Why Unity Is The Church's Greatest Calling | N.T. Wright Online

If you had to identify one theme that Paul writes about in every one of his letters, what would it be? Prof. Wright says ‘unity’ is Paul’s most common theme by far.
How did Jesus and Paul interpret the imperative to Church Unity? How do we know? In this video, Prof. Wright explains why unity is Paul’s central message, the Church’s vocation, and what New Creation is all about.
We discuss unity in many N.T. Wright Online courses. One of them, Ethnicity, Justice, and the People of God is on sale right now for $49.99. Link in the video to enrol.

    1. "...that all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me." (John 17:21) 2. "All these were steadfastly continuing in one accord in prayer, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers." (Acts 1:14) 3. "I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought." (1 Corinthians 1:10) Amen, people?

As I reconsider the new creation that I have been born into. And further the new heavens and earth that I will be part of !! ▪︎I realise that I have to peel away some blockage of theology that was well ingrained in me. A theology that considers itself as well grounded but had gaps to be filled !! Thank you Bishop Wright for joining the dots !!

Great, great message! Because unity and church discipline of false teachers appear to be contradictions in scripture, many seem confused about how hard to work toward unity. It just seems easier to only meet with people who have the same theology as us. Thanks for posting this!

Amazing, this is so good and as you can see Pope Francis is not only doing that with Christians but across the Abrahamic brothers those who are justified by Faith and ultimately all will follow the SON OF GOD Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior!!!!!!!!

so good. :) 4:40 it's not about escaping creation it's about redeeming creation and the point in romans is that those who are justified by faith those who believe in jesus those who know in the present that their sins are forgiven and so they're going to be raised from the dead to be part of that new creation they must already form the single family which anticipates god's final great deed of bringing all creation together that's the vocation of the church... 9:18 that then is the vocation of the church... to model in advance the coming together of all creation ... to model in advance that harmony that mutual reconciliation that coming together on a new basis which is what ultimately we are told the new creation will be all about

So are we called to disunity?

  • @flematicoreformandose5046

Mr Wright I appreciate your devotion to t'he scripture and your mention of ecclesial unity. But each denomination has its own definition of what they mean by "unity." Although what unites them to some children of God, is to meet in temples where God does not live, perhaps sing a hymn and little else. It is something like attending a social club and paying a fee. If Jesus the Anointed had ordered us to build basilicas, cathedrals and all kinds of temples we would be lost. But if this were not the case, then the interest of the Mighty One is focused on the temple, which are holy people, and not on walls, stones, cement, roofs, etc. But it seems that we are in a virtual reality adulterated by our own expectations.

So let's put away what divides the ekklesia. The apostle Paul said let there be no fivision among you. None. So lets put away everything that dovides .... no more denominations .... let's follow the example in the new testament. We can meet with the brothers and sisters in the Lord in our own local area without needing a name to meet under or a particular building to meet in. Unity among us is definitely available and imperative for the honor of Jesus.

If I wanted to find more scholars who take this view, the grand narrative from Adam->Abraham->Jesus->international church Where might I look? Is there a name for the position? It’s not the new perspective on Paul although I think that’s related and helpful Covenant something? Something that is very focused on the promise to Abraham, Jesus being Abraham’s seed, believers in Christ being Abraham’s seed Name for that position?

We are not aware of a particular name of this lens from which to view the story the Bible is telling--though 'grand narrative' might be a good choice! The nature of academic research lends itself to focus on a narrower specialty (i.e., Pauline Theology) and, thus, many don't engage the whole biblical narrative. It could be useful to have a look at the works of Richard Middleton or Richard Hays.

Labels and labels only mean speak for a limited group. Piecing together the labels mean I arrive at the point where labels will no longer matter. YEC, OEC, Red Letter Only, KJV Only, Good News Verson Only (though I hope there are none of these proponents). I think it's high time to reduce the labels to a select few so all others are dismissed and left out of historical records. Labels only hurt,, they will never encourage people to check out the information for themselves.

Yes, in pursuing diversity and inclusivity and 'one-ness' it can be challenging to balance grace and truth or holiness and unity. Perhaps, one way forward might be as we pray the Spirit leads us to responsibile use of freedom to 'become all things to all people'.

Unity in Christ and God. John 15:1-4 (NIV): 15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me

All one and saved by the Messiah's cross - singled out to be a specific cross, Christ made to be a criminal though he wasn't found guilty of any crime. The modern Church has many divisions and lessons to learn. You cannot twist the words of the Bible to say something it is not.

Tell me, Bishop Wright, does unity in your eyes mean, people who think homosexuality is immoral and people who think the bible doesn't condemn it need to stop randomely substituting ideas into sentences and listen to their elders and betters? From the Windsor Report. And does it mean that married gay clergy must tell their bishops they are not sleeping together? That came forth from the Archbishop of Canterbury. I left the Episcopal Church and became a Lutheran. They know what a conscience is and think it is all important, and don't let it get in the way of unity! Lutheran denominations that cannot agree on whether the world was created in 7 days work together on such efforts as a world wide missionary movement. None of this lying, and corruption, and let people better than you tell you what to think, and it doesn't matter anyway, because, for instance, God gave us sexuality which is a very dangerous gift (Windsor Report). And, abortion is absolutely murder, and we always allow it. (Current position of the Episcopal Church, I assume that their elders and betters in England told them what to say.) Unlike you. Or did you leave the Church of England and forget to tell us. I believe that not too long ago you were one of two bishops who ran it. You're an excellent historian, not afraid to admit to what you don't like, but, you need to simply keep quiet on church unity. There is absolutely nothing you or the Church of England could ever do to advance Christianity, let alone Christian unity. You're in the process of bringing down your own Church AND the British monarchy. Young people in England have pretty much lost the ability to ever respect anything, growing up under the tutelage of the likes of you.
