WHY YOUR PUPPY WONT WALK ON THE LEASH:
This is a very common question I get by frustrated new puppy owners and I have the answer and 3 tips!
So the answer is “Puppies don’t know how to walk on the leash when you get them!” They were just weaned from their moms playing in the yard and the breeder has no time to leash train your new pup! If your lucky they might start putting collars on them, but that can be dangerous if they get caught so your puppy also may have never had a collar on.
Basically, when you get your puppy at 8 to 12 weeks old, you will be the one teaching him or her to walk on the leash. And your puppy may not be good at walking on the leash like a professional all the way until they are 6 months old. Yup, 6 months old! Haha
And when I say not good at walking on the leash I mean “ Your dragging them to move forward, theyre plopping down to sit and take in the atomosphere, theyre smelling everything and trying to put everything in their mouth” - And what does this remind you of “ that’s right a Baby human child who knows nothing” - That’s exactly what you have when you have a new puppy. So patience will be key.
So here are 3 Easy things you can work on with your 8 week old pupppy to them to walk on the leash like a pro :
1. Focus on eye contact and a happy voice! While you start to train your puppy you are also bonding with them. Don’t even worry about the leash yet and just work on getting them into a habit of paying attention to you and following you.
2. Start out walking them around the house with their collar and leash on. Focus on turns and having your puppy follow you while being attached to a leash. Do this for 3 to 5 minutes a day. Then simply let them free roam a back yard or safe patch of grass and just watch them.
3. Use treats or a favorite squeeky toy and lots of praise. Carry treats with you while training your puppy to walk on a leash and this will help their focus and motivation to follow you!
A safe exercise rule of thumb for puppies is 5 minutes of exercise per month of age. So a new 2 month old puppy only needs 10 minutes of exercise after eating before its nap time again, and a 4 month old puppy can have 20 minutes of walking exercise time and so on.
Lastly, please NEVER NEVER NEVER over tire your new puppy so they sleep. This can cause them to get sick. If they are wild, theyre wild and let them play.
If you have a toy breed puppy I strongly encourage you to watch my video on Hypoglycemia in Puppies to make sure your puppy doesn’t crash and burn themselves out!
Lastly, there are no breeds that walk on the leash better than others, haha a puppy is a puppy, But the small toy breeds like chiuahuas and shihtzus and toy poodles are difficult to walk on the leash since they are so small you have to be careful of their necks.
Enjoy the puppy phase, take lots of pictures they grow fast and comment below if you enjoyed this video and let me know how your puppy training is going!

I can't find a video that fits my problem. I have a 4 month old border collie, heeler, catahoula, pointer mix. He'll walk on a leash but he's stubborn and refuses to walk if I'm taking him out to potty and he doesn't want to walk up the stairs in the morning. If i try to lift him up on his feet, he bites me because he thinks its a game. He's extremely smart and can sit, shake, lay down, roll over, fetch and even jump through a hula hoop. He's just recently become stubborn and refuses to walk if it's something he doesn't want to do. He loves treats but that won't even get him walking. Any suggestions?

Same. Treats don't work. Being happy does not work. What works for my dog is turning your back, put a little tension on the leash and just wait.. Long. Many minutes. Eventually he walks. With every walk it's getting better!

My Golden Retriever pup at 7 weeks walk with a lash only I discovered that I hold the leash above his head and DO NOT pull him. Meaning hold the leash loosely. If he felt a bite of pulling his neck he will just pull me back and not walk

Honestly I can't help you 😅 it could be that puppies have an attention span of 4 seconds, I recently got a anatolian shepherd great Pyrenees mix and he also refuses to walk on a leash, he also hasn't had much experience with it but I honestly don't know (commenting to see if anyone gives an answer)

@@steph_. I'd love a suggestion!😁 My dog is now 10 months old and still refuses to go outside when I want him to and will just lay down and refuse to move. I've found ways to trick him but, he's so smart, that it only works a couple of times. So stubborn! Occasionally cheese will work but, still, only if he feels like it. He's 65 pounds so I can't just pick him up😜

Yeaaa this isn't valid to my current dog. I have a 4 month old Chihuahua i got last month. in the beginning he didn't mind the leash and collar and now he scared of it yelps screams when i try to put a leash on him. He corners himself in a corner when the collar on. He's got anxiety and people saying its normal for him to be skeptical of it but never had a problem before until now...i dont get it and it's super frustrating so this video wasn't so helpful🫥😐
