This video is totally on point! IT can be a contrast of slow paced times then taking on big, fast paced projects. Also I feel the pain of having to work in a network room with a mess of cables like the one you were in! I've been working on cleaning up our network & server rooms to avoid situations like that. Thank you for you comments on being the only female on your IT team. I manage a team of 7 on my IT team with just one female. I try to make sure she feels included in everything and she is one of my smartest and most dedicated employees. I'm happy to see her learning and recently got promoted to a junior SysAdmin spot. "In our building it really wasn't....properly set up" Ah, the relationship with this statement and IT is palpable. So many "just make it work" time frames equal those racks at your building. My company just did some maintenance window work to clean up our Central Office and it's still sad, but kinda sorta manageable now. Keep at it girl!

I never found networking to be exciting same with Windows Server. I found Linux to be way more fun to work with as it keep you busy. I work as both a Sr. Field Tech and Linux Admin that deals with the Red Hat Linux Workstations. I plan on moving into a Cloud role afterwards while i apply my Linux background to DevOps. Cloud computing is where its at as you can never stop learning. Basically once you reach a point you aren't learning anything new in your role, its time make that move skill up and apply for the next role up.

Oh I see, I guess it's more of a preference. I like Networking and I understood the concepts naturally compared to learning about software and coding. Linux indeed is fun to work with also coz it's open source and you can do more customization. I'm also interested in DevOps and I hope I can also finish training on that. Yeah I agree. You should keep moving on but I also wanted to share that realistically, working in IT is not 100% exciting everyday like some people would think

I also deal with the network side of things. Earlier in my career, I met a mid size organization that was always interesting - lots of projects, issues, overtime, and oncalls. My 4 years stint felt like decades, I learned a lot, though I realize its taking a toll on my health so I left.

My work got me a Linkrunner AT, that thing rocks, I only use it once in a while tho. But it's very useful when we do deployments/conversions. Last week, we had to locate which port on the patch panel the WAPs were plugged since it was unlabeled, i just plugged it and it displayed which port on the switch it was on.. But then they had 3 identical switches and not stacked.. siiiigh.. had to walk back to the LInkrunner and tell it to flash the port.. fun times! And yes IT is boring half the time.. I just use that time to catch up on finding the end of the internet.. but im still far from reaching that point.

yes! those tools are really helpful. saves you the time and is more accurate. Sometimes if the linksprinter can't capture the network connection, I use a program called LDWin and it's more reliable than the sprinter too. Atleast we can have some downtime to study for certs too and do some projects

Mas maraming nanonood ng video ko sa iba't ibang parte ng mundo gaya ng US na 25.6% ang nanonood at India na 12.4%. 5.8% lang ang nanonood sa Pilipinas at mas nakakaintindi naman ng English ang mga pinoy dahil 2nd language natin to kaya hnd ko kelangan mag tagalog sa video. English is the universal language that's why I chose to speak in it so more people would understand

Jumping organizations will work, but I would also maximize my time and learn a more complex skill while I have the time. This will give you the ability to improve your technical ability and get promoted or move on. i.e. Linux cert, cisco ccnp, sec+, ceh, Splunk.. This are just a few examples.

Nice video as always, I can relate, especially if theres no new project to work on on. Can you please tell me the name of the blue device in the later part of the video, which you used to check the culprit cable. And does the device check if the cable is properly configured or if theres active connectivity in the cable?? thanks Also did you have to replace the culprit cable??

That device is from Fluke Networks called Pro 3000 Probe. We used that device to trace where the wall port was patched in. It doesn't directly check if the port was properly cabled but it helps to trace and find the port the cable is connected to so we would know the port interface. After we have the interface, that's how we checked the configuration. We didn't replace the cable but we move it to a different port

Hello! I would say yes. It is important to understand subnetting but realistically, we use tools at work like calculator. You really don't have to do it manually etc what's important is understanding the concept

Oh wow. I thought I was overreacting when I saw our cabling. Yeah I'm still grateful for still having a job but still nervous coz of possible layoffs. Unfortunately, we have a hiring freeze at work :( and tech industry have been laying off left and right but I think they will open the jobs soon but not with the crazy huge salaries

We typically use the Linksprinter device but if the actual wall jack is not working or the cable connecting to it, then we use toning but that's usually last resort

Shouldn't the port be numbered on the wall going to the phone? On the switch, run sh mac address-table. This will tell you what switch and port the device is connected to. sh run int gi1/0/1 will tell if the int is shutdown and what voice and data that int is configured for.

unfortunately they didn't label it on the wall jack like I mentioned that nothing was set up properly in our building. I did run sh mac address-table on all the possible switches that it could be connected to. and because I didn't have the interface number, I can't run sh run int that's why we have to resort to physically tracing it. Toning it would be the last resort because I typically do those steps first

Charmer can you describe what your Cisco training was like. For example did you take Netacad courses at a local community college or online? Also do you have a CCNA certification?

Sure!! I took the courses at our community college. Unfortunately I didn't get to take the CCNA exam coz I found a job right away as helpdesk after I finished the training but I might take it this year

Hi great question! Software development and programming isn't for everyone and I chose IT/Network over it is because I was more interested in that area and when I was studying, Networking was easier for me to learn and understand compared to programming. I really struggled learning it so I leaned where I excelled more.
