One can read about these practices becoming prevalant and widespread only during the reigns of outside invaders in India, which in my estimate people resorted to, to protect their women from invading armies.

Ma Sharada was always behind a veil. Shree Ramakrishna always advised conservative values (even though he was liberal in his belief about the equality of religions). The sexuality depicted in ancient sculptures is on the outer temple wall. It denotes the crass values of the material world. You leave it behind along with your footwear when you enter the temple. Now the walls become more and more bare until in the sanctum there is only the deity. So we need to leave the navel show behind us if we aspire to spirituality IMHO.
