When I was a kid my friends and I altered the stickers on a street sign in NY to match my last name. They replaced the sign and the new updated sign continued to have the "new" street name on it. Maps ever since have also seemed to reflect this. I've wondered for years what kind of chaos and problems a couple of kids made for people's mail and billing as an adult. There's your general mayhem of people.

You changed history man! What was the name of the street before and after?

I really wish I had seen this video while my father was still alive. As a little Canadian child growing up in Germany, my father often went to Bielefeld for training exercises. The name is as familiar to me as any place name in the areas of Germany where Canadian forts were established as part of the Canadian contingent of British Army on the Rhine establishments. I am certain there are thousands of Canadians who know of the place from their own fathers' service. What a fascinating bit of trivia to learn about the story you tell. I used to have a photo of my father's car, or rather what was left of it, following a wreck on his way home from Bielefeld (iirc). The story I recall was that my father was removed from the wreck and thought to be deceased. Someone noticed a twitch in one of his fingers and he was rushed to a hospital. Since I do know the town and its name, I guess I am in on the conspiracy! What a fun realization - thank you for sharing this!

Some places are forced to be removed from maps by governments. There is even this one place I have found while exploring near my hometown that just shows empty on maps and even in satelitepictures even though there is stuff there and has been for a long time. Many people in my hometown have heard of the place but only a few have been there, because it is hard to find if you don't know where you are going and it is not the easiest place to get to either. There is a good reason why it doesn't exist on maps though.

I came across a copywrite trap on a map once, though it wasn't a fictitious town. While studying the terrain around Holbrook, Arizona in the Arizona Atlas and Gazetteer, published by DeLorme, I saw a very small, about 3mm wide, cartoon of a frog. I kept looking at it to discern if it was somehow a land feature. I finally got out a magnifying glass and confirmed it was a frog. I found a regional phone number for DeLorme and gave them a call to report what I found and to suggest they had made a mistake. After a bit of a go-round, I was finally patched to someone who could address my concerns. He confirmed that the frog was a "mark of authenticity" or something like that and congratulated me for finding it. Thanks for the video. Now I know why it was put there.

I used to work for Geographic Data Technology. Their data was in Google Maps, delivery companies, in-car nav, etc. We still used ghost streets then and we also needed at least 2 sources to add a street to our maps.

I worked in bielefeld in 1970/1971 in a car scrapyard. Being from england ( an extremely hilly country) the thing that struck me most about this scrapyard was that it was out in the wilds and in every direction you looked the land was as flat as a pancake, no hills or mountains in the background. No roads or buildings to be seen anywhere except the small backroad we had travelled on to get there. There was a town somewhere in the distance where I was staying, but nowhere near enough to be seen from the scrapyard. That town was called bielefeld. And it was a lovely, quite quaint little place. Thanks for jogging my memory.

As an aside, older maps can be very interesting. I own a vintage map that actually includes the "here there be monsters" warning and accompanying illustrations... and the "known world" according to this map is far from complete and accurate. It's fascinating and beautiful (the craftsmanship and artistry are wonderful).

Turns out, the Ruwenzori Mountains are what Ptolemy referred to as "The Mountains of the Moon." One of the tallest ranges in Africa, the name was officially changed during decolonization, but is still widely used colloquially.

They have been classified as SAFE, although upon touching anything in the area, it consumes ones [person] with a trace of nothing but clothing. With MTF operating under the Golden Eye League, all transmissions were lost once group Captain approached a solid mass of gold, and proceeded to touch it. STF was sent in to observe and find, only the gear the MTF had on. Found a second copyright trap. The mapmaking organization is Germany that you reference did not produce such a map since there is no actual organization with that name. According to its website, it is actually called the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG), not the Federal Office for Geography and Surveying. Oh and that map most definitely did not contain s blank puzzle piece. They just omitted the city,

~11:00 - As a former delivery driver there aren't too many streets in the city of Toronto that I don't know - or rather didn't 25 years ago, but still .. there were some, and so I had a Perly's Guide (map book) at hand. For reasons long forgotten I noticed one day that Old Weston Road on the map still connected to Dundas St. W., but familiar with the area, knew well that the bridge that once connected them had been gone for decades .. indeed there was a mature Birch growing right through the center marking line of what was once the bridge ramp. Coincidentally, a decade later I actually found myself having a drink with a lass who was actually the granddaughter of the original Perly and mentioned this - and thus learned of the existence of "paper streets".

I used the phrase 'hic sunt draconus' in one of my novels as a chapter heading, despite my Latin being pretty bad. It was how I found out about the ostrich egg globe a few years ago. Fascinating stuff. I loved the references to komodo dragons. Bear in mind, however, all cartographers were likely rich noblemen who were drunk or very stoned as they were on their world tour. They loved a lot of drugs. Crowley is a good example of people from those times, despite him being slightly later in the timeline. Wicked, he was, and an asshole, too, but his file appears to be missing from British secret service. Either he did some truly heinous things, or he did them specifically for the crown. In which case, I imagine Elizabeth II didn't want the world knowing what her father might have ordered him to do. But bovem excrementum was a little on the nose (well, hopefully not).

I love John Green. It’s funny, I watched him for years on KZread before I ever realized he wrote several books I was a fan of during and after high school.

When I was taking my course in graphic design, my Instructor told was to create intentional flaws that were very small and hard to recognize in our designs, or write a name somewhere in the design in case someone tried passing off our work as their own.

In the '90s there was an airline map (perhaps Lufthansa) on the wall where I worked that showed Morrell Island to the west of Hawaii, an island that has never existed since it was "discovered" by Captain Morrell in 1825. Surprisingly the International Dateline diverted around Morrell Island to include it in Hawaii's time zone until 1910.

When I was studying in the Netherlands, a friend of mine was from Bielefeld. In fact, there may be 2 or 3 people from Bielefeld in my social circle. A lot of German students specially from Nordhein Westfallen were studying with me!

I actually live in Bielefeld, and I can confirm that I do not exist.

Thoroughly fascinating video, as always. I love cartography and encyclopedias. And sneaky 'watermarkings'/Mountweazels are brilliant. I learned a lot and was enrapt. But I got to the end and you dropped that bomb. My reaction: "You motherf--r!" And then I laughed out loud. Brilliant.

Fascinating. Other industries have similar tricks. I've learned that many online retailers have invisible marks on the items they sell, to prevent return scams. In the marketing world, client and prospect lists are "salted" with misleading data to prevent list abuse. Society has a lot of easter eggs for anyone curious enough to look.

I studied in Bielefeld, the cardboard houses there look pretty convincing.

Sandy Island could’ve existed but was worn away. Look at where the old Port Royal existed. Most of what was that area has been eroded, submerged, and buried in the sand.

@@CallMeMrChainmail coulda been an underwater sandbar, if the ocean visibility was high enough you can see a sandbar that's 30 meters underwater, so it would look like an island, but not actually be one

I grew up on a street called Bielefeld and had variations on that name. Various GPS and map services spelled the name differently as a copyright trap, making it hard for us to use satnav systems to get home for years

Perhaps it was the NZ flag waving when talking about the Australian expedition to Sandy Island that was the Mountweazel?

I am always thinking of road trip ideas for trips I'll never take. Paper towns would be an interesting road trip. That is, at least until you arrive at nowhere. But still, the getting there could be fun. Well, never mind going on this road trip that I would have never gone on in the first place. After doing a quick Google search, it does appear that there is only ever one reference to a US "paper town" and that is Agloe. That would be a lack luster road trip for sure. I'll keep looking. But I figure my search for multiple American "paper towns" may be a dead end.

I can only imagine the research Thoughty2 has to do to bring us these awesome videos. Thank you so much for your dedication, Arran.

I am from Germany and I don't know if he just translated something poorly or he made it up, but "Geography and X" does not exist and "Surveilling" would absolutely not be the 2nd part of that office. We have a "Federal office for Cartography and Geodesy" and several "Geography departments" at some Universities, but none of them has anything to do with surveillance, in fact we don't have a single office that carries that name.

Lol. Dr. Oetker is from Bielefeld. (That's a quite famous pudding company in Germany.) And actually, when I had business in Hamburg, I made sure to book a train via Bielefeld on my way back to Düsseldorf, got off there and walked around for two hours. The Dr. Oetker factory can actually be visited - but only at certain times and you'd need to make a reservation, which I didn't know and didn't.

You've fallen for another trap. Australia doesn't actually exist, and neither does its flag. Australia is a particularly elaborate hoax, however. A very large set was created and tens of thousands of actors hired to make it appear to visitors as if it is real. They did a great job too - I've been to the set several times, and it would have been believable if they hadn't gotten carried away with the fake animals.

@@psybin It's certainly possible that you're right but on the other hand, I have seen stores in the middle of nowhere like that. Just as an example, imagine that there's a state highway that leads from the interstate to a seasonally popular fishing and boating spot on a lake. It's about a two hour drive from the interstate to the lake. There's a gamble, that some people will take, in putting a store about halfway in between them.

I remember the days of paper maps and they weren’t wrong nearly as often as Google Maps or TomTom. They must’ve just compiled everyone’s maps and didn’t weed out the fake streets and places. Had one take me through a farm once in Arkansas, road started out gravel but soon I was in mud!

Years ago I found a two volume set, Africa the dark continent, the maps and illustration of wild life were a fun read. Written by one who never ventured beyond , New York.

I remember high alpine hiking in the Alps for 6 days taking my fathers maps with me . Everything went fine until I was supposed to traverse a glacier . Turns out the map was 20 years old and the glacier dramatically has melted and was impossible to traverse on the original path without ice picks and lots of luck . So I had to find another way and found a marker further up the trail to traverse . Got delayed about 2 hours and made it just in time to the shelter before sun set . Moral of the story : dont take old maps with you ever

Used to work with teletext, we did pretty much the same thing. With sports results, in lower leagues no one really paid attention to we would mess with the live score, attendance figures and stuff to see who was copying us

This is the first time I've heard about this Bielefeld ruse, so when he started talking about it I found it very strange, because I work in the transport industry and we have been making weekly transports from and to Bielefeld for years. Also, I watch football, so I knew there's a football club called Arminia Bielefeld - that I came across ever since I started watching football some 25 years ago.

The Kong mountains are probably similar to the "paper towns" that popped up in the US. Basically, cartographers would make fake towns on maps, so they could tell when they had been plagiarized. The funny twist to that was, so many people would go to this non-existent towns, real settlements started popping up. But obviously that can't happen with mountain ranges. Edit: I should have just shut up and watched the whole video before commenting.

Hometown bar one night my friends and I are taking with a guy who plots maps for Hagstrom Maps . He tells us he can tell us location of every street in our town {largest town in Hudson County NJ} . We start asking about some obscure streets we know of . He is correct every time . Then we ask what about the rest of the state , Trenton , Jersey City , towns in Bergen County . About half an hour this goes on He does not miss one . Then he tells us what you said about fake streets and road to catch plagiarists . What memory this guy had . I have a dozen or so Hagstroms , they are all out of print and I believe Hagstrom is out of business now { at least printed maps } .

New Piddleberg is an actual town in New York that doesn't appear on any maps. It's about halfway between Schenectady and Poughkeepsie.

Check out some of the little towns on the east side of James Bay in Google Maps. Maps will show you some road layout, but you can't streetview them. I work in a camp up there and if you haven't been there to know the layout first hand, you would never be able to point out the camp on Google Maps - the resolution just isn't high enough so it's totally pixilated.

In the 1980’s there were a series of articles that there was no State of Idaho.

It's nice to see my country Bhutan in Thoughty 2's video even if it's just about a mountain. The fact that Gangkar Phuensum's reign as the tallest unclimed mountain is due to its uncertain location on the map is quite bizzare as a Bhutanese which I am quite sure majority has no clue about. Anyways it's an eye opener for us. Thanks man 🙌
