Why the Massive Imperial Military Failed Against the Rebel Alliance

Ойын-сауық

The problem with fielding a massive peace time military force is that when a war actually starts, it might be completely geared for the wrong type of conflict. The Imperial military was massive and inflexible, it took quite a lot of time for it too adapt to growing rebel threat.

It's probably because their army wasn't necessarily bad, but pretty ineffective against an enemy that used hit and run tactics. You can see in the battle of Hoth that the Rebel Alliance wasn't nearly as effective in a full scale ground battle.

Yeah that’s one of the reasons the rebels were successful. They didn’t really *have* to win any battles. Just sneak around and blow stuff up and not get caught. Any cells that did get caught could just scatter before the Empire could manoeuvre forces into position to crush them.

It's not about the size of the military nor who is serving in the role of soldier/sailor. The Empire is a military dictatorship and something like 0.1% of their population would be more then reasonable. Coruscant alone has a population of 1 trillion and 0.1% of that is still 1 billion potential soldiers/sailors and with 25,000 ISD with a crew of nearly 37,000 each that is still only 925 million, meaning every other planet in the Empire only needs to contribute to smaller ships and the Army personnel. The problem is that they actively scrapped the GAR and CIS ships and equipment as seen in Jedi Fallen Order. They couldn't just pull out a couple thousand Venators or Munificents out of storage and load them up with tens of thousands of vulture and ARC fighters to deal with the threat, no at-te or hellfire droids for the army either. Hell, they didn't even bring back old designs that were proven, instead insisting on spending years creating new models and production techniques.

Your reference to the Sherman tank is a good analogy. Germany built larger and more powerful tanks and its Tiger tank was enormous, with heavy armor and weaponry---but it was unreliable and prone to breakdowns. The allies built midsize tanks but more of them and also relied on airpower and artillery support, which gave them the upper hand on the battlefield.

  • @leudast1215

With respect all ww2 tanks were unreliable. The US just produced enough spare parts and enough trucks and ships to get their parts to the front. Germany did not and relied too heavily on (bombed) railways. That reliance on railways also caused problems with tank movement since PzVI and PzV were too fat for most rail tunnels. Sherman was built to fit underground rail tunnels that is why it's so narrow and tall.

@@leudast1215 Unreliable by modern standards sure, but a Sherman tank was reliable by the standards of the time, easy to repair, and had plenty of spare parts. • @Engine33Truck

    @Engine33Truck

@@leudast1215 most German tanks were far more unreliable than their Allied counterparts. German tanks tended to be over engineered, which made supply and maintenance more complicated. The more moving parts you have, the higher probability of a breakdown you have. German tanks were also built with heavy use of slave labor, who had a tendency to actively sabotage the vehicles they were building. Yes, the Allies did have a better infrastructure, built more spare parts, and tried to incorporate as many common parts they could so that one part might be on multiple different vehicles, but also the Sherman was a much simpler design. It’s simplicity created easier maintenance and less parts to break

  • @Aeonearies

    @Aeonearies

    Жыл бұрын

Honestly, I’d debate the topic that Germany suffered from overengineering as that happened later in the war. Before 1944- the German’s engineering was actually quite good. Pz 2-3s were really great at what they were supposed to do; breakthrough maneuvers and infantry support, whist Pz4-6 (Tiger 1s) were used as anti-armor and fortification. What Germany suffered from was the lack of a proper logistical infrastructure, something that’s happening to Russia right now. The Germans could rarely get fuel to the front lines, more less basic supplies and necessities needed by the rest of the army. In fact, the majority of the German Wehrmacht relied on horses for transportation. Their tanks were adequate for their time, which I don’t see as the problem to why the German Army failed. It’s just the logistical mess of Germany, and more specifically Hitler and Company’s insistence of large projects instead of attempting to fix their logistics lines. The analogy to the Sherman was a good one, yes I’d admit. But pretty much every other nation was doing it too; Germany had Ausf variants for their Panzers, Russia kept making upgrades to the T34, and so did Britain with their myriad of tanks. Personally, I’d compare the Empire to Russian post 1980s, where they had all these super platforms embellished in propaganda to try to scare away competing nations, but when it comes time to actually fight, their performance is sluggish.

  • @MrGeorocks

One of the other reasons that the US built midsize tanks and didn't really field heavier tanks was the limitations imposed on them by the maximum lifting capacity of the cranes used to load the ships on the dockyards. I think it was around 40 tons, so everything built had to be limited by this. A lot of the Shermans you see have these hooks built on the upper structure and these were the lifting points for loading the tank. It was recognised as a potentially serious limit but replacing the cranes with bigger capacity ones to allow for larger tanks and other vehicles would have been such a problem that they just continued to use the midsized tanks since they were good enough already. There is a really good book called The Guns of War, which is the semi autobio of a Canadian FOO during the days after Overlord and he talks about the organisation of Allied arty support and how the Germans just couldn't understand that the rapidity and intensity of Allied bombardment wasn't down to an Allied secret automatic 25 pounder but to the organisation of the artillary so that a single FOO could call on troop, company and brigade level support.

The Republic was crumbling when the Empire replaced it. Even if Palpatine hadn't manipulated events to create the Clone Wars, there would have been an inevitable civil war between the outer rim and the core. When the Empire rose to replace the Republic its primary goal was to restore order, and the easiest way to do that was through intimidation and centralization of power. The very heart of the Tarkin Doctrine was to cow rebellious worlds into submission which is why the Empire needed lots of large, intimidating Star Destroyers to project their power. As you correctly pointed out, it wasn't a sustainable model and it spread their forces too thin, so when the Rebels began to coordinate their efforts with hit-and-runs strikes the Empire couldn't respond quickly or effectively.

Which is factually incorrect. It was meant as a do-all Star Destroyer and carried more Starfighters than nearly all other ships in the galaxy. At the time, at least. Plus, the Empire still had other cheaper carriers to call from. Venator isn`t a god ship, and the Empire could afford the crew cost and logistics of the SD. It DID control a whole galaxy, after all. Victory Star Destroyer, which are more numerous than ISDs, should have been used to hunt down Rebels. While supported with smaller craft. The Empire had 100s of millions of other smaller military ships to call on. They actually were beating the Rebellion as well! A fact that this channel leaves out. The Rebellion was roughly 7%, not 1% like he had said, of the Empire`s military. They had the tools to deal the rebellion. In Legends, the Imperial Civil War is how they lost the Galactic Civil War. The Rebellion just snowballed from there. And I`m tired of people shitting on ISDs. The ISDs were actually great ship, not much could stand against a Victory 2. Let along an ISD2. If supported, they are pretty much unbeatable. As Thrawn has shown us. They were even being used 140 years later, in legends. Even the New Republic kept building them. The Venator was redundant, and you have Ton-Falks that can do the same thing, at a cheap price. In theory, an ISD could even carry more starfighters than the smaller Venator. Not like there weren`t any modded ones out there, because there were. The young Empire was still building up its military and never reached its potential. It just was focused on modernizing its capitals ships first. Even though it produced more of literally EVERYTHING ELSE. Like lancers and Vindicators/Enforcers. The 25,000 SDs/ISDs, also don`t really add up. For one, it is not clear if it counts the Vics, BCs, or Gladiators. it also seems extremely low for a Galactic wide Empire. Even if it had millions of other ships to use. Can build two Death Stars, but only 25,000 ISDs? And the Empire has quadrillions of citizens. Outnumbering the Imperium of Man. Several times over. A fleet of 1 billion ISDs would require a total crew of about 37 trillion beings, for comparison. Leaving out the other crafts they should also have in the billions. If they don`t already...

The Old Republic had done the same with the Venators, which were much less powerful as battleships than the Imperial class, but which served as launch points for fighter squadrons without having to remain stationary. The carrier could jump away to a different location because their fighters could also jump to rendezvous with them. A highly-mobile force could evade larger groups of heavier capital ships.

Another item that should be noted is that although the main force of the rebel's military forces came from the armed forces of sympathetic worlds, and a number of large-scale rebel groups, there were still individual rebel cells scattered throughout the galaxy. The empire did not have sufficient forces to tackle both groups. The Empire dedicated the bulk of its military to hunting down the main rebel forces. It also had to dedicate a significant portion to police and security duties to protect its installations and logistics centers. One of the reasons for this is when the empire took over a planet, it supplanted local law enforcement which only contributed to the problem. The ISB shares a good deal of the blame in the creation of the rebellion.

Little question: Should the two large Star Wars conflicts be renamed? The Clone Wars and Galactic Civil War are the two most influentail conflicts in the Star Wars history we have seen on screen and the names never quite sounded right to me. First the Galactic Civil War was not something named in universe but called that by fans and EU writers. I found this definition for it "a politically organized, large-scale, sustained, physically violent conflict that occurs within a country principally among large/numerically important groups of its inhabitants or citizens over the monopoly of physical force within the country". Now you could argue that this applies to the Rebellion conflict with the Empire, but the Rebellion is clearly not a large scale effort and does not involve more than a statistically insignificant part of the population. Also the conflict is about more than control over the country or political power, it is about an ideological fight to overthrow a system to replace it with one based on other political aspirations. I think this definition of revolution is better adapted to the Rebellion's war "an overthrow or repudiation and the thorough replacement of an established government or political system by the people governed". The Galactic Civil War should, at least I think be named the Galactic Revolution, plus it fits with the theme of Americans against Imperialist Brits. I have seen it be referred as such but it clearly is not the consensus and I think there is room for improvement in our discourse if we name things accurately Now the Clone Wars is the other great conflict and apart from being made canon by Luke in ANH, why is it called the "clone war"? Why are clones, the important or impactful element that burned itself into the collective galactic memory. Why not droids? There were billions of them and they tried to destroy the core worlds, the winners that get to call the war. The Droid war would make more sense than the Clone wars considering there were only 6 million clones in all and they were "the Good guys" for the later Imperial Historians. But more importantly when you refer yourself to the previous definition I gave for Civil war it fits better. The Confederacy is a politically organized, large scale sustained, physically violent conflict that decided the control over the monopoly of physical force in a politie (the Monopoly of violence of Max Weber being the appetance of a sovereign State). Once again a parallel in American hsitory would be the US civil war. With an organized faction that presents as an independant State trying to secede from an original state, in order to be able to use its own ressources and instaure its own authoritarian exploitative political regime on populations farther away from the core of the country, for philosophical as well as economical interests. The Clone wars name fits this conflict far less than Galactic Civil War in my opinion. I know these names are seered into canon at this point and it's too late to do anything about it but I would love your opinion on the nomenclature given to historical events in Star Wars.

Semi hot-take; the M4 Sherman tank was one of the best designs in the war, and for the US it really was the best. There is this popular misunderstanding that the speed of production and low production cost means that it was "weak" compared to tanks like the Panther, Tiger, and T-34. M4 crews had a far better survivability rating than their counterparts in Panthers, Tigers, and T-34s. The 75mm gun was able to defeat the vast majority of targets tank commanders wanted destroyed. It may not have looked very sexy compared to other tanks, but it had the best chance of being able to reach the warzone, drive to the battlefield without breakages, destroy what it needed to destroy, and ensure the crew survived contact with the enemy. And on top of that, was cheaper and faster to produce. A star destroyer could be packed full of AT-ATs, but if they couldn't reach the battlezone, they weren't of much use.

6:05 Another serious flaw of the TIE fighter as discussed in the Xwing book series; training is well and good, but there is no substitute for real combat experience. The TIE's relative lack of shields and durability translated into a turnover rate that, while economically sound, made it much more difficult to find experienced, veteran pilots.

I'd say it's reductive to claim that the Sherman was the best tank only because the US could produce it in such high numbers. While having that economy of scale is definitely a contributing factor, the Sherman tank also excelled in soft factors such as reliability, crew survivability, ease of transport, versatility, etc.

As you showed in another video, having TIE fighters deployed immediately upon jumping to any location would have dramatically shortened the advantage-of-surprise time period that the Rebellion's hit-and-run tactics generally provided. Instead of having free rein for destruction until the TIEs were scrambled, Rebel fighters would have to fight through a wave of TIEs before being able to hit their main targets. This move, even with the Empire's overspending on the wrong craft, would have allowed the Empire to overcome the Rebellion.

The 22 was only more agile than the 23 which outperformed the raptor in every other metric and i might add was nearly three years further along in development. As for the IFV, Lockheed was a relatively close second but they were outperformed by a startup offered at a provable 60% cost per unit by comparison. A better machine at 40% less is an easy sell in the senate appropriations committee. So Lockheed sued relying on the competition not being able to eat the expenses and ideally end up being purchased. I think most of these discussions focus on the mismatch of military platforms to the enemy's strategy. That's valid. But one of the biggest cornerstones of an effective Military Strategy is at the Political Level. An effective leader should: 1 ) Unite people under common ideals and a vision which anyone would agree with and fight for. Unite people with a vision rooted in human nature so noble, so attractive that it not only attracts the uncommitted and magnifies the spirit and strength of its adherents, but also undermines the dedication and determination of any competitors or adversaries. The vision must permits leaders, and other authorities, to inspire their followers and members to enthusiastically take action toward confronting and conquering all obstacles that stand in the way. This is what the Rebels did effectively. 2) Retain moral authority at all times so that your enemies may not find fault with your actions and so that you gain dedicated allies. The Rebels retained more moral authority than the Empire. 3) Form your nation into a meritocracy at all levels - Political, Military and Economic so the best people rise to their most appropriate level of responsibility. The Empire was more prone to Nepotism (at least in the books).

I think the biggest problem the Imperial Forces faced was the sheer immense size and scope of the galaxy itself. Nobody can possible build a large enough military to gain complete control of the whole galaxy. The rule of the Old Republic was based on voluntary associationism, not forced coercion like the Empire. Because of this, the Empire lost a lot of popular support, due in no small part to the Empire’s strong arm tactics. This was the REAL cause of the Empire’s collapse.

I think this is correct, but it also falls on the military leaders ineffective decision making and strategy use to either counter hit and run tactics or turn the tactics against the Rebel Alliance. The only admiral I know of who attempted to do this was Grand Admiral Thrawn. Admiral Thrawn wanted to upgrade the basic Tie Fighter to Tie Defenders that had deflector shields and a hyper drive. This addresses the weaknesses of the basic Tie Fighter. Admiral Thrawn was also following the Rebel's hit and run attacks in order to find Rebel bases. This turns the Rebel's strategy of hit and run attacks into a disadvantage since Thrawn could track them given enough time and the loss of a few Imperial Star Destroyers, which also turned the size of the Imperial Navy into an advantage. I think this is why in current Canon, Thrawn was dragged out of the picture since it was improbable of Thrawn losing in a traditional military conflict without other intervention, such as the Force.

The Republic controlled the galaxy by giving the systems power to influence the government via the Senate. But Palpatine was a power hungery control freak so he wouldn't give anyone power and wanted to control everything. So he had to control the galaxy some other way and the Clone Wars allowed him more easily to use what he wanted in the first place; fear and military forces. But since the galaxy was so big and the military wasn't enough, only teror remained which Tarkin recognized. Basically the Empire never abandoned the Tarkin doctrine because its ideas filled very well into Palpatine's Sith ideology and its practices. Palpatine couldn't rule in any other way than terror so the Empire couldn't change without getting rid of Palpatine, his closest cohorts and their ideology.

Want to call at the M4 Sherman comment. The M4, until the 1980's was considered one of the best tanks from WW2, not because of the ease of production but because the A2s and later had effective frontal armor that rivaled what the German's put down, but had competitive weapons, high crew survivability, a large amount of interior space, with few barriers between crew members (Firefly variant being the sole exception) good range and fuel economy. In the '80s the Sherman got a bad rap from a mechanic who claims that they were called "Zippos" in WW2 because they caught fire easily. (Evidence shows they caught fire about the same as other tanks, the big difference being the crews were more likely to survive the fires than other tank's crews.) The Sherman had its problem, the profile was a bit high, however it's design made it easy to pack on ships, which is something the US needed with all of its large equipment due to the fact that it was fighting wars on the other side of massive oceans.

Basically the rebels had a two-pronged strategy: asymmetric warfare to goad the Empire into more overt repression, and diplomacy to capitalize on that repression and get more systems to defect. "The harder you squeeze, Tarkin," etc. War is politics by other means, and the rebels never lost sight of that. I'd watch a show that was just about Mon Mothma.

So personally, I think an investment in smaller multi-role cruisers such as the Vindicator Class Heavy Cruiser, and longe-range fighters such as the Tie Defender, would have greatly enhanced the Imperial Military’s capabilities to combat the Rebellion when it was still more of an insurgency than an actual organized combat force. Also the 1/3-2/3 rule is good for most militaries: 1/3 being the active component forces and 2/3 being the reserve component. Having a federally established and permanently maintained reserve force cuts cost both in terms of funding the full time military and also the cost of ramping up for a full on conflict, you have a partially trained, semi-professional force already established

When you think about it, the Empire was doimed to fail onve the Tarkin Doctrine became the centre piece of the Imperial military. Like, why build so many star destroyers(or ISD) a battle-line ship designed for anti battle-line warfare when there wasn't any other faction in the known galaxy to face them? Like the ISD was so heavily armed an armoured that in 98% of the time would be complete over kill. Honestly i think the Empire should have kept the Republic Venator because for a cruiser it was well armed an armoured plus it could carry a decent number of fighters an transports as well as carry roughly 2,000 passengers but have a crew of 7,400. Yeah its a bit crew heavy but you could always replace some of the crew with droids. Anyway the Venator 1 and 2 make for a solid pick for system defence/patrols as long as its escorted by a small fleet of attack cruisers. As for escort ship, to be honest the CIS Recusant light destroyer is a good pick, the only thing I'd change is add more armor near the rear of the ship between the engines and the rest of the ship. I pick this ship because it only needs a crew of 300 to operate but it has enough space to carry 40,000 beactivated battle droids, obviously its not gonna carry 40,000 stormtroopers but it could make enough for perhaps 5,000 that would be a VERY handy ship to have. Just send 3 of these to rapidly respond to a crisis and blow foe away or deploy 10 to 15 thousand stormtroopers, it would be WAY more flexible than to build a ISD hell you could get 3 for the price of 1.

Develop corp systems where you could have like 4-5 ships per corp. Could've improved response times and could keep up with the rebel groups. Star destroyers could've been used in limited circumstances and as huge support vessels (supply, medical, intelligence, bombardment etc) a corp system wouldve allowed battle groups to react on their own as well and be more independent instead of relying on high command and stuff like the ISB on what to do next.

12:23 okay bruh its the M4 Sherman Tank. The M3 Lee was the predecessor/stopgap before the later, more successful Sherman.

I have to disagree on one point. The Empire's forces aren't intended to keep the peace. They are only intended to protect the Empires interests. If a region/planet were to erupt into a civil war, the Empire wouldn't do anything so long as their interests aren't at risk.

The Tarkin doctrine sounds good in theory: scare any potential threats into submission. But if it fails to prevent fighting, it’s basically useless. Not only was the doctrine strategically and tactically unsuitable for the type of warfare employed by the rebels, but the fear factor had become a liability. Presenting itself with an evil aesthetic that was quite literally derived from fascism wasn’t exactly the best PR move for the empire, giving more merit to the rebel cause and thus creating more rebels.

You forgot about the MRAP. It's one of the most advanced in the world right now. Though, I suppose it isn't really an IFV. The Bradley, though, is still one of the most advanced and powerful IFVs out there. I get the feeling you mistake an IFV for a kind of tank.

Are you former military? Your knowledge and use of verbiage comes off as someone with prior military experience. In any case, great video!

I don’t think pure battleship was the doctrine for Imperial Star Destroyers. I think intimidation was a main function of them. Utility was secondary. My main reasoning for this was the Venator class was in many ways superior. Better mixture of armaments and a vastly larger fighter complement.
