Why We Don't Like Modern Clothing

Музыка

If you've been on the channel before, you know Katie and I love everything old, and that includes clothes. We feel that older clothing was made better, looks better and is more comfortable than modern clothing. Now, that's not to say that we don't own any modern clothing at all, but we typically try to find older clothing. We love looking for clothes at thrift shops, yard sales, consignment stores and even online at places like Ebay and Etsy.
Drop a comment and let us know what kind of clothes you like or don't like to wear. As always, thanks for watching and God bless you!

You young ladies are a credit to your generation. For me, being older than 55, most modern clothing is I'll fitting. Many of the styles are also way too revealing. Besides that newer clothes are made shabbily. My Mom taught me to thrift shop when I was a teenager.

I hate modern clothes too. The jeans never stay up no matter how large or small I am. Shirts are too revealing or see-through or patterns are ugly. Material is cheap too. As a teen I thrifted and I still do.😍

You two young ladies are a credit to your generation! I pray more young ladies watch this video and look up the meaning of modesty. I’m 60 and grew up as a Catholic girl in the 60’s 70’s etc. therefore I’ve seen many changes in “what’s popular “. I’ve tried the on line clothes but have found anything not made in the USA is not quality material. Levi’s brand use to be the best most long lasting jeans you could buy. Keep doing you!!

I remember learning about "planned obsolescence" and how many companies make electronics and other gadgets to breakdown within a certain time frame so that customers will keep buying more and more. Honestly, anymore, I think every company has adopted the same mentality now, even clothing companies. They don't want to make clothes that last in my opinion. They want you to keep buying their brand of clothes so that they'll make more money. Buying older clothes makes sense and is a great idea.

There used to be a certain shop in the mall which had clothes that looked very tailored and expensive. One day I finally bought a few pieces and they all faded and lost their shape immediately after I washed them - cold and delicate and hung to dry like the directions said. That was such a bad value that I never shopped there again and I told everyone I knew not to shop there either.

Oh, it's already been a thing with those of us in the younger generations. Problem is, a lot of us can't afford quality vintage clothing or don't have access to it (I live in a rural area where the few shops that carry vintage clothes sell them for $100 or more per garment, and you're lucky if you can find halfway decent thrifted clothing). I've taken to buying ugly old woolen and linen suits (ones that nobody seems to want- they sit on the racks for months) from thrift shops and pulling them apart to remake into clothes that I can and would actually wear.

my mom, now 97, now in her journey of dementia, made a cool comment while we were going thru her 'old' coats that dont fit. laying them out, side by side next to the 'new' she said... ' not only do the new coats actually lack quality and craftsmanship, but they look like it. then she sentimentally held each coat in hand and talked about the times she wore them. commenting on how she wished they had on some shelf in some warehouse somewhere this exact coat, just a larger size.

You girls are speaking my language! About a year ago, I started making my own clothes. I wanted to wear more dresses and skirts (and I mostly don’t like what’s available in stores), I wanted to wear natural (as opposed to synthetic) fabrics, I wanted clothes that were more well made and would last, and I like the feeling of wearing something I’ve made myself. I’m teaching my daughter to see as well. Beyond that, we mostly use the thrift store for our clothes these days - mostly because of prices, but also because I’d rather not support fast fashion.

You two brought up so many valid points of decrease in quality, lack of colors/prints, and just the ability to find a "whole" top or dress. Vintage and consignments shops are so practical! Today, for modern fashion they cheat you with quality and expect you to pay a ridiculous amount of money for less! Thank you ladies for making this video! She couldn't believe I had gotten it at a thrift store. It was not a favorite piece. I don't even know what I did with it. Even after my kids were grown and I had moved up in my career and could afford what I wanted I still went to thrift store for most of my clothes.

I’m 59 years old and just discovered thrifting for clothing and home decor. I love it! And I must say, my favorite clothing item found so far is a Sears and Roebuck junior bazaar black sweater! I could have cried when I found it and it is in almost perfect condition. That sweater takes me back to shopping for Christmas from the Sears Christmas wish catalog. Boy, do I miss those days!!!

When I was a kid, my mom had me put on"school clothes" in the morning, then change into "play clothes" when I got home. I was glad to be able to wear a T-shirt and jeans all day once I went away to college! Now I've "graduated" to sweat pants, and only "dress up" for such occasions as weddings and memorial services.

Absolutely agree! I would much rather go to thrift stores, than a modern clothing store! Some of these styles are hideous now days, especially the low rise jeans, when you bend over, make sure you have a long shirt on, or people will see your tushie , and my belly rolling over the top of those jeans! No thank you, I’m not model material, never will be, and being modest now days is unheard of! Y’all are amazing women! your mama and dad did an awesome job on teaching your morals! I've never watched before, but that was a great video. I am totally of the opinion that my clothes need to be comfortable, but modest also! It's so refreshing to see young women who have your attitude. Don't lose that! Too many people walk around half-dressed, and they don't realize how terrible it is. They've never been taught to honor themselves, and others, by dressing modestly.

Exactly! So many people are completely clueless about the idea that modesty is a way to respect/honor others. They can’t even conceive of it. And when you try to explain, they deny it and call you all kinds of names. They can’t even picture a world where the body is not the main focus. They can’t picture a world where young women aren’t half naked in front of married men and children. They can’t picture ever being on the other side of the coin, in the older married woman’s shoes. They just have no idea. It’s very upsetting to see.

My mother made a lo of my dresses when I was little. Then she taught me how to sew when I was 12. We would go to the fabric store (Hancock's, not around any more), pick out a pattern, get the notions, and I would cut out the pattern Friday night, sew it Saturday and wear it to church on Sunday! Recently have found thrifting for my jeans. I also like Gloria Vanderbilt jeans as well as Lee jeans. Your parents did a fine job raising yall and I know they are so proud 👏

l laughed when I saw the thumbnail of what you're wearing. The paisley blouse is similar to my favorite when I was your age. You are absolutely right: The current quality of clothing is lower despite higher prices. The funny thing is that thrift stores used to be places where you'd find well-made, well-worn clothes to tide you over until you could save up for something new. For example, I bought a boy's woolen topcoat with a satin lining (good luck finding a lined coat now) until I could afford a proper winter coat; I passed it to my bff who moved to Tennessee. Now new clothes are pre-ripped and fade quickly, but the thrift-shop finds are better quality.

Modest women are the most beautiful, not needing to show off their cleavage. I work at a grocery store and I see all kinds of people in all kinds of clothes. I’ve seen young women in their 30s and younger wear form fitting pants that are so tight they look painted on! Thank God for y’all, Katie and Corie and how you dress modestly because you have standards, high standards. I guess living at a beach community perhaps influences people to dress a certain way. But once in a while, I see a woman wear a pretty dress and when I do, I compliment her and just about all of them respond with much joy and gratitude, especially the older women in their sixties and onward. Thank you for sharing this with us, Katie and Corie. It’s truly a wonderful blessing to have such a good and godly influence as you two on KZread. Y’all are a breath of fresh air! Blessings!

I've found that most of these clothes have been in style forever.

I feel this way too. I had my son a few months back and the only clothes I can still wear from pre-pregnancy are a pair of hand-me-down coveralls and jeans. They don't make clothes like they used to. I know because I bought all new tops and blouses for breastfeeding modestly, within 2mo, and just a weekly washes on gentle, the necklines are giving out, stiching under the armpit is busted on two of them, and the material has just stretched beyond belief! They were loose fitting to start! I wrote both companies with no avail. I've got the same issue with modern baby carriers too. Both my JJ Cole baby sling and my Ergo Omni 360 are unsafe with seams splitting. I'm so frustrated by the quality received and how little use I've gotten before they've required repair. I've now resorted to wearing my son in my coveralls. He fits perfectly behind the bib. Just had to lengthen the straps a few inches! I grew up as the middle of 5 though. So, I'm accustomed to making things work, even if it may look odd to others. 😂

I enjoyed 😊Thank you. I grew up in the 70s and 80’s. I loved the clothes that were worn by my relatives, though they would have been outdated. I Love natural fibers, so those cotton button front blouses and the cotton skirts and dresses is what I liked, but mom liked the polyester, because as you say, it doesn’t need to be ironed. But in the 80’s there was a cotton “revival” and I LOVED it and I loved ironing 😂I still like to iron. When I raised my children in the 90’s they wore second hand and home made clothing. But always looked nice. A “standard” or guide it seems we used was: a collar on the shirt for going out, and no collar was ok for at home. I’m not sure how it started but it stuck and even after they were grown they tended towards this for several years. I love vintage clothing the quality and fit is great. And I’m one who greatly enjoys the prints! I had taught the boys about fabric quality when they were young so they could help look for clothes. We walk along the thrift rack at the fabric if you see quality fabric, then you check out the size. I would show them poor quality and good and taught them that spending more money on something that would last was worth it, if it was classic in cut.My dad had a wool sweater from the 50’s, I wore it and my boys wore it, that’s the quality we like. Thank you so much ladies, I listen to your music, it’s on my list!

She would send her Mom clippings from fashion magazines in the Fall then by Spring drive out to Kansas to pick them up. They were perfectly tailored and she was sportin’ the Jackie O look with hat and matching gloves. My Mom and I considered in 1980 opening a clothing shop because I am 6 foot tall with a 36.5 inch inseam. All ya’ll with long legs know buying off the rack is seriously hit or miss. I love tie dye. Ice dyed and water color random patterns are my favorite. I thrift shop and repurpose a new cut or color. I am 1 of 10 in the family and that raises up creative people. Blessings to you girls.

Ladies - you've discovered your own style which is such a good thing. Vintage clothing is fabulous (not all of it, but I'm with on you vintage clothing). I love that Corie mentioned liking the more tailored clothing, the seams, etc. YES! Continue wearing what makes YOU feel good and feel comfortable! 100% agree with Katie about dressing modest - you don't have to expose your skin or wear tight clothes to be attractive. It's all about incorporating being tasteful into your personal style. What I love is when I'm trift shopping (or shopping on Ebay, Poshmark, Goodwill, Salvation Army for instance), is being able to get what I want without looking like I bought something from a thrift store. It's so easy. Rich people thrift shop, too. I get compliments on what I wear, and when the man in my life gets a sparkle in his eyes when he sees what I'm wearing, well that's just icing on the cake (and it's important to ME that he finds me attractive). You ladies are on the right track for sure. You know your style and you're rocking it.
