Dan's grandmother had died that same day, so the scream was as real as could be, so real that it made Emma Watson (Hermoine Granger) and Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange) cry.

this is a complete rumor Daniel Radcliffe said himself that no one had died and does not know how this rumor began. at the time he said his grandmother was alive and very well

The fact he lost a family member, and the other cast members possibly knowing that at the time is probably what made the scene so heartbreaking and probably also what made them decide to mute the scream for the Final Cut, out of respect for Daniel. I have howled at the sky uncontrollably at the loss of a loved one and the memory of screaming in pain like that really haunted me for a while.

My own headcanon is, that’s why lastrange had that look on her face as she left where her smile almost seems to fade. Cause she was one of the ones that knew and probably had been comforting him earlier

I'm with you on that one. I chose to believe that he was communicated with and chose to work that day. If you work an office job, you have leave that you are entitled to, and i took a week off of everything when I was grieving, I can imagine that day going on camera and acting. I appreciate that they muted it though, also put of respect for him, I can't imagine my grief being televised.

😢that's what the situation was for Lady gaga in a star is born..last scene singing that song that morning her close friend died of cancer. They were going to cancel filming that day for her and she said NO...IM GONNA USE THE PAIN

You don't even have to hear it to feel his pain 😢

I admire so much how the day they filmed that scene he lost his grandmother but the way he pushed through to continue filming the movie is truly remarkable, he is an incredibly talented actor. He was able to use that sorrow and heartbreak to show the emotion Harry felt in that moment. People don't give him enough credit for the raw, authentic emotion he puts into his work.

His grandfather passed away he was so close with him

He is a great actor but that scene hit home for him and most potterheads that wasn’t acting

The visual scene was heartbreaking enough that the sound wasn't needed. It lent to the mystery of magical powers.

Sirius black was my top favourite actor on Harry Potter I loved him but when he died I cried so much that my cousin was asking me if I was okay it really touched my heart so emotionally

Ii think the muted scream made this scene so much more powerful and emotional to watch. Brilliant choice!

Also, a tidbit that I love to know is the fact that Gary Oldman was coaching him through this the whole way. If you watch the interviews Dan Radcliffe says so.

I think it's even more devastating when it's muted cuz you don't have any sounds to distract you from what just happened

I didn't have to be muted The director deliberately chose to have this slow silent agonizing moment. In fact he said in retrospect he wished that he had slowed the footage down even more

No doubt Daniel Radcliffe would have won an Oscar if the scream had not been muted

At first I thought such an emotional scream that brought people to tears would have been better keeping to highlight the intensity of the moment, then they mentioned he'd lost someone he was close to and it made sense. Muting it was more for respect for Daniel and his loss.

You don't know why there was no sound to the scream untill you've had a scream where no sound comes out.

Solid emotive acting. I was doing special fx for a low budget horror film called black Easter. I was in a side room doing some work. We had a seasoned screen queen named Veronica Carlson. In one scene she was to scream in terror. When she screened. At least half the males and I came charging in, in full protection mode. Many of us were disturbed after that. Unfortunately that screen wasn't used because the audio equipment couldn't capture it. (Didn't have the range and ended with pops in it). The second screen was just a very good scream.

I screamed out when my dad passed away. I was in the car driving as fast as I could to see him before he passed when I got the call from my mom that he was gone. I totally forgot about that until watching this. There's just so much emotion from losing those whom we are close with, and screaming out like that is just instinct. I had no idea this was what was going on then, poor Dan

The scream is more powerful because it was muted. You can FEEL it's intensity.

His performance was so real because that morning of shooting, Danial got news that his grandmother passed away. That’s why the acting was real.

I always thought that that scene looked extremely good. My guy wasn’t acting, he was living.

The muted scream created an intensity that it caused the audience to catch our breaths in silence. It was a good decision, there are children watching the movie. It allowed them to feel Harry's pain without the fear of the scream.

He cast a negative patronus with that scream

It was to protect Daniel. Imagine hearing that scream during the premiere and crying in public. It was to protect him from watching the movie later on in life and with his kids having to relive that pain over and over every time he hears that scream. Now he can watch and remember that day but never hear that raw emotion. That sound can also effect the audience. Remembering their own trams. The screen no longer becomes a scene in a movie but instead real life which looses the audience for the rest of the movie. With the sound muted, music playing, we can feel Harry’s pain and not Dan’s. We can feel sad for Sirius’s death.

It's weird that Helena Bonham Carter is so good at being evil on screen but is so sensitive and gentle irl, especially having been previously married to Tim Burton

it's common to mute scenes like that to make them more impactful.

The fact they made a kid play on a day a family member of his died is beyond me.

Honestly the muted scream was way more powerful then if they left it in you could feel the emotion even though it was silent

I felt his pain and Bela sadness for him. Always thought it was genuine and woe was i right. Brings me to tears all over agdin!!

Also a lot of people say the scream was so loud some of the actors had ringing in there ears

I think making the scream muted actually added to the scene. It was raw and powerful and packs a bigger punch.

It’s called the “Stanislavski System” it’s a form of method acting in which they use real life experiences to draw upon in front of the camera. Though it’s been known to actually be a little unhealthy mentally. Based on the fact they actually are thinking about something sad continuously for the sake of scene.

The director did an interview and said this was not accurate. That they muted it because “the musical score was so powerful they wanted to let it make the full effect”

It's about the only scene in the whole series that actually makes me cry a bit.

Muted scene didn’t stop me from being move. It was power full.

He didn't loose his grandmother during the filming of this movie. She passed away in 2008 and this movie came out in 2007. The theory that his grandfather died during the filming is only a rumor - neither Radcliffe, family or castmember has confirmed this "death".

I really hope now i'm older they don't leave out emotions and make it dark and beautiful in the HBO series

I hope Daniel is ok and is able to know that family member is watching over him and is proud
