kept doing the initial steps even when I advanced to the higher ones. I hope they will help. 1. Listen to Native speakers Anywhere you can. Your language teacher may or may not be a native speaker, and might be speaking to you with an accent if they are not natives, or speaking slower or differently just to help you learn! In order to listen to native speakers, I suggest two places. One of them is listening to the radio, where the radio jockeys speak super fast. The second is a real person, face to face. The key to learning how to listen is to start slow. Begin by trying to recognize in the radio jockey's fast talk, those words that you have learned in your class. In the beginning, you will be able to recognize only one or two words, but that is fine. Eventually as you expand you vocabulary and grammar in the classroom, you will begin to identify more and more words and sentences that the RJ uses. You'll notice slang and will be able to ask your teacher about it. Just like the radio, pay attention when you are in a public space and use the same technique. Start by identifying words that you know, and then move up to sentences. When you speak one on one with a person, don't hesitate to ask them to speak to you slowly! Again, try to identity the words and sentences that you know. Eventually, you will pick up everything the person in front of you says to you. People are generally helpful, they will oblige when you ask them to speak slowly, and they see that you are making an effort. Eventually you will be able to remember certain words that you don't know yet, and will be able to ask your teacher about them. 2. Next, listen to minute details, notice how each word is pronounced by a native speaker. Observe how the parts of their face move when they speak. Try to pronounce the words that you know in the way they do. Do it in front of a mirror, look at how the parts of your face move when you say a word the way they do. Listen to your voice. Does it sound right? 3. Progress to the TV screen. Start with cartoons! Then move to movies and series. Cartoons generally use simpler and clearer words. Movies and series are more about acting than language. That is why you can pick up the language from movies and series more easily once you are used to picking up the language in person, on the radio and in cartoons. Don't watch dubbed media! If you are learning Russian, watch a cartoon that is originally in Russian. An English cartoon that has been dubbed in Russian will not teach you correctly. When you reach the level where you can understand most of what is said in the series, don't stop doing the other steps. Each of them has a different lesson to teach, the more variety of native speakers you listen to, the better you train your mind at recognizing, and then using the language properly. 4. Most importantly, put into practice - which means talk to people - whatever you learned by using all the above: every single day. Practice with your classmate, your teacher, practice with natives, practice with anyone you can - even if it is in the form of a daily conversation. The proof of these methods? I used them to learn Russian language. It took me like 3 years to speak it well. Just like in the video, I'll narrate a short story. I needed to get my internet connection upgraded, so I made a phone call in advance to go to their office at a free time. When I went there, the officiant was surprised, she gave me one of the best compliments - "You spoke exactly like a Russian man over the phone, I was not expecting you to be a foreigner." I kept applying these for all of the 7 years that I was in Russia. Never had a problem speaking or understanding. I am sure this can apply to English, or to any language that you wish to learn. 5. Learn to think in the language that you are learning. Most people think in their own language, translate it in their minds and try to speak. This is the root of grammatical mistakes. Think and speak directly in the language you need. You will be a better learner in every way.

My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. I really agree with you. I can understand everything that you're talking about but it's so hard to understand TV shows without subtitles. But I've made a decision that all my videos on KZread/Netflix should be in English, always in English. I can feel the difference in a few weeks. Hi Stephanie! I'm a native Spanish speaker and I've studied English all my life! I'm an English teacher in Argentina and after graduated at university I wasn't as fluent as I expected. I could master that extremely tough hability on my own, without teachers, listening and listening and listening english all the time. I proposed to myself that I would sorround by English all day. I strongly believe that the most importat thing is finding something you love doing, something you could do for hours and hours, and then you have to do that in English. You need to be patient but constant and after some time (it depends on each person) you'll come up with your fluency.

Sometimes it also helps if you have no other choice BUT to learn. When I was a teenager, the only mangas I could read on my phone (for free) were all in English and that's how I spent hours learning involuntarily X)

As a turkish person, American accent sounds clearer then british accent for me. For instance this is my first time in your channel and I got almost everything in your speech. Also admired your speaking way. So clear and understandable! Probably I will keep learning with you, see you later!

When I listen to you and try to analyse why I understand you well, I think you put effort into clarity with no slang, no mumbling and you don’t use a lot of phrasal verbs, expressions that I might not get as a non-native English speaker. Thanks for the video btw.

My listening was improving, when I started listening english while I was sleeping, I know it may sound like a magical solution but that really helped with my listening skills, and I also recommend to watch stand up comedy and if you dont understand there are many videos with english subtitles watch them many times and repeat the phrases in your mind while you are watching without speaking, that way you start thinking in English.

Hi Stefanie, thank you for this great explanation on how to master English language! I just started getting involved in conversation with native English speakers and I had to realize I really struggle to understand what they are talking about in the MS Teams session. Listening to you was so easy! I learned English at school and used my skills during my daily business for years now - but that had only been in reading and writing! I was also listening to songs - yes, but I understood only a few lines only by listening. A few months ago I decided to enforce listening to native English speakers and started watching CNN and YT videos, listen to songs and studying the lyrics. Now I stumbled on this video and you convince me, that I have chosen to follow the right path and you give me confidence, that it will take some time but it will be possible to make it. Thank you!!! Now I even will enforce it more to get familiar with daily conversation. The only thing I currently lack is an idea of how to practice my speaking skills. The best I can do is to start singing my favorite songs - at least that goes along with my desire to also improve my vocal skills. Do you have any other tips for practicing? Bests, Mike.

I think you nailed it when you talked about familiarity. When you know about a language intellectually you still have to apply it to the experience and with that, you'll get more proficient in terms of answering, questioning, thinking-talking and not-thinking-talking. Also, familiarity applies to the TV, series and movies we watch (and videos of course). I realised that when I was watching these I didn't understand that much sometimes, and the answer for that is that the actors (movies) aren't speaking in the same context as you do in your videos because well, you are without any other sound and you also speak fine and in a good speed, not so actors, that will talk with the sounds of the movies mixed in and perhaps what sort of slang and idioms too.

English is perfect! I really love watching and reading everything in English, even though I don't know every single word, but as you said, we have to expose ourselves to English every single day at any time so we will be able to understand at least 95% of what we listen or read. I can even say that I'm familiar with the British accent because I love it, the way they say some words it's just incredible. I know no one will read this, but I had a long time without writing a paragraph in English, I like expressing myself this way, but I still have problems with my speaking skills, I have problems I do NOT usually have when writing because where I studied English in high school, they focus more in grammar, listening and comprehension and reading skills. Now I'm studying at a different place in order to get a job at a call center. I'm really good at talking right now, but I must improve the way I express with my body language and a little bit more in ups and downs. Thank you for reading. Salu2

@@susancardona7461 I actually got a job in a call center but not as I wished when I shared this comment xd but same tip as I've heard from my coworkers and friends and that I've applied several times, don't get nervous, noone understands at the beginning, just relax, try to get key words from customers, if not sure, ask nicely so customers do not feel like you didn't hear them but say something like the connection was bad (la vieja confiable xD), you said this but could you repeat last thing you said? Similar frases can be used. I don't even want to read what I wrote, I feel ashamed jajaaj, same feeling when you realize how much you've changed when reading or seeing old stuff from yourself which makes you feel awkward. Hope my tip can work for you :D.

I think a lot of people get frustrated bc they want to see results quickly, and most of the time forget to focus on the general idea, like me when i was learning how to play guitar i couldn't play my favorites songs, so every day i was frustrated and complaining that i couldn't learn anything, but as time went on you better and better and today i can play my favorites songs without any difficulties, sometimes you just need to take your time and be patient with yourself, btw excellent video!!

I've been learning English for about 4 years now. And for the last couple of years I've felt as if I faced a wall and stopped getting better at it. I suppose that if I could compare how I was speaking then with my current abilities, I wouldn't really notice a big difference. I still sound unnatural most of the time because my native language isn't English, I still make mistakes just like I did 2 years ago. And when it comes to listening comprehension and speaking, it's even worse. Though I've watched a lot movies and videos and listened to as many native speakers as I could, I sometimes still don't understand some words they say. For example, I can't even imagine how to tell words like "call", "coal", "cold", "cull", etc from each other. In a fast and fluent speech they all sound similar to me, especially when they are connected with following words in a sentence, though I know that vowels are different but only distinguishable when they are pronounced slowly. I've also been struggling to learn to speak English without my native accent. I've spent hundreds of hours practicing, reading books out loud, working on my articulation, etc. And when I get a native speaker to listen to my recording they usually say that they could tell it was read by a non-native speaker. Well, getting rid of my native accent is my dream though a lot of people say it's impossible to do so if when you started learning you were above the threshold of years of age, which is about 10 - 15 years of age. What is this called if not the "stopping the progress"? I'm very motivated to continue to learn, that's why I'll never give up. But I assume there are people who are not so motivated and may easily drop it out once they notice the progress is no longer being made.

TheMostFacts Why do you focus on your accent so much? It's the least thing I'd worry about. Vocabulary, that's what matters. When I had to step up my English from high-school level because it became relevant at work, I started reading books, looking up the odd word here and there. Imitating native speakers regarding pronounciation and sentence building came much more easy to me when I didn't have to struggle with actually finding the words any more. Some years back I had a supervisor who spoke English with a pretty thick German accent. But usually he was the most sophisticated English speaker in a room in terms of how he structured his sentences and precision of expression, even when there were native speakers present. That was the point when I stopped caring about my accent altogether. I know there are still some very typically German mistakes I make, but why bother? I rather invest my efforts into looking up words when reading books. That makes me better every single time I do it.

Is just amazing how good I'm able to understand every single word you say, the right teacher.

I started understand native speakers only half a year ago. I have been learning English for 2 years. And you know it is not so easy as someone may think. It is really difficult way and it contains lots of practice( listen to foreign music with lurics, read books, listen to English teachers, speak with someone at least twice a week, and to learn English grammar and pronunciation. This is my way of learning English. At present i have B1 level and i am proud of my achievement. My secret is motivation and vision of my future with English language. 2-3 hours per day.

1) I listened a lot with no care of understanding because one cannot repeat after natives properly if one cannot differ sounds of their speech. 2) I found people (not natives) to speak to so I was able to practice speaking English. 3) That's all you need to be great in speaking any language :)

Excellent explanation! The main way to improve listening skills is exactly how you put it. Something that also helps a lot is to study pronunciation, learn about the phonems, the weak and strong forms of certain words and the speech processes.

It seems I understand 95% of what you are saying. This encourage me to move on. Thanks.

You're such an amazing coach. Actually, I had watched this video before, maybe like one year ago and today I've watched it one more time just too see if there is any advice that I forgot to follow. And you're sooo right: There is no magic solution unlike what some people think. I mean, yeah, I still have some trouble understanding English movies like one hundred percent But I've really improved my listening and understanding in English a lot by exposing myself to the real English that native speakers use and watching videos like this over the years. I have learned a lot from this video, smth like facial expression, eye contact and enough and clear voice are required while speaking. You did a great job as always, Thanks.

I've been studying english over the past 6 years, and I noticed that the more exposure to the language/culture you have, the more you'll be able to get the benefits from it. It's not an easy job, but it gets easier if you do it the right way. Internet has shown its power to help us find a great variety of content in english, so look for something that you are interested in and dig through it. News, sports, movies, books, daily vlogs, are great. For busy (and regular) people I would highly recommend listening to podcasts while doing other stuff that do not require much attention from you. There are great contents about many different things you might like. This way, you would not only learn english, but you also would learn something else, improving your productivity. And most importantly: You have to have fun while learning, because it's a long road and you have to enjoy every part of it. The learning process never stops. Think about it as a fuel tank: you don't fill the tank only once in a life time. As time goes by, you keep adding fuel, and you keep on going until you reach your destination. :D

I am from Brazil and I learnt Spanish and English at same year and getting fluent from 2017 up to 2019, now I am in a new battle hahaha I have some British accent(RP), I was trying to improve this accent, but in this accent they don´t have a lot of contents. Now I am trying to return to American accent, but I always end up mixing the accents, but a colleague of mine said this accent is easier. all of the contents I am aware of... are American.If i visit UK speaking in american accent they will understand me and I know the differences about the vocabularies, the only things need are, stuying diligently and havde conversations with qualified tutors. That guy you were talking about he's literally me. I remember myself googling over and over again "how to understand fast speech, how to increase my vocab..." but the only solution here is a lot of practice and patience. You guys don't need to waste your time searching the internet the same things like i did. This is obvious but i realized it just now. Pretty hard to accept it but thanks a lot you Stephanie!

Yes, exactly. There is no secret... it's just a lot of practice, exposure and patience!!!

I can confirm what she said, it takes years to actually get good hearing. But be careful with subtitles, or you'll get addicted to them :D I don't think I've come across a single youtube video where someone speaks English and I struggle to understand them, but when it comes to movies and tv series, it's just different. As she perfectly explained, the fact that actors try to act and speak naturally native with slangs, murmuring and such then it gets tricky for the untrained ear (brain). Add that to the fact that dialogue volume sometimes tends to be lower than the rest of the audio, it's no wonder even native people can sometimes not understand a certain word (it happens to me in Spanish). I do still struggle sometimes when watching tv series, but especially movies and I think it's just the bad audio encoding (downsampling and such). I actually remember when I stopped struggling while watching youtube videos, that's one of the best feelings one can have :)

i agree with you, a year ago i was in the same place, and sometimes i felt sad about it and then i realized that it is normal and it is a matter of time until you can understand this kind of content... so i dont understand 100% yet but i can undertand so much right now...

I've asked myself why and I realized that when the topic was interesting I understood much better. I also realized that whenever I felt nervous about understanding, I didn't understand anything.

Same here. I think we’re in limbo. Sometimes we understand everything and it cheers up us, on the other hand, sometimes we don’t understand shit and we get frustrated. It takes time, we should always remember this. At first, watching with subtitles was amazing. Today it seems that this does not satisfy me anymore.

Everytthing that she said is true. By next March, I'll have been learning english for 1 year and 8 months. I began since 0. I'm not kidding you, I didn't know how to use the verb -to be- but now I'd like to belive I'm fluent in English.

I've been following this teacher for three years or more. Congratulations, I wish all regions in the USA speak as you do. Sound easy language, but watching movies is something different, as well as in songs... 😩 the only way to learn is dealing every single day with this language; get American friends and watch english channels and radio. I totally agree with her, when you don't understand English it's not a problem, in my experience it just the first stage that your brain processes the language, it just takes time, it depends on your intensive studying. in my case it took me 7-8 months from the point when I just understood some "teaching" videos to the point I could understand native speakers to some extent, it doesn't mean that now I can understand everything but I have made massive progress by immerse myself in English intensively. When my English have improved a lot, everything becomes effortless.

Listening is the key. Listen listen listen and listen more. Then after a few months start speaking but continue listening to English . Get used to different accents because you're gonna struggle if you listen to someone with an accent you are not familiar with. TV Shows are awesome for learning English.
