I met Bob May at a Syifi convention in Atlantic City. He was at a table and asked me if I could get him some water. I brought him the water and he then introduced me to the robot which was behind the curtain as a surprise for the convention. I had my pic taken with me standing next to him and the robot. Funny is that was back in 1989 . I still have the pic: and a lot of great memories of that day.

Loved Lost in Space show ! Grew up with it ! I'm 65 now !

This showed up on my radar :) Probably the most iconic shows of the 60s that we watched as kids. The first season was extremely good. Especially the Cyclops Monster. We would hide behind the couch when that monster showed up. At the time all we had was a 19" RCA black and white TV on a wire stand with wheels. We even had the tin foil on the antennas to improve reception. Really growing up in the 60s was quite something and to bad it all ended. So much fun watching those TV shows as kids! Fond memories also!

A few years ago I went to the "meet an Astronaut" lunchen at Kennedy Space Center and in one of the buildings is a Lost in Space Robot on display. I don't know if it is an original or a copy but it was awesome to see because I grew up in the 60's and loved Lost in Space.

I grew up with lost in space, and built my first robot shortly after, built of old parts. Good memories.

Thank you for posting this! The Robot has always had a small place in my heart. My mother LOVED watching "Lost in Space," growing up. The Sci-fi channel used to have reruns in the 90s into the 2000's and I can't tell you how often the phrase, "You Bubble-headed Booby!" by Doctor Smith insulting the Robot has been ingrained in my memory courtesy of my Mom. ^_^ (My dad was the StarTrek/StarWars fan)

I watched this show as a kid, and I still love it. I own it dvd. The robot, designation B-9 is my favorite character, I loved the relationship he had with Dr. Smith...their verbal exchanges still make me chuckle.

You are a sad individual.

You forgot that there were 3 robots designed by Robert Kinoshita. I was only used as a prop in distant shots like in the Jupiter II. One was used primarily in the first season and you almost never saw the lower half while he moved. The third and final robot was used in the last two seasons. The robot that was modified was the first robot from season one. The third robots chassis was signed by all the cast and put in storage. It was found and restored by a prop maker in Hisparia CA and a newspaper article was written about the restoration. That prop maker was arrested because he had stolen many props from Star Trek, Logans Run, Charley and the Chocolate Factory and the third robot from Lost In Space. The third robot was returned to the studio around 2003 in its restored condition.

You neglected to mention the Toro lawnmower commercial. The robot was a museum tour guide in the future lecturing on the features of the Toro mower. "This was how they mowed grass." said the Robot. A little girl asks her mother, "Grass? What's that?"

The Robot prop costume in the Toro commercial is a very decent replica that was utilized by Kevin Burns and others. I met Billy Mumy years ago and he said he really loved filming with that robot in the scenes and the dialogues with Dr. Smith.

Many years ago when Dr Smith and The Robot came to Australia for stage show. The Robots head bubble was broken in transit, I was working in a Perspex factory and got the job of recreating the bubble head replacement. It was great to be able to do some work on him.

I saw the robot on a LIS display in the Science Fiction Museum in Seattle about 10 years ago. The back had a number of signatures, I believe from the LIS cast who were still around at some point, perhaps from the 25th anniversary. Very cool, since I loved the show as a kid in the ‘60s! Wonder if it is still there?

Robot got real depressed in the late ‘80s when he couldn’t even get a cameo on Robocop.

I remember seeing Mystery Island as a kid, and wondering why they would mess up the LiS robot so much? Then again, I was also shocked to find out most Gerry Anderson props (Thunderbirds, Space 1999) were just tossed in a rubbish skip when filming finished. 😱😭

I just turned 62 on Sunday, February 4, 2024 and I have been a fan of the robot since I started watching Lost In Space in syndication in the mid 70s after school broadcast on Channel 5 WNEW in New York. Thank you for the awesome videos that take me right back to my youth.

Its funny , because in some scenes you could clearly tell the robot was not rolling on it's wheels , and that the actor ( shown just waist up ) was just stepping along . And such campy and crude special effects , but l still love the show .

Fantastic! You never know when something you create for yourself will blow up and get seen by many. "Robot" is beloved by millions around the world. Can't go wrong. Congratulations.

I met Mark Goddard at a comic con show and we talked about that robot. He said that him and Billy Mumy locked Bob May inside while they went to lunch. Bob lit up a cigar and was smoking. The smoke came out of the robot and Irwin thought it was on fire with Bob inside. He grabbed a fire extinguisher and sprayed the robot, unlocked it only to find Bob smoking and reading. I asked if the robot was ruined and he told me that they had 10-12 other robots on hand in the event they failed.

As a kid I loved Lost in Space. That's why I clicked on your channel. Thanks for sharing.

I personally was not a huge fan of Lost In space. I watched Lost in Space as a kid because there was nothing else to watch at that time slot in the late 60's.. I think we had five TV channels to view at that time. This also included manipulating the rabbit eared antenna on top of the TV for "FAIR" reception. I absolutely do appreciate and love the nostalgia of watching it now though!

HAH I still have the original toy robot. Got it for xmas around 1966. Dont have the original box and missing the plastic strip to hold the two D cell batteries but still works and lights up.

I remembered having one of the toy robots. 2aa batteries to light up the robots lights. It was a fun toy.

Being 60 years old, and having 'Lost in Space' as part of my childhood, it is intriguing to me that with language learning models and advances in robotics, we have finally reached a point in our technology where we could actually create a real robot with all of the same functionality and personality as the robot in the show. I hope someone actually does it, as it would be cool to see the birth of the 'real' Robot.

I briefly worked for Kevin Burns a few years back and Robot from the original series and Robot from the recent Netflix reboot was just outside Kevin's office as you exit out of the elevator.

Thank you, Dan. B9 has always been a favorite of mine along with Robby from Forbidden Planet. The two bots shared an episode of Lost in Space if I remember correctly. I saw every LIS episode!!! I very much value any history of B9 and I even considered buying a B9 kit when they were available online. Be blessed, Dan!

I remember my parents took us from New York to California for a vacation and we went to Sea World and out of the blue the robot was there, behind a glass case and I was a huge fan. I remember looking at the bubble and seeing individual little light bulbs just laying in the rim of the bubble and there was dust and cobwebs all over it. It was protected, but needed a cleaning.

I thought Robbie the robot was first from the film " The forbidden Planet" which made a big impact on me as a youngster and led to a huge interest in Sci-Fi. This was made around 1954 I believe.

They were not the same robot. Forbidden Planet was released in 1955, 13 years prior to "Lost In Space". They both, do, share a common name, however.

Lost in Space debuted in 1965, and ceased production in 1968. Forbidden Planet was released in 1956, so 9 years separate the two.

Back in the 70s, I went to the Ice Capades at Madison Square Garden. After the show as we were leaving, I saw the Robot in the backstage area. I guess it must have been a replica, but I was thrilled nonetheless.

Hi Dan. Just joined your channel. I'm 64. Saw the first episode of Lost in Space day 1 and still watch to this day thanks to dvds. For Christmas I got the Jupiter 2 model with the space pod. Was so excited didn't open anything else. Wish I still had it today. Thanks for your channel. Brings back special memories.

I will always hold dear the memories of watching every Lost in Space episode when I was 6 years old. From the very first episode to the very last. And then through my teen years watching the wonderfully campy re runs through the 70's. I am so glad to see that you are skillfully , and carefully crafting such memory jerking , and informative mini documentaries on this , and the other really great films and TV programs from that and other eras. You have won me as a fan and subscriber , and I hope many , many more jump on board this bandwagon of fun , film , and knowledge as you produce these. Great Job !!

Call me nuts but in the 70s I recall the Lost In Space Robot in a some kind of pudding cup commercial. I lived in southern Ontario, the commercial was on a Buffalo NY station. I recall it looked unaltered.

as a little kid, I wrote to Billy Mummy and he sent me an autographed picture in his silver space suit. I was a NASA nut and followed every space flight. My Uncle was involved with the retrieval of the Astronauts in a Gemini mission in the 1960's. He was a Navy flyer and fairly crazy to ride with in a car as he would just take a left into a filbert orchard at road speed, what fun! There was a company that made full sized replicas of the robot. It had working lights and could speak every line it ever said on screen, They cost $24k, but this is going back a few years.

Funny to note that the Japanese/American who designed the B9 suit started his career designing juke boxes and pinball machines. You can definitely see the influence! His 'Robbie' from Forbidden Planet is still my favourite, but B9 is a close second. Thank God it was saved and restored.

Glad to know your channel is expanding. To be honest, back in the mid 1970s when “Lost In Space” was in syndication and shown from a local ABC-affiliate TV station in Montgomery, Alabama, my brothers and I hated it. No one ever got killed, or died. “Star Trek (TOS)” had deaths, but Lost In Space was all about love. The same thing with “The A Team”; despite all the gunfire and explosions, no one ever got killed.

True fact: Irving Allen the shows producers phone number is on the side of the landing craft shuttle in the original TV series.

Actually, BEFORE Mystery Island, the Robot was used as the spokesperson for a short-lived advertising campaign of an early form of lunchbox snacks called "Take-Em Tubs" These were little cans of pudding with pull-off tops (made of metal back then) There were at least two tv commercials and an supermarket display.

Excellent voice! Amazing. I worked in live production for 18 years, 15 years at CNN. I know quality.

Loved that show when I was a kid. Thanks for sharing. was very interesting.

When I saw him reused on that one Saturday Morning show, I had a *"Look what they did to my boy!"* moment.

Cool robot and allot of thought as to functionality of the time. Treads, hooks to lift, etc

In the early-70's, the robot was in Fresno,CA standing outside a pool hall and stationary. I have no idea why it was there, but it was a cool sight. It looked all original so it hadn't been messed with yet. I saw it when I went to a new stereo/record store across the breezeway.

Didja know the "Forbidden Planet" robot is on a property just North of Spokane, Washington?

Glad that I'm not the only one who noticed this, lol. I was going to comment the same thing based on his smoothness, tone, delivery & inflection.

The Robot was at Marineland in Palos Verdes, not Sea World. I saw it there numerous times as a kid.

I happen to own the same color scheme Remco Robot you had to the right of yourself from my perspective. Have 3 others as well in different color combo's. Was a huge fan of LIS back in the mid 60's! Keep doing what you do! You should have your own TV show but KZread these days might be an easier gig. I don't know. Thanks for all you bring us!

In 1994, Jonathan Harris toured Australia in his one man (and one robot) spoken word show, "Never Fear, Smith Is Here!" A faithful replica Robot, built by Lewis P Morley using original moldings, would allow a world-first live insult-off between Robot and Doctor Smith. The scripted segment featured the pre-recorded voice of Dick Tufeld, the original Robot voice actor.

I've been reading the comments and I know a lot of people are remarking on how they are life-long fans of LIS. Well, let me be one more. Since discovering your channel a few days ago I've been absorbing all of your LIS historical knowledge. I too was a kid of the 60s and remember watching the show & being absolutely mesmerized. I fell in love with the robot like many boys did I'm sure. I also loved the Jupiter 2 and wanted to live in it. Even when I was adult in the 80s & 90s I told myself if I ever won the lottery I'd have the Jupiter 2 built just for me. And my daily driver would be the original Batmobile! LOL Happy to see someone with such a reverence for the robot. I used to have one of those old red battery operated LIS robots that you display in this video. Got it for Christmas. I was once also fortunate to spend and entire afternoon with June Lockhart when she came to the radio station I worked at for an interview. We spoke for hours. She was very generous with her time & it was a wonderful experience. BTW I think I have a copy of your brother's book. I bought it at a convention many years ago. Thanks for all the great content. Ever consider doing something on The Invaders?

That was one of my favorite shows growing up. Interestingly, the show's most famous catchphrase (Robot), "Danger, Will Robinson, was actually only uttered once in the entire 83-episode series' original run. "Danger! Danger!" not followed by any particular name, is heard several times though! The Robot identifies itself in The Ghost Planet (1966) as "Robot Model B9, designed and computerized as a mechanized electronic aid for Earth voyagers engaged in astral expeditions." The character 'Robot' was ranked #14 in TV Guide's list of the "25 Greatest Sci-Fi Legends" (August 1, 2004 issue)!

Fun to see all these videos. I now want a chat show where all the TV robots get together and talk about their time working in Hollywood.

In 77 I was 8 years old & had already seen Lost In Space many times in reruns & I immediately recognized ‘Pops’ as the modified robot prop.

Cool stuff for sure. I still have my Robot. Sad how that robot and other props get disregarded. One person who saw the future in saving props was Debbie Reynolds. She had massive collection

4:12 - Aw, man, poor old McLean Stevenson. His career really hit the skids after he left M*A*S*H, didn't it? I don't remember the show "America," but a quick search told me that it was a syndicated daytime talk show that only lasted 16 weeks. I wonder how many people watching that clip now even know who Stevenson was.

I was just about to get moody that you don't have a Robby model... and then I saw him peaking out at the back :') welldone sir ((I really wanna get that for my dad... hell me too)).

Watched Lost in Space as a kid...and awhile back bought the DVD set...remembered their robot and Robby the robot from Forbidden Planet dueling it out in an episode...battle for the planet begins....fun times.

The Robot had difficulties getting additional roles as he was typecast as 'that fat robot'. He lost some weight and later in the 70's got a reoccurring gig as C3PO's stand in. He is now a regular and many Cons.
