Why THE ORVILLE Made A BIG Change
Ойын-сауық
Seth McFarlane's sci-fi show (now on Hulu) went through a huge change from the first season to now it's third season - New Horizon. The show started out adopting a lot of McFarlane's usual comedic tone, but quickly shifted to something far more dramatic and serious. The show has altered its course and honestly, for the better. I go over why The Orville made the change and why it was for the betterment of the show.

The Orville is one of my favorite shows on television. It is so funny to me how I remember loathing the first episode. It had some bonkers sex jokes, goofy, out of place humor and just didn't feel even to me. It has changed dramatically (specifically late season one, going into season two) and is telling some phenomenal stories on various forms of social commentary. I really enjoy this show and honestly, the change is for the BETTER. Thanks as usual to everyone for supporting me. It means a lot. Special shoutout to all those who support me on Patreon. I never really had a big issue with the humor. At first there were a few places where it was definitely out of place but as it went on I think they had a pretty damn good balance of it and I kind of miss it to be honest. I feel like Seth had a great talent of putting humor in while maintaining the seriousness of the episode. No more hermit the frog on his desk. He will be missed by me at least.

Seth loved TNG and it shows with The Orville. He has essentially continued making that show in his own mold. There's a real place for that, especially for fans of TNG who wanted more. BUT, there's also a need for Star Trek to move beyond TNG and I think we need that was well. The Paramount shows have their problems and sometimes try too hard to be a different flavor of Trek but I think they are starting to figure it out, especially with Strange New Worlds.

Overall, I miss the comedy, but I think that the greater story unfolding in-universe is enough reason to be more toned down and serious. I mean, they are constantly reminded of how screwed they are if the Kaylons attack again. They run into issue after issue within The Union, and their old enemy the Krill are back to being a major problem. I miss the comedy, but I’m hoping that if/when things slow down it can return, even if it remains a bit more somber overall after everything the crew has been through.

Season 3 seemed too heavy though. And the promise of exploration never happened. Instead, we revisit all of season 1 and 2's plots, episode by episode as if they are being re-done. The writing is top tier and there are no technical faults, but it does get a bit boring at times. Just sprinkle in some alien fart jokes. What set orville apart from trek is that, at its core, trek is never believable. The characters are too rigid and perfect. *No one* would spend their downtime reading a 400 year old vulcan philosophy book. More likely, they'd synthesize a pot brownie, then reprogram Data to dab every time he said "Yes, Captain."
I have loved the Orville since season 1 episode 1! Half way thru the pilot, I said aloud, “it’s Star Trek!” (Which I know that it isn’t, but it is a brilliant pastiche), and I have been hooked ever since. I think that the Orville has really hit its stride in Season 3! It is taking itself more seriously, with the comedy still present but toned down, and less frequently used, which I think makes the jokes that are there even funnier! This show has found its footing, and is able to play in the sandbox that it built for maximum value. The first two seasons were almost best split into four half seasons, with each half season being better than the half season before it. Now, season 3 is outstanding! I want several more seasons of this show, and I hope that they renew it for more seasons!

While I was thinking of the comment I wished to write, I read yours. You say it beautifully. I especially agree with your "four half seasons" description. As a fan of TOS Star Trek. I was pleased Orville had the episodic format without a heavy story arc through out each season, but with the subtle character development to keep me interested. Season three has become so good and at times so intense I don't think I could binge watch it, I need it small doses to keep me from od'ing off the edge of my seat! I really miss the humor of previous seasons but the production quality has gotten better in season 3.
I think the change works within the show too. It started off as a crew of explorers that didn't have to take themselves or their mission too seriously. But through a series of events they have found themselves at the forefront of the most important mission the galaxy has ever seen and they have adapted accordingly. I love that character development for all of them. They stay true to their lighthearted explorers selves whilst also growing and showing that they are on the Orville because of their particular exceptionalism.

Sorry but Stargate Sg1 >>> Orville. Nothing wrong with Orville, but it never took it's tech or overarching storytelling serious enough.
I think Seth has always wanted this show to be a tribute to Gene Roddenberry and the ideals he set forth with Star Trek. The surprise is how wonderful it's really been to see Seth mature as a writer to the point where it can still be humorous and exciting but he can also hold attention with a very human story in almost every episode. This is terrific stuff that I feel has come to full fruition in season 3, thanks to the move to hulu, and I hope there are many more years and explorations, both of the galaxy and the human experience, to come
I loved the first season. I kind of needed that light heart comedy.
Personally, I liked the humor. I was concerned they were trying to out "trek" Star Trek by eliminating that humor, But after what I've seen for this 3rd season I can understand why they felt they needed to downplay that part of the show. I hope it's not gone forever and entirely. I'll still need An occasional comic bit.

First, "personally" does not belong in the first sentence because it can be deleted without changing the meaning. Second, I think what happened here was McFarlane figured he had a better chance getting the show made if he sold it as built around the humor that made him famous and he intended to scale that jokiness back if things went well so he could make the show he really wanted to - a lovely sci-fi series with elements he admires from successful shows.

I love this show so much 😭 great video!
Season 3 episode 9 was amazing! I really hope Disney makes a couple more seasons.
The one thing that the first season did that I thought was good was to stress that the characters had realistic flaws and personalities that weren't just cookie cutter images of one another. Being locked up in a ship that has no humorous times or unexpected practical jokes between fellow crew members would quickly create a group of self destructive psychopaths that would justify the Kaylon desire for extermination of biologic beings. With times as grim as what the Union is facing, the need for humor, even gallows or toilet humor may be just what is needed to help pull them through.
IDK how people complain about the little humor in season 1 and 2. The show was never a comedy or a parody, it had great storylines, great acting, real science and often a very serious tone. We need a little light heartedness. Enough serious stuff going on in the world already.
Don't you get it, we don't want to see social commentary on our shows, we have enough of this shit on social and mainstream media. I was Orville fan, now I'm not anymore. Same for Expanse, sadly :/
I love how The Orville had evolved and developed since season 1. I was excited when it started and years later it is one, if not, my favorite show. It has a little bit of everything from comedy to action, but with season 3, I felt and lot more heartfelt moments that really hit you in the feels. This is easily a series that could have 10 seasons if they wanted to. If we don't get a season 4, season 3 went off as a perfect goodbye.

I did the same thing I thought the first two episodes were abysmal. But then it changed and I mean for the better with that more serious tone. I never dreamed I'd love a TV show the way I love that show.
I watched the first 2 episodes when it came out, but it didn’t really hold my interest. I finally tried it again as season 2 came out and actually really enjoyed it. However the tone in season 3 has shifted DRAMATICALLY, but in a really good way. The world we live in is messy and I’ve always appreciated this show as a more realistic/down to earth representation of what future humanity would actually be like. Which means you’re going to have big moral issues to deal with. It’s done really well in the show and I think it sends a great message to the audience.
It is always nice to see a show 'grow up'. Even without the FX budget, the writing and acting has improved. OMFSM, DOLLY PARTON! Back in the day 'City on the edge of forever' was noted for a female star giving her best. And now we have Dolly playing a short but important roll. I have watched 'Strange New Worlds' and 'Orville' and to be honest I think 'Orville' has been better. And oddly SNW went more comedy than Orville this year. The Orville is starting to have a preachy feel to like the original trek did back in the 60s . It takes guts to make a show like that in today's climate. My hope is MacFarlane doesn't get culture canceled in the process.
They promoted season one as a "parody" of star trek, and now season 3 is basically star trek
And what makes Orville and its stories so great, is McFarlin does it in the Original Star Trek style. The Main message starts off being an Undertone of the story, instead of BAM, here it is, Like or not. And the show working out as if the B or C half of the story, instead of keeping it as the Main drive.
My favorite episode, for political commentary, was the one where the citizens of the entire planet were wearing "Like/Dislike" buttons, and their success depended on collecting enough Likes, and enough Dislikes meant lobotomy. Twitter, anyone? The most perfect aspect of it was taking the crew-member on a World-Wide "Apology Tour" in hopes of erasing some Dislikes. Sound familiar?

Throughout the first two seasons it felt like Seth was slowly transitioning from focusing on goofy comedy to focusing on more serious storytelling. Every episode felt more and more like old school Star Trek than the previous one. I liked season 1 and 2 better. I don't think the show would become just another 'family guy' series. I think handling difficult issues with humor is a unique way to smooth things out. But I really miss the humor which balanced the heavy issues in season 1 and 2. The Orville turned from Comedy to true Sci-Fi TV series and I love It even more now.
Season 1 Orville is what made the show so different from any other basic space show and even now they keep that which shows how the show evolved yet kept its own feeling which is what I like the most about it
the third season hit hard on an emotional level, which I did not expect. Topa's journey, Gordon's wife & child that existed and kinda didn't (I always wanted them to give Scott Grimes more screen time and a love story - and they did! It made me very happy but also sad), the relationship between the crew members, Kelly's decision to bring them all back together, the relationship between Claire & Isaac, everything I wanted and more :) One of the best (underrated) shows
im on ep 5 of season 1 and i dont like how fast the plot of the episodes feel :/ aside from that i really dig it but... do the rest of the episodes feel like that?
The season we have now is a lot closer to how Seth Macfarlane wanted The Orville to be, to begin with... but because it had to avoid direct rip off of Star Trek, it had to be sold as a parody... and too many people still think of the show as that to this very day and even get annoyed there is less over the top humor this season. I find it very odd when that was what was often dismissed in the first season. I like where things are at, but maybe a bit more humor spreadout is not a bad thing but not 4th wall breaking humor like a family guy episode. The show is reaching the potential I always wanted to be more like the show it is obviously the most strongly influenced by... 90's era Star Trek. And people are complaining and even leaving the show in some cases... this fandom is so weird sometimes.
The orville in this new Hulu season is feeling alot more like a cross between STNG and DS9. DS9 being my #1 ST experience... Better scripts with the more crew interactions and character arc common in DS9. Plus seth has some of the writers from STNG and DS9 onboard fully now.
The Orville and its endearing characters with good writing is just great sci fi. Sure there were a few silly plot episodes like urinating once a year for Moclans, and some antics like Mr Potato Head on the robot, however most episodes in season 2 and 3 were very solid and among the best in sci fi of series out there. Hoping for renewal and more seasons. (oh, and instead of 10 episodes at 1 hr. 10 minutes each in S-3, I would rather get 15 episodes at 45 minutes just so I can watch more of them week to week. Hooked on Orville!!).

I cant agree with you enough -- I was so close to turning away for good because of the humor. I used to like family guy, but Its grown tiresome and seemed ... just out of place in this show. Now, to me, this is the only sci fi I will watch. I really love it.
The humor is pretty much gone in season 3, and what they do have generally falls flat. The only thing that had me cracking up, was Talla and John's relationship. That final scene that left him black and blue after sex made me laugh so much my sides hurt.
Now this is start trek not the bs they give us in discovery this show is just bliss to watch screw the critics compared to any shows lately this is the best
Orville's first episode is the best 'first episode' that ever aired. "Sorry, still learning names." is such a clever joke. Because their audience is new to the show, they definitely still don't know about the characters. The delivery of that joke was so brilliant, yet subtle.
I remember loving the part where the navigator was showing Cpt Seth the ship... while drinking beer. Sold me on it. (1st episode).
The S3 episode with Gordon being left back in time with his "family" and not wanting to leave... that episode was excellent. Plus, this season is the last time we will ever hear voice over from Norm Macdonald(RIP).
I love season 3 show upgrades, but bring back a lil more comedy too. Like season 1 & 2. You can do both
S2 was GOLD.
It's crazy how so many people, after watching season 3, said it lowered in quality which I honestly can't see why. It was a great send off to the series, yet still left off some things that could still be explored later on. The series tonal shift wasn't even that bad, and it was to be expected as they had to close off a lot more of the serious undertons from pervious seasons. In my opinion, it was a good season overall.
If you asked me what my least favorite episode of season 3 is, it would take me a day to figure out an answer because they all have been really good.
I love this new Orville, In fact I like it better than all the NEW Star Trek shows.
I have loved it from the beginning but I couldn’t be happier where we are with it now! This is quickly turning into a favourite to me that leaves me feeling new emotions every episode. 👍
Love your style of reviews! :D Got a sub.

That means the world to me. Thank you!
This show is now perfect and I want another season so bad.
As Ed began to venture more into the galaxy and relationships developed it is logical that the contwxt grew tense which made the chsnge quite smooth, noticeable but smooth
Storys of Transhumanism and Transexuality have existed from early SciFi so in that sense the Orville is no different, however its timing and handling of these topics is dubious once you are aware we have been pushed in a certain direction with such entertainment for decades by global interests, while they are not bad episodes they do signal a particular demographic. The Orville is already a large part of SciFi and so the ethos and episodes in question will have an effect on an increasing number over time contributing to the plans to soften us up for invasive tech and gender fluidity.
Its dark and depressing. If i wanted that i watch all the new Star Trek bull they have. Being a comedy is what made it stand out
I miss the old show. Season 3 had too much social justice warrior in it. I get bombarded with that every time I open my tablet or phone.
I've never actually watched The Orville, but, for some reason, I've recently started watching Orville clips on KZread. It looks interesting.
I really dont get ppl complaining about the humor in S1. It's not like Marvel where the joke derived the scene of its tension. Also it wasn't like the jokes messed with the plot. They had to make a difference with Star Trek in some way so it's not just Trek rip off. Sure alot of the jokes didn't land, but at least it wasn't annoying. The jokes weren't some improvised bullshit(like Thor) only the actors find funny, but all of it had setup and payoffs. Also Orville still has jokes. Very good ones actually.
The “Monopoly on Grief” line was so goooood
When the Orville was first announced I thought it would be nothing more than ”Family Guy in Space.” But as the series progressed I found that slap stick humor was kept to a minimum. This was especially true in season 2 & 3, and I appreciated that.
Yup noticed everything you pointed out. And, I agree about the interpretation of the message being different on every belief. Best example is Topa. The Left can interpret them in their one way, but the Right can also interpret it in their favor the other way. However, I do kind of lament the amount of humor lost, though it's still OK.
It's important to note that TNG, DS9, Vger, and Disco all didn't hit their stride until season 3. Can you imagine 7 seasons of The Orville?
I, and a number of my friends, tend to say that The Orville is more like Star Trek than Star Trek currently is. I have noticed it's gotten more serious, but the storytelling is superb and highly reminiscent of ultimate Star Trek. The show did well w/character development w/out spending too much time on it and patiently worked its plots and subplots while exploring and showcasing social issues that made it thought-provoking instead of invasive.
I had a similar experience and enjoyed it so much more with the new direction. I would appreciate more seasons.
I have been re-watching seasons 1 and 2 of the Oroville lately because I missed the humor. The humor was the only thing that made the Orville a more creative, clever, and unique sci-fi franchise then Star Trek and Black Mirror that it's trying to copy off of. I used to watch the Orville because it was a comfort show to me. It would distract me from the real life problems we were facing socially, politically and economically.. and just to have that constant reminder in your face during season 3 was just painful. The show now has good action, and very good editing, acting, but overall it's whole plot of intense action goes nowhere and overall it's very boring to watch when you're expecting some smiles out of the season. I like the fact that the show is trying to experiment with its perimeters. But with all franchises they just never really work out. The humor in the shorter episodes What drew the first fan base to the Orville to begin with, and to have that just change in a heartbeat is just depressing to me. Also the show in season 3 keeps beating a dead horse with some of its topics. Such as time travel, changing the timeline, etc. And also self keeps putting the matters of suicide and politics in his shows. Like is this man okay? He first experimented all of this in Family Guy , and now he's pushing it into the Orville. Isaac who can't feel and hurts himself? Wow ok... Just saying I miss the comedy, the original theme, Alara. And there's really no real character development at all for some of its characters. Look at Talla for example, instead of having an episode of her own to where we can see more of her develop and change and grow throughout the entire season we instead get a thing with her and John. Which went no where, despite giving me the comedy I craved.

sorry you feel that way but as someone who has unplugged completely from Hollywood because of all of their propaganda I can get where you're coming from. However I find for me with the Orville that the topics tha they touch on, while they are everyday ones just like original Trek, it is done tastefully and does not promote an outright agenda. There have been a few times in which I fully expected the writers and the episode to follow the usual trope that Hollywood enjoys telling lately only to be pleasantly surprised by exceptional storytelling and great acting. If you're complaining about social, poltiical, economical and time travel episodes, then perhaps the issue isnt with Orville but rather this type of show in general, as it's in the same vein as TNG, ToS, DS9 and even Battlestar Galatica. But if you're looking for a scifi show that will allow you to truly escape the dredges of today's bullshit, then may I suggest you watch Stargate SG1 and Atlantis. First season, little rough for SG1 but stick it through, it lasted 10 years for a reason. And if you have already watched it, then may I suggest you rewatch it as Ive done countless times ;)

@@The_Zilli thank you very much for your recommendations! They sound very interesting and maybe one day thanks to your word I will give him a watch if I ever find the time. I may be a little harsh on the Orville I just really miss the comedy yet I still wanted to be renewed because this is one of the best shows I've ever seen.
Season 3 has been a complete let down. Instead of focusing on telling a good story and holding on to what made it great fun to watch it has become a soap box for the writer to preach *beat us over the head* with his/her 's version of morality and ethics.
No, no the change in there show was not for the better. They did everything that they're doing in the third season for 2 seasons already. The difference between then and now is that it used to be discussed, not preached. It used to be fun and light hearted, not self absorbed and dramatic. It used to have humor, now it's just depressing. It used to be well written, and have a tightly constructed narrative with intelligent, well written characters. This season has thrown literally all of that out the window to hear 3 characters bitching about bullshit for no reason while the whole crew goes out of its way to make the worst decisions possible. And backpedal the development of other characters. Now, you give me one god damn reason for this that isn't Disney, because 2 seasons tell me seth MacFarlane can write.
I loved the first two seasons….New Horizons blows them out of the water. If this doesn’t get picked up for season 4, I’ll be baffled
I love how he is handling the social and political commentary. He presents it in a way that you may not even realize what it is you're watching, and lets you decide what's right for yourself. Star Trek used to be this way, but now there is nothing subtle about it, they are shoving morality down their viewers throats and telling them what to think, and throwing in things just to check boxes.
I need to rewatch everything so I can go into Season 3 with my knowledge refreshed, but there was an episode from the first two seasons where they found this phone from the 21st century and used it to explore this woman's life - that was some amazing storytelling. I don't mind the humor. Having been in the military for 20 years, I can tell you that if we stood up a Starfleet, that humor would be in space with us.
McFarlane might not have been able to sell The Orville as a genuine Sci-fi Adventure series; Studios would have dismissed it as "same-old same-old". His decision to pitch it as a spoof was a brilliant way to get his foot through the door. The Orville has really hit its stride, as a solid Sci-fi franchise.
I do hope they keep some of the comedy. It's a perfect mix.
Yes, I , too quit watching the first episode half way through and walked away. About a year later, someone convinced me to give it another go, and while I still found it off putting, I did as she asked and stayed with it and I'm glad I did, after the 4th or 5th episode, the. humor was more balanced and I was on board and binged the first season to catch up to the second. This season, though, has been stellar. I freakin hated Klyden and then all of a sudden, he almost had me crying. Same with Charley, her one-note treatment of Isaac got really old really fast, then she went and did what she did. Those kind of character arcs are what we love about storytelling. I want to see how Teleya's arc ends, will she or won't she evolve beyond her present mindset? I mean if Kaylon Primary can 'see the light', maybe she'll do something noble. Or not. I'm really looking forward to finding out. I hope this show has a few more seasons, I'm not ready for it to end.
The third season is hands down their best season so far. The character arc of Charly Burke is absolutely brilliant and meaningful. I have always liked Star Trek, watched every episode of every series, but I’ve never once been as invested in a season as Season 3 of the Orville. The writing and acting…I wish all tv was this good.
Twice in a Lifetime was the best episode this season. Ed and Gordon's conflict was genuine and deepened the character's personalities. Ed Mercer was merciless in enforcing the Union Rules and preserving the time stream calling on Gordan to kill his son and family in the time stream Gordan had traveled. Ed and Kelly would use the ship's security officer to physically remove Gordan from his wife and family home. My only critique was the final end once Gordan is returned to Orville and the three of them are drinking. It seems Ed and Kelly have intact memories of the repeated trips through time, while Gordan has no recollection of his family. I would have preferred a final shot of the usual happy & Go lucky Gordan leaving the room and whispering his son's name while alone in a moment of remorse.
With the Orville moving to Disney+ on August 10th (all 3 seasons, so far) it's hard to say whether or not it'll be renewed for a 4th season - which I hope it is. I also hope that Disney allows Seth to continue the excellent storytelling which he brought to season 3, which just ended today. (8-4-22)
Im a bit confused. Do you like the third season or dislike the third season? I think Orville is great. The third season has been a great joy to watch.

I love it. I am sorry if that came off confusing.
I’m so loving this series !!!! I am so rdy for that next season already!
Not really, it's just you. Show was always a great interplay between comedy and drama. You just have to have enough heart to notice.
Your not the only one ,our Members from Arrowsmith Station Star Trek fan club love the show, characters, etc..
You know, I'm getting the feeling you don't really understand the situation Seth MacFarlane was in when the Orville was first created. The Orville was always supposed to be a show centred around social, political, ethical and moral issues. But.. MacFarlane was seen as a comedian and encountered trouble escaping this stereotype he was getting forced into.. Selling the Orville as a modern version of classic (Gene Roddenberry type) star trek (also centred around moral, ethical, and social issues) just didn't work, so he had to make changes in order to sell his product. The humour was not there to make a "light-hearted, sometimes comedic approach to something he really loved". The humour was added as a selling point to overcome the comedian stereotype role than MacFarlane kept getting forced into. It was never the idea to make a comedy sci-fi series in the first place. I heard MacFarlane actually asked the copyright holders of star trek, many years ago, if he could make a new star trek series, and they actually thought it was a joke and so he was turned down. That's apparently what got him to create the Orville in the first place. Seriously, the way you criticise this makes me feel a bit like you didn't do much research at all on this.. Either that, or you're just hoping many people feel the same way, so you get more views on your videos.. In which case, thanks for the clickbait, but no thanks.. Either way.. I think the Orville became an amazing show despite the way it was forced to start and I for one am deeply grateful for them providing star trek fans around the world with an (in my opinion) insanely better star trek than the constant sh!tstorm of useless violence, endless CG BS and nonsensical stories JJ Abrams and such are crapping out (just consider for a moment a young, recently promoted Captain Kirk who is sulking for having to go on a "boring" deep space mission even though any devoted trekkie can explain to you space exploration is Kirk's number one passion)... Well anyway, delivering such a gem of a TV series in this climate, I think MacFarlane deserves a medal and The Orville deserves the highest honours.
Orville is the scifi we need. Star Trek is off the rails, and unclear if Strange New Worlds will save it. I hope Seth gets this great show renewed and it doesn't become a "Star Trek TOS" phenomenon.
