Why ‘The Simpsons’ is Funnier in Spanish

“The Simpsons” has been a staple of American pop culture for nearly three decades. As the longest running animated show, Homer Simpson’s dumb/drunk antics and penchant for donuts has made him arguably the most recognizable character on television. But beyond the United States, the show has become a worldwide sensation, with some of the biggest fans hailing from Latin America. That’s all thanks to Humberto Vélez, the voice behind Homero Simpson. Using his own life experiences, Humberto has tailored the perspective and humor of Homero Simpson to relate to Latin American culture. How do you say “d’oh!” in Spanish?

    It's hard to say something is funnier than the original way it's supposed to be consumed however the Simpsons in Spanish is fucking hilarious. Whenever I would go visit Mexico pretty like 90% of the programming on tv was obviously in Spanish and all of the cartoons were dubbed over, the Simpsons was by far the one that would make me laugh the most. Most of the dubbed cartoons were ok but something about the Simpsons in Spanish had its own magic that actually made it very enjoyable to watch. The Simpsons and DBZ in Spanish were essential anytime I was down there

    "It's hard to say something is funnier than the original way it's supposed to be consumed" That's not necesarily true. Think of simpsons episode staring celebrities (not talking about the lady gaga one, but older episodes with less famous celebrities) and politicians, like american presidents and stuff. All of those episodes are full of inside jokes about them that the american public it's supposed to know. Those episodes were scripted thinking about the american consumers. Hence your sentence may be correct but incomplete. Of course we in latin america are not going to get all those references on lets say, the mel gibson episode, or that one when homer falls froma plane and crush into a house in the middle of the forest, were 2 celebrities are living. So much is naturally lost in translation there, and you only can access it explaining every gag and joke, killing it in the process

  • @jaywood5831

    @jaywood5831

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@RocKnMetaL97 that's why I don't like saying something is funnier, I just like saying both things are very funny. When it comes to things like this, what people grow up with plays a huge part in what they prefer and if something was originally made to be consumed in a specific way and had so much success that it demanded it to be made in different languages, I would be hard pressed to say the is any way better than the original. That doesn't mean dubbed version of a show cant be just as funny in it's own unique way, but I don't think you can say it's better than the original especially when the original is the biggest reason for the success. Take Shrek for example, the Spanish version to me is hilarious and easily just as funny if you understand the humor, but the English version has had such a lasting cultural impact in the meme culture here in America that I can't possibly say it's better. My original post was me trying to say I think the Spanish version is just as funny but not necessarily better. At the end of the day, comedy is subjective and it's hard to compare two things when the style of humor is completely different.

    i'm really interested in voice acting, and specifically how dubbing in different languages changes certain parts of it. as a bilingual person it's so cool to see how different shows had to be localized and translated to not only keep the same meaning but to also have the same tone and feeling of the original dialogue.

    @Pappy They wanted more money. They rather hire actors that didn't ask for much. HOWEVER, it happened right at about the time when "The Simpsons Died" (there's some KZread video about it), even in English, when it wasn't funny anymore. I don't think the old cast could have saved the show. So, at least, the best episodes got the best actors :3 (except for Lisa... I mean, I love Lisa's voice, and she remained for a long while after that, so she's both in the best episodes and bad episodes.)

  • @Yntec

    @Yntec

    5 жыл бұрын

    @Pappy Ha! I wouldn't know, I haven't actually watched anything from season 14 onwards because season 13 was so bad that I quit. Now that I'm binge watching the whole thing I'll watch those episodes I missed, but one thing is clear, the decline of the show is gradual but clarly apparent, and I can mark 9x15 "The Last Temptation of Krust" as the first, truly bad episode of the Simpson, where every single joke missed and all the "good jokes" and "bad jokes" were terrible. I didn't watch the Simpsons because of the comedy, I watched them because I was invested in the characters, and their stories, that was broken when it became about the jokes, and then the jokes became bad. The weird thing is it happened much earlier to me than to other people, I guess what is "unwatchable" is a matter of taste XD What I'd love to see is a "reset". Say, Season 31 we pretend that only the first season happened, and make episodes that would fit right in for Season 2 (so you wouldn't see all the star cameos and crap of later seasons). For season 32 we pretend that only season 1 and 2 happened, and so on. #MakeTheSimpsonsGreatAgain , instead of just ending the series on a flop. And what about allowing them to grow up?? Bart gets 11, Lisa gets 9, grampa simpson actually dies, some families leave and new ones join in, let the story advance and this be about it and not the gags! It could be exciting instead of letting them go like this, and this comes from someone that has yet to watch the last 16 seasons of the show O_O

Es increíble el trabajo de Humberto y realmente digno de admiración y profundo respeto. 🙂🙂

In Argentina and Bolivia means little kid and also a bag or cart to go shopping groceries. In Puerto Rico means joker or uneducated person. In Honduras, someone with fancy clothes. The beauty lies in the fact that despite whatever Chango means we understood what Homer was saying by the great voice acting!

    This video doesnt make it clear "why its funnier" so lemme try to explain it. In the original latin american dub the voice actors where given a lot of freedom to "translate" the english jokes and phrases, thanks to that the old Simpsons became so iconic because of the words and expressions used. Something similar happened with the first seasons of adventure time, the voice actors had freedom to translate the dialogue as they pleased and now their phrases became iconic too. Just to put an example, in one episode (the one where gunter takes the ice king's evil eye collar and attacks the kingdom) while ice king says "you took my stuff!" in latin american he says "¡Te volviste reggetonero!" (which in english it would be like saying "You became a rapper!"

    it is funnier when you compare the Simpsons’s dubbing to a show with more literal translation. Good translators (for books, diplomats, lyrics ) know when to change the words and phrases as to keep the author’s meaning and emotion behind it. Some movies are much worse off after being translated when the dinners use a literal translation. Just like bad anime dubbings

I'm not sure how much context is lost in translation and I don't know how well Sci Fi jokes of Futuramas caliber works in other languages. You gotta remember. @@samynator0904 The translations from Japanese, Korean, Mandarin etc to English are almost always nowhere near as good as the original and yes some translations and context is totally lost between them. Whole the English vdub might have cooler voices they definalty don't have cooler lines. It's why the Dragon Ball japanese subs are far superior to English dubs because In English the entire tone of the show is changed because Gokus character is saying stuff he normally wouldn't say and the music is also different. I get this a lot between movies. Mainly when it's a language that's translated to English. I almost never watch an English Dub because of this. The last dub I watched was Baki The Grappler on Netflix. The English dub radically changed the tone of the show to some WWE stuff which is fine, but it makes you wonder what the original intent was as I haven't actually watched it in Japanese yet.
