Why Toni Kukoc is NOT a Hall of Famer [WHAT REALLY HAPPENED]

Спорт

Toni Kukoc won a host of awards in Europe before coming to the NBA at 25 years old. He eventually won 3 championships off the bench for the late ‘90’s Chicago Bulls. His relationship with the other Bulls started off rocky but they eventually respected each other by the end of the 1998 season. GM Jerry Krause coveted a young Kukoc as if he was the next Michael Jordan of the Bulls but he failed to live up to anything close to that lofty expectation. People might ask what happened to Toni Kukoc, how good was Toni Kukoc or wonder about Toni Kukoc Hall of Fame. This video answers all of those questions.
Kukoc was born in Yugoslavia in a town now called Split, Croatia. He was a natural at most sports he played but was a prodigy at basketball. The Bulls drafted Kukoc in 1990 in the second round but he did not come over until after the 1993 season. Once he arrived in Chicago Michael Jordan was already playing baseball. Kukoc quickly proved that he could come up big in clutch moments and that made for a contentious episode when Scottie Pippen refused to go into the final seconds of a playoff game in which Kukoc hit the game winning shot.
Once MJ returned to the Bulls Kukoc signed a massive deal and thrived as a sixth man. He is the last person to win Sixth Man of the Year and a championship in the same season. Kukoc finally got to be the number 1 option after the 1998 season but by then he was in his 30’s and the teams he led were some of the worst in the NBA. If Kukoc was drafted by a bad team in his prime things may have been different but he is still not in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He could get in based on his European resume alone and there’s still time for that to happen.

Kukoc is wayyy way more than his resume for sure, nice, humble, the very best of Bull's team player, never show off be it on and off the court. Fame and success never change him. He could have been even better, showing off more of his potential without Jordan, but that is imo.

To me and to many people I believe, he has much better talents than what Bulls asked hime to play, I just think, marketing wise, they can't have people outshined Jordan, and that is bullcrap. Kukoc received many awards except for this Naismith hof. They gave awards to many undeserved, like Yao Ming, for example, seriously??? Nothing against him, but he is way far behind Kukoc in terms of skills. Kukoc was made for any era. What killed him and few other good shooting wings was the ISO mid-range game. It's good, but if dude just a catch and shoot and baseline run player he easily would've been a top-10 scorer every year. Hell Stoyakovic was able to do it with a lesser inside and playmaking game. Think of Kukoc in that role with those handles

manu ochenta Wait, hold up. The focus was on size after Shaq? Mate, he was born into an era of dominant bigs. Jordan was very much the exception more than he was the rule. And now look at things... guys like Porzingas are barely allowed to post up, and bigs like KAT and Embiid shoot threes all day. Kukoc is more versatile than most bigs even today, with the right range. And Mark Price would be great today.

You know, when Jordan had a bad game in the finals against the Sonics he made an excuse about Father’s Day. When ex-Yugoslavian players were playing in the 90s their families were forced into a bloody civil war (probably the most significant since ww2 at that time). Friends and families were being murdered left and right in cold blood but, I don’t remember them ever complaining about it. The fact that they were able to play in the NBA during those times while being so far away from loved ones is a true testament to the heart inside of those people.

are you stupid, why would you compare the deaths of family and player emotions? Not everyone is as close to their father and everyone is affected by it differently. Jordans father was his shield, was with him to all previous finals game and he was very close to their father. Just because ex-Yugoslavian players families were involved in a bloodshed doesnt take away that his fathers death affected Michael Jordan mentally, you have also have a heart when you are affected by your fathers death. He still got teary eyed talking about him all these years later.

haad999 haad999 haad999 this reply is so bad that it doesn’t even deserve a response. Yes, both are tragic things. You clearly don’t understand like I do how hard it was to call someone on the phone after a game to find out your friend was murdered and not be able to go to his funeral. Those players lived with THAT for 10+ years when they were in the NBA. Lots of people died and lots of friendships and families were torn apart. It was a period of pure horror. Toni called his dad once to ask how things were and his dad told him that a neighbour was running around outside of his house with a gun trying to kill him while police were trying to contain him. I know you can’t put yourself in those shoes so I don’t expect you to understand.

Vlade Divac (LA Lakers), Zarko Paspalj (San Antonio) and Aleksandar Djordjevic (Boston) from Serbia. During 80es, they all were playing together in Yugoslavian National Team in late 80es, which is considered as the best NT in history of EU basketball. Some people are calling it the Yugoslavian Dream Team. All of them signed in NBA as the 1st contingent of players coming from EU. Later on came Sarunas Marculionis and Arvidas Sabonis from Lithuania. Detlef Schrempf was maybe the 1st Euro player in NBA, but he signed in from College basketball, so he was without EU basketball experience. In my opinion, those players were so dominant that even today they would wipe out the whole Europe's basketball. And I don't mean they should be in their primes. Nope. I mean that literally (of course, with exception of late Drazen Petrovic), if they could come to play as they are today, in their 50es, after maybe few months of training, they would still dominate Europe. That's how good they were. I would like to make yet another comparison... The Dream Team (US), without any second thought, was the best team which ever played on basketball fields. They've really easily conquered the Olympics 1992. But, it's worth to mention, in 1991. Yugoslavia as the state, thus Yugoslavian Dream Team, broke up. Although, the Dream Team was the best team ever composed, at Olympics 1992. in one match, by FIBA rules, I'm sure they wouldn't have such an easy job if they'd play vs. Yugoslavia. Believe me, I know, and I'm not joking, that match would be a tight one. And I can't even describe how sorry I am such spectacle never happened.

you are kidding. The 92 dream Team was the best team ever. i agree definetly. But you really think, the yugoslawian Team had a chance? c'mon. Just look at the role those yugos played in the NBA. Had anyone a status of any of the dream team players (except Lattner, who wasn't an NBA player at that time) Only Drazen had for a short time in New Jersey the status of a team leader. Kukoc (behind Pippen and Jordan in Chigago) was THE MVP of the World Cup in Argentina . The dream Team would be better on EVERY position Jordan > Petrovic Stockton/Magic > Djordjevic Pippen/Bird > Kukoc/Paspalj Malone/Barkley >> Radja Robinson/Ewing >> Divac/Vrankovic

@@bandana3570 You didn't understand my point. I'll try to explain in more details. The Dream Team is the best team ever gathered in the history of basketball (I could argue even in the history of sport in general). There's no doubt in that and I already stated that. So, we both agree. Jordan&co are all better individually than players from Yugoslavia. But, there's one important note to add into the calculation --- basketball is a team sport. You didn't think of the fact those players of Yugoslavia played and trained together since they were kids. In Europe, when they're younger, players are sorted in categories based on their age, and the best of them are chosen to play together in their national teams, through various younger selections. We have international tournaments for national teams based on age categories... U12, U13, U14, U15, U16, U17, U18, U19, U20... where "U" means "under", for certain years of age. So, all in all, players of that generation of Yugoslavian NT trained and played together, in dozens of matches through years. They know each other so well, they could play together with blind folds on their eyes. They know what each other thinks, without saying a word and their team work is impeccable. In 1987. I've watched all those players in Bormio, Italy, at the World Championship for juniors (category U19). They dominated and easily won the cup. On the other hand, The Dream Team players never played together. They've trained only for couple of months within preparations for the Olympics. Even if they are all super stars, unlike Yugoslavian players, they didn't learn to play together through years of junior selections. So, my point was... In one match (not best out of 7), under FIBA rules (there was few important differences regarding NBA rules), Yugoslavia would be eligible for making an upset. And I believe that with all my heart and knowledge. USA would still be the front runner, and chances for Yugoslavia to win it would be pretty small. But even so, they still would have a chance. At least the match would be more equal than any other at the tournament. Also, don't forget, it's a fact that not every time a better team wins. Sometimes even underdogs can make it. The sad part is we won't have a chance to know that. Well, maybe in some another dimension of existence? :)

I got your point. And i still remember me how excited i was i both matches at the Olympic against Croatia (I'm Croatian) and in 92 i was proud that Croatia was the only team, that lead in a match against the Dream Team. From our perspective at that time we could play with them . But if you watch both matches now without emotions, it's a clear thing. The matches were tight only for a few minutes. With Yugoslavia it would be only a few minutes more. Rađa and Vranković played. If Divac plays, one of them is on the bench. It's the same with Kukoč, Petrović. If Paspalj and Đorđević, are on the court, one of them is on the bench. The other Croatian guard Komazec played well, too. So I wouldn't say, it was a big leak Even if it was Yugoslavia and not Croatia at that time, the never played against such a team before. Yes, on the world cup, they destroyed the US team, but the college team😜

@@bandana3570 Yeah, we are both Croatians. I thought you're from US, because I wouldn't waste so much words to explain the system to you, but never mind... Petrović, Kukoč, Paspalj, Rađa, Divac was the usual starting line up in YU team. Rađa played as power forward. I was deep into basketball then. It was my No1 sport, but I don't watch it for decades. Basketball nowadays is like women's basketball during 80es. ;) Anyway, I think YU team would give US team much trouble. At least, it would definitely be something else, because all the teams at the Olympics didn't even bother to play seriously. Of all those players, only one, just one man gave his best, actually thinking he has a chance - Dražen Petrović. Everyone else were there just to take pictures with the Dream Team's players. Take that into account, also. And no, I don't care for Yugoslavia and it doesn't bother me that country fell apart. It was for the best. I'm just sorry, from a basketball fan perspective, that clash YU vs US never happened. But whatever. Cest la vie. Pozdrav iz ZD. ;)

I think this is what Tomi Saric meant (btw I'm from Hellas and witnessed Toni's accomplishments "live" back in the day). In general I find it hard to compare European players anymore ; greats like Dirk, Pau and Toni Parker made the 99% of their "club" careers in the NBA while priors like Drazen and Toni (Vlado Divac, Dino, Sarunas etc.) had to become top european stars first before they even got an opportunity in the NBA plus they were treated like nobodies at the first steps of this process. Also, older ones, like Galis, Dalipagic, Riva etc. only played in Europe either because the difference was huge or because they would not be able to participate in FIBA (national team) competitions if the yever played 1 second in the NBA. Ouri Nicolet every time they talk about the 1992 Olympics, they talk about both games. The first game how Jordan and Pippen defended him and how he adjusted the second game. I never saw a sports report which didn’t talk about both games. Plus your initial comment was about the Olympics, not about the Denver and NY games.

The racial animosity of Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan played a huge role in keeping Kukoc on the bench. In reality, he should have been the starting guard instead of Ron Harper. But Scottie was too butt hurt about his contract. His agent is 100% correct, he would have fared much better out west. Also, the Dream Team didn't humiliate Kukoc. He had a bad 1st game against them not realizing that Jordan and Pippen were seething with anger towards him and were going to double team him as much as possible. But, he played much better during the 2nd game (for the gold medal) with 16 points, 9 assists, and 5 rebounds.

Kukoc was on the bench, because they didn’t need him as a starter, he was their scoring threat coming off the bench. It had nothing to do that they wanted to keep him on the bench, the best players were always in the game at the end of the game and guess what Kukoc always was in the game in the 4th quarter when things mattered. The Bulls went small ball with Theo best player Rodman, Pippen, Kukoc, Harper and Jordan.

Wow, Phil Jackson made the decisions about the Bulls starting 5, not Pippen or Jordan. The best player in Europe was the sixth man in the Bull's lineup and yet Krause decided to pay him more than any other Bulls player ever. Kukoc had done exactly ZERO for the Bulls. This is a good example why Jordan and Pippen hated Krause and justifiably so. I would think we had found Jerry Krause's youtube account based on your comment if he wasn't dead.

@@captainsteve7817 Only an idiot thinks that Jordan didn't have any say in who was part of the starting five. The best player from Europe was relegated to sixth man in many cases because Jordan and Pippen were angry that Krause talked him up and paid him a lot of money (comparatively). There were plenty of other European players that also were relegated to the bench, Drazen Petrovic being a prime example that when they got their opportunity to start, they really blossomed. Krause made tons of moves to help the Bulls get better, including trading Oakley for Cartwright (Jordan was angry about that), drafting Pippen (an unknown) and Grant, hiring Phil Jackson, trading Perdue for Rodman, and drafting Kukoc. All moves that helped the Bulls win titles. But the Kukoc move especially irritated Pippen and Jordan because Kukoc is a white guy and he was being paid more than Pippen. They are both anti-white bigots. No matter how much they (and sycophant fans such as yourself) hated him, Krause was still the guy that built those championship teams.

International success alone get players in hall of fame. Oscar Schmidt never went to nba and he is in hall of fame. Toni Kukoc had much more success than Oscar. I think one of the reason why he is not in HOF is because of narrative. MJ playing with 2 hall of famer is not same as he playing with 3 in that three peat for his GOAT case. He is by far best player ever but I wouldnt be surprised if that is one of the reason holding Toni back. Btw Toni was not bad at defense as you keep saying, he was ok defender, he was just not on pair with those 3 defensive juggernauts. If He was allowed to show his true potential and had more freedom you would have seen that he is much better offensive player than Pippen. He had advantage over him in every single aspect of the game except athleticism. Talking of offensive part of the game ofc At that time in any other nba team he could have been the main player and easily get 20+points and 6-7 assists

One more thing - weak ??? Bad defense??? Guy was 6th Man of the Year and a very skilled player. Yao Ming is a HoF only because of the influence he brought to China by playing in the NBA. Toni definitively deserves to be a HoF.

Whatever the reasons, the Bulls & NBA are doing such a disservice and disrespect to such a legendary player on both sides of the Atlantic... with the retirement of his Bulls jersey (7), and Basketball Hall of Fame induction way overdue.

Had MJ given "the green light" (a simple acknowledgement of Toni's contribution would be enough. 12 points of Kerr, a fantastic human being, vs. Utah were given such hype, while Toni's 21 weren't even mentioned....) for Toni to be a Hall of Famer, Toni would have already been that. That's what it's all about. Rarely has such unjustice been done to anybody as it's been with the portrayal of Toni in the Last Dance. More space was given to Carmen Electra than Toni! But, that's America and I didn't expect anyrhing else. Toni is the most talented European player of all time, with only Luka Dončić as a legimtimate comparison. Toni had more talent and was more complete than european HOFAMERS Divac, Marculionis, Radja (who I love) and Nowitzki, put together.

Kukoc was ahead of his time, played for a stacked team where he had to come off of the bench, and was never really used correctly. He was a 6'11 point forward with mad passing skills, sweet handles, a nice shot, and various different moves. He could average 20/7/7 easily if he was the main guy on a team that knew how to use him. If played in today's league he'd be a bonafide superstar. Krause was right to covet this guy; it's just a shame that no one seemed to know how to use him. He needed the ball in his hands as a point forward.
