I firmly believe background music is unnecessary, distracting, and annoying and I strongly believe people want to hear you speak/get information and not hear generic background music.

Probably it's more misleading than bullshit - the UK definitely controls the strait, nothing can through without the UK's permission, but Spain and Morocco also control it. Each nation has its own right of veto, essentially. Maybe it's not mentioned because people often forget that the UK has a stake in the Mediterranean, whereas they're pretty solid on Spain and Morocco being there?

Great video! I do have to point out you made some mistakes and ambiguous statements in the "Libya's Importance" chapter. Started with Gaddafis ousting in 2021, which was actually in 2011. Government of National Accord was renamed to Government of National Unity over a year ago. There are many groups currently active in the Libyan crisis (maybe you tried to point that out with "clusters focused around.."?), which brings me to the most ambiguous part. "Energy is perhaps the most.." which you continue with "Libya alone holds 3% of the worlds and 39% of the Africa's reserves.". You seem to refer to energy, but later refer the percentage to "these" natural resources. Perhaps you could have generalized with "energy rich resources" or pointed out which resources and in which areas. The latter would build foundation and disperse some of the ambiguity. It would also create a "foreshadow" for the "Toyota war". Overall I enjoyed the video, just found it kinda hard to follow in the above mentioned parts. Keep up the good work!

Another small inaccuracy, Israel doesn't host any US military bases, and to my recollection never has. The US Navy does occasionally dock at Israeli ports and there are often joint exercises but they don't actually have a base or presence like they do in many other places.

Great production! I was looking forward to this a lot since I’m Libyan. It would be interesting to see how things develop now given that the Libyan civil war has been effectively over for two years. Most of the issues now have to do with election delays and rules, so it’s pretty much legal squabbling and internal politics. I think the main international spoilers are now Russia (for obvious reasons) and Turkey (to prevent Russia from taking over).

@@selleneus Thanks for your kind comment. It’s made more heartbreaking when considering that outside powers made us victims as a consequence of our democratic choices. Some absolute monarchies in the Gulf (including Islamist Turkey) would rather set Libya on fire than have it become a liberal democracy, as it had overwhelmingly voted for in 2012. Many people blame the US for the turmoil in Libya; that’s reductive and dangerous thinking. The sole culprits are the mid-level powers shown in this video, I blame them. And I put a pin on the West for not giving us .1% of the support they gave for Ukraine, for essentially very similar conditions like preserving national sovereignty and shared values - that we proved we believed in at the ballot box.

@@A.Severan Alan, I agree with you, but it’s also important to highlight that the west has deep responsibilities in the current situation. Western countries (France and UK in primis) started the military operation again Gheddafi, destroying part of the country infrastructures and ruling class in the process. They left a huge power vacuum and that was understandable that they were leaving Libya open for grab to the mid-regional powers like the UAE and Turkey. As you mentioned, something similar to what is going on in Ukraine could help address Libya’s instability. It’s crazy to me that the UN didn’t even tried to establish a real PKO in the country.

Another excellent video! I loved the visuals used in this iteration. The blurring at the start, the line animations used to animate the major shipping routes, and the clean borders on individual countries (plus with different colors to represent different alignments) were all fantastic! Aside from the couple errors that Luka Ratej pointed out in their comment about the “Libya’s Importance” section, the video’s nearly perfect!

Some high quality content, looking forward to binging your other videos!

The map usage of showing us routes, zoom ins and outs of land areas, and highlights is really MDMAzing and informative, thanks Kamome!

The animations, the rhythm, the voice tone, the globe movement, the dynamicity of it all, it really kept my eyes glued on the screen. Incredible work. What an amazing production, I really liked your vid and the topics you talk about are mostly accurate. One thing I would like to mention is in regards to the last point about using migrants. The 'massive cash inflows' are massively overstated. The given example of Turkey in 2015 is that of 6 Billion Dollars(Euros? can't recall which) of which 3 Billion was actually paid out iirc. Meanwhile the cost of that deal to Turkey has exceeded 50 Billion Dollars according to a pre-covid statement, I can't recall the exact year, might be 2018, but the number of migrants was also way lower at the time than it is now(Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Somalia are still burning after all and we all still remember Afghanistan). Not to discount the leverage these migrants give to the host nations, but the compensation for these deals are peanuts compared to the associated costs. So I think that point is overstated and overblown in media.

Khan! Thank you for your feedback. I see, that's a good point! Apart from the exact number, my point there is that those migration flows have been used as a diplomatic bargaining chip in the past and are therefore important in the context of EU foreign relations. But I agree with you, that kind of money is not nearly enoguh to face a full-blown migrant crisis.

Yh, the US is far more firmly entrenched in the Med Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, Greece and Turkey are all US NATO Allies. Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Half of Libya, Tunisia and Morocco are all pro US (government wise) which is why the US has unfettered, expedited fleet acces through the Suez for Example (I.e US Navy ships get to cut in line, as part of a treaty they have with Egypt) So Yh all things considered, the western position in the Med is solid. Russia could be a bit of a disruptor but it’s position is weak enough as to not really matter much. Really the US need to refocus on the Americas, it’s position on the continents is slipping and it needs to find a better way to maintain its security and develop more solid relations with the governments of the region irregardless of ideology.

Don't really see the comparison between the Mediterranean and the SCS. The SCS is both highly divided between multiple superpowers and China is making some very bold claims. The Mediterranean on the other hand only sits next to mostly Europe (Islands in the Mediterranean are in the EU, so a lot of legit claims there.) Thought countries like Greece and Turkey clash over Cyprus both are in NATO. Israel is also part of the "west". The other countries are in more or less a state of distress. Lybia is still a mess. Egypt is highly dependent on tourism and European food imports. Syria doesn't have a navy. Tunesia has a governmental crisis. Marokko and Algeria are going for close ties to the EU.
