In Egypt, the Arab world, and across Africa, everyone knows who Egypt’s greatest-ever player is. Not Mohamed Salah, but Mohamed Aboutrika.
But today, he is in exile and considered an enemy of the state by his own country.

As a Tunisian I can attest that Abutrika remains the most loved football player ever, even more than Mo Salah. He was our nemesis on the field (Tunisian national team and Esperance sportif de Tunis) but after the games we flocked to him for autographs! Let me tell you that Egypt lost a lot of popularity among North African football fans for what they did to him and Al ahla and ultras.... and Egyptian football as a whole. They recovered now somewhat but they're still nowhere near their 2006-2010 level. And for the non Arabs/Africans out there, Egyptians are the sweetest people you'll ever meet. Don't let the actions of politicians cloud your judgement vis-à-vis this glorious nation!

As a Moroccan, and like many Moroccans, I consider Aboutrika the best Arabic football player of all time. His technical skills, movement, dribbling, personality, and attitude both on and off the pitch are phenomenal. If he had chosen to play abroad, I am confident that without a doubt, he would have been one of the best players of all time.

It is a big loss for football that this guy didn’t play in europe at the highest level so more people can enjoy his magic. Forget about all his trophies, goals and many great moments, you just have to watch Egypt vs Brazil in the 2009 confederations cup. Against the very best this guy dominated the midfield and dropped an all timer that reminds me of Zidane’s performance against brazl in 2006. Legend🫡 El Magicooo ❤️❤️

I was like wow this player must be great. So each time i heard commentators say Spain most capped player and so forth i was like ooh so thats Spain finest, so thats Brazil's finest player wow. Later on wen i became familiar with football terminology and kept hearing this and learning the game i felt embarrassed o myself now knowing wat a cap means for players at international level😂.

Abou Trika is a man of principles. In Egypt any person that is not in line with the regime could be accused of terrorist crimes. The Egyptian government allowed him to leave the country (to avoid any local confrontation) then publicly labeled him as a terrorist and seized his assets. Although Abou Trika being 100% against the current regime and being wrongly accused he never spoke a single word criticizing Egypt. He was denied to attend the funeral of his father, his kids are not allowed to live and play for an egyptian team. Due to his popularity he is considered as an enemy of the state.

Abu Trika, another sportsman bigger than any club. With more balls and humanity than Ronaldo or Messi. He didnt sold his soul to money or an easy life. He lost his freedom but won everyone's respect, also from his enemies. Honestly I didnt knew this story but needs to be know because our media is controled by powerful people that only let us adore useless idols, useless hobbies and sports. Long live Abu Trika Peace Love Unity and Respect
