I grew up during the civil rights movement Blacks didn't have access to the same education as,white students. I remember one black child saying how thrilled he was to have a new textbook..before that they were given old worn out text books. So I think John Wayne's comments meant whites should be in charge until Blacks had the opportunity to better themselves with a good education.

Woody Strode was a very good actor but he never got a lead role. He played Wayne's servant, and he played a racist role in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. No one made him do that. He got paid well for it. Hollywood as a whole was racist for many years. As for being anti-homosexual, That is not a bad thing because it is sickening. We should not treat anyone bad but a person never has to say it is okay.

Lew Wasserman was Jimmy Stewart's agent for decades. Stewart was raised in Pennsylvania not Indiana. Stewart objected to the "uncle remis"-ish costume that was assigned to Woody Strobe (verbatim from one of his interviews). Stewart did not rat out Hollywood Communists to Hoover. James M. Stewart entered the Army as a Private and retired as a Brigadier General. He founded several companies (NetJets, for one) and worked for conservation and environmental causes. You really need to do some homework before tarnishing someone's good name.

Frawley, for whatever intolerance he may have displayed (and, since he was remembered as a moody, irascible drunk, it might have been a great deal) had Desi Arnaz (a man he greatly admired) as a pallbearer. Most people aren't prejudiced against their friends (which might be a start).

That’s pretty thin to put it mildly. He was very Conservative- and proudly so - and Henry Fonda was a lifelong friend despite being very Liberal and proudly so. I once laughed at a racist joke someone told. I didn't know it was racist, but someone schooled me in no uncertain terms that it was, and that me laughing was hurtful. I apologized and learned something. Now if I become famous, 70 years from now someone will recall that I laughed at a joke and condemn me.

No one was ever burned at the stakes in Salem, Mass.

I was raised in a large city in England. 280-300,000 people. When i was growing up in the Seventies, you could walk around on a busy Saturday afternoon and not see a single person of any ethnicity different from your own. It was a roughish, but pleasent place to grow up. Scroll on to 2018 when i returned for the first time for 36 years....it had lost its vibe, shops , town centre....and as for the demographic change...jeeeez. The place looked so bad i very nearly cried. Memories tarnished. Won't be going back home anymore. I don't care what anyone says...it was better back when i was growing up.

It's an undisputed fact that John Wayne had to be physically restrained as he was attempting to go on stage and hurt Sacheen Littlefeather when she stood in for Marlon Brando as he declined the Oscar win because of Hollywood's portrayal of Native Americans. Hey, Walter Brennan had something happen in his life that may account for his strange behavior. He was in WW! and was sprayed with some kind of purple gas and after that he was never the same. People said he was quiet, reserved and intelligent before the incident.

This is Bullsh*t I’ve read interviews with Woody Strode and he said he was getting close to Stewart when John Ford embarrassed Stewart by accusing him of racism, as a means of keeping the 2 actors from getting too friendly. He Did Not call James Stewart racist.

Thank you! I second that emotion. Although I get a TINY bit peeved [I'm too old to hold on to frustration from a million years ago] when Mantan Morland appears in a 1940s movie, I simply CAN'T STAND today's trash. From what I've noticed when I see a movie of today advertised, Hollywood feels compelled to keep pace with every Godd*mned new "identity" invented. There are now 72 (or 76) so-called "different" gender identities [actually, there are only TWO. Chromosomes ain't woke], and I wouldn't be surprised if Hollywood creates a movie featuring ALL 72. I never view ANY of them. In the evening, my wife and I have been trying to get through all the 4-star [IMBD-rated] 1940s. After that, we're gonna check out all the 3-star 1940s movies. Then we're going to watch the 1950s movies. A certain ideology [seems like a RELIGION!!] is ruining the culture. One wonders if we'll ever recover.

Jimmy Stewart wasn't racist, John Ford was trying to instigate something that wasn't there on the set of the Man who Shot Liberty Valance, which caused discomfort. He used the same technique on John Wayne, goading him about never fighting in WWII.

Yes, norms change, but it is fair to take a closer look at the actors of the past and adjust your views of them. We do have people that have overly romanticized such actors as Stewart and Wayne and say ridiculous things like "why can't there be people today like them"? I will enjoy a John Wayne movie, but I've known for a while that he was a s**t human being, racist as all get out, and turning in colleagues during McCarthyism. It is like people that refuse to believe in any history that doesn't show America was "perfect".

I read that interview when it came out--the guy was just a plain talker, and gave his honest--and not at all unreasonable or malicious--opinion. I have read the Playboy interview many times. Guess what.....THATS DIRECT RACISM. Since ‘Facts Verse’ couldn’t get James Stewart’s birth place correct, I’m not believing anything else in this Woke hit piece on actors from decades ago who can’t defend themselves.

As a youth I enjoyed the stars of that time, as a child I wondered when a star's visit I was not allowed to get close enough for an autograph. after turning 15 I learned why.1951 was the year.

As almost everyone has said, it's ridiculous to judge people from 80 and even 90 years ago by today's social norms and knowledge. It turns out, the claims about James Stewart aren't even true. John Wayne's remarks in that interview, on the other hand, were woefully ignorant, even by the standards of 1971. There were overwhelmingly large numbers of highly educated black people. But most of this is akin to people who say that Mark Twain, born in Mississippi in 1835, was a racist. In 2022, sure, In his time, he was almost as anti-racist as he could get. People just don't understand that these are social ideas and they change over time. Let's hope that, a hundred years in the future, the best attitudes of our time are not considered woefully ignorant and racist by future generations that also do not understand the nature of history and social change.

John Wayne said is that their are far to few blacks in acting and the movie industry's schools so the level of talent and numbers are just a fraction of that to the whites, and untill that changes the whiles will continue to dominate because of the ratio of blacks to whites attending film and acting Colleges.

What a badly informed hatchet job on Jimmy Stewart. In Stewart's time Hollywood was almost totally run by Jewish men. And Kirk Douglas, Walther Mathau and many more famous actors of the time said, many times in public, that these powerful Jewish men could not be trusted. But Douglas and Mathau were Jewish themselves so could not be accused of antisemitism. As for Woody Strode, he mentions in his autobiography that over the course of a few movies he made with Jimmy Stewart, he found the man to be a 'kind and gentle soul'. On the other hand, Strode thought that both John Ford and John Wayne were not overly fond of black men and were very loud in making their feelings known.

When they would drive by Jimmy Stewart's home he would come out and greet the tourist. Talk with they, give autographs and take pictures with them. Stewart grew up in Indiana, Pennsylvania, nort of Pittsburgh. My grandparents knew him.

A young background actor once showed me caricatures of Hollywood stars. He could identify all but one--a cowboy. He said, "As far as I'm concerned, he's just a cowboy." I told him ask anyone over 40 on this set to name an American cowboy. I guarantee you they will all say, "John Wayne."

@@lechat8533 It's been a while, so I may have difficulty remembering. Likely the fact that young Europeans may not recognize John Wayne, but he is an icon. And though one can't excuse his racist remarks, I do understand that he is a product of his time and upbringing.

@@tonyyoung3985 All the people that I know, younger and older ones, are well aware of who John Wayne was, even though Western Movies aren`t a preferred genre in this day and age. John Wayne was just a man, not God, and we human beings are not flawless, quite the opposite. For people who don`t take into account what generation and country John Wayne belonged to, it has always been easy to judge and condemn people for their opinions and beliefs. I`m not surprised that John disliked certain minorities. He was born 116 years ago, in an environment and time that were very different from those of today. He played very traditional and conservative characters, which, by today`s standards, are quite sexist and controversial. But when we watch his movies we put everything into perspective. As soon as we imagine him in his 20th-century outfit, we toss our "filters" aside and begin to judge his beliefs and behavior by today`s standards, which is absurd. Without controversy, the icon John Wayne wouldn`t exist. It`s easier for me to imagine a cigarette-smoking John Wayne disliking Jews and black people than him changing diapers, washing the dishes, dusting, hoovering, and accepting women as his equals.

I think the comments about Jimmy Stewart maybe rumors. I knew a black man who worked with Jimmy Stewart on the set. He told me that he was very nice to him. This was in the 1970s. Maybe his views changed with time, or maybe he was just nice to him personally..

Many racists were polite to black people on an individual level, while still believing in white supremacy. Hitler treated Jesse Owens very well.

This is James Stewart's account of what happened on the set of The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance; and by the way, he was from the town of Indiana, PA, where I am told there is an airport named after him, not from a small town in the State of Indiana.

Yes there is an airport named after him and a statue in his honor. My wife and I happened to be there when he passed away and they had the statue draped in black ribbon. My maternal grandparents are from Indiana, PA and they told me a long time ago that Jimmy Stewart's father owned a hardware store in town. It's a nice small college town, home to Indiana University of Pennsylvania

Woody Strode might not have cared for Stewart, but became good friends with Lee Marvin on The Man That Shot Liberty Valance. They later were in The Professionals together. They almost got arrested when while drunk used a bow and arrows to shoot out lights on a sign.
