Bones reds are very easy to recommend but not all ball bearings are designed to be shieldless. Some need the lubricant inside to keep them from corrosion, without shields the dust can easily stick to lubricant. That way you have 2 factors that will cause your bearings to deteriorate much quicker.
@PHeMoX
Жыл бұрын
The bearings that are 'designed' to be shieldless still 100% need shields. It's the industry's biggest marketing hoax to pretend shieldless bearings are a real thing. It has nothing to do with the lubricant type. And _all_ bearings need lubricant.

I've popped the shields off my bones reds almost every time I got a set since I started skating and have honestly noticed less problems than when I have had the shields on. I don't know why, maybe it's because even though dirt and gunk can get in easier, it can also get out easier
@DarkoNomad

@@matildagreene it really depends on how often, how aggressive and where do you skate. In skatepark and on metal coping chances of getting dirt inside are far less than on the streets and concrete ledges. Honestly, I don't know why so many people are removing the shields, I only let them go when they pop on their own.
I switch back and forth between super reds and big ball reds, and I definitely don't take shields off. Reds are too delicate to go shieldless IMO.

When i was a kid, i would use really bad bearings from time to time. But if you soak them in wd40 overnight, they literally turn into abec 9s and it LASTS. Id do it to better bearings too and it just conditions them nicely and adds some smoothness. I've skated modus black bearings longboarding a lot and they're alright for how cheap they were. I like to buy bearings that are cheap but good (like reds) so you can replace them often and get that fresh out of the box feeling. That long 50-50 grind was gnarly as! Do you prefer approaching the grind slow or fast? I'm noticing I slip out if I hit a grind too fast, but stumble if I hit it too slow. Also, I'm finding it hard waxing to a point the ledge is buttery and predictable but not icy.

I don't know if anyone else noticed that they changed the formular around 15 years ago. Back then there've been spacers in the package and the sticker was different. But most important: the bearings themself felt different. My subjective feeling was, that the original forumular was faster. And they've been objectively louder (a few friends noticed that as well). You might think loud is bad. But I actually liked it a lot! Cause there was a loudness differense between rolling and free-spinning. So when you made a rock2fakie for example you could hear the bearings free-spinnin. That was dope. I would pay a lot to get old new stock of the original REDS! And by the way, I'm hating you for popping the shieds off!
@PHeMoX
Жыл бұрын
Or maybe you got 'lucky' and got some fakes with a more recent purchase? Because I'm fairly sure the formula didn't change, at least not in terms of the type of metal used. And the type of wheel you ride also matters for the sound it all makes. Especially the harder the wheel gets. I do 100% agree with you on never popping off the shields. I think it's kind dumb. Why ruin bearings that would otherwise last way way way longer? Dirt inside any bearing is a killer. Yes, even for Bronson 'Raws'. There is no such thing as 'self-cleaning bearings'.

@@PHeMoX that wasn’t luck. I‘m riding REDS for 20 years or maybe even longer with only few exceptions in between. And at some point they changed. Roller Skater here (quads) and I bought the Bonez Reds back when I bought my skates (exactly a month ago). I don't have really much feedback on them yet. I pulled them apart earlier and cleaned them. They were pretty dirty; I skate regularly, and I think that is why. I am confused though, when I put them back together, the red shields, I can't remember if they go on front and back side of the wheel. I am missing one shield, honestly, I am thinking about just taking the other red cap shields off, and doing a trial and error, where this is my first set of the bonez redz. I don't know, either that or I can go to the skate shop and have them find me another red cap replacement. Did it yield good results when you took the caps off? Honestly bones reds kinda suck I've been using them basically forever, but using super reds more, has made me realize just how bad redz are. They work great at first, but once they start to lose their roll, it doesn't come back. Maybe if you clean and lube them EVERY week they will last, but just recently I tried to clean my redz (was probably 6+ months since I got them, never cleaned) and lubed them up with speed cream, and well, it kinda didn't do anything. I have bones super redz that have been on a board for like 6 years without ever cleaning them (cruiser I stopped riding a while ago so it's been sitting like 5 years), and they still roll better than the cleaned up reds that I bought last summer. The year was 2011, I was returning to skateboarding, bought the Reds and followed the advice of an experienced fellow to pop off the shield. Believe it or not, I replaced them only a few months ago (2023), but only because they are too loose. None had broken. Yes, there where some years that I skated much less, but only for 2 or 3. Most of them I skated more than once a week. Which bearings I choose? Of course, reds again. Yeah I figured the same man, standard reds are just so damn good for the price!
The major difference between most bearing brands comes down to their lubrication. For the most part, bearings will all perform about the same, with the big difference in feel being the viscosity of the lubricant. Thicker lubricants like grease will kill your speed faster but will last longer. Thinner oils will let you keep speed, but it will let smaller debris in and eventually it will dry out and risk rusting/seizing. ABEC rating doesn't matter for skating, so don't be fooled by that - it's a rating that is completely irrelevant after a few impacts. Most people's testimonies for any given brand of bearing comes from their amazement at how smooth and fast their brand new bearings are compared to their old, dry, sandy, deformed bearings. Any new bearing will feel better than a used set. Buy affordable bearings and just replace them once they don't perform normally anymore.
@LeonPaxton

So basically all Bones bearings should be similar then since they all have the speed cream lubricant? Yeah that's true, going from old crusty bearings to any brand of new clean bearings would make a massive difference no matter the quality or price of those new bearings lol

I highkey disagree with this. Wear does affect but wear on a well kept ceramic or other high q bearing is very good compared to any cheap shit. If you buy a 12 dollar bearing set it never feels actually good when you roll. If as a person there is no difference between you riding a mazda and a porsche, then you are a person who doesnt care what bearings you ride. The difference is huge, and bearings ride very different. They also affect the way your trucks and wheels and board feel, because they are all connected

@@jacedragon You need the spacers if you don't want to shorten the lifespan of your bearings. When you tighten the axle on your inline skates, it puts a lot of the pressure on the inner race of the bearings. This pressure is then transferred to the balls inside the bearings restricting them from rolling smoothly. The spacers alleviate this pressure by connecting the two bearings together and cancel out the pressure that is otherwise transferred to the bearing balls.

Keep the shields on and keep them from getting wet and they will last a long time.
I still love standard reds, they are fast enough, they can get dirty, take a fucking beating and still perform. Also cheap enough to just buy new ones when they finally do go to shit. I am also in Canada and skate in cold weather in the winters quite often, other brands always go to shit in the winter, the reds dont.

I would say spending more than $20-30 on bearings will never be worth it. I've had some amazing experiences with Independent GP-S bearings, which are in fact even cheaper. Same goes for Mini Logo bearings, which are rebranded Reds standards. I also don't believe any of the 'specialised' bearings make all that much sense except for maybe ceramics when you intend to cruise through rain. Those _should_ last longer in such cases. But they are more vulnerable, especially when it comes to impact skating.

They were called china bones not just because they are made in china, but because they used to actually be called that on the packaging and marketing when they came out over 20 years ago. Normal bones were not that expensive back then either, but they were never considered cheap. They are made to the same specs but using different steels and cheaper manufacturing. The real swiss bearings have a more premium steel which definitely helps them last longer and ride smoother overall.

Bearing companies know skateboarders are super cheap that is why. If they actually made the bearings better no skateboarder would buy them because they would be out of their price range. Look at it this way, bearings are used in almost everything these days to cars to generators. Money can be made from bearings but all bearing companies in USA decide not to make them because although the market is there to make money, skaters aren't going to spend $80 on a set of stainless steel bearings made in the USA.
