There was another family in the neighborhood whom Robert tried to infiltrate and groom their young daughter ( I believe her name was Cathy) but the family recognised the behaviour as predatory and ceased contact with him. They knew enough to protect their daughter. Also Robert told the Broberg's he has experienced attraction to young girls in the past and that he was getting therapy for it. He told them that he had to sleep in the same bed as Jan alone and all night as part of his therapy and they allowed him to sleep in their 12 year old daughter's bed 4 nights a week. The parents each had sexual encounters with Robert as well. He made lude and inappropriate comments about the wife to her husband and they allowed that. They admit Roberts infatuation and attention towards Jan was disturbing right from the beginning ( their own words, it's was disturbing) but they allowed Robert to continue this disturbing attention towards their 12 year old daughter. My mother is around Jan's age, and we are South African. She was appalled and really in disbelief that these people didn't know about predators in the 70's. In our 3rd world country we knew guys like Robert existed. They even said his behaviour was disturbing and he told them he has attraction to small girls. These parents are sick. They knew what was going on and they let it happen so they could continue their own sexual relationship with Robert.

Also didn't know Jan has been an actress since the 90s. None of it makes sense and I haven't seen any documented court records etc.. only what they say..

There's a lot of things that doesn't make any sense. I am not defending Berthold actions but can we just look at the family... Mother was sleeping with him Father was in a gay relationship with him He was giving advice to both of them (about their marriage and they were listening) after kidnapping their daughter They didn't do anything after their daughter came home for the 1st time. They just let him talk to her. When she ran 2nd time they report it 2weeks later and her mother was talking to him about their daughter asking him if he wants to marry her after sleeping with him Her mother was (probably is) crazy about him and her father also had feelings for him. And let's talk about Jan... When she was kidnapped for the 1st time,it made sense..she was a small girl, didn't know anything but when she reached 14 i think most of the girls knew what reality and fiction is and she was still believing in aliens.She was writing love letters to him which didn't sounded like they were on mission. She didn't talk about mission. All she was saying is how much she love him, how desperately she wanted to marry him. She wanted to live a life with him like her parents She herself told that her love for him from "like a father" turned into a "love for husband" She loved him when she was 14 or 15. She loved him when she was 16. Don't get me wrong but I think she loved him until some boy (of her age) came into picture and she realized that she shouldn't love an old man and she also told that "he started ignoring her" because she was not a small girl. She was growing and he didn't like it because he had a thing for little girl...so when she realized he didn't love her (at the age of 16-17) she got hurt because she wanted to marry him till then. If he hasn't lose interest in her i think she would have married him. ( I am sympathetic to her because her childhood was ruined and she suffered this horrible thing) Also she and her parents didn't file any report against him after knowing the truth. They hide it for 25+ years and wrote a book. I know it's because of awareness but you don't just write book for awareness,you should get him punished if you really wanted to punish him. I don't know how much truth they are telling but they are definitely not telling 100% of the truth. The family is a mess. The mother was saving her husband's image and the husband was saving his wife's. I am just mad at mother's behavior. She is not normal.

Yall do know that this was a different time and back them it was harder to understand what we understand today. Yes the parents should have seen signs but he was manipulative, the mother is thinking that this man is in love with her not her daughter.
