Why the Seawolf Class Is the F-22 of Submarines?

Ғылым және технология

The Seawolf-class submarines boast the advanced BQQ 5D sonar system, highlighted by its impressive 24-foot-diameter bow-mounted spherical array for both active and passive detection. Additionally, these submarines are enhanced with wide-aperture passive flank arrays. As part of their upgrades, they're now integrating the TB-29A thin-line towed array sonar systems. The BQS 24 sonar further complements their capabilities, especially for detecting close-range threats like mines.
Originally, the ship's combat data was managed by the Lockheed Martin BSY-2, powered by a network of seventy Motorola 68030 processors-interestingly, the same ones used in early Macintosh computers. This system is now transitioning to the more advanced AN/BYG-1 Weapons Control System.
Designed as ultimate underwater predators, these submarines are equipped with eight torpedo tubes, which is twice as many as their predecessors. They can carry a diverse arsenal including up to fifty Mark 48 heavyweight torpedoes, Sub-Harpoon antiship missiles, and Tomahawk missiles. If needed, some of this payload can be swapped out for mines."

Those submarines are outdated, their sonar signature well known, their sensors outdated, the internal equipment outdated, etc. The new Virginia class are a much better and more modern deal that offer capabilities the sea wolf class didn’t have.

When I heard 30.5 meters, I burst out laughing - Christ it's a tardis! The boat is 353 ft (108 m), and the Jimmy Carter is 452.8 ft (138.0 m) I'd have loved it to be 30.5 meters, cos it would've been some frigin miracle they'd worked 😄

We have locally a “streetcar” agency that has two old trolly cars. There used to be three but one is a parts donor. It’s considered a “hobby train”. The USA has three seawolfs, two operational and one hit a sea mount, because top notch navy leadership allowed sloppy nuke sub operations. One of the sea wolfs is usually in maintenance (like all submarines must be at times) so we have one. One sea wolf. So that makes it something of a hobby submarine. Powerful, sure, but still it’s like having just one tank. We could have more (150 Billion for Ukraine) billions for CRT, micro aggression, drag queen recruitment plus billions and billions and billions for the useless failed LCS. Still, nice video on the USN hobby fleet.. tx

I don't believe the SeaWolf will ever be obsolete as it has capabilities all other subs do not have. All other classes cannot engage the number of targets a SW can simultaneously. When we finally do have a Naval confrontation with China, targeting and engaging multiple ships at once is going to be essential.

Unfortunately like the F-22 they were the best of the best ever made at the wrong time due to the collapse of the Soviet Union the US Congress swallowed the post Cold War blue pill

Targeting and engaging multiple ships at once was groundbreaking in the 1980s, it isn’t anymore. All the sensors aboard the SW are obsolete, its sonar signature well known, etc. It would literally be beaten by a diesel electric sub from the 2000s. “The capabilities others do t have..” is just good old US propaganda, the same propaganda that tells you that an Arleigh Burke flight one is better than a modern ship, just BS. It is just a way to excuse the USN to operate such expensive and outdated subs towards the US public.

What does one have to do with the other? Engineering is extreme precision through calculation. Humanity cannot be "engineered" to be peaceful. Humans like to fight. It's why I'm arguing with you right now.
