Why Vivian Vance Celebrated the Death of William Frawley

Ойын-сауық

Did you know that Vivian Vance was said to have broken out the champagne upon hearing the news of former on-screen husband William Frawley’s passing and that Desi Arnaz was initially hesitant about hiring William because the veteran vaudeville performer had such a negative reputation as an alcoholic curmudgeon in the industry? William Frawley had already been working in the entertainment industry for several decades before he was cast on I Love Lucy to play the role of Fred Mertz. However, the actor didn’t start out in the industry at a very young age. Instead, he worked as a stenographer and court reporter before eventually venturing into vaudeville alongside his brother later in his adulthood.

William found modest success with his brother as a vaudeville duo and found even more success when he formed a vaudeville duo alongside his first wife, Edna Louise Broedt. After their divorce, William ventured to Broadway, and then to Hollywood. While William continued finding work thanks to his talent, his rampant alcoholism caused him to burn bridges in the industry wherever he went.
By the time William was hired onto I Love Lucy, he was in his 60s and had a terrible reputation. Desi was hesitant to hire him but ended up deciding he was right for the role. William treated Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz with respect, but he was verbally abusive towards his on-screen wife, portrayed by Vivian Vance. Join Facts Verse as we explore why Vivian Vance celebrated the death of William Frawley.

I thought Desi's casting of Vance and Frawley was a stroke of genius. Despite the age gap they portrayed the embittered couple beautifully. I couldn't imagine anyone else playing the roles. They bounced off Lucy and Desi's characters wonderfully.

Yeah they bounced off of each other, but my word, 2 no actually 3 Bully’s Vivian had to be around on a daily basis. Ever heard the saying, It takes one to know one. Yeah I thought that was odd description. I remember as a little kid watching this with my Mom. Well I would be on the floor with my🔥Hot🔥Wheels🔥, while she watched the 📺TV📺. They looked like a couple? But now when I see the reruns, and even back when I became a teenager, I remember thinking, HOW did this guy get her? He was old, paunchy or chubby, loud, ornery, folically challenged, and not exactly James Dean. Vivian on the other hand seemed cuter than they showed. I'll bet that was a difficult time for her. First to work alongside a cranky old fart who constantly was whining, bitching, and screaming at you for a plethora of reasons.

In the book "Lucy and Ricky and Fred and Ethel" Desi told Frawley that he would be given ONE chance to be unable to work because he was hung over, and if there was a second time he would be written out of the show. In turn, Frawley wanted a clause in his contract that if the NY Yankees ever made the World Series, that he would be given time off to attend the games.

Yes, poetcomic1, Our Bill was a huge fan of the New York Yankees - and was very smart to have the "World Series" (time off) clause written into his contract. I believe Mr. Frawley enjoyed four "World Series" adventures with the Yankee team during his "I Love Lucy" run. He picked a great decade to do so - Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, to name just two, were Yankee greats that many still recall to this day!

Desi Arnaz died of lung cancer back on December 2, 1986. He was 69. And Lucille Ball died of a ruptured aorta back on April 26, 1989. She was 77. On Thursday, March 3, 1966, William Frawley suffered a heart attack right out there on Hollywood Blvd. after seeing the Natalie Wood movie Inside Daisy Clover. He was then dragged to the Knickerbocker Hotel. And then he was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was 79. May they rest in peace. Amen. It's hard to believe that this coming Thursday (March 3) will mark the 56th anniversary of his death. May he rest in peace. Amen.

Absolutely loved the show, but I wish the writers could have come up with a better angle than frumpy--to contrast her with Lucy. I saw a documentary that stated that Vivian had to stay 25 pounds heavier than Lucy, as stipulated in her contract. Maybe they could have portrayed Vivian as a glamorous, younger trophy wife of Fred--I don't think that would have detracted from Lucy. And her contrast to Fred would have made the show even funnier. I saw Lucy as a blonde in an early movie of her career--she looked great. There's some terrific photos online of the blonde Lucy. I wonder what most people would prefer--Lucy as a blonde or redhead?

In more than one book, I have read that Vivian proclaimed William should've portrayed her grandfather instead of her husband, and he declared her figure was like a bag of doorknobs...OUCH!!! She allegedly called him "the old drunk", while he sniped back referring to her as "the old cunning tart" (um, leaving out several letters...) 😱

The age gap between couples was not as important back in the 50s as it is in society now. There were always plenty of May-December marriages, and still are, just not as common. An older man with a younger woman wasn’t as frowned upon then as it is now. It was a bit unusual, but not out of the ordinary. As for Vivian Vance and William Frawley, theirs was a relationship that was built on hate from the start, even to the point of sabotaging each other.

As hard as they tried, Vivian was hardly unattractive on the show. It was very evident she was much younger than William. It was Lucille Ball, according to her daughter Luci Arnaz who was jealous of Vivian’s good looks and style and wasn’t having any of it. She made sure and did her best that she would not be upstaged and made sure Vivian played Ethel as frumpy as possible. Although the women became good friends, this created some resentment on Vivian’s part. It didn’t help that both William and Vivian despised each other.

Desi and Lucy mourned William Frawley death, they both loved him dearly and was great friends of his. even though Desi and Lucy was good friends with both William and Vivian, it put a strand on their relationship with the two. I liked William on I Love Lucy and My Three Sons and it wasn't just drinking he had to deal with the way some people treated him also played a part in how he behaved. Vivian made slick remark to Lucy and William heard some of them which put a bad taste in his mouth about Vivian. At that age William ego was already fragile Lucy even said that the media made it look like William and Vivian really hated each other but they didn't it wasn't that big of a deal plus William and Vivian had similar up bringing, they even thought alike, they both had parents that didn't like showbiz. Plus William was 30 years older than Vivian he was set in his ways and what makes people think that older and younger people could get along and than have to act as husband and wife on a tv show. And even though Vivian Vance was pretty and a good actress she had problem to, she talked about William on the set of I Love Lucy too and no matter what someone did to u that don't mean that you have to celebrate their death. THAT'S JUST HEARTLESS. Plus Lucy had to wait until Vivian was out of town just so she could have William on her show The Lucy Show and a month after William stared on the show, he died alone in his apartment he shared with his sister.

I think if Vance kept her mouth shut I think Frawley would not been upset with her.

Did Vivian actually break out champagne in celebration? Or is that part made-up to further push a story?

It was true but the toast was exaggerated out of proportion. She was celebrating if you want to call it that, a great comedian had passed and was celebrating his life as a professional performer.

This is lazy reporting. The "feud" between Viv & Bill was when he overheard Viv stating how MUCH older his character was. Vivian was NOT "ugly" But, DID have to appear more "frumpy" than the star Lucille Ball. The therapy was NOT just because of Bill, but also of her then abusive husband as well. I'm also NOT sure a spin off series would have worked. The I Love Lucy show was a once in a lifetime ensemble cast despite the (behind the scenes DRAMA) A side note Barbara Pepper was to play Ethel. Once Bill was secured, Desi didn't want to have to deal w/ 2 alcoholics! Funny, as Desi was the lead Alcoholic! You know he had ties to Bacardi Rum (4 real though!)

Remember when Lucy found the wedding certificate and Ricky's last name was mispelled and listed as Bicardi and she and Ricky traveled to Connecticut to have their vows renewed.....one of my favorite episodes.👍👍👍👍👍👍

Desi's great grandfather was one of the founders. Just because of that doesn't necessarily mean that was the reason for Desi becoming an alcoholic.

I think this feud is as exaggerated as Joan and Bette. I'm sure Vivian Vance knew the chemistry and magic of I Love Lucy would be lost if Fred were younger and Ethel were more svelte. I've heard the "champagne" story before. If it's true I'm deeply disappointed in Vivian.
