Lucy refused to do The Lucy Show WITHOUT Vivian. They were co-stars for 3 seasons (almost 90 eps). Viv finally got to shed her Ethel character. Her condition for doing the show was that her character's name be Vivian. After she left, Lucy considered ending the show but she continued, completely overhauling the setting & situation, removing the children & having Lucy move to an apartment in L.A. Viv appeared as a guest 3 more times and appeared as a guest on Here's Lucy and on Lucy's TV special, "Lucy Calls the President", as different characters each time, but always with the name, "Vivian". Her last name changed with each character, of course, just as Lucy's did.

The inside story about William Frawley is he auditioned for the role and Desi Arnaz ( a brilliant businessman who pioneered the 3 camera system used today - before then most , if not all shows used the one camera - shot from the middle - system. Anyway, Desi told Bill he would hire him to play Fred.. Mr. Frawley had serious alcohol problem and Desi said you stop drinking .PERIOD. It'll kill you and before that happens you could end up dead. Bill Frawley years later in an interview credited Desi & Lucy with reviving his stalled career .But more importantly saving him from the ruination of alcohol.

Bill Frawley and Vivian Vance were professional enough to put "their personal differences aside" when they're on the job. (This includes public appearances.) I heard that there was a clause in both of their contracts, that if one of them left the show, the other one would also go. 🤔 if that was true, that would also make them mutually dependent on each other for job security while working for Desilu.

Frawley was a reflection for how the culture was back in his days, back in the 50s Men are expected to go out and earn a living, women are expected to stay home, raise kids, and run a household. Vance represented everything he didn't like at the time she was a woman, working, not managing a house. Vance was already at a disadvantage with Frawley, and Lucy it seems. If Vance had not said what she did, eventually Frawley wouldn't have liked her. I do love the show, they are a reflective of times back then. Things were notoriously chauvinistic. Lucy doing so well on the show probably took a lot of men by surprise. Usually male leads got the big spots. The one thing I will credit Frawley and Vance for is their professionalism. If you didn't know about William and Vivian's feud you probably wouldn't have believed they didn't like each other.

I had no idea they hated each other back then. They hid it well on screen. I found out later about how they hated each other. I came home from middle school every day, had a bowl of cereal for a snack before going out to play. While eating that cereal, my mom and I would watch "I Love Lucy." I always missed the first 10 minutes since it started just before I got home from school. But we always watched it to the end before I went outside. I think Vivian Vance was angry about her contract stipulations and took it out on William Frawley on the first day of shooting. Her stipulations called for her to be deliberately unflattering to herself. She had to maintain a weight heavier than Lucille Ball's. On top of that they stuck her in a marriage with a man 22 years her senior So on the first day of shooting she blurted out: "Nobody is going to believe I'm married to that old coot!" Of course it hurt Frawley's feelings and he never forgave her. It's a shame the two of them couldn't put that stuff aside and at least be civil to one another. The Fred and Ethel characters added a lot of enjoyment to the show. Had the show been just Lucy and Ricky I doubt CBS would would have invited them back for a second season.

I think both Vivian and William Frawley had problems. But were fabulous on the show. Vivian's irritability about Frawley's age was weird in that she was hired last. Why take the role if you are going to bitch about your co-star and make such a nasty statement about him right off the bat . Also, Vivian was supposed to play his wife and the Mertz's were to supposed to be less classy than the Riccardo's. So yes, Vivian was not to look so much younger according to her role as his wife, I heard she bitched about some stipulations about her dressing etc. Again, why take the role? The appearance of both as an older couple worked very well and made the total presentation great. So Vivian was not "stuck in the role" - she took it, nobody forced her. And if it weren't for I Love Lucy I am sure we would not even know the name Vivian Vance. (Actually I think underneath she carried some what of a victim personna due to her traumatic upbringing.)

It wasn't in her contract that she had to maintain a weight heavier to Lucille Ball's. I'm not saying Lucille wasn't threatened by Vivian's attractiveness, but how she looked wasn't in her CONTRACT. In fact, once Ball saw that Vivian was no threat, Ethel's character was allowed to be less frumpy, to dress better, to look more her age, and to be more glamorous. By that time, the viewing audience had accepted Fred & Ethel as a couple so that aspect didn't need to be made believable by Vivian's unflattering makeup, homely costumes, & a bad perm & old lady haircut.

  • @DonnaBrooks

Vivian didn't "take it out" on Frawley. Frawley had a reputation for being belligerent with co-stars! He was even fired from a project for threatening, then punching, the star. Frawley overheard Vivian complain once about having to appear dowdy as Ethel so people would believe she was married to an old coot & he held a grudge about that for the rest of his life.

@@harperstacey9604 Not much is known about Vivian's first two marriages (to Joseph Shearer Danneck and George Koch). Danneck died a couple of years after the marriage ended -- he was killed in a shoot out with a business partner in Detroit. Vivian told her sisters to not discuss the marriages and presented Phil Ober as her "first" husband. Ober was also the abusive husband. Vivian often came to work with bruises from his beatings, according to makeup artist Hal King. He was very possessive and tried to sabotage Vivian's friendships. When they met, both Phil and Vivian were married to other people, and their liaison became gossip fodder in New York (this was around 1940). Vivian's last husband, literary agent John Dodds, was rather openly gay but not abusive.
