The problem with Dr. Smith is that they overused her. She's a good character, but her success is based on other's making mistakes. When she is doing something nefarious EVERY SINGLE episode and it is based on someone trusting her, the show isn't asking us to suspend our belief that someone like her exists, it's asking us to suspend the belief that scientists and space travelling competent individuals are making the same mistake over and over again. This calls into question all future decisions they make. Also, the show asks us to suspend the belief that people in literally the most dire survival situation I can think of and who are also parents would keep giving chances to this woman who has put their family members into peril to save herself multiple times now. In reality, Dr. Smith would have been imprisoned forever, abandoned some place, or killed. You're telling me that an ex-Navy Seal dad wouldn't have done this? Lastly, to those saying that without Dr. Smith we wouldn't have a show. That's a BS excuse. They are literally lost in space, the limits are kind of boundless. So, to wrap up, Dr. Smith is a good character but due to the trope of her tricking people repeatedly is one of the main catalysts of the storyline, her presence can grow tiring. She should be sprinkled throughout and perhaps we can change the backbone of all her plans (get someone who doesn't trust you to trust you even though you are obviously a bad guy) to something else every once in awhile.

Luke Nerona unlikely, there were actually times when she helped, she stayed and helped maureen fix the engine when she could’ve just ejected herself and let the Robinsons die in season 1...then in season 2 where she helped steer the Jupiter/boat out of the dangerous rocks to get to the lightning area or whatever to power up the Jupiter...then in the late episodes of season 2, she helped penny’s teacher get in the box with her witchcraft lol and had a moment in the last episode saying that the Robinsons were the closest to family to her and sacrificed herself so that she can buy maureen and the kids sometime before the robots are free. Her actress is great so is her story in the show ;)

Half the things she has done so far would be enough for people with half a brain to see through her mask. I mean, come on, they are space explorers with their survival instincts at full strength and and they want me to believe all of them would be fooled on and on by her smile and childish lies and manipulation? It's making me mad cause I really like everything else in the show but I really don't want to end my work days feeling annoyed by a stupid character.

My main problem with the character and the writing was how she kept getting away with the most feeble lies. There were about four or five times others would confront her on something, she'd tear up or give a stupid excuse and they were like "oh! Ok, I see!" It got to the point of British Comedy after awhile. They certainly made her an unlikable character. She's a straight on psychopath/sociopath and I don't see how she could ever get a "heel-face turn" or turn halfway tolerable. Right now, she's just someone you do not want anywhere near yourself or your family.

This character diminishes the quality of the show. Partly because the actress looks like a 50 year heroine addict and partly because she's written to be too dark and sinister.

yep, I grew up in a family of Dr. Smiths...the problem is, they don't think they are villains, and they can sometimes seem like really cool people who are just misunderstood, or were never loved enough. I think they are more evil than any comic bad guy...because those guys don't hide what they are, and they even sometimes will show mercy for complex reasons.

I'm only on season 2 well the beginning but from watching that and seeing how she gets away with the most bs lies is crazy. The flare gun incident pissed me off like how does she accidentally take the flare gun from Don and why does Don just believe what she says right away. The Dr Smith character is unbearably annoying. I almost stop watching the show because of her. Every time she’s on screen she is doing selfish, sociopathic, betraying stuff. I got sick of that. A character who’s only goal is to fuck everyone is hard to appreciate, and after episode 4 I was done with her. I hope they give the character a chance to redeem herself in the next season. Why did the writers felt the need to had such an antagonizing character in what would have been otherwise a great sci-fi show? I mean, don’t they have all they need in that “Lost in Space” concept to create a great story without that? Being stranded on another planet that is about to kill everyone, and all the social dynamic involved in a group of survivors struggling to save their life and gain power... And i don’t even talk about aliens robot and all the sub plots like the love stories and what not! I don’t mind antagonism, if it helps develop character and story. But nobody can be 100% antagonizing like her. A more nuanced Dr. Smith would have been so great, even more with a great actress like Parker Posey.

Excellent portrayal of a psychopath. Someone on the writing staff has done their research or has had first-hand experience with a psychopath. Kudos. One suggestion, every once in a while, usually after a small triumph, Dr. Smith will seem almost happy at her success. This doesn't really happen with psychopaths - rather than happiness, you see smug satisfaction.

I had the pleasure of meeting her once and had a brief conversation about visual art, and it's so funny because in person she's so genuinely kind and thoughtful. Meanwhile she's so freaking excellent at playing characters that give me chills and make me sqirm uncomfortably in my seat as I watch. I already finished season two . . . Her schemes are ridiculously contrived but I actually find her interesting as a villain, because her goals are not opposed to the protagonists' goals. In fact, they're exactly the same - survival and a new start. But whatever baggage she wants to leave behind she carries with her, and her twisted outlook means she approaches those goals in a most destructive way. You can tell she doesn't like being a bad person - she wouldn't constantly keep coming up with excuses otherwise - but she just keeps digging herself deeper into villainy. In the later seasons, she manages to climb out of that hole just enough to take some responsibility for her actions, but it's telling that her final big heel-face turn is not murdering someone after all...

The dialogue she's given is laughable, any half-witted person would've stopped giving her second-chances a long time ago, and her mock-caring delivery is cringe-worthy. It was very bad, actually. I loved the tension she brought to the series but at the end of the day her evilness was gratuitous. She didn't have a real motivation beyond saving her ass, but that alone doesn't make anything justifiable, moreso because in most situations acting right would've granted her way more benefits and security. I thought they tried to humanize the sociopath in her and failed miserably, and after so many deaths it would be very difficult to simpathize with her. In a show where we know none of the family members are really going to die, having an outright killer just makes a huge contrast and breaks the balance of the narrative. She just has to go.

It kind of felt like they just gave her scenes to have her in the show like when she talks Will into summoning the robot to take down the Dino like creature when we already know if the robot feels Will's fear he'll come running to protect Will even disobeying him to keep Will safe.. So the whole conversation was unnecessary . And for me personally I felt like every scene she was in slowed the pace of the show. I just wanted her off the screen so they could get back to the good stuff. So she wasn't just hated for me but boring as well.

There is no comparing Smith to the Master, because unlike Smith, we can get behind the Master. He's smart, tenacious, and funny, AND there is a reason why he is the way he is. Smith has nothing, at least not from the standpoint of the writing; The actress on the other hand, I applaud her, she gives off the same unnerving sense that wriggles under my skin, like Hanable from the Silence of the Lambs film. I'm on episode 4 now (yes I just started watching it), and I'm skipping my way through every scene with Smith because the character is that bad. She's a sociopath because...it's easy, no work involved for the writers, they can literally do whatever they want because, 'hey, she's nuts'. Since it seems that Smith doesn't get any better (as a character, and I don't mean that she becomes a good person), I don't know if I will be finishing this show.

After finishing the season I can say this, I love her acting, she plays the roll well, but the writers have really given her NOTHING to work with. She 'wants to be free' for whatever reason, she's 'scared' for her safety...apparently, but she's willing to do things that risk her own safety and she's a complete fuck up in her life, yet somehow she's able to fool EVERYONE. These things don't mesh together. It's the whole, 'show, don't tell' idea, and in a way I feel like I'm watching Twilight again where they say a character reads books and is smart or in love but nothing that is shown actually reinforces it and in fact does the opposite. Maybe it's because we, the audience, see everything, so we're not subject to the same limitations as the other characters, but I cannot see any real reason for Smith to act the way she does. She doesn't even seem that smart to be honest, she's just bumbling along, throwing darts everywhere and hoping some, or even one, of them will stick. They absolutely need to flesh out her character more, give us a reason why she's so strung out on needing freedom that she'll basically destroy everyone's chances of living just to try and recreate what Will did.

The difference between characters like Smith and characters like, let's say, Palpitine is that while palpitine is an evil overlord responsible for the deaths of many innocent people, Smith is simply a liar and a manipulator. The idea of some old dude commanding an evil space legion inside a floating ball that shoots death lasers is ridiculous, but Smith's actions and mannerisms are so grounded in our reality I suspect it hits pretty close to home for a lot of people who've had to deal with someone like that, or are too afraid to open up out of fear of coming into contact with such a terrible person. At least that's my opinion.

This is a character based on an earlier character where the actor playing the part played the character in a way that he thought(correctly) would keep his character from being killed off, abandoned or otherwise written out. Dr. Smith is a function of Mr. Harris wanting to support his wife and any kids they may have still had at home. Now, Harris's Dr. Smith can be seen as a professional spy creating a "legend" to keep himself from being abandoned or killed by the Robinsons, by appearing to be a silly, vain, cowardly old man.Posey's Dr. Smith is built around BEING a sociopath, as opposed to being someone whose work has given him sociopathic behaviors. Because this is based on a former work, it may be much less interesting even if equally (or better) acted than the original.

Doctor Smith I would say was well written but poorly used. The most important part the writers brought attention to is that she does not see herself as a villain. The man in the airlock she didn't start the timer, she "merely" didn't act to save him, leaving Don she "merely" refused to look after him and chose to increase her own chances. These aren't statements I agree with but justifications the character can have to claim that they are not evil. I hated her and that was due to reasons the writer wanted. But I also hated her as a plot tool. The show would have done better I feel had she been in the background more for the first half of the show with the family dealing with environmental issues. Her plans are laid such that she frequently causes more issues not just for herself but everyone else and thus by extension risks her own survival. This is what annoyed me about her and made me want to stop watching, it was too much.

But they forget she killed her sister in cold blood, stole the chip from her arm after her sister give her everything to stay a new life with. So the excuse she just wants to leave earth behind to start a new life is mute. Everyone assumes she took the test and passed like everyone else and deemed her worthy to be there. All she had to do was help when needed and keep her head down. But she was conniving just for the sake of being conniving from the beginning. She may not have killed her sister Dr Smith has made me give up on episode 7. But she drugged her sister cut deep into her wrist, after her sister offered to give Smith everything.

what is not the truth? There are several scene about her being interogated & captured by the captain, telling her he will get her back to hearth or worst. Since she get on the ship, she was an illegal & put her survival instinct mod on. All the subject of this character is about us, as spectator. We are not use to see this kind of "vilain". Everything she does is about her survival, whatever we think, for her its the reality & when an animal is hunted, he would anything in prpose to survive. So mostly we should hate her as an enemy of the story, but moraly, she just does whatever it needs to survive herself cause nobody take care of her, not like the Robinson. Its easy to be a "decent"person when you have people to get your back & cheer you up. And about her sister, this "everything" is really your personnal point of view. For Smith it was nothing since earth was kinda already fuked. It wasnt a sacrifice from her sister, she just get rid of her gultyness about her sister by giving something she didnt desire anymore. So you blame her to refuse to beg & accept the leftovers? I respect her for taking what she wants. According to their past as familly members, you can even tell its kinda fair.

Dr Smith's character is summarized by Dr Smith, herself, in episode 2 after she and Don escape the crashed Jupiter. Don engages in a dialogue with her where he says that the answer to the question, "Can you fix this?" is always "Yes." Smith's comment on Don's remark is to ask, "So you're going to bullshit our way to safety?" In asking this, she is also telling us that this is exactly how she will and has approached most if not all of the problems in her life. She reads people quickly and well, and can improvise stories to push people in the directions that suit her needs of self-preservation. She has little to no moral compass, therefore any seeming acts of kind or generosity are purely motivated out how she believes this will help her obtain or maintain the greatest sense of control and power possible because for her having power over a situation or others is safety.

Smith's real name, we find out, is June Harris; June as in June Lockhart who created the role of Maureen Robinson in the 60s, and Harris as in Jonathan Harris, who played the original Dr. Smith. This is a clue that the 60s Dr. Smith will inform the present show's character. In the 1960's, Jonathan Harris's Dr. Smith was the character we most loved to hate on TV; it got so bad that Harris had to rewrite his character as more of cowardly comic relief to avoid him getting killed off. I am delighted that Parker Posey has found her own way to be as obnoxious and unwanted. How the writers will make her more tolerable will be one of their key tasks for season 2. Lost in Space would not be Lost in Space without a Dr. Smith.

I felt the writing for her character was fantastic. I have seen people manipulated like that and have been manipulated like her character does. It seems so foolish while watching from an outside perspective yet we all fall for those kind of manipulations. The helpless character, the helpful character, the friendly character. All ways in which we can and are taken advantage of on a regular basis.

Smith specifically wasn't the problem though - Parker Posey is fantastic, and her Smith is fantastic. But the entire plot of the show is reactive, and Smith is no different, and it wears kind of thin to have a character written in such a way that the only thing they're allowed to do is purposely create conflict with no room for solid characterization in-between. Hell, I know it's an age-old cliche to end a season on a cliffhanger, but this season felt specifically like _the entire point_ of the season was just to get the show to the season-ending cliffhanger. I actually loved this reimagining, but it gets tedious to have a show center around such a straightforward narrative that it feels like every fifteen minutes has to be devoted to throwing a monkey wrench into a situation. When all you do is add levity to innocuous situations, eventually you get desensitized to the moments of levity, but you're still stuck with the innocuous situations in-between. I honestly really want a season 2, but they need to refine their concept and think about how to build on these characters more without just littering an occasional five-minute flashback here and there. There's characterization of these characters, but it always feels secondary to trying to create another tense catastrophe, and Smith feels like she's just there because they couldn't make the ship take-off and crash-land in various landscapes for ten episodes worth of content. She was definitely as antagonistic as the original Smith: for all of his hamminess, Harris' Dr. Smith was the _whole_ reason they were 'lost in space', and he never did a single thing to _not_ endanger the Robinsons, specifically Will. The biggest problem with this show is that it tries to evolve the format of the show without evolving the content: it stays _too_ true to the original in all the wrong places. For an example of character evolution done right, I'd rather point to the interpersonal dynamics between Judy and Don, which - while removing the romantic undertones - keeps them grounded as trusted companions

"This villain is too realistic to enjoy." ... she’s a notoric liar and we all have our personal experiences with people like Dr. Smith in real life. It hurts to see her lying, because we all know that feeling of being betrayed. We don’t want realistic villains, we want "Die Hard" villains.

Just yesterday, I started watching this show.....BINGE WATCHING! OMG! Okay, so I was not too thrilled with the first episode but gave it a chance for the next one....and that's when Dr. Smith showed up. WOW! They are keeping the same "idea" of the original but totally twisting it around. That is so very cool. I have not finished the first season as of yet....but I am hooked. I like all of the changes and challenges that they are being put through. And that "glimmer of hope" as you said with Smith.....well, there was once a show called ONCE UPON A TIME . Things did turn around. Hmmmm.

As someone who is into writing I can admit her antagonist role is played very well and projected well. But with that said, we dislike the character so much that her role may be slightly over done. Like everyone dislikes her so no one wants to see her backstory or how she came to be. She just doesn't seem to be able to be portrayed as a successful Antagonist instead is portrayed as someone who preys on the weak and helpless to further her own gain. Every Antagonist has a struggle that made them the way they are. Anakin became Darth Vader because his mother died, the people around him didn't trust him. His feelings over took his rational thinking that the Jedi have. So her character doesn't really have a bad enough of a backstory to really prove how evil she is, she just is evil. Even serial killers have a backstory.

She thinks at least 6 steps ahead of anyone else, predicting behaviors/situations that are almost impossible to imagine. When in need, she turns on a dime and saves the situation brilliantly. With those skills her backstory should have been more than a "failed" criminal, but a successful mastermind.

The original Dr. Smith (Jonathan Harris [and her real name is June Harris]) said that his character started out as "a deep-dyed snarling villian" and that he changed the character because he knew they would kill him off in a year if he wasn't more likeable.

  • @finnian1209

I think what people hate about her is how realistic she is. We are used to villains with dramatic backstories, and villains that we can cry for, as well as hate. Remember, villains are supposed to be the bad guys. They are supposed to resemble the bad people we know. Dr. Smith is a criminal, and her motive is to continue hiding from the law. She is not a good person. She's not supposed to be likeable, she's supposed to be an obstacle and threat, and I think the show did a perfect job of showing how like many career criminals, everyone is either a potential obstacle or tool to her. Remember Umbridge, from Harry Potter, and how everyone hated her because she represents the unfairness of authority figures that you have no power to stop? I think Dr. Smith might be a similar situation. I can't think of anything she might represent, but people only hate a villain this much when they hit close to home.

Yes but unlike most people the reason i hate her character is because half of her actions make no sense for someone whos trying to survive and get off the planet. She constantly dismantles everything that would save them all. For someone whos as smart and conniving as her she makes idiotic choices that just pushes her farther away from her goal. She just there to create chaos but her own chaos is even detrimental to her. But she just thinks shes helping herself. So shes just an idiot
