Why The U.S. Unemployment System Is Failing

Many of the over 36 million people who filed unemployment claims have not yet received benefits. In fact, only 29% of unemployed Americans received benefits in March. The original design of the Unemployment Insurance system was not created to sustain such an influx of claims. During this crisis, state trust funds will be depleted and they may have to borrow from the Federal Government to be able to meet their obligations.

In Canada, if you've been laid off for any reason during this pandemic, you're entitled to the CERB (Covid-19 Emergency Response Benifit) which is a flat $2000 CAD a month. We haven't had to wait or fight for it - it was just given to us during our time of need. Everything has gone pretty smoothly. I wish it was the same in the United States.

Your skewed perspective of things is half true and half wrong! 1. American low wages is drasitcally different that other countires low wages. 400$ a month is low income here in US, that's what some people make in a year around the world. Things are drastically different here and western countries than around the world. 2. We also have a lot of food shelters, and other programs that some countries don't even have to support those in need. Food banks, shelters, low income housing, rent control( I don't agree with but helps some in short term causes more problems in long term), etc. 3. American's have a lot of debt and a lot of bad spending habits too. They have also been pushed to believe that college is neccessary and collecting huge amounts of debt is necessary to succeed. These things add to the problem. If they didn't have bad spending habits and huge sums of debt they might have more savings and be able to survive on what they are recieving because remember not everyone that applies is always completely without a job, they might have lost one of their two part times jobs and they need something temporarily until they are able to cover the expenses again. 4.There are a lot of safety nets.......they just weren't designed to have so many people rely on them at one time over a very short period of time. 5. It's also up to the states to help out too and as a lot of states are being run terribly financially, which makes it harder for people be protected. The nation can help states out,but it's really up to the state to maintain their operations and financial protection programs to prevent it from over burdening the rest of the country. There is a bit of a trend between liberal run states having more debt and therefore not being able to protect their citizens more. More debt means more state loans/even more debt, more taxes, or LESS services and less of a safety net or less pay out from those safety nets. Generally Illinois, New York and California some of the highest debt in the country out of any states. Rhode Island is up there too a lot and texas, but these states have lower taxes too. California is doing best out of the three because it's GDP is so high so it has a lot of room for error and debt mistakes and for accumulating more debt. The other two listed liberal states don't have as much running room. worldpopulationreview.com/states/debt-by-state/ www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2016/12/10/best--and-worst-run-states/95207486/

*Keep in mind: The "decision makers" during this crisis all have the means to hop in a jet, at a moment's notice, and abscond to a private estate in New Zealand, for example.* With plenty of food, and filtered water. Private runway and an awaiting staff of glorified indentured servants. Many have personal security details. These are people whom have not driven themselves in a car for decades, perhaps never. They've never gone grocery shopping, or clothes shopping. Nor have they ever cleaned a window, or cooked a meal. Goes without saying that most have never worked a day in their lives. Nor have their children and extended family. (That doesn't include pretend "jobs" they CHOOSE to perform, e.g., Trustees, Board Members, or CxOs. *THESE are the people making the decisions whether OUR CHILDREN will be stuffed into a potentially-deadly, toxic Petri dish.* Our children's lives mean nothing to them, nor do they care for the lives of our troops. Whom they shower with phony praise as to keep the poverty-draft flowing. Those whom they send to "defend America" (mostly from fictional or blowback-related "enemies") while they actually murder foreigners to increase the profits and equity of the Ruling Class. (See: Iraq 1 & 2, Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan, Syria. They ALWAYS NEED WAR for their precious growth. Lest this disgusting plastic economy built on debt will die.) *All so that their stocks continue to rise. So "their profits" roll in. Those profits belong to Us, the Workers.* Workers must bind together in solidarity. OUR labor produces products and services. Year, after year, the fruit of our labors is inequitably distributed to the capitalist owner class. As THEY decide the distribution. WE ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN. We have the POWER to stop it. They KNOW IT. Which is why they spend vast sums to misinform Americans. Propaganda built to separate workers. Along gender/color/race/religion/cultural lines. WHATEVER THEY CAN USE to keep us at each other's throats. Most famous of these divisions is Republican/Democrat. When, in the end, these two parties are ACTUALLY ONE. A duopoly serving oligarch masters. WE allow this to continue. WE can END IT. With Solidarity. This is not the fault of China. Just as AIDS is not the fault of the US. Yet we are being played again. Told to blame China. I blame the ignorant. I blame the system which AS A RULE, AS A FUNDAMENTAL, can NOT stockpile masks, ventilators, antibacterial wipes, etc., *BECAUSE IT IS NOT PROFITABLE.* That is where the blame lies, along with the hesitation to lockdown initially, lest they lose their precious profits we all work so hard to provide them.

It's called a bottleneck and anyone who spent even a few minutes looking at the relief bill knew it would happen. Those in power just didn't care.

If someone abuses a tax deduction that only rich people use, let's cancel that deduction for everybody for the next two years. That's how some politicians talk about food stamps and other safety net items.

Even the very few people I do know who started receiving benefits- they only got 1 or 2 weeks worth of benefits & then it just stopped & they got nothing more. 😬 This isn’t humane People suffering greatly How do you Survive on $0 for 3 months or more ?? It was propped up on underpaid workers mostly. Now that means they have no emergency funds so when enough of the go jobless they need government help, only they allowed tax games that meant they didn't collect the taxes needed to provide those benefits. And yet most of the spending various companies make money off of come from those same underpaid poor. If we had a decent min wage for long enough leading up to this and were collecting sufficient taxes from the top tier companies we would have much less of an economic problem right now and throwing away lives by re-opening to early wouldn't even be on the table.

@@taoist32 Actually, Clinton left with a surplus and a plan to have that surplus money earmarked to pay back into SocSec. The plan was to set it up so that SocSec would remain solvent forever. Bush decided to use that money as a slush fund, create expensive programs with no plan to fund them (Medicaid Part D), and lowered taxes too much on top of all of that. He also did not raise taxes as he should have when we went to war in the ME. War isn't free, but he acted like it was, and kept a lot of the cost of the war 'off the books', so on paper it didn't look so bad. If government programs never worked, Medicaid would not work, the military would not work, the interstate highway system would never have been built, the Hoover Dam never would have been built, the space program would never have gotten off the ground, there would be no protected park land, etc. We just have lunatics that keep getting voted in on the premise that they'll 'lower taxes', then the rubes look around and wonder why the infrastructure is falling to pieces and their government's IT sector never gets updated equipment.
