Why V4 engines are so rare and which cars use them - Mike's Mechanics

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The V4 engine is such a rare layout in a road car, being found predominantly instead in motorcycles.
Mike has investigated how the V4 engine works and why it is so rare, as well as researching the ultimate use of this rare engine, the Porsche 919 Hybrid LMP1 car. 720bhp from a four-cylinder engine?
We'll take that any day.

    kevin paul halliday Ducati and Aprilia are already using V-4 engines in there super sport motorcycles. Technology is so advanced that more cylinders outweigh displacement. To compete with four cylinders need a four-cylinder. The same thing goes with a 90° V6! I like my 90° V twin 1299 S Panigale at the race track! 1199 is the maximum displacement for a V twin and it cannot compete with the four-cylinder 1000cc because of technology! The twins are allowed extra 200cc in competition races.

    It was mostly about the hybrid option. LMP1-H is all about consumption, and even more so (though it doesn't get talked about a lot), pit deltas... which in a strange way, boils down to tire wear. BECAUSE you can't re-tire and refuel at the same time, the cars have evolved to run the tires for as many stints as possible, and are designed around getting the most even tire wear possible across the two axles, shifting weight forward (~50/50), and in Porsche's case, putting less power through the rears and more through the front (hybrid is all front, ICE is all rear). Between that, and it being extremely hard to get an 8 MJ car down to the weight minimums, they opted for a super compact and lightweight engine pushed very far forward in the wheelbase: www.racedepartment.com/attachments/2015-porsche-919-hybrid-power-systems-cutaway-jpg.90143/

    I might sound like a know it all but the Lancia engine is a VR 4 not a V4, as the VW Golf has a VR 6 not a V6 or the Bugatti Veyron having a VVR 16 not a W16 (W16 is the engine name not the type). One last note, the in line 4 also has complete balance of primary forces and the momentum, so this isn't really a benefit of the V4. However, the even smaller crankshaft on the V4 is less flexibel, wich is not only usefull against torsional vibtations but also is great for high torque applications, since you don't have to calculate in those tortional variations.

  • @mandernachluca3774

    @mandernachluca3774

    5 жыл бұрын

    @Suprav Pokharel No, it is actually a sheme not just a name. You see, VW did also build VR 5 engines as well as Honda did but they called it a V5. VW also produced a VVR 8, wich is the basus for the Bugatti engine (VW calls it the W8). The VR engine was pretty much invented by Lancia, it bases on a Lancia patent wich allows V engines to have loe cylinder bank angles. The germans pretty much "just" made it popular. Lancia is seen as the first to produce the VR engine type for production cars. A W ebgine type was used by bugatti befor VW took them over, this engine type really is just 2 V8 welded into a sort of half radial engine. However, i do see why you are confused, the german wikipedia side displays the deginition for a VR engine in general but the english translation somehow just covers VWs VR engines and mentions Lancia as a side note.

  • @mandernachluca3774

    @mandernachluca3774

    5 жыл бұрын

    @Suprav Pokharel Well, every narrow angle V engine with a single cylinderhead is a VR engine, the description does not only go for VW engines, the ariès engine is also a VR engine in german, it pretty much means "V-Reihe", wich means as much as narrow angle - in line engine, so every narrow angle engine with a one cylinder head and offset cylinders is a VR. The lenght difference of a crankshaft is never insignificant, as well as the lenght of the camshaft, that and the low center of gravity are the reason why we see so many V6 engines and why in line 8 cylinder engines died out. The crankshaft can bend to a degree due to torsional strain, wich has to be compansated for in the engine design, the shorter the crankshaft and camshaft, the less of a concern it is. Formula 1 V10 and V12 at the time had to consider this, because the timing of the camshaft varies with the rpm (due to the inertia of the valves resisting to a sudden accelleration, wich increases with rpm), this by the way contributes to the rough idle and the lower rpm limit.

  • @mandernachluca3774

    @mandernachluca3774

    5 жыл бұрын

    @Suprav Pokharel VR is not only used for Volkswagen that's plain false, it is per definition the german transcription of a norrow angle v engine, of wich the cylinders are in a row. Torsional strain is a function of the torsional force (momentum) acting apon the crankshaft and the geometrical dimensions of the crankshaft. The reason why the Moto GP now uses for the most part V4 engines is because of the lower center of gravity, not the conpactness or density. Wikipedia literally says it right there: www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/VR-Motor&ved=2ahUKEwiY_7GplLvgAhXD_KQKHZiiAi0QFjAEegQIDhAY&usg=AOvVaw0yhp3oJIg6l6ARrbib_65M&cshid=1550145179377 Other than that, pretty much any book about engines says the same thing. Also, you said that V10 are superior to V12 engines, i beg to differ, it is not for nothing, that the most powerful NA F1 engines were V12s.

    @@mandernachluca3774 the W16 is, in fact, a W-style engine because it really is just two V8s slapped together. It's not a VVR, but because it's a Volkswagen it is sometimes called a WR16

    @@effyeadude No, in fact not. 2 V8 engines would have 4 cylinderheads, because they are not narrow angle V (VR) engines. The Bugatti engine is falsly advertised as a W16 engine, as the VW VVR 8 is falsely advertised as a W8 or the VW VR5 is falsely advertised as a V5. The difference is the angle, if it is so narrow that you can build one cylinderhead for 2 cylinder rows, it is a VR engine. Bugatti had ones true W 18 engine, this thing had 3 rcylinder rows of wich every row had its independent cylinderhead.

    I would love to see a V4 in a new hot hatch or somthing, I don't see where there considered to expensive to manufacture? V6 engines are everywhere... And we'll it should be cheaper to build than a v6? I think it would be a real selling point the car to have status on a new hot hatch or whatever, could you imagine what the aftermarket and tuners could do with a state of the art DOHC 90° 2.5L V4 twin turbo! They would be ringing 800+hp daily out of them, It may be a new holy Grail engine in the likes of 2jz & rb32's possibly. Are you listening Japan??

    I've long been thinking that Subaru should replace it's boxer engines with 90 degree V4s... no additional complexity (arguably less if they used only 2 shared crankpins as opposed to the 4 they have now), not any longer front-to-back, and only a slight COG disadvantage. But they'd be much easier to service (pull engine for spark plug changes???), allow for much narrower/stiffer frames, and they wouldn't suffer from oil starvation as they do now.

    Soviet ZAZ (Soviet versions of Fiat 600 and NSU Prinz) used MeMZ V4 engines. At first they were really small ones but later they were built bulkier and heavier, same time the engines were slow and needed special balance system. MeMZ engines were used on light LuAZ jeeps too. SAAB used Ford Taunus engines and those were really small but powerful.

    Ford did two V4’s, the 1.6 ‘Cologne’ (which was also sold to SAAB for the 96 and Sonnet) used in Taunus and German Transits and the 2.0 used in Corsairs and UK Transits as well as the Capri. Of course the best known V4’s have a 180 degree V-angle and were used by VW extensively, Subaru and now also Porsche.
