Why this could be the best new van on sale // Jonny Smith

This Vlog episode of CarPervert is brought to you in association with Mina Energy - the EV Fuel Card for home and public charging - mina.co.uk/business
Vans are used by tradespeople and delivery companies the world over. Many of them do inner city driving, as well lots of stop-start short journeys. 2020 is a huge year for full EV, hybrid and Range Extender / PHEV commercial vehicles, and this one in particular spiked Jonny's interest. When is a taxi a van? When it is a British designed and built LEVC (London Electric Vehicle Company) VN5.
The VN5 is classed as a range extender EV, meaning it has a 1.5 (60kW) petrol engine under the bonnet, but that acts as a generator as opposed to driving the rear wheels. It powers the 110kW (150hp) electric motor on the rear axle when the 400v 31kWh liquid cooled battery pack (under the front seats) have run out of battery power, or when you decide to save the battery for city/town use.

I've been following the growth of the black cabs since their launch [in fact I can never get near a charger for my EV anymore because of them!] but it's pushing three years now and they are overdue for a battery upgrade. They really need another 20 to 25 miles on them to keep up with the progress everyone else is making - that's both for the taxi and the van.

But all the other can makes are charging double or triple the price of a diesel... Why.. can someone like you do some investigation or even just ask them why they are so expensive.. the LDV electric Van is £60k. The diesel version is £17k. Renault master £65k and no rapid charger. Why?

@@elliottslab the extra copper is needed to get the HV power from the front of the car to the driven wheels. In this case to the back of the vehicle. With a conventional car/van the highest voltages rarely leave the engine bay. The copper is also used in the electric motors and charging systems. As for the other components, they will get cheaper over time. But the modern EV vehicle is still in its infancy. There are multiple standards, and none of them have gained a dominance that will allow costs to be driven down by scale. And the EV sector is still a small slice of the entire market. So each standard is a small slice of a small slice. Plus, manufacturers are desperate to be on the right side of legislation. They want something in place to show governments they are acting. They are in the "we must do something" mode. Costs will be addressed as standards standardise, and volumes increase.

Bit of history for you Jonny, back in the mid to late 80’s we were running LDV Sherpas that were totally battery powered (lead acid obviously) the battery pack being underslung like the milk floats of that period. They could travel from the Rover assembly plant at Cowley to Theale nr Reading and back which was approx. 50+ miles on a regular basis with ease. So, some thirty odd years later, commercial EV range hasn’t drastically improved much, has it.

The load it can carry is 800KG, a Trafic, Transit or Transporter is average 1200KG, the blue van with the Tevo racking must be close to that weight. @@Wookey. at the moment the running costs do appear to be cheaper. But that's only because there's no fuel duty, vat is only 5% and they weren't paying road tax that could have changed when road taxing got changed. The UK government aren't going to let that go forever as soon as enough people have them we will see how they will cash in. They could make people have a separate meter installed then get them to fill a form every year and Bill them, or simply, charge them about £2k a year but they will do something. When I first started driving diesel Vans in the early 90's it was less than half the cost of petrol now look at it there's an example. Also these vehicles couldn't exist without oil, then there's the impact of the mining for the materials, and some of the mines had children mining. We just have to accept no matter what we drive, and what may or may not come out of the back someone will be affected.

Great video, my dad drives a small Royal Mail van. I mentioned how Royal Mail keeps doing trials of EVs and never seems to invest in a sizeable fleet. His answer was they generally don't keep the vans very long for various cost cutting reasons. I was saying they're an ideal case use for EV vans and could really help the UK commercial EV industry. What you said about the materials and warranty being a reason for companies to buy and keep them longer will hopefully see RM show more confidence in this type of vehicle. My dad is a lil sceptical about himself owning one so such a move could prompt the workers to understand the positive reality.

Love it! Make them last, make them solid, make them well. Drift van? With that steering angle, heck yes! Johnny, awesome episode - thank you! Whilst watching this, my mind went straight to...... ......This would make an excellent base for a small campervan (camping car). I'd pick the Ultima as the base for it with one sliding door and have the option of a diesel as the ICE recharge unit, as well as both sets of charging plugs at the front. A larger, higher roofed, LWB version would be even better for this. Also, as the body panels are composite, side panels could be moulded for use for campers in-house and added on the production line with a bare interior shell, then sent to third party manufacturers for finishing, or for custom fitment by the company itself off the line (like what GM did with the GMC Motorhome in the 70's). Throw some solar panels on the roof, a small slimline air-conditioner, a side mounted awning as well as beefed up suspension and you're golden! Range extended EV campervan? Yes please!

As long as it's going to be Congestion Charge exempt it's on the shortlist - but it would be a deal-breaker if it wasn't. Also, the lease cost needs to be around £300/month to be competetive. Unfortunately we don't have any policies in place to promote EV's in any way (don't even have efficiency/ emissions standards for any vehicles) to assist in improving health and environmental outcomes. So kudo's to you and any other business who commit to the transition even if you wear initial higher $ costs. Use your eco-friendly delivery van within your marketing material. 👍

Most large firms will start using them, or some at least form of EV. There will be more pressure to become carbon free as possible, there will be incentives for fleets to go EV and they are much cheaper to maintain. So if you have a big enough fleet, the higher costs over time will provide similar or greater savings. Of course, this is heavily dependant on government incentives considering the market remains too small to be cost efficient. Once it kicks off with the big firms and prices come down, the SMEs will start to saturate the market.

I might not have been able to say this before your videos, for obvious reasons, became so popular, but, I want to be a Pervert, too! Where to begin? First of all, your videos just keep getting better and better... more and more interesting... more and more relevant to a wider audience, so well done for that. - I now use motorbikes for 95% of my travel. - Unless a 4-wheeler is truly exceptional, I'm interested only in practicle, utilitarian cars and vans. This kind of thing, and praticularly this one, therefore, I think is a fantastic leap forward. There are too many positive points about the vehicle, as I see it, to wax lyrical about them all, much as I am tempted. With a warranty/service intervals like that, I can see people buying these 2nd-hand with, perhaps, 100,000 miles already on them, and converting them, as is popular now, into 'home-made' camper vans or live-in vans... particularly if they go on sale in the US where there is space to roam. Until you mentioned the price, and I can understand why it is (seemingly exceedingly) high, I could see regular folks getting one as a utilitarian private vehicle.... (perhaps that other medium-sized Renault you showed might fit that) Very surprised to hear that this company and Volvo are owned by a Chinese company, but that production of this vehicle takes place in the Midlands in the UK - where I grew up. Good one, Pervert!

@@acelectricalsecurity As you just pointed out 'up to 10%' is the difference from empty to loaded. My experience is more like 4% than 10% (Peugeot expert mk1) but then I am rarely anywhere near the payload limit. An EV will suffer reduced range from extra mass more than a diesel in hilly areas, and probably more overall (because the engine is so much more efficient, the load difference is a higher percentage of the available energy - same story with trailers). So that 60 miles could easily be 50 miles when full. Still this is a nice machine if going all-electric is not convenient. And the Ali+composite means it should last pretty-much forever.

Terrific video, love the London cab and this van is so so nice, even though I don't need a van at all, I really would love one of these.

Coincidentally, Channel 4 screened their show about the making of the taxi version last night (Saturday, July 25th 2020 for watchers in the far future)

Great base for a small campervan conversion. Easy to make and substitute panels, good clean load bed for seat / bed conversions and we've seen the installation of cupboards and cabinets here already. Starts a bit pricey but really practical for those longer tours where you can get some dinosaur juice from time to time but also you can get electricity at campsites and visitor attractions. Living near Coventry I'm hoping to see a few in the wild soon.
