Yes, in one of the comics a young Anakin asks Obi-Wan about different type of weapons and why Jedi prefer the lightsaber.

The lightwhip seems to be an offensive weapon, not a lightweapon of a Jedi. Maybe it's just me?

Lumyia-a Sith Lady from Legends-used a lightwhip that she customized to contain additional energy strands, which could be altered in length and power settings. This was how Lumyia was able to go toe-to-toe with Luke Skywalker before and even after becoming Grand Master

Imagine force lightning with the whip

I am a big believer in it is wielder not the weapon that really manner, that said I will say using a light-whip is a bad idea altogether. The weakness and dangers of the weapon far out way its streaghts, now it is not to say that Jedi or Sith shouldn’t study the weapon for the best way to defend against it and defeat the user is to know how it works. Though I do love they are bring it back for interesting to see in action and move the story.

It has the same drawbacks than using a flail, it's dangerous to the owner, dangerous for allies, and contextual.

I think it could be useful as a sudden one attempt weapon. You walk up to an opponent, and use it with intent to kill quickly, and not draw out the fight. Other than that, I don't really see it as being practical.

The Hundred Year Darkness, which led to the Sith, the Hyperspace War which saw the first war between the Republic/Jedi and Sith, the Sith War led by fallen Jedi turned Sith., and the new Sith wars of the Fourth Schism, are still very much events that happened in canon. It’s just their details are scant and there seems to be contradictions between reference sites as to when they occurred. But not too long back, they still happened when the took place in the Legends EU continuity. 100/yr Darness. = 7,000 bby Is the Second Schism which is Lucas, so that’s canon. Hyperspace War = 5,000 bby The Sith War. = 4,000 bby Are both mentioned and/or happened in the canon Qel-Droma Epics, which is a streamlined account of the old ‘Tales of the Jedi’ comics of the Legends continuity. With the Hyperspace war being referenced in the early source books and the ancient Sith War being referenced back to the early days of the franchise. With the 4th Schism era taking place between 2,000 and 1,000 bby, which saw the near demise of the Jedi and the Republic by the Sith and their empire before it was ended by Darth Bane being another Lucas thing and so is still canon. In Legends, this led to the Ruusan Reformation and into the Golden Age of the Republic, also known as the High Republic in canon. Where they seem to be having a problem with in the new canon is deciding the dates. Some sources give the same dates as with Legends. Others just moved up the Hundred Year Darkness to 5,000 bby. And other sources seem to conflate and contradict the wars, events and dates at the same time.

Kit Fisto used a lightwhip. Seems like a skilled user could use it to great effect being able to deflect at range, block attacks against allies, trip up opponents and keep distance between the user and their enemy. Very flexible if hard to master, and it can't get tangled up in an opponent's lightsaber: the user can just switch it on an off to reset it!

Lumiya is the one who introduced the lightwhip and in her hands is a deadly weapon. She is a strong female character done right and a pride for the real canon.

Why do Jedi wield such weapon? Well ... the true answer sustain from two parts: 1) Whips seems cool ... 2) Nobody in charge cares about continuity, canon or lore in general ... And in the end that is all that matters. So if one day they decide that a gun that uses lightsabers as ammo would be cool ... oh wait. It's been in Canon for some time now

I know we are talking about space wizards, but still concept of weapon like this is just stupid for me. There is so much what can go wrong for you while using it and almost nothing to gain except some reach and surprise at start of battle.

I feel like you would have more of an advantage if you could swap between whip & saber in the same hilt. That would be cool to see.

Lightsabers are dangerous enough…to their welders. Historically that was one of the main reasons why non-Force Sensitives didn’t use them. The more complicated the lightsaber becomes the more dangerous it becomes to the wielder unless said wielder is abnormally skilled. Lumiya was, if memory serves, exceptionally agile even before she became a cyborg.

A lightwhip would be a great surprise secondary weapon. Master a lightsaber and lightwhip. Engage your opponent with a traditional lightsaber and then use your other hand with surprise lightwhip to finish them.

Imagine a wielder of this weapon mastering telekinesis so they not only have great control of the weapon, but be able to move the blade with the force to strike their targets at different angles.

Lightwhip is actually just a misunderstood lightsaber. If a Jedi has a problem with the Force flowing in his body, his lightsaber won't hold its shape and it will become a whip instead. It can be easily transformed back into a lightsaber if the Force networks within the body get fixed.

Eh, Disney has 0 respect for star wars, the existing lore or characters. I have no real problem with the whip being used as a weapon, but the writers of all these shows sre more interested in making star wars their own, impriting themself and their ideas into the medium rather then using what already exists. It is not star wars, its disney wearing the eviscerated skin suit of star wars and walking around in it like a warhammer flayed one.
