Why there is no need for orphanages in Africa | Lisa Lovatt-Smith | TEDxAccra
Why should children with families be cared for in orphanages when they can actually be integrated and supported to live with people they love and those who love them.
The best way to address the menace of having children on the streets and away from home is enhancing the capacities of impoverished families and strengthening communities so they can take care of these children. The model is tried and tested by OAfrica, operating in Ghana.
Lisa Lovatt-Smith is English but was born in Spain. Her life experience of being abandoned at age 4 and being a foster child who was later reunited with her biologically mother gave her a better understanding of how families care for children better than orphanages. This enabled her open a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in rural Ghana OAfrica. Their duty is reunite abandoned children with their extended families.

Good on you, Lisa! Thanks for shining a light on these important issues! We've got a long way to go, but it seems awareness is now finally growing and real change happening! #familiesNOTinstitutions Keep up the great work! - the CCT team
Thank you for standing up for the kids.
Wow,this is my destiny calling....I pray to be of value in someone life.... Thank you, very well spoken....
Excellent talk!
So closed minded. To say there is no such thing as a good orphanage is simply ignorance at it best. Irresponsible and saddening

Interesting... tell us why she's wrong, as she's given a pretty solid talk and you've given no evidence at all... I can't see any evidence for a 'good' orphanage myself.
Bravo Lisa!!!
I agree absolutely that a loving family is far superior to orphanages. Unfortunately, where I live, the number one police activity is responding to alcohol-related domestic violence. Research has proven alcohol to be the most destructive drug in the U.S. as well as many other countries. Almost a year ago, I got a 20-year alcoholic into rehab. It has changed his life in so many ways and, I’m certain it will extend his life if he will stay clean. Alcohol ads are a joke.
감사합니다 덕분입니다 최고입니다 👍
I agree
My ambition is to build an orphanage in my place of heritage Ghana (born and raised in London) I agree with some parts of what she said but others I disagree with vehemently. Nonetheless it's given me a reason to pause and think.

An orphanage connected to the local community, potential employers and the countrys scout movement can be a great place for children to live, grown and learn AND a (Well planned) transition to adulthood. But they have to be REAL Orphans. The orphanage must include house parents in a home-like setting, not a barracks setting. This puts an end to horrors of baby farms, religious exploitation and indoctrination --Maryknoll, Missuionaries of Charity etc. who have hidden agendas.
I was taken away from my parents because they were abusive

What’s wrong?
Diversity is the key
The solution isn't less/no orphanages. It's about BETTER RUN orphanages. And because you had a statistically rare positive experience in foster care ( won't even reference your demographic), you extrapolate that to everyone else? Seriously?
There is no such thing as a good person
