Nicknamed "the White Magic", "the Spider from Split", "the Pink Panther", "the Waiter", and "the Croatian Sensation", Toni Kukoč was one of the first established European stars to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award in 1996.
Kukoč was renowned for his versatility and passing ability; although his natural position was small forward, he played all five positions on the court with prowess and demonstrated court vision and an outside shooting touch that were seldom found in players of his height. Together with Vassilis Spanoulis, they are the only players in history to achieve the EuroLeague Final Four MVP honor on three occasions. He was elected to the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2017.
After being drafted by the NBA's Chicago Bulls in 1990, Kukoč continued to play in Europe, until finally reporting to the Bulls in 1993, when the team had just finished its first three-peat and had lost Michael Jordan to retirement. Although disappointed that he could not play with Jordan, Kukoč made his NBA debut on November 5, 1993.
The 6'11" (2.11 m) Kukoč came off the bench in 1993-94 behind small forward Scottie Pippen and power forward Horace Grant, though Kukoč could play shooting guard and center as well. On January 21, 1994, in a game against the Indiana Pacers, Reggie Miller made a mid-range jumper with 0.8 seconds remaining to give the Pacers a 95-93 lead. Scottie Pippen inbounded the ball to Kukoc, who hit a three-point jumper at the buzzer to give the Bulls the win, 96-95. Kukoč put up a solid rookie season, averaging double-digit scoring and earning a berth on the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.
On May 13, 1994, at the end of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, the Bulls and the New York Knicks were tied at 102 with 1.8 seconds left. Bulls coach Phil Jackson designed the last play for Kukoč, with Scottie Pippen charged with inbounding the basketball. Pippen was so angered by Jackson's decision to not let him take the potential game-winner that he refused to leave the bench and re-enter the game when the timeout was over. Kukoč did hit the game-winner, a 23-foot fadeaway jumper at the buzzer, though the Bulls eventually lost the series in seven games.
After Grant left in the offseason, Kukoč moved into the starting lineup and finished the 1994-95 season second on the Bulls in scoring, rebounds and assists, behind Pippen. Furthermore, Michael Jordan would return to the Bulls in March, fulfilling Kukoč's wish to play alongside him.
For the 1995-96 season, the Bulls were bolstered by both Jordan's return to full form and the offseason acquisition of exceptional rebounder Dennis Rodman. With Pippen still at small forward, coach Phil Jackson saw it best to have Kukoč continue to be a bench player. Kukoč was third on the team in scoring (behind Jordan and Pippen) and was rewarded for his efforts with the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award. He also assisted the Bulls to a 25-game turnaround and the best record in league history at the time at 72-10 (later surpassed by the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors), as well as the fourth championship in team history. Kukoč was the 4th and is currently the last player to win the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award and the NBA title in the same year having joined Kevin McHale, Bill Walton, and Bobby Jones in accomplishing that feat.
In 1997 and 1998, Kukoč again came off the bench as sixth man as the Bulls won their fifth and sixth NBA titles. Once again, he was the team's third-leading scorer.

Probably the most underrated Bulls player ever.....He contributed quite a lot to the Bulls 🏆 years....And shame on the Bulls for not retiring his jersey after 7 yrs playing with them 😧😲

Underrated because during their 2nd 3-peat he was their 6th man and only started if Pippen, Longley, Rodman, or Harper were hurt (or if Rodman was suspended lol)

Upravo tako. Igracina! Jedini ``problem`` sto je bio u ekipi sa najboljim igracem sveta ikada. Pa treba neki ljudi da se opasulje i da vide velicinu ovog igraca. Jordanu svaka cast, i jeste najbolji, ali Kukoc VRHUNSKI igrac i zasluzuje svoje mesto.

Maybe because he's too nice, but don't get it why people don't talk more about him. One of the best ever, on both sides of the Atlantic. Even better in his early years in Europe. That was beautiful to watch!

Cos the media only gloat about Jordan back in the day, and Jordan would only gloat about Jordan, with his ego and big speech, and overshadowed Toni's many glorifying games, or that Toni's importance in helping throughout 2nd 3peat run possible. Toni will always be my GOAT. Toni Kukoč always delivered!

@@blo2706 The people that are always trying to remind you that Jordan is the GOAT and had 2x 3-peats. They don't want you to know just how much of an impact scottie, and grant made in the first 3-peat and scottie + rodman, kerr, and kukoc in the second 3-peat.
Toni Kukoc should have been a Hall of Famer a long time ago! He paved the way along, with Vlade Divac and Drazen Petrovic, for many international players to enter NBA. He is a modest “superstar” and very thoughtful man. Not having him recognized in the Hall of Fame is not a loss for Toni, but for the HF!

Kukoc was a match up nightmare for opponents. He was too big for guards and small forwards to stop and he was too smooth and too good of an outside shooter for the big men to keep up with.

Kukoc made a sacrifice when he went to Chicago. He could have stayed in Europe and remained a star he could have been a star on another team had they put him in a role similar to luka doncic but he wanted to play with his idol Mike and probably figured he'd have a good chance to win some rings which he did. However... It was at the expense of him being the star. He was a born playmaker and ridiculous with assists and super clutch. Had he been put in as a point guard he would have broke the triple double record easily yearly and all time etc and it would be hard to break. He would have been an all time great. But he accepted his role in Chicago. He wanted to be the best team not the best player. He would have elevated any team no matter what role and although they had him in the worst possible role in Chicago coming off the BENCH mostly and as a forward who they had gain weight he still shined and did enough and deserves for his sacrifice to be a hall of famer

As his career progresses, his role has changed from being the star player to being a mentor of the younger international players during his time in Milwaukee. Ersan Ilyasova wears number 7 because of Toni.

He wanted to prove to himself and the world that he wasn't just a big fish in a small pond but that he could succeed in the biggest pond of all and swim alongside the big fish there. I'm not criticising him for this. There's nothing wrong with doing that and he succeeded in doing it. Let's just not get romantic about his motivation.

Not really. Only because they’ll let anybody in these days. And even then-his career numbers don’t really stack up. Unless you give him the #s from his days playing in Europe, which is far, FAR inferior competition than the NBA. He was really good. And fun to watch. I was a fan & loved his style of play. But it come down to simple math: did he have Hall of Fame numbers?.... no way.

Moral of the story: Do not bow yet as if the game has been won.
Quite baffling how Kukoc is not in the Basketball Hall of Fame yet, when Dino Radja somehow got inducted (2018). Nothing against Radja, who is quite accomplished himself in the International Basketball scene, but his NBA career pales in comparison to Kukoc, who enjoyed a much longer and more successful NBA career. Aside from the HOF snub, Kukoc's also deserves to have his No. 7 Bulls jersey retired.
The Croatian Sensation truly deserves to be in the Hall of Fame! BRING HIM TO THE HALL OF FAME!!

@@BokiJuda I also watched him (few times live). And I have to be honest... He was so good that I actually hated him, especially when he was playing vs my favorite team. But there's no doubt he was one of the best ever. Easily top 5 best EU players in history. HoF? I'm also sure he is better than at least half of players who already are in the HoF.

@@BokiJuda My home team, Zadar (Croatia). It's not a super great team, but it was legendary in Croatia and ex-Yugoslavia. It had some good seasons in Europe too, but not recently. Today it's on the edge of extinction. Among many great players from Zadar, the biggest name is Krešimir Ćosić. An EU superstar at the time. He also earned his spot in the Hall of Fame.

The Greatest Team for three years 1996,1997 & 1998, with The Goat, MJ, the greatest pair, MJ and Pippin, the greatest Rebounder of all time Dennis Rodman and best or the greatest European Import to play NBA, Toni Kukoc. The other four are Hall of Famers but not Toni Kukoc. His exclusion from Hall of Fame induction will be a black mark for NBA.

..and he will be a Hall of Famer sooner or later, no doubt abou that. I already saw him playing in his early years with Split, it was obvious that he will become a star on both sides of the Atlantic. Loved him all his career, but most with the Bulls. I always wonder why people tend to talk about the "Big 3" in Chicago. Rodman was clearly a very important piece, the missing one since Horace was let go. BUT Kukoc was as important as Denis. He could carry the team, decide games, even when MJ and Pip did not have their best day. He was a walking mismatch on offense, could score a game winner at any time. I still remember vividly a game against the Lakers (must have been 96 or 97), where he simply took over in the 4th and won the all game trailing Bulls the game in overtime. He even scored a epic 3 over Shaq out of a fast break giving the Bulls the first lead..
His passing was remarkable also

No Kukoc didn't save the Bulls LMAO, Kukoc shot 39% & 36% in the Playoffs in 96 & 97. 98 Kukoc had a good run in the r.s. & p.o.

#7 Play, although there are faster players/quick step versus Kukoc especially in current NBA but there's something about that play(steps) that makes it standout more for me.

Watching The Last Dance I got the impression that Tony didn't like Jordan and Pippen. His body language showed me he thought they were a bunch of arrogant assholes... Being a great player like Kukoc and playing with big ego's like Jordan is something I couldn't have done. Kukoc would have been a 25 point avarage player on any other team.

It's not like Toni didn't like them, but Jordan and Pippen hated him. In one hand, MJ and Scottie were right, because Krause was paying Toni much more than Pippen, even tho Scottie was an established NBA superstar and the leader of Bulls at the time (after MJ went baseball). On the other hand, Toni wasn't guilty for that. The beef was between Krause and Pippen, so it wasn't fair Toni suffered Scottie's intolerance.

It is not that he didn't like them, it was more from MJ and Pip who decided to be jerks and picked on him because to them with little knowledge of Eurobasket, Toni was just a white kid coming into their territory with better contract. Even those sports analysts and media underestimated him because they thought they knew better, even made up bullshit story that he himself never interviewed with them. I lived through that era being a fan myself , Toni endured all those things gracefully, and proved them wrong. And in the end, Toni was the one who made 2nd 3peat possible. No matter how goat Jordan was, without Toni in many crucial games, they stood no chance. He was the shark sent into the tank, because he was superb in offense, once you released him, it was a game on. Yep, he reduced his play to fit into NBA style, so people didn't know how phenomenal he actually was. Being in the team with Jordan didn't help either. Having lived through those time with how media portrayed, no matter how incredible Toni was in many games, only thing they would focus more and put on headlines was MJ. Perhaps, it was marketing and many sponsors behind. I actually find Toni played well along with Pippen, Rodman, Harper, Kerr. They were more natural together cos when MJ around, they sort of have to try to give MJ the ball. Pippen might act like a demanding kid sometimes, but I think he actually was a nice person, just having his moments. For Jordan, he was a good scorer because they would just feed him the ball, and MJ just dribbled in the area then shoot. The games were made for him to have more chance to score. But for all round player, I might be bias, but I think Toni was the best cos he had better court vision, plus, he can shoot, can pass, can dribble, can dunk. The sad part for me was Toni was too much of a low key and a nice person who didn't seek limelight nor spoke of his glory. Also, all the media attention was more like the whole team only had Jordan and Pippen. Sad but True..

He is from Dalmatia, city of Split. He enjoyed to play, believed in him self and didn't care about Jordans, Pippens, or all USA opinion. From the same city and area are Goran Ivanisevic, Ivano Balic, Luka Modric, Drazen Petrovic, Dino Radja, Kresimir Cosic, Blanka Vlasic, ... They respect everyone but aren't amazed by anyone.

Other cases for him in HOF: -1995-96 6th man of the year -1996 Finals was very close for three qtrs. Kukoc took over the 4th qtr and singlehandedly had the Bulls pull away for the 1-0 lead while MJ and Pippen sat some. -He filled in nicely for injured Ron Harper in the games at Seattle helping them to the sounding 3-0 lead. -Had two big 3s at start of 1996 Finals Game 6 to start distancing the Bulls from the Sonics even more winning the Championship. -Game winning deflection on last play of 1997 Finals Game 5 to win the Championship. -Kept the Bulls afloat in 3rd qtr of 1998 ECF Game 7 which they eventually won. -Was arguably the Bulls second best player in 1998 Finals vs Jazz. -1998-99 sure the Bulls were trash but Kukoc was the only main player left and carried them to a miraculously 13 wins (Harper and other Title role players were way past their primes). -1999-00 Kukoc missed November and December due to injuries and the Bulls went 3-28. Kukoc came back in January and him and Elton Brand carried a bad team to 8-10 record (lots of those games on the vaunted West Coast trip which even dynasty Bulls struggled with so they were pretty much .500) until he got traded in February. -Was the much needed second scorer Iverson needed and Philly was foolish to trade him away. They could've competed much better with Lakers. Iverson lacked scoring help.

Best all around player similar pippen. He was 2,11 left handed and he was playing from 1 to 5 easily. No one like him in this style of game. Unfortunately from NBA best players must be strong athletes and technical criteria is no so importand
All I know is I grew up hearing Chicago Bulls as a great team.
Toni kukoc should be in the hall of fame he is a champion...who was a top road player you need players like him to win playoffs and championship...

I agree, he is one of the most accomplished European basketball player winning multiple awards in the Euroleague, NBA and the Olympics. He should be inducted in the Naismith Hall of Fame in a few years. I just don't know why he gets snubbed multiple times. He was an entertaining basketball player of his time.
