Rich, you’re misunderstanding what Tesla Certified Pre-Owned means. You see, it doesn’t mean the same thing as it does with other, inferior car manufacturers. The dents, scratches, curb rash, and dirt on your car CERTIFIES that the car was indeed pre-owned. If everything was reconditioned and make to look like new again, how would you be able to certify that it was pre-owned? Elon is just being transparent. Tesla is clearly in the right here.

Maybe not look like new. But it should definitely not look like that. If a car is being sold by a car manufacturer then i expect it to be without any function impairments. Minor flaws is expected but if it looks like the car in the video or worse well then the price should be so much reduced that it can actually be repaired without it costing same as buying a new car.

11:37 This little statement from the guy demonstrates that Rich was able to get to this point because he is a major influencer on KZread regarding Teslas, and Tesla feels the heat due to that. Now imagine if just a regular old me or you were in this situation. It would be lucky for us to get an email reply back, let alone see the car in person. And I am sure multiple people are actually going through hell like that, because they don't have the "influence" to give Tesla some heat. Not cool. Please continue to give Tesla heat Rich.

Yup, it's very clear Tesla has teams of people who just scan social media for bad news and then send 'cleaners' to ensure word doesn't spread, to do damage control, or to identify candidates for "success" stories. This is Tesla's "non-marketing" in action. What's baffling to me is the ethos around Tesla is about making the world a better place, but when it comes down to individuals, nope, their rights as consumers don't matter. It's all about who has the biggest social media following or who is willing to scream the loudest. I would bet that Tesla issues brought up by social media are taken more seriously at Tesla than lawsuits for same.

I tried buying a Model 3 at the Indianapolis Keystone location... they didn't have one to see in person on site, and when I asked why, the sales guy told me, "Because we don't need to. You'll buy it without seeing it, so why should we spend money to put one in the showroom?" And that was the end of my desire to own a Tesla. If they have that shitty of customer service when I'm trying to buy one, I can only imagine what it's like to get one fixed. F. That.

I went to my Tesla showroom, told them I was interested in a used 2016 Model S. They told me honestly that test-driving a 2019 Model S wouldn't give a representative feel due to the large number of changes since 2016, but offered me a test drive in a new Model 3 regardless. So that wound up being a fun half-hour. Still... when I'm ready to buy the Model S I'm steeling myself for this experience. lol

Tesla's whole business model is currently base on public opinion. They never had the cars available for sale, but sold them in full anyway. If the publics opinion falls and people cancel their preorders then the company's finances would collapse. Rich has a large enough following with the ability to gather a ground swell of support. He may be one person, but he could cause a serious dent to Tesla's sales and stock. I truely feel sorry for anyone who isn't as famous as him and is going through this.

@TheBiigChicken while I do completely agree, what I'm saying is Tesla is likely hoping for someone who won't roast them to the public and show how awful the car & buying used experience really is when "it will be ready Friday"... It's unfortunate that they only made it a priority due to the publicity, if this was Avg Joe, it would be a nightmare with little to no recourse unlike Rich. Crazy to think anyone let alone a company could do this... Speaking of I have a '96 Sierra for sale, if anyone wants to put down a deposit site unseen, can deliver faster than a used Tesla! 🤣

In that 2 days, I turned in my 16 F150, got the financing done, they fully detailed the car inside and out, filled the tank, threw in focus branded weather tech style floor mats. They even brought it into their well lit showroom so I could inspect the body for flaws before accepting it, and sat with me in the car and went through every button and knob the car has (unnecessary but appreciated) All that in 2 days for a cheapass little car lol

Yeah, I'm sure Tesla will spend millons of dollars now to restructure their whole used car sales approach. Or, they will just go on the way the have been because they make the same money without spending any of their own to improve their service. Wake up, this is just a PR job because Rich has a relatively big impact. So they try to accomodate him, but even at that, they are failing TERRIBLY. It's so bad and unprofessional you wonder if you really wanna sit in one of their cars.

Either way, It's not likely that his trip was just for Rich. Instigated by his expose' on how outrageous this all is, but their objective is certainly to either fix it or to limit their exposure to it at all. Tesla's main issue is that they are a victim of their own success. Similar to the last company I designed for. It takes a while to turn this kind of thing around.

Something similar happened to me with a big Mercedes dealership in 2014. I paid $12500.00 cash for a used 2007 E500 4matic. They sold me the car cash and told me the paperwork for the DMV would show up in the mail....turns out they had just took the car in on trade and didn’t know the guy got a title loan against it the day before he traded it in. it had a lien against it for $3k, that I’m assuming the previous owned used as down payment alongside his trade in. They refused to pay off the lien themselves, and took the guy to court. They mailed me 30day tags for almost 8 months until I finally hired a lawyer who got the DMV involved and threatened a lawsuit. 4 months later I finally received a title in the mail, and when I went down to the DMV to get the vehicle registered I was fined $1,500 for taking a year to register the vehicle from the date it was purchased. I am willing to bet something similar happened to Rich.

One time I showed interest in applying to Tesla for a Service Advisor position. I visited them in person and talked to them before applying to show interest and so they know me a bit. They said they’d see the application in about a week. I applied the next day. I heard back SEVEN WEEKS LATER. By that time I applied elsewhere, got an interview, got an offer, accepted the offer, went through training, and I was already working at a dealership.

When I worked for Mazda the CPO program used I believe it was a 70+ point inspection that was readily available to the customer, and the dealership itself used a 130 point inspection system for every used car we sold. That was regardless of CPO status or not. Plus each car came with a copy of the inspections sheets. If it was a CPO it came with both the Mazda required one and the dealer inspection as well. The fact that Tesla is not readily providing them (at least as of this video) is outrageous.

I have to believe this is happening to EVERYONE buying a used Tesla. Why? Well, Rich has an audience of 400,000 subscribers. Tesla knows this, Tesla has responded to Rich’s videos. AND, in spite of flying in higher ups from Cali, they STILL can’t get out of their own way. I’m super impressed by the legwork to find the car at a certified repair shop. Dang! I've been in the automotive industry for over 20+ years including 12 years at a high end German car dealership. This level of incompetency is beyond belief! We took pride in our used and CPO cars to make sure the customer received the highest quality product possible. Tesla storing used cars at a huge auction company hopefully will be temporary because dealing with auction companies can be a very unpleasant experience. They move thousands of cars every month and don't have time to do anything else beyond what needs to be done. Tesla's massive communication problem needs to be solved quickly before they're flooded with 3-5 year old Model 3's getting traded in for new ones.

Plus with dealers when one has poor leadership it just falls behind and fails, you always have the choice to go to another chevy or MB dealer that does a better job, with this direct model you don't, so if the leadership is bad its not just affecting one or two locations its effective all of them, They all fail or succeed together.

I'm an uber driver in San Jose, CA and I drove a truck driver who delivers Teslas and he said the exact same thing you did. He drives them to a lot where they unload them and then the dealer/showroom goes to the lot to move them when they are being sold. He also complained about them giving the "load." The distribution center sometimes makes the driver wait more than a day and the driver doesn't get paid to wait. He said that one time he is ready to turn in for the night and Tesla calls him at 1am waking him up, that the load is ready to be delivered. That just seems terribly uncoordinated to me.

I worked for FedEx for many years as a store location manager (store manager). I'm accustomed to dealing with clients one on one and then following up or keeping a personal eye on the special ones (difficult, high profile, expensive). The disconnect I see is that Tesla is not hiring a car sales specialist who is taking care of you through the entire process. Now Tesla is seeing first hand why the dealership model exists. You and I both know that Tesla has a serious logistics problem and for the life of me, I don't get why Elon don't hire a Logistics Specialist (who seems to be MIA)and let them handle it. It would be nice if someone on the Board of Directors at Tesla was keeping an eye on 'logistics' instead of stock and profit and legal.

To address your job posting discussion piece on Tesla this is entirely accurate, I’ll explain. My wife is a former auto mechanic and service writer with over 16 years of combined experience. We befriended a sales associate during our visits to the Tesla showroom and eventually talked to this person who had moved over to the service center as there was a job opening for a service writer. So my wife applied for it and received a series of interviews. She thought that since Tesla is a premium auto maker the job would pay well. She had more automotive and service writing experience than all the employees in there combined. She was turned down for the job because she had too much experience, they would rather promote in house, which is understandable. Find out later this job pays minimum wage and she probably would have turned it down anyway but the person hired had zero experience in writing service. No biggie about the hiring in house and training someone new as they can pay the person way less than what my wife would have commanded, from a business standpoint that makes sense. Plus she would have been the only person there that actually owns a Tesla and we both have a deep appreciation for how great the car is. The people there have very little real world experience in the sales and service industries as the job posting states it’s ok with. That’s not a huge issue on paper but in practice it can be a nightmare. My wife was questioned for over an hour on her previous best practices in her previous jobs and find out on our trip to the service center to help with end of year deliveries that some of the suggestions she gave they implemented in the shop. I’ll say it now Tesla is clueless how to handle service and how to handle used car sales. When you pay 70-120k for a car you expect a certain level of customer service when it comes to getting your car serviced. When you have high school kids in there or people with little education or experience this is the customer experience you’ll get. Employees that don’t care or have very little interest in their jobs will not give the customer experience that people expect from a premium priced automaker. Side note. I looked into buying a used Model S a few years ago, I asked for a call back on the car. Received one a few days later and basically he tried to force me to buy it sight unseen. I asked where the car was so I could see it, said he didn’t know. I’m not going to buy a used car and not see it even if it did through a good inspection which at that time they did. Now I’m in a geographically isolated area so I knew where the car was as there are only a few places it could be. So I went to the service center to see it, it was there and when I asked inside about it, you know can I see it, test drive it etc. they looked at me like I was speaking jiberish. I was there to look at a used car and was ASKING for a test drive, clear indications I was interested. Got blank stares, and confused looks. Talking to my wife afterwards she was shocked that someone didn’t try to help as those are clear “I’m interested” cues. Basically I walked out confused as to why I couldn’t drive it, I was standing right next to it in the lot, interested buyer, they basically walked a $45K sale. This needs to get better, and fast, because if this is the norm for used car sales this will not end well.

Tesla is thinking like a software company here. What you're seeing is the "Minimum Viable Product" model of used car sales. They don't hold inventory Manheim does, they don't process the used cars Manheim does. They don't ensure quality, Manheim does. The advantage to Tesla is that this type of system probably didn't take much to get up and running, so at least now they can sell used cars, but of course there's lots of downsides because they control none of the process, it's not tightly integrated and doesn't have much in the way of quality standards. Over time, they will do some combination of layering additional processes on top of the used car process (such as fronting the $50 per car to take showroom photos and put them on the website automatically, sending the car to get detailed before it's delivered), bringing some of the Manheim responsibilities in-house (such as holding inventory and fixing cars before they're bought), or some combination of both. What happens next will be a combination of whatever is easy to do, and whatever is intolerable not to do.

I feel like I'm watching a new Netflix series, I canNOT wait for the next episode!! But in all seriousness this really does suck. As an investor in TSLA and a recent owner of a Model 3, I'm very sad/disappointed to see this. I feel like Tesla should either just stop selling used Teslas, sell them for half price, or idk something needs to happen though because like you said this is downright embarrassing. Someone recently asked me why I didn't buy a used Model S instead of a new Model 3. I told him I didn't want to have any bs issues to deal with and I'm glad my hunch was right. But still, seeing this is like seeing a teammate get injured in a game it really hurts to see a fellow Tesla supporter get treated this way, and it's making me seriously consider getting another Tesla as my next car. There's gotta be SOMETHING we can do to get this to Elon's attention right?! Maybe we can all spam his tweets like when people keep telling him to host Meme Reveiw? If you do really own stock, dump it, it lost 10% in the last week and the news on the horizon of layoffs (3,000) indicates Tesla is getting into a tailspin.
