    I'd like to clarify that the Subaru F1 engine came before Subaru's dominant run in the World Rally Championship in the 1990s. The way the video was laid out made it seem the other way around. What other crazy engines would you add to the list? 👀

    Developed for Coloni F1 by Motori Moderni, the engine was under funded and under-developed. Subaru was brought in and bought the naming rights for the engine. Subaru played no real role in it's development. Subaru simply provided money to MM. The engine continued to be under-developed and the chassis it was in was terrible.

    As a VR6 expert. Can tell you that the VR5 was made for those countries that insurance amount is based on your engines size. Hence why only a handful of counties had it. It was also short lived because soon after the laws changed. The power had nothing to do with it because Volkswagen was still using the 1.8t at the time that made more power and came in base model cars. The VR6 was designed to be a diesel.

  • @haku1155

    @haku1155

    If I remember correctly, both the base versions of 2.3L VR 5 and the 1.8T make the same HP and are only used in the GTI Model. There is a 150HP version for both and then the "upgraded" version with 170HP in the VR5 and 180HP in the 1.8T for the 25 year anniversary Golf Mk4 GTI. The 1.8T would just go a lot faster because the max torque range is higher in the turbo engine. The 2.3L would Rev higher and deliver less torque. The VR5 has some very unique and in my humble opinion pretty awesome sound and is beloved and hated by the VW following here in germany depending who you ask. It just doesn't really deliver as well as the 1.8T feeling wise. There is a saying about the VR5: You can hear it for a long time and you can see it for a long time.

Much more interesting is the Polo 9N3 with the 1.9TDI and 130HP. That engine has lots of potential while being safely and easily upgradeable to almost 1.8T levels of power and stunning 300+ Nm of torque.

Electricity covers low end torque then put drag on the motor at high rpm to charge the battery because you want to rev an engine out but you don’t necessarily need 400hp in a 55mph corner. Anyone could easily make this today it would be the perfect drivers car and cost $1.3 mil and of course no one would buy it LoL.

    The flat twelve could have been great in a dragster (albeit larger). In theory it is the most balanced engine there is. Perfect primary and secondary balance, with almost zero chassis stress since every force cancels out. With DOHC heads, triple the displacement, nitro gas and a TF level supercharger pushing the same boost psi as now, you’d have an engine that revs way higher, flows air better, has more displacement, and will sound better. With that much performance headroom, 13k hp would be viable and would last an entire event without the need for a total rebuild every run.

    What is important for acceleration and pulling power of the vehicle is the torque at the contactpatch between wheel and road. There are two ways of getting more pulling power at the road (which can be combined of course): 1.) increase the torque at the crankshaft ( = nominal torque of the engine), OR 2.) raise the rpm at which the torque is delivered. Why? Simply because the same torque at a higher rpm of the engine implies that a lower gearing and thus a higher multiplication of the torque in the transmission from engine to road can be used. So in the end it is the POWER (torque x rpm) and not the nominal torque of the engine that determines how hard it actually pulls on the road!

    This “2 Hayabusa engines stuck together” thing is such a misnomer. It’s a different block, different crank… Might as well just say “this guy made a custom block/bottom end and put Hayabusa cylinder heads on it.”

    your saying a 2.7L V8 is insane when it only makes 440 hp the Ford 2.3L Lima i4 can push the same numbers with only 20 ibs of boost and an ecu tune, for less than half the price

    8:00 They had very good reason for doing so. The staggered cylinders allowed 5 cylinders in the normal length of a 4. It isn't rocket science. And 9 years was a decent run, also. Too much dissing going on.

    It's wild that if you go from a boxer 6 to any other flat configured cylinder count it becomes the most unreliable engine ever.

    The Hayabusa was never competitive. Back in 99 I would race the GTO class on my GSXR600 running against Hayabusa bikes. At Moroso Raceway I would run laps on them. They were 550 pounds bikes against a 390lb 600. They never had a chance.
