It is amazing that anyone could still consider the Chinese as backwards, in military technology. Today's China is the same China that has a respectable space program - they have successfully landed unmanned exploration craft on the Moon - that is not an achievement to thumb your nose at. Even if the Chinese Air Force could only manage a kill ratio of 2:3 in America's favor, that would be a significant setback to US air power in the region, and perhaps even a kill ratio of 1:2 in the US' favor would still allow China to deny regional airspace to the United States. As your guest Justin Bronk makes clear, the Chinese only need to achieve parity with the West to obtain their goals, not supremacy. Concerning the Chinese Air Force's previous adherence to tactical manuals, it reads a bit like the Royal Navy's adherence to the Fighting Instructions and the Line Ahead formation - but it appears China is not waiting for a Nelson to free them from "the book". Lastly, Western contempt of China's airpower seems to echo the contempt that the West - or at least America - had for Japanese pilots and aircraft, on the Eve of Pearl Harbor...

US actually outnumbers China in combat aircraft, though (by a wide margin). Also, the US Pacific fleet, by itself and without reinforcement from the rest of the Navy, already has more naval tonnage and more combat power than the entire Chinese navy. China can't afford to take heavy losses because they don't have the #'s. The old "quantity has a quality of its own" adage might have worked for China in the Korean War, but this won't work for them in a modern conflict.

You can say the same for America during WW2. The Sherman and the rest of the armoured vehicles were shhhhttt. Shermans couldn't even fight properly against Tigers or fully equipped Panzer IVs. The only effective Sherman in the European theatre was the Firefly. Yet they won because Shermans outnumbered the Tigers and Panzers and pretty much drowned them with numbers. And funny enough, the Russian T-34 is actually far better than the Shermans. Even with Navies, the Royal Navy was far better than the US Navy. As for the Airforce, the only great plane America had was the Mustang but the Mustang's history was complicated with it being a failure and pure ssshhhhhtttt but only became good when they tried experimenting and put a British engine in the hood. Realistically speaking, the planes the Navy had especially for it's carriers weren't that good. They were only slightly better than the Japanese Zeroes. Plus the fact that they already know the disadvantages of Zeroes, have made methods and tactics to combat them, the shhhttt load of planes they managed to produce and the fact that Japan had the dummbbeessttt set of leaders who didn't take advantage and maintain their superior Zeroes properly is what helped the Navy win. In fact, American AAs were what shot down most of the Imperial Japanese Navy's planes and ironically enough most of their AAs aren't theirs or weren't their inventions. Much of their AAs (like the Orleikon 20mm and the Bofors 40mm) are Swiss/Italian and Swedish respectively.

G (Germans hate names and love numbers so don't get confused since you're not the only one), then the Sherman even the M4A4 ones would either be brutally murdered or at least had a rough time going up against a Panzer Battalion. Plus the Shermans weren't armored that greatly. For the most part, their skin is only 12.7mm thick and around 177.8mm on it's thickest location (which is at the side but only when attacked on it's slanted angle). And the Sherman's guns aren't that powerful and lacked range. Even the doctrine and strategies for use of the Shermans highly advice them to use their speed to their advantage and not act like tank killers. The only theatre they were doing actual good on their own is the Pacific theatre since Japanese tanks were weak and underdeveloped since money was funneled more to the Navy. And sure, there weren't a lot of Tigers back then but even with their fewer numbers, the kills they rack up when they are there is visibly apparent (of course if they survive or not get attacked by fighters or bombers or if their Jew-made parts weren't failing). And in terms of quality for parts, America may have a slight advantage especially with the fact that many Panzer, Tiger and other stuff were basically Jew-made or POW-made (meaning slaves who may not be the best workers) especially during the mid to late stages of the war, then the German parts may end up failing or have problems but in terms on paper or even on actual combat, they actually do reign supreme than the Shermans. The only reason the Western allies stood a chance is because, like I said, due to their immense numbers and the aid of the Air Force especially the fighters and bombers who can exploit all tank's weakness which is the top armor. Plus tank destroyers like the M10 helped in the fight as well.

Thats my thought too. It would be a mistake to think that China cant do theatre warfare. Its not like command and control during the 50s and 60s where the chinese army didnt even have rank in the armed forces and think like the Soviets with command coming from the centre. Its modern warfare now, dude.

They experimented with total equality during the 70s when rank and insignia was removed so that the officers and the average soldier dressed and ate the same. It did run into issues when the commanding officers dies in combat since they had confusion as to who is the next highest ranking officer to take the chain of command but that is only temporary.

Great video, great guest, and very timely video. Chinese missiles like pl-15 and pl-21 not only outclass Russia but usa and the west. China's doctrine is different to usa and russia, and thus this is part of chinas general long range area denial strategy with standoff strike munitions and weapons. Usa has no answer and is now scrambling, having dropped out of intermediate range missile treaty with Russia.

I knew a senior military personnel from Singapore and he told me that China's military is so much more powerful and advance than how some western fanboys were playing it down. As Thailand had constant joint air force exercise with China, Thailand was totally shocked by how powerful and capable the Chinese fighters were. Thailand operates the Saab Gripen and the Chinese jets were comparable to western fighters. Besides the engine which the Chinese is still improving, Chinese jets had overtaken the Russians in many aspects especially their avionics. Besides the air force, Chinese most deadly arsenal is their hypersonic long range missiles which is way ahead of the US! US was too complacent on their missiles development! We need professional and honest reviews like these, not some the fanboy's club bullshit putting lots of technical jargons copy and paste on their remarks as if the Chinese was still a rag tag army like 70 years ago during the Korean war.

JF-17 is an interesting plane it can do any role well but lacks the range so you need two drop tanks and have to pick between air or ground attack. The next block has more weapons pylons I think which will improve the plane a lot and make it truly multi role. One thing I think it has going for it is how easy it is to learn and fly. I bought it in dcs flight sim and it’s very intuitive to learn vs something like A10 or F-16. It has really nice off the shelf western style glass cockpit, so it feels like you are flying a modern leer jet with weapons, so it’s way easier to learn fast compared to something like F-16. It has cool selection of modern anti ship and other good anti air and air to ground weapons. You could probably train people to fly these planes in 1/8th or 1/4 of time of other planes which seems like a under appreciated factor. In huge peer to peer war as we’ve seen previously pilots are often in short supply in previous wars. I imagine in a scenario something like ww2 where they are coming off the assembly line daily and you need them on the front fast, this ease of learning would be a good trait.

Another fantastic video, with proper insight. Very, very well done, the both of you. As a sugestion for kind of a "continuation" video, because the chinese are in fact improving (or at least doing big changes) every year in pretty much everything, I would like to also see what are your opinions on the chinese upgrade in military transport, not only in new airplanes, but also in doctrine. I remember seeing in a publication a chinese official stating that the new 4 engine transport aircraft was capable of "taking a MBT from China to Angola". A way to pot pressure? And exactly put pressure where, or in who? I believe this is the first time ever the chinese air force flexes it's muscles as a way to project military power into another continent. I would love to hear your opinion here, maybe in a continuation video. Again, thank you for a fantastic job. It is a pleasure and a privilege to follow this channel.
